HTC One XL Reviews - AT&T, Rogers HTC One X, Telstra One XL

The HTC One X for AT&T was under a review embargo until now. I've posted my full review of the device for everyone to check out. In addition, I've listed out some other reviews. Enjoy!
My review - BriefMobile
Engadget
AndroidCentral
AndroidPolice
The Verge - updated with section on One XL (AT&T)
Droid-Life
Android And Me
MobileTechReview
MobileSyrup (Rogers)

The Verge's One X Review has also been updated.

The only hardware difference between the rogers and the at&t one x's is the branding at the top of the screen. lol

thanks mate! been waiting for the engadget review of the ATT one for a while.

But do we get the 25gb with Dropbox? I didn't see it on any bloat ware list and nobody mentioned it.....

Not that I know of. It isn't pre-installed on the AT&T version.

To the OP.
Is the bloatware removable? I really truly don't want to have to root to free up whatever space that junk takes up.

Sigh. Time to ***** up a storm on the ATT website. This company is the worst sometimes. Demands their logo be on the phone, forces crapware onto our phones, etc. Need to see how much space this crap takes up.
Thanks for the reply.

Easily removed once it has been rooted.
Glad the battery life is looking good in these reviews, it's certainly making it a lot more tempting.

If you are upset at paying $199.00 for a subsidized device, feel free to purchase an LTE model from a Canadian telco or a Tegra 3 device from overseas. You have options as a consumer.
I feel like people still don't understand the concept of subsidized.

The embargo for the AT&T reviews was lifted at 6pm EST. Everything I've read so far is simply outstanding. Battery life appears to be excellent with LTE. Wow.

alrighty Mr. Penn...enough of the reviews and start cooking!!!!LOL

Wow! So impressed with the snapdragon S4 processor, better battery life and performs better than the tegra 3. Wow!

One of the review said the ring around the camera on the AT&T version is a bit thicker than the international one. Good new to those who worry about scratching the camera lens!

hi kenn,
would you recommend getting this phone over the i717 galaxy note?

Should I get it?

Found a Captivate on Craigslist for $150. I have an iPhone 3G right now, before that, a Blackberry Bold 9000. Would it be prudent of me to grab this device and try it out for a while before deciding what new Android device to get? Could I have enough fun and time with it before transferring? Thanks for your help!
If it works and doesnt have a cracked screen, it sound like a good deal. Pm me a link to the c list page and i'll give you a better opinion
He lowered the price to $150. Seems like he wants to get rid of it. I could then sell my iPhone 3G to recoup some money back, so I might just go ahead and do it.

No, just offering to look at it for a second opinion. Maybe he missed something in the pics that could answer some questions, like why is someone selling a phone worth about double that for that price. I'm thinking its either bricked or broken.

Almost all modern custom roms take care of that pretty well
Sent from my GT-I9000 using Tapatalk
If you go the custom ROM route, you'll have an excellent smartphone.
Other than GPS, of course.
I just recently moved to ATT from TMobile where I had the Vibrant. They are currently doing refurb Captivates for $10 (or at least were 2 weeks ago) - if you will sign for 2 years.
I have a captivate, and I've had a 3G before and the captivate is better in my opinion. Its has way more customization plus a noticeable speed increase. And if you jailbroke your 3G there's a computer app called one click that makes it easy to jailbreak or "root" your captivate.

Jumping Ship - Upgrade to Galaxy II

Goodbye Captivate, hello Galaxy II.
Finally had it with the quirks on the Cappy over the last year: the screwy back/home button, the flakey GPS and the real lack support with new ROMs.
Picked up my GSII and bit the bullet on a new 2 year AT&T contract. I have a grandfathered unlimited data plan (30$/Mo) and they absolutely hate me, I do a minimum 10GB/mo and usually closer to 20. I ignore the threats and emails. With the 4G/H+ that will only get worse. Initial speed tests hit 5-6Mbps, almost double what I used to get.
Initial observations;
- Lightweight (plus?)
- Oddly flimsy back battery panel
- Power connector on the bottom, finally.
- Screen is bigger and gorgeous
- Gorila glass doesn't rainbow or smudge as much but does attract lint.
- It's FAST. Hitting the Gallery is instantly populated, even with a 16GB external that's packed with HD photos, movies and music. Can't stress this enough, this thing is SNAPPY.
- Badly Bloated. While this is to be expected, AT&T really went overboard. Nothing a root wont fix.
- Much better battery life. It's almost double what my highly tweaked Cappy would get and this SGS2 is still stock.
- GPS is INSTALOCK. No, really. Tested this all over Los Angeles and it's been flawless.
- Faster, more responsive browsing. I haven't confirmed this yet, but it seems to be using different DNS servers to resolve names? Hitting a URL would normally involve typing it in and waiting for the lookup to occur, it's practically instant now on any URL. Maybe they're pre-cached? Again, haven't looked into this.
- Overpriced. Even on "sale" it cost me $70 and that included trading in my Cappy, plus I had to renew for 2 more years.
Bottom line is that Samsung seems to have addressed many of the glitches that plagued the Captivate. Running GB (UCKH7) stock is an obvious factor; It comes with 2.3.4, and 2.6.35.7 kernal.
All of those things help but, overall, the hardware is a considerable leap. It's an impressive phone and I recommend it to anyone considering an upgrade.

No, that's the iPhone
Has anyone seen John Connor?
I totally agree with Captain Zero's observations. A friend of mine picked up the AT&T GSII, and after playing with it the three of us with Captivates are super jealous. The phone is phenomenally fast. I'm running Teamhacksung's ICS and another is on CM7 with a mild OC, but nothing we do compares to the smoothness of the GSII. Even the Skyrocket has the slightest stutter from time to time when I was playing with it at the AT&T store.
Lol the skyrocket was the phone that reportedly exploded in someones pocket. Not the OG. I think.

I'm sold!!
I just upgraded to SGS II on friday and i absolutely love it. Yes the screen is bigger & brighter. The thing runs like it's on red bull concentrate! And that's before i root and overclock it...
So here's a rundown on my first impression. My cappy never got over 16mb down on my wifi connection - the first run of my speedtest.net app get me 34mb down - 1 point for sgs 2.
Second, i was able to download and install all my apps from the app store one by one FASTER than my cappy did it with titanium backup, that alone almost made me cuss around my children!
Third, browsing is stupid fast - it almost never hiccups on pages.
Fourth, 4g is awesome and i've never been able to get 1.5mb upload with ANY modem on captivate, let alone 6mb down and not even on 4g.
5th, it's lighter and the batter lasts about 40% longer than my cappy.
The camera has a FLASH! You can even download an app to use the flash as a flashlight.
Well done Samsung! Now lets see what i can screw up by rooting this baby
P.S. I did not upgrade to the skyrocket because it does not have Gorilla glass AND even though the processor is clocked faster, it does not perform faster in tests... I'll stick with this one for now.

Don't know where he went, but Radio Shack had the phone last week for $49 with new activation or upgrade. I think that ended 11/30.
I'd also like to thank the OP for the info. It's helpful and relevant to us Cappy owners that are thinking about jumping to the SGS2. Never could understand why some people feel the need to be douchey on the internet.

At&t hox or international hox?

Im buying one of these bad boys or girls. The At&t one off contract or the international one. I played with the hox at my local at&t store and it was buttery smooth. Didnt wow me a whole lot but nowadays the next android device is only a tad better than the next...etc. My main concern is performance and the 32gb space that the international one has. Im worried with the at&t 16gb will run out fast on me. This from my 16gb microsd card days. So which one should I get guys?
Comes down to what is more important to you...LTE or storage space. If it's LTE, get the AT&T version...if it's storage, get the international version.
Personally, warranty is important. If you can get an international with warranty and not in a LTE area, go for it.
I am in Dallas so I will get the AT&T one for warranty comfort and LTE speeds
50mb down here

Lol, it should be a no brainer then. In what mostly do you use your space on?
I used to use most of my space on music, but not anymore thanks to google play.
I would take the quad core version. It should be much smoother and faster everywhere. No LTE also means better battery life.
This question has been asked and answered a million times on here... You should take a look.
But here you go.
AT&T HOX= LTE and longer battery life
International HOX= 32gb and if you're an avid phone gamer tegrazone may interest you.
And warranty stuff comes into play too.
Everything else comes to what your decision is.
And let me add the S4 has a faster CPU but inferior GPU. The difference is so minute though you probably won't notice.
Also keep in mind you get 25GB of free Dropbox space. I know it's not a direct replacement for internal storage, but it's something to keep in mind if 16GB seems a little too small.

Thanks! I needed a good laugh tonight! For the first time, I am glad AT&T is getting the dumbed down dual core version.
I dont care much for lte atm. And I'm tempted to get the int. hox but all those issues I've read about it really have me on hold. Nothing like bringing your device back to an at&t store compared with shipping it back to wherever you purchased your international version for a replacement etc. I just wish the int. hox didnt have all those issues like the screen especially

You think. But let me tell you the htc one xl is no where near to being released in internationally. It was not enough announced here in asia. The eventual release is being pushed back indefinitely until 28nm chip shortage ease up. In fact all snapdragon s4 chips supporting lte are going to US and Canada as the priority. A small amount of 28 nm production goes towards the msm8260 non lte s4 chip in the one s which is only released for t- mobile and a couple of european countries so far. We get the hardest kick in the ball.

Wrong wrong wrong wrong wrong.
Please don't give out misinformation
The S4 has the higher DMIP values, which means stronger processing power in general purposes. IF you like games, get the T3 for the Tegrazone, if graphics are important. If you demand your phone to work as advertised, with little or no lag, get the S4.

I'm convinced this is a typo.
The Australian site is the only one to list 32GB. The Hong Kong, US and Canadian sites all list 16GB for the LTE model.
And as of yet, no Australian carrier has even announced they'll be carrying the One XL.

Reduced-core but highly-improved core, I wouldn't say dumbed down whatsoever.

Yeah, I know. Did I not come across with enough sarcasm?
I believe HTC dropped the ball here by giving north americans the 16gb version. They could've been smarter, dare I say apple smart, and offered both versions here 16gb and the 32gb version.
Now I just noticed from the latest leaked galaxy s3 pics that it has a big led notification light. Now I'm interested in hearing what they gotta say in a couple of days.

How Do YOU Like This Device?? [I am looking to purchase]

Hello guys,
I am just wondering, how do you guys like this device. I am interested in buying the device (at full price as my T-Mobile contract is not ready for renewal) and was wondering if there are any common complaints / issues to look out for. Thanks so much for helping.
PS: If you have time:
1) How is battery life? (IE, can it last one day heavy usage)?
2) Will this work with full HSDPA on T-Mo USA?
3) Is there a way to toggle the torch to use as a flashlight?
4) Where exaclty would be the best place to buy this phone without contract in USA? OR Will this work with a standard T-Mo SIM card?
5) Would anyone recommend me wait for any other device that is soon to come out or is already out instead of this device?
If anyone could answer just one of the above, I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you!

1. No. Most I get out of heavy use is about 6 or 7 hours.
2. Yes.
3. Yes.
4. I would look on craigslist or Amazon.
5. I would HIGHLY recommend this device. Unless you're ok with waiting for the SGiii, this is the best you can get for T-Mobile right now.
Sent from my HTC VLE_U using XDA
I use this phone all day streaming, email, xda, general surfing, games and still end up with around 30% battery, pretty good in my book. Physical design, sense and the overall experience is excellent. There are some lemons out there but overall quality is high.
The SGiii offers a few more features in the department of removable storage but overall for the US release these phones are almost on par. (Same dual core CPU)
The most impressive feature is the One S camera. There isn't a phone out there in the world that can touch it, say the One X. I travel so a nice camera is a must.
I would have paid full for price for this phone but I had a ToS change to my contract that helped me convince T-Mobile that they owed me, on top of the issues I had with my G2x.
My wife jumped the apple bandwagon to get one of these phones and she loves it.

Thanks so much, guys. The only issue I heard a reviewer say was that the screen can, at times, almost look pixelated or distorted. Anyone even notice this or is this issue just an extreme nit-pick? Also, is there any noticeable lines that run across the screen in low lighting setting like the GSii?
EDIT:
One small thing, if anyone bought their phone from website and would like to share the site, please post a link below or PM me. I want to make sure I get the real model and not a banned or stolen model number. Thanks!
AND:
How does this device work without an SD-Card? Do games that require downloading separate files to run (IE The Sims && Xplane) still work?
i just bought the phone from tmobile customer service and i should get it tomorrow. cant wait to play with it. ive pretty much owned every higher end android phone for tmobile and i just sold my sensation 4g for this phone. i really want to play with the s4 lol.

Pros:
Camera
Excellent battery life
Speed
Design
About negative sides some people mention:
Screen issues - nit-pick
SDCARD - no problems, phone DOES have a card but it is not removable. Admittably, would have been better to have 32gig version, but this one is enough for almost everything except maybe your video collection.
All in all never regretted it, best phone atm.

my screen has never looked distorted--gorgeous-
go to a store and play with it several times--i got mine at a tmo store
it takes a micro sim, regular ones won't work w/o cutting--not up on that. but you are going to get one anyway
My screen is amazing too, i had a gripe with amoled screens, like on my dads galaxy s, that it just looks weird compared to led screens, but the One S screen looks almost undistinguishable to leds, and luckily im not a pentile hater, so I cant really see the pentile pixelation
remember
HTC ONE S:
Very aggressive CPU here- Krait "Cortex A15" (220 linpack) but so ****ed GPU (Adreno 225)
(why ?
Go to youtube desktop and play 1080P HD video.....oh sorry you CAN'T play)
Galaxy Nexus
I don't feel any power., I feel optimization.
(Omap is sucks, GPU is PowerVR SGX540- this is too old crap, even if overclocked.
youtube test with 1080p HD video is FAILED also)
so only one phone is rocking, or Im sorry only one chipset is good-
it is "EXYNOS"
Regards.
I have gotten 12Hr and 30 Mins of usage (Heavy listening to music updating facebook ect. Pics, vids,) With 40% remaining. And yes to everything else you asked.

One s is the way to go on T-Mobile bro. unless you wanna wait for the galaxy s 3.
For me, I will never get a T-Mobile branded galaxy device because it will not be identical to all other galaxy s3.
So what does that mean? it means the T-Mobile s3 development will not be as good. On the other hand, every one s is the same and development will flourish like the sensation.
And to me Samsung is really getting wack, the s3 whole nature idea and Svoice, s this and s that. sound similar to ithis and ithat
And finnaly. you can't compare sense ui to touch wiz. sense is King of android ui overlays.

Remembered you too--
Yes, it is much better and development is growing now with LeeDroid on board. I thought I wanted a larger screen. But, now I know that would have been a mistake for me anyways. The 10gb free memory after OS and apps may be an issue for some. Not me. Otherwise, excellent phone. NO touchscreen issues, and you will know what I mean--
Ken
So there is ONLY 10 GB free (for **** like music/vids/pics) after the OS and cache partitions?!? That is REALLY cutting it for me, I thought there would be 16GB free. Uhh ohh...
And one more thing, my bad:
Will there be a difference of the global version of this device or the T-Mo specific version and what is that difference? Thanks!
Yea, the memory is only negative, but works for most people. I have a 1.3gb video, pics and a nandroid etc with 4gb left
don't know about any global version atm
Never mind, I was just getting confused between T-Mobile branded version and the stock version. They seem to be exactly the same.

What do you guys think of the MI-TWO? for only $313 dollars OFF contract, it's amazing, and 2gb ram+Qualcomm Snapdragon Pro Quad-core, its a bargain. what do you guys think?
I would like to order, but how? It is only available in china as I know.

I dunno, I think it's releasing in October, and I will sent someone to China to get it for me! Lucky me.

It looks really good. I have held off on getting a new phone since my contract expired as there is nothing out there that does everything I want, but this might just be the phone for me.
Quad-Core, large screen (+ high resolution), Add-on Micro SD-Card slot, looks like removable battery as well, so can upgrade to the 3000mAh one for longer life.
There has to be a catch somewhere ...
Looks freaking insane, but I dont like MIUI that much :/

Not only removable but from the article I read this morning the 3000mAh is going to cost you a whole 2mm in thickness.
This phone looks amazing, can't wait to see if it's obtainable in the US and if it gets any momentum going. I'd expect a lot of prepaid folks to give this a hard look for what looks to be the best bang for your buck ever.

It would be veeeeeeeeeeeeeeeery nice!
Hate to say it but this phone will not get a big following anywhere outside of china for many reasons. Some being that these types of china knock offs tend not to have the hardware that is advertised, no real warranty outside of china, and normally don't run official android builds, nor have access to the market due to Google and china issues.
Might not be bad if they could get their act together but I don't see iit happening

I want but don't want to think about how much extra I will be paying to import it. It is really nice though and if I wanted to I could just use an alternate launcher. They should open up a shop in the states xD.

One look at the phone and UI and you will see why that won't happen. They keep it in china due to the lack of copyright laws.

Well china does have copyright laws. It's either just not enforced at all or it favors companies in the country.
Also as a reply to your previous post, this company is supported by Qualcomm directly (or at least so I read on Engadget). And since it is running MIUI, it also has full access to the Play Store and will get updates since it just updates whenever MIUI gets updated. Warranty probably won't work but I tend to try to not damage my products and keep them safe. If there are manufacturing issues, well that's my fault for not researching the product more before I bought it.

Just because it has MIUI (which is not something I would brag about lol) doesn't mean it will have the market. If it looks good to you then by all means give it a shot. Good luck just don't expect it to find a home here.

*sigh, you definitely haven't used MIUI, or any product by Xiaomi. They are TRUSTED. Go ask those who uses the Mi-One, they are the most satisfied bunch of all smartphone Enthusiasts. Why? They don't get updates not every six months, but every Friday! And trust me, they DID NOT make up the hardware specs. Its either that you're racists towards Chinese companies, or just a unlucky customer who bought a fake product.

First off I am not racist to anything at all. I give everyone a fair shake. As for MIUI your right I have never used it and never will. I don't support what they did.
As for the hardware specs I am not aging they made them up. Just stating what many have seen with buying knock off devices. If this device hardware is legit cool and I am sure people will be happy with it.

Xiaomi MI-2 - kind of future for Android Smartphones- ...
All the hardware of the Xiaomi MI-2 is surprising, especially for the 1999 Yuan chinese price...
For sure, the lack of a memory card slot is annoying, but it is the choice of Google too, inside all the Nexus models.
Now if people could write an authentic JB ROM in order to replace the miui "iOS like" ROM, and if the international price could be really low, I would be inclined to replace my Nexus
Xiaomi 2
Xiaomi 2 is nice between my and my girl we have the last two previous models....her service provider in china will give the phone free when she signs a new contract and I will be trading her a JM phone for it.
