camera won't save - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket SGH-I727

hey guys! i got the skyrocket as a christmas present along with an otterbox case. i have this theory that otterbox cases make the phone pretty hard to break so we went to the park with a three-man water balloon slingshot and put my phone in it while recording. we shot it up and it landed in a pile of wood chips (around a tree). i picked up the perfectly fine phone and every works perfect except the camera.
i can take pictures/videos but when i press the preview box to see them, it says "No Items" but the weird thing is the amount of time i can video tape goes down.
it was saving to my sd card, but neither saving to my phone or sd card works. the gallery worked this morning (and i uploaded the video), but after a reset it doesn't work again.
a full phone wipe is NOT an option until i can back up my phone with my pictures which could be tomorrow morning
i can't post the video because i am too new to the form but after 8 posts maybe you guys could see it

I'm sorry, but that was a very stupid thing to do... just saying.
Now as for your problem. If it won't save, that's not a hardware issue. That's a software issue.
Have you tried viewing the photos/videos through the gallery app?

i know it was stupid, and i will never do it again, even though my phone is almost fine.
as for the gallery, here is how it goes. when i first went to gallery almost everything loaded, then i pressed back and reloaded and less and less appeared until only instagram photos, which continue to stay. this morning gallery and camera worked perfectly until i turned my phone off for a test
thanks for the quick reply and maybe a full reset would be the only answer

Yeah. That is definitely software. Very strange though...

Had this happen, unmounted the SD card and remounted and rebooted. Haven't had the problem since.

So you put your phone in a slingshot too?
I tired unmounting/remounting then reboot but it still doesn't work. Almost all my photos are on Dropbox so I think I will just do a titanium app backup then factory reset

No I wouldn't dream of putting it in a slingshot lolz. It also may be worth it to try another micro sd card if you have one. Could be a corrupt sd? There's a few fixes out there for this, just do a generic google search for the problem. Hope the factory reset works out for yah.

Video playback stopped working (Fixed?)

Recorded a video which seemed to go fine. Tried to play it back and got nothing but a black screen. So, tried playing a YouTube vid. Same thing, just a black screen. Tried a Watch preview, black screen. Tried a Flash video in the browser, same deal. Reboot, try again, still black. ??????????
Figured I'd be doing a factory reset, formatting the SD, who knows?
So, shutdown, pull battery, pull and re-seat the SD a couple of times, reboot. Now video plays fine again in all of the above apps.
Just an FYI.
Edit: Last night I turned off the phone and charged it overnight. Tried playing video this morning and the problem is back. Nothing but a black screen in all video playback. Going to format the SD and see if that helps.
No one else has seen this?
Update: Formatted SD yesterday morning, since then video has played perfectly.

Tried playing a vid I recorded on the phone, as well as YouTube, Watch, and flash in the browser. All just show a black screen.
Yes, with three factory fresh T-Mobile phones and SIM cards.
I can't trace it to anything in particular, but I am not letting it update itself. I am NOT an Android or HTC expert. And once it happens, the video playback is trashed until I do a factory reset.
T-Mobile tech support said this is a KNOWN issue, they have many identical complaints, and the best they can offer is to wait for FW fix.
A factory reset will fix the issue with all playback sources I have tried, but I can't tie it down to what triggers it. Rumors include Flash Player other than what is stock, YouTube app, etc., as well as an obscure sound notification checkbox in settings.
You can't just "re-choose" or "confirm" your phone as the player either - that did not work for me. T-Mobile knows its an issue, for whatever comfort that gives you.
Interestingly, it never makes the camera malfunction for snapshots.
Tough call, since HD recording is a huge selling point of this phone. I have not tried to download a video to my computer to see if it plays. I can't assume it is corrupted since it may have been playing fine all along, but I probably should check.
Also, other media players can't seem to play it either in the phone, but I am no expert their on choices.

Interesting.
I called HTC and they diagnosed it as a bad SD card. Shipping me a new one under warranty.
Called TMO and the CSR looked up known issues and this wasn't on her list. So, some conflicting info apparently from TMO.
Did a reformat of the SD and video is working for now. But then just popping the SD last night fixed it until this morning. So, we'll see.
I've ordered a 16Gb SD, and will be getting a replacement 8Gb from HTC, so will have a couple of cards to play with. I hope it's a flaky SD, since that's easily fixed.

So is "Restart" more like removing the battery? I did try a power off/on yesterday and it didn't fix the problem. Then resorted to popping the battery and SD, which did temporarily fix it. But based on a post in another thread, and the slower boot, it appears a restart is actually a more thorough reset than power off, which seems backwards. If so, good to know.
Regardless, having to reset the phone to make vids play is not acceptable. The real problem needs to be identified by HTC and fixed.

Update: Since I formatted my SD card yesterday morning video playback has worked perfectly. Will update again as needed.
Update2: Now I really have a black screen. Phone totally died this morning. Went to TMO store and swapped batteries, nothing. Door nail. Called TMO and it will be a week before I can get a replacement.

I really like the phone. Best phone available in the US for me. So, don't want to kiss it goodbye quite yet.
What I don't like is the replacement policy. TMO CSR told me all the stores are privately owned, and aren't actually part of T-Mobile. Since I purchased through Customer Care over the phone the store won't do a replacement. Ok, but they could ship me a replacement right away for a confirmed at the store dead phone, and charge my credit card full retail price if I don't return the bad one. Two hours on the phone and waiting a week for a replacement isn't a positive customer experience.
Well, something got changed with mine because none of that stuff worked for me, but now I no longer have issues with video. My rep said it was known. We did try the "Audible Selection" possibility but no help. I had to do a factory reset.
Maybe a flash issue, maybe a small FW push, I don't know.
I'm too new to Android to hack around and see, coming over from the Windows 6.5 crowd.
We'll see, but I think at going on 3 weeks if it was going to fail it would by now.

[Q] Is this a bad sound for my external hard drive to make?

Hi. This morning after I decided to backup some of my files to my SeaGate Free Agent 1.5TB HD. In the middle of copying some files over, I realized that I had some duplicates so I stopped the copying. However, after that I started getting this weird clicking sound that I think I have heard before. I just want to know if this is good or not and if I should just send it in. Recorded file of the clicking sound is attached.
Clicking with HD's can be the first indication of failure, I've not listened to sample and even if had could not make a judgment since some HD's are noisy from the offset, I'd advise on backing up all important files etc to other media.
Sent from my DHD using tapalagatalk....
indeed clicking sounds inside your hard drives is the sound of harddrivemaggedon
I used to have the same issue a couple of times. first time that happen, hd started to have bad sectors, 2nd time it died after a month or two after clicking started and that was really really painful
Clicking sounds are bad. I would take every precaution now to back up your data.
Hmm alright. I think it has happened before when I used it too much. If it happens again tomorrow morning, I'll see if I can send it in to Seagate. Thanks to all of you!

Camera and Video app issues.

Hello there,
I would like to know if some other users are having issues with tha pictures and video apps and what solutions if any. I received my nre Z3 and from the very first time I started tu use it I'm having serious issues. The issue is that everytime I turn on the phone's camera the phone turns very hot, it also constantly freezes out and the camera app crashes. It happens for pictures and for videos. I already own a Xperia Z1 device and know how to use the camera and settings and knoe that this is not normal. I tested the camera with the lower screen brightness possible and also with and external SD card with the same results. For worsen the situation, after being taking family pictures for the last 2 days, the pictures and videos started to become not accesible nor visibles. At the moment when the pictures were taken they were visible, but after a while, some of them can't be opened anymore. This firstly happened during the afternoon for some pictures taken during the morning, then later, 3 more. It has continued damaging pictures. Right now the device has did the same to 20 pictures and videos from nearly 50 taken. I rebooted the phone, restarted and also reset the phone and it is still showing the same bahavior. This phone has not been rooted and has been kept as it was when received. I never had these issues before with other phones. It is a D6603, running Kernel version 3.4.0-perf-g0961 cdf, build 23.0.A.2.93. Any fixes or suggestions? Is it real that this unit comes with factory unlocked bootloader? Could it be a software issue regardless hardware?
A couple of things in there immediately hinted me about your SD card, I mean not all your issues seems to be that but about the videos and photos been there and then don't is a symptom of a bad sd card.
Just to see what happens put another card, if you don't have it, just remove it and save everything to your internal storage and try a couple of videos and pictures again to see what happens and let us know.
I highly doubt it comes with an unlocked bootloader, but this does sound like a bad SD card. You could also try using a different camera app, although personally I don't think that will help much.

I tested with and without the use of an external sd card and I'm having the same issues. At least using the phone's internal memory I haven't lost any more pictures for now. I'll test during the day, but the phone's still getting very very hot and the camera freezes and app crashes.

That's exactly what I thought, and the reason I wanted to split your issues in 2, it's easy to relate one to the other and confused about it, but now that you know that are 2 separate things it's easier for you to approach it.
First, your SD card may be one of the thousands of fake 32 or 64 GB generic cards around (and even "Branded" ones, China is getting better by day on that department), they behave just like that, I just got another one of these last week, so don't waste any more time on it, it won't never pass from about 4GB of maximum storage, even when in your computer or phone it shows as a 32/64GB card it will allow storage for up to 4GB and then simply begins giving you all those issues.
About your phone getting warmer or hot while in the Camera App, this is an old issue with Sony Devices, it's more common on hot places like for us down here in the Caribbean, the first day I tried my D6633 it did that, I tried it a couple of times and the same, don't ask me how, but it got better, a lot better, to the point that hasn't happened to me again, only thing I did, as far as I can remember was using the Manual modes, and disabling the AR Effects and Fun Apps, the same 2 that while using them was the first time my phone got hot.
YMMV but it worth a try, obviously if you live in a hot weather place, using the 4k video feature will bring you the warning and it's normal that it will get warmer than when using regular features, but other than that, for me, not even a single occurrence after I disabled the AR stuff.

Repeated Micro-SD Mounting Notification Issue - Potential Fix

Alright friends. The Micro-SD notification issue that a startling number of people have been having. I have also been suffering this issue and did not want to believe it was hardware based. I have believed since the beginning, that this is an issue with doze settings killing power to the internal SD slot. I managed to track down what I believe to be the offending service that doze is messing with. Follow the instructions below to fix this:
1. Go into system settings and select 'battery'
2. From the battery settings, select 'battery usage', and within battery usage, select 'more' at the top right of your screen
3. Select 'optimize battery usage' within 'more', and switch the drop down in the next screen from 'apps not optimized', to 'all apps'.
4. Locate the 'External Storage' service, and set the slider next to it into the off position. This keeps doze from messing with this.
5. Make sure 'External Storage' shows up in the list of apps that are not optimized now - Profit
I have been using this for the last 24 hours and have had absolutely zero SD mounting/unmounting notifications outside of the required one when you reboot your device. I really hope this works as well for everyone else in here as it worked for me.
Please let me know if this setting works for everyone else in the thread below this OP.
MODS: Please pardon if I have placed this thread in the wrong section. I didn't see anything else related to a solution in any of the other selections, so I figured I would share these steps which seem to be working for me.
Thanks all.
PS: I do not know if it matters or not, but I advise a format of the SD card as well through the storage settings on your device. I did that after following the above steps as well.
This might also be applied to alarm apps to fix problems with them failing to go off.

Tried this before bed last night. Didn't format sdcard though, dont see what that would do. Anyway, woke up this mornin to an sd card notification :/ one thing i did notice though, instead of the screen slooowly fading on when turned on, it instantly turns on now. So it's definitely affecting something.
Worth a shot. Nice find!
I disabled battery optimization weeks ago and still got the SD card notifications. This isn't the issue. I'm 99% convinced this is a hardware issue.
In regards to alarm apps. Yes turn off battery optimization for them.
Sent from my SM-G935T using Tapatalk
Thanks for the feedback guys! Yes. I did receive a notification over the night while I was sleeping as well. The notification that happens over night is the only one I am receiving now though. I definitely consider this an improvement. I can live with one a day (not including if you reboot the device). I was getting the SD ejection/reconnect notification no less than 10-15 times an hour or so before this. I suspect that the external storage still goes into a low power mode or something when the phone is left in a state of prolonged inactivity such as during the night while we are sleeping. I am not sure if there is anything that we can do about that particular problem from our end though. I am admittedly not savvy enough to dig into the code.
I suspect that wonky/overly aggressive doze/optimization settings are to blame for a few issues that people are having with this device. I have noticed that the optimization settings are a bit of a mess. Go through and see what else y'all can figure out as well by tweaking these things. Feel free to keep the thread going with those findings.
I wonder if this is just how doze treats external storage....I wouldn't know. I have been a primary Nexus user for a while before the S7 Edge (still have a 6P as well) and as you know. There isn't any external storage in that line to 'optimize'...Lol

Interesting.....did you also turn optimization off for SystemUI as well? I have noticed a marked improvement by disabling optimization for both SystemUI and External Storage. I have what seems to be one of those problematic Vietnamese originated models.
I have a replacement coming in the mail and I will test both for a few days before sending one back to T-Mobile
For any in here who were interested about a follow-up. I have since received and switched out my devices. My new device is now 24 hours in, and not a single SD notification, excepting the one at the time of device reboot.
@jrwingate6 might be correct about the hardware thing.
I haven't messed with optimization settings either on this one. It just works.
I did still notice a marked improvement with the optimization settings tweaks on the device that was having the issues though
This is without a doubt 100% hardware related. I advise anyone having this issue to replace the device ASAP.

so how exactly did we come up with doze being the issue?
---------- Post added at 11:33 AM ---------- Previous post was at 11:12 AM ----------
went ahead and asked for replacement on live chat. have had s6 replaced once before never said anything about $5 exchange fee till now
It can be a faulty SD card or a non Samsung one that isn't playing nice with the S7 Edge.
My fiancée and I both have the S7 Edge and we both have the Evo+ (64gb from Samsung) and we DO NOT get any SD card notifications other than when we reboot our phones.
Sent from my SM-G935T using XDA-Developers mobile app
I'll add this to the mix:
S7 edge silver on vzw. Have been getting the notification a dozen times a day.
So I put lots of music on the SD and set it to continuously shuffle through (with the volume all the way down). Not once during the play has the notification shown up. Also hasn't shown up while transferring massive files onto this SanDisk 200GB.
If I actually eject the SD during playback, PowerAmp stops playback and doesn't resume when the card is reinserted. So I know the notification is not from the card being physically disconnected in the slot, because the music plays for hours on end in shuffle.
This supports the doze theory because the active read would keep the storage manager from sleeping.
So to make this a hardware problem, we need a hardware defect where the card is repeatedly identified as being inserted, but only when data is not being transferred to/from the card.
However, this does not explain reports of replacement phones not having the notification issue. Unless those users are configuring the replacement differently than the original.
Anecdotally, has anyone seen the S7 trigger a card notification while read/write to the SD was executing?

Yeah dude. That doesn't work this time around. The notifications still happen. The only way I found to get a marked improvement on this matter (outside of an outright exchange) is to turn off the doze setting for External Storage. This seems to dramatically improve things, but not make it perfect. I gave up the good fight about a week ago or so and had a replacement shipped to me. I haven't had a single issue with the SD notification since in the new device, and my setup is exactly identical to my original device. The only difference is that I haven't had to mess with the doze settings.
the only fix. tell your customer rep you have unmounting/mounting issues and you have done factory reset/ clear cache. tried 2 or 3 different SD card or tried SD card on another phone and it works. have them replace the phone and done. had tmobile replace my phone, fastest ever. got it in 2 days and i live in hawaii! 2 days usually means 4 or 5. but no SD card notification for 3 days now. only get it on restard
I used to only get it on reboot and now it's 2-3 times a day. Wonder if it's just the sim tray? I'd rather shell out a few bucks for one than buy a whole new screen protector and dbrand skin. Lol
Sent Via My Samsung S7 Edge
I posted earlier (above) trying to explain why this could be a software problem, but it isn't. It's hardware. Swapped out the S7 edge at the about 12 day mark with VZW and got a new phone. SD notification only on restart now. Rep asked if the phone was losing the SIM as well.
Anyone noticed also that the new posts of SD problems stopped about two weeks ago? Because they fixed it after the initial run.

I just ordered a replacement because of this issue, it does seem like i am having slight network performance issues as well. We shall see.

Anyone else facing these problems?

I have a T-Mobile S8+ and its having problems that I can't seem to shake, and I will most likely have to return for a different one. My S8+ has been shutting off more than 6 times a day, randomly. Most of the times when I am not touching the phone at all. It could just be laying on my desk at work and just reboot for no reason. And no I do not have the auto restart option on, I double checked that. Also noticing that AOD sometimes doesnt come on at all, and no, nothing is covering the sensor to stop it from coming on. And the other issue I'm having is youtube. A few times I've gone on youtube to watch a video and 480p is the max resolution and thats on WIFI or Data, and I will go on my Iphone to the same video and it will be 1080p. So thats pretty disheartening with such a beautiful screen. And my last gripe is the SD Card. I have saved some of my apps to SD card, like I have on many of my other phones, and the app icons disappear and just show "SD CARD" as the icon for those apps, I've seen that before on other phones but it was only once in a blue. On this phone its almost every time I open the App drawer. I am using the 256GB Samsung SD Card that they have been giving on their pre orders for a while now. For being the newest phone Samsung offers, it shouldn't have all these problems that many of my older phones didn't experience with much lower specs. Back to the T-Mobile store!
It's an imperfect world we live in.

Try removing your SD card and check whether all your problems are solved. I think all your problems is related to the SD card.
YouTube videos issue try changing your resolution from settings/display and check if it's fixed.
If not just factory reset and check.
I believe you have restored or transferred everything from your old phone right.

This is the same SD CARD, I've used from a Galaxy S7 Edge, LG V20, LG G6, and my original Galaxy S8+ that was returned due to the red tint issue, and every time I switch a phone I delete everything off of the card except the pictures. I also start every new phone fresh and never restore anything. This is the first time its caused this issue. So I dont believe its the SD Card, but I do believe the issue with the phone is something related to the SD CARD. I have other SD CARDS a 200GB class 10, but I of course would rather have 256GB which is also class 10. So I dont know, I will format the SD CARD when putting it in the new phone, and see if the problems persist. If they do, will swap for another SD CARD and then see if they still happen. And also the youtube videos after a while start to show up in 1080p but for some reason some start off 480p, not sure why when my old ipod gets full resolution everytime. Maybe its a youtube issue. Thanks for the suggestions.
