Should I get it? - Captivate General

Found a Captivate on Craigslist for $150. I have an iPhone 3G right now, before that, a Blackberry Bold 9000. Would it be prudent of me to grab this device and try it out for a while before deciding what new Android device to get? Could I have enough fun and time with it before transferring? Thanks for your help!

If it works and doesnt have a cracked screen, it sound like a good deal. Pm me a link to the c list page and i'll give you a better opinion

He lowered the price to $150. Seems like he wants to get rid of it. I could then sell my iPhone 3G to recoup some money back, so I might just go ahead and do it.

No, just offering to look at it for a second opinion. Maybe he missed something in the pics that could answer some questions, like why is someone selling a phone worth about double that for that price. I'm thinking its either bricked or broken.
Op, if you buy it,.update us on condition.

Check the GPS, I like my captivate, except for the GPS...

Almost all modern custom roms take care of that pretty well
Sent from my GT-I9000 using Tapatalk

If you go the custom ROM route, you'll have an excellent smartphone.
Other than GPS, of course.

I just recently moved to ATT from TMobile where I had the Vibrant. They are currently doing refurb Captivates for $10 (or at least were 2 weeks ago) - if you will sign for 2 years.

I have a captivate, and I've had a 3G before and the captivate is better in my opinion. Its has way more customization plus a noticeable speed increase. And if you jailbroke your 3G there's a computer app called one click that makes it easy to jailbreak or "root" your captivate.

Anyone live in NJ, want to trade for Atrix?

Thinking about trying the inspire again, and I'm past my 30 days with the atrix. Its a fine phone with a huge battery and nice screen. Anyone want to give one a try let me know. I have an incipio feather case ill trade with it. Both case and phone are in mint condition. Inspire must also be in mint condition.
...and do we just switch the phones and keep our SIM cards?
That won't create a problem with AT&T&T-Mobile?

I guess. Shouldn't be a problem, both devices are on some sort of smartphone data plan... it's not like one is an iphone data plan and the other is just smartphone.
And why are you interested in an Inspire? Bigger screen? Better camera? Something else?
Yes, what interests you in this whole deal? I am intrigued in this trade possibly and wanna make sure nothing is fishy here hahaha.
Haha there's nothing fishy, trust me. Truth is I've already owned an inspire. I love sense, and I basically got rid of it because of the battery life. I believe with the current roms and rocking green power premium, I could deal with it, and I want it back.
I'm a 23 year old college student, would only trade face to face, and would certainly let whoever demo the atrix to make sure its all good. I take exceptional care of all of my possessions. I'm the kind of dude that would lose it if so much a scratch happened on my phone.
They are both great phones, and I'm probable just being indecisive.
Well I was actually interested in the Atrix myself but am in the same boat as you hahaha. Well if you make up your mind pm me and maybe we can make a deal on the trade.

After thinking this through, I can't justify a trade without any sort of money thrown in to the deal. Especially considering I'm going to have to buy another case for the inspire.
I'm also sketched about the battery. Its nice getting 36 hours. Make me an offer if you're really interested.

Or on the other hand, could anyone do a store exchange for a brand new one? That would sweeten the deal as well

Difference is atrix has its bootloader locked meaning u have to wait on every update via IT'S. It may be dual core but nothing on phone takes advantage of the processor speed. My inspire runs at a great rate and for those quadrant lovers, mine hits 32000 compared to atrix's 2700? If u love atrix,go got it. I returned mine and motoblur is flipping pathetic. G2X Price Drops..?

Anyone else a bit taken back by the drastic price drops on the G2X? Not in a good way... I feel like the G2X could be the Vibrant all over again...

"The best technology never makes you think about it. It's just always brilliant."
- LG G2X Amazon Page
I'm sorry but with all the problems this phone has against it (similar to the Vibrant): Overheating, Shotty Network/Data Connections, Reboots, Lock-ups it seems like T-Mobile is readying for another magic trick. Granted, from what I've gathered reading these forums certain problems (mentioned above) could be completely unrelated. I personally feel that the poorly tinkered network/data connect software T-Mobile f***ed into this phone coupled with the completely separate battery issues are reeking havoc on the phones in a variety of ways.
Just a thought.
As a past Vibrant user (unfortunately) I felt compelled to report the similarities arising again... and all the Vibrant base got [after their woes] was a ****ty Froyo update and the Samsung Galaxy S 4G releasing swiftly via T-Mobile.
I really thought the Vibrant must've been a fluke for T-Mobile, as it was my first leap into the smartphone & Android markets (came from a flip phone, no txts or data). Seems I was wrong in my judgement for trusting them with a second/different product. Don't get me wrong... This phone is great (in theory) but so far it is dragging with bugs and this leaves me torn... =/
Your looking into it way way to much..... All phones on tmobile go on a quick sale... Hm... perhaps. I'll think it over a nice bowl to cool the thoughts down a bit lol, 4:20 is coming a little early this morning I suppose.
I guess I just want a phone that works [ultimately]... Seems like the T-Mobile way is to release half-assed, beta quality products (at least in these eyes, I understand experiences vary). I went along thinking T-Mobile was a great company until I jumped on the Android bandwagon. Guess one can't get too butt-hurt over a company acting as soulless as they do sometimes... it's in their nature. =/
Coming from a vibrant I see where u are coming from. It was the biggest pile of a phone I have ever had. It was also my first android experience after being an avid bb user.
I do see some short comings in my g2x but I hope things don't get bad. I also despise Samsung as a company and blame the vibrant fails on them. It seems ateast to me they push a product hard and never support it. They did the same thing on a TV I bought. After there lack of support on the vibrant I will never own another Samsung product. I just hope the g2x is not the same way.

I respect your point of view but I disagree with you.
I come from a Galaxy S 4G and this phone is way better and faster.
If you are experiencing those kind of issues, I would advise you to exchange it. I haven't really experience those kind of issues and the only real problem to me has been data disconnecting.
Now that I have flashed many ROM's I have come to the conclusion that EB 1.04 is the best and not many disconnections since I settle.

About to buy a G2X

Im about to buy a G2x from someone on craigslist for the low price of $280. Ive been reading the forums all day and it seems like i may just be buying myself some trouble. Im planning on flashing CM7 as i did on all my 3 phones i own right now. WHat should i expect and not expect? Is the phone even worth $280 considering all the issues?
CM7 works perfectly fine for me with the stock kernel. I have absolutelt no problems other than the torch app sometimes acting up. I would nab that deal in a heartbeat. I love my phone. Although it seems as if some phones on weird and slight occasion dont flash properly or just plain have a weird problem with APN's. And it is known that some G2X's dont handle overclocking and undervolting as well as others. I have a theory that alot of the nards that are having major problems all the time are doing something wrong or getting a bad download or something along the lines of that. Good luck and cheers!
i have had no problems with reboots whatsoever. also, if you read a little more you would see that gingerbread has been released by LG. Even though it may not be official a lot of users is reporting positive reviews so far. it's only a matter of time before we see custom roms using this base and our phones will be that much better.
As long as the hardware seems in good working order then yes it's a great buy.
its incredible that the price has gone up so much. i got mine for $99 + free activation! but you should be able to get it for $240. the gingerbread upgrade will fix a lot of issues and cyanogenmod with the latest drivers for gingerbread will take it the rest of the way. If I were you, I would wait until the price comes down but if you have $ to spend then go for it.

At $280 buy it. Now that GB is out, it going to go up in price when people start catching on, so far update has fix a few issues.
Yea great buy considering the phone sells for $499 plus tax whoever selling it for $280 is either an idiot or brilliant because he selling u a ****ed up phone

What? You can get G2x's for even lower than that on craigslist. It's not that he's selling a broken phone. It just depends on the person. I've seen brand new iphone's go for less than that. It's that some people just don't care to do their research especially if they got the phone on contact... They sell the phone for less than what they paid on contact..

Jumping Ship - Upgrade to Galaxy II

Goodbye Captivate, hello Galaxy II.
Finally had it with the quirks on the Cappy over the last year: the screwy back/home button, the flakey GPS and the real lack support with new ROMs.
Picked up my GSII and bit the bullet on a new 2 year AT&T contract. I have a grandfathered unlimited data plan (30$/Mo) and they absolutely hate me, I do a minimum 10GB/mo and usually closer to 20. I ignore the threats and emails. With the 4G/H+ that will only get worse. Initial speed tests hit 5-6Mbps, almost double what I used to get.
Initial observations;
- Lightweight (plus?)
- Oddly flimsy back battery panel
- Power connector on the bottom, finally.
- Screen is bigger and gorgeous
- Gorila glass doesn't rainbow or smudge as much but does attract lint.
- It's FAST. Hitting the Gallery is instantly populated, even with a 16GB external that's packed with HD photos, movies and music. Can't stress this enough, this thing is SNAPPY.
- Badly Bloated. While this is to be expected, AT&T really went overboard. Nothing a root wont fix.
- Much better battery life. It's almost double what my highly tweaked Cappy would get and this SGS2 is still stock.
- GPS is INSTALOCK. No, really. Tested this all over Los Angeles and it's been flawless.
- Faster, more responsive browsing. I haven't confirmed this yet, but it seems to be using different DNS servers to resolve names? Hitting a URL would normally involve typing it in and waiting for the lookup to occur, it's practically instant now on any URL. Maybe they're pre-cached? Again, haven't looked into this.
- Overpriced. Even on "sale" it cost me $70 and that included trading in my Cappy, plus I had to renew for 2 more years.
Bottom line is that Samsung seems to have addressed many of the glitches that plagued the Captivate. Running GB (UCKH7) stock is an obvious factor; It comes with 2.3.4, and 2.6.35.7 kernal.
All of those things help but, overall, the hardware is a considerable leap. It's an impressive phone and I recommend it to anyone considering an upgrade.

Has anyone seen John Connor?
I totally agree with Captain Zero's observations. A friend of mine picked up the AT&T GSII, and after playing with it the three of us with Captivates are super jealous. The phone is phenomenally fast. I'm running Teamhacksung's ICS and another is on CM7 with a mild OC, but nothing we do compares to the smoothness of the GSII. Even the Skyrocket has the slightest stutter from time to time when I was playing with it at the AT&T store.
Lol the skyrocket was the phone that reportedly exploded in someones pocket. Not the OG. I think.

I'm sold!!
I just upgraded to SGS II on friday and i absolutely love it. Yes the screen is bigger & brighter. The thing runs like it's on red bull concentrate! And that's before i root and overclock it...
So here's a rundown on my first impression. My cappy never got over 16mb down on my wifi connection - the first run of my speedtest.net app get me 34mb down - 1 point for sgs 2.
Second, i was able to download and install all my apps from the app store one by one FASTER than my cappy did it with titanium backup, that alone almost made me cuss around my children!
Third, browsing is stupid fast - it almost never hiccups on pages.
Fourth, 4g is awesome and i've never been able to get 1.5mb upload with ANY modem on captivate, let alone 6mb down and not even on 4g.
5th, it's lighter and the batter lasts about 40% longer than my cappy.
The camera has a FLASH! You can even download an app to use the flash as a flashlight.
Well done Samsung! Now lets see what i can screw up by rooting this baby
P.S. I did not upgrade to the skyrocket because it does not have Gorilla glass AND even though the processor is clocked faster, it does not perform faster in tests... I'll stick with this one for now.

The s2 i tested at an att store didn't have ciq in it. The skyrocket did.

Pissed the heck off. My little rant.

So I'm pretty darn pissed. My beautiful infuse was stolen today, along with my cherished 16gb sd card with all my music stored on it. I called up att and they deactivated it and i have insurance but there's a flippin $200 deductable just to get a possibly refurbished one while I can get a refurbed on on the online store for almost free with upgrade. What the freaking f? Now I'm back to my indestructible brick of a phone, the Tilt 2 with a new 3g sim card and figuring out what to do. My friend offered to sell me an old iphone 3gs and i'm also looking at maybe getting a refurbed gsII skyrocket for 20 bucks at the online att store but I dunno. I really liked my infuse and might get that again but maybe I should just switch over? I'm like at a bridge I'm deciding whether to cross or not. Any ideas or suggestions?
TL;DR stolen phone, deciding what to do next.
Sorry to hear that..
Edit
I would get something else besides the infuse. Get the skyrocket.

I edited my first post. I'm meant skyrocket not sgs2. Getting a smaller screen really isn't a big deal. You get used to it.

You didn't have where's my droid or my lookout on it for GPS locating? That does suck! I paid $190 cash for mine via a craigs list ad. Maybe you should keep your eye out on there.
Go for the Skyrocket. It's got the same 4.5" screen, but has better hardware (dual core, higher RAM, etc.)
Plus, it already has Gingerbread on it and official ICS has already been leaked.
But skyrocket too has the "black" color issue. I checked it out at the AT&T store when I went to return the note.
Or you could just suck it up for a few months and wait for the sgs3

Go for the skyrocket .. same screen and its a great device .. I have the infuse and the sky .. can't tell the difference except for the 4g icon .. I think the sg3 is just overkill for today's apps and stuff and especially if ur satisfied with how the infuse works (but that's just me) .. plus u will have a stable build of GB and ICS coming .. the skyrocket will get alot more love from att / Samsung than our infuse did :-/ ... although, yes, the development may not be as rich as our infuse section .. I have never had a problem with a refurbished phone .. usually they are returned phones within the 30 days but instead of sending them back to Sammy for new boxes and packaging, att does them

Now you're just being funny. I would quit using cell phones before I'd use a winphone.

I bet you have windows on your desktop. Just guessing.
Don't go back to the Infuse....AT&T won't be updating it to ICS officially. I liked my Infuse, but since I had the Best Buy buy back program I took it back and they gave me $240 for it and I bought the Note. The Note is nice, just wish the battery allowed me to have 3 or 4 hours of screen time at decent brightness lol
Get the SkyRocket or the Note. If you don't want either just wait a month or so for a newer phone.

I got the note for 150 without a coupon or anything... just rant to art or ask them straight up to help you, tell them that you don't want to pay for another infuse that will never be updated .. though its a bad ass phone
I sold my infuse to my brother and got myself the note .. I love the note!!!
