Nearing an ICS update? I think so. - T-Mobile myTouch 4G Slide

T-Mobile has had leaked ICS Roms for both HTC devices running Sense 3.0. The Sensation 4G, and Amaze 4G. Most people felt like the Amaze would never get the 3.6 Update. But now they have a leaked RUU, bloat and all. Now that a good number of Sense 3.0 devices have an ICS update. I think it's time for the Doubleshot to get a ICS update. The Gingerbread RUU was leaked before this phone came out. I'm sure Football will manage to get a leaked Rom. We have all the proper specs, and I know we have 1 Million plus ICS Update threads. But with all the new updates, come on. It's about time.

Fail Xo I posted in the wroung Section! Mods, please move this thread. I'm sick right now, didn't know what I did.

I sure hope you're right about this one...
Our phone will literally rocket off for development

Ya... But I just don't see any signs that T-Mobile or HTC is going to release a ROM like that for our phone. Hopefully they do tho!
Typed by ---- oh wait! I'm schizophrenic!

Either way, we've been making stunning progress even without an official update.
Have you checked out the sticky on ICS configuration tree in the dev section?
That's some great progress
I encourage anyone who knows anything dev to pop in and see if they can help. It will make cooking roms much easier and also greatly increase our chances of CM support.

Undeadk9 was claiming that he knew a "level 3" tech support at T-Mobile who told him there would not be any ICS for MT4GS. I heard all that sort of crap back when I had a Moto Cliq and the MT3GS, some "friend" in "tech support" telling bullsh*t. No doubt there is a friend, but believing that friend has information that nobody else has is very unrealistic.
T-Mobile updated even the ancient original MyTouch from 1.6 all the way to Froyo 2.2. I don't see them completely abandoning this phone, especially since the hardware is so similar to their other models like the Amaze 4G and Sensation 4G. HTC would only need to incorporate the Genius system.

You just confirmed that you really don't know sh*t. EOL has no bearing on whether a phone receives an update. T-Mobile has updated many phones long after they went EOL in their system. The entire MyTouch lineup, including the original, got updated to Froyo within a few months of each other, LOOOOOOONG after they had all gone EOL.
And what's the crap about no development on this phone? You can't be taken seriously spewing crap like that. Look around, dude. Here and Virtuous are full of dev for this phone.

I'm sorry but MMS and Bluetooth not working (to name a few of your "kinks") is a pretty f**king big deal. I would never call that stable.
And the closest to stable is DeSensed, which is ridiculous considering imitation widgets are GARBAGE in comparison.
Let's remember: Virtuous sets the standard for "stable". Period. Don't get me wrong, the developer community is great and I have appreciated them very much so over the years. But don't go branding their work to save your argument.
I hope that an official ICS update comes, but I doubt it. With the 3G slide, at least they kept telling everyone that an update was coming and it eventually came. Not the same case here.

Wow ..... I love xda and all these stable roms. These guys do a hell of a job. Dont let people get ya down we love all the devs here.... Im running premadonna right now and its quite stable

Don't know what rom you are talking about MMS and Bluetooth, but Primadonna has MMS, Bluetooth and almost everything else working for me. The main feature it doesn't have is tethering, but Opengarden and Barnacle does the trick on that too...

I threw AOKP in the mix by mistake. Either way, you're missing the point. There are stable (DEFINE: something I can use daily, with features I won't miss - obviously that differs from person to person) ICS roms out there. And if something like autobrightness isn't working, and that's what got you in a hunch, then you need to stick to the stock rom. Honestly I could care less about little quibbles like that.
My point is 95% of what you would need, even on a daily basis is working. And for some roms, it's even more than that. That's pretty outstanding considering we don't even have an official kernel or update.
Honestly, this thread has spiraled into a pointless opinion thread.
I refrain from posting any further.
You may think what you wish

I keep seeing people on here saying "phones with sense 3.0". I hope yall realize that we don't even have a real version of Sense.. its a Rosie/Doubleshot version. I don't see HTC modifying/myTouching the new version of sense and ICS for the doubleshot.

Which is simply your uninformed and unknowing opinion, no more credible than anyone which differs. You claimed to have "inside information", which is pure bullsh*t.

I hope so. None of the custom ICS ROMs are stable, always several things missing or not working that prevent me from using it long term and those ROMs havent been updated in over a month.

Like I've said in several ics threads like this, the mytouch 4g will not receive ics.
Reason being, the mt4g has T-Mobile's sense version(my sense). For the mytouch 4g to be able to receive ics, T-Mobile would have to get rid of their mysense version of sense which they won't do on a T-Mobile specific device or HTC would have to create 2 versions of ics, one compatible with mytouch 4g's mysense and a regular ics for the rest of the devices.
You guys also gotta realize we didn't even receive a sense 3.0 update.

U all keep forgetting that HTC rebranded the phone in canada to the HTC Panache...
So its not only a MYSENSE Tmobile phone
so it is possible that other carriers in canada request that ICS gets on this phone
thats my 2 cents on this subject

Exactly, in Canada. If my memory serves me rights, they didn't even receive android 2.3.4.
But lets say he Canadian version of the mytouch receives ics, the US T-Mobile won't. Again same reason, panache=sense/T-Mobile mytouch 4g=mysense.

I think the fact that the myTouch phones use the stupid, TMO customized version of Sense means OS updates will be slightly delayed compared to other phones that use more common user interfaces (only the myTouch phones use "mySense", but there are lots of HTC phones that use regular Sense). That being said, it would be shocking if a phone with hardware as powerful as the MT4G has doesn't get a 2.3 update, or even 2.4 if that comes out eventually.
Shocking yes, but typical in the logic of big business? Not at all.

1) Do you really want an update from t-mobile?
2) If the G2 gets it, my guess is the MT4G would follow - considering the hardware similarities.
3) CyanogenMod7>Any OTA from T-Mobile.

The vast majority of MT4G's and in fact all Android phones are not rooted. Although most XDA users don't want an OTA, most users of the MT4G would benefit from it. Also, the development community can benefit from a 2.3 OTA because of kernels and drivers that are Gingerbread compatible specifically made for our device, that we don't currently have.

as much as i like AOSP ROMs i'd love to see some HomeBaked goodies using the real deal.
And i know TeamRoyal would cook up some mighty good stuff as well.
Yeah it would deff be nice to see ASOP for us,that would open up so much for us.
If the g2 gets it, and they release kernel source, it wont matter if we get an official version or not.
Ive never like stock, stupid crap i didnt need, slow, and built how they want..Cm7 has everything i need. But if the mytouch 3g got froyo, dont see why this phone, which started at 2.2.1, wont see gingy.
humm... when the ginger comes out i bet the honey based custom will also be out. i take the honey then

...oh yeah, non-rooted phones because you know, that was stated in the OP how silly of me to not infer this. Like I said and my comment speaks for itself, whether or not we get ICS officially isn't the question, the beta is out, rooted phones will get it. If you or anyone likes ICS that much and needs it, consider getting a phone that will support it non-rooted or just root your inspire if it means that much. Again, another pointless thread about ICS. Nothing has changed, it is still the same information.
AT&T always ends life of a phone after 2-3 updates. They don't support phones for very long because they're more worried about making money from new phones. If they supported their old phones, they'd lose their precious money.

Not only will ICS run perfectly fine on a single core fun (I have Beta IV) it uses less RAM than gingerbread does.
And I know this isn't the right place for it, but because I have no other posts I can't ask in development...
Have any of you guys found an Undervoltable Kernel that will work with ICS?
This really is gonna be a never ending issue. This will always be happening unless you get a nexus or euro unbranded version of the phone. As long as the carriers control the updates we may get one maybe two updates but that will be about it. This has always been and always will be the case

This... and T-Mobile seems to have shifted away from Sense to LG's POS framework with the myTouch line, so as far as T-Mobile goes, we're pretty much at EOL. Any official update we get would be a treat.
Regardless, HTC plans to officially update the HTC Rhyme, Desire HD, Thunderbolt.. all of those are powered by the MSM8255 chipset with that sexy 7x30 kernel, Adreno 205, and 1GHz Snapgragon CPU. We probably wouldn't have to do much once they all get their updates. Of course though, only greif we should have is camera. Possibly video decoding too.

I am not trying to be a jerk, but an official ICS rom would be nice as all the others especially for this phone are extremely buggy, and in my opinion unusable at this time. There are too many bugs, crashes, slowdowns and things that plainly don't work (like you know the basic function of calling people and people actually hearing you, or it actually working.)
I am sorry if this sounds pissy but I am just sick of these ROM's not working, and having to constantly wipe and re flash my phone over and over again, and trying out different ROMs. Finally finding one that works, I am just going to stick with MIUI until ICS officially works correctly and is basically bug free. it's just not worth to upgrade for it flashiness.
I know the DEV's on these boards try hard, DON'T GET ME WRONG. I have been on here since the Android G1 came out, and remember MANUALLY rooting that thing from the telnetD command. It's not that I don't have patience, but at this point with all the work DEV's do on phones now I can't understand how so many ROM's are still really buggy, and get constantly broken in an update, please release working firmware.
I understand that ultimately the DEV's are not responsible for us flashing with unofficial firmware, but you are still releasing YOUR firmware to the public for people to use, to get recognition. This is a catch-22 scenario, where yes your are not responsible, but almost expect people to use your firmware for either recognition or donations. I can't decide who to donate to anymore either, there are just too many DEV's working on too many things at once, stick to ONE ROM. Not five at a time. It's not realistic.
I think at this point, instead of every DEV working individually on there own ROM's, I think every DEV should just combine brain power and make the ultimate ICS ROM. At this rate, a stable ICS ROM will not be out for months. The source code was released in November, and it is now February, and the same bugs in ICS (camera not working), are still here.
It's not only that, constantly re doing my APPS gets really annoying. I am not paying for Titanium Backup, when I am downloading FREE firmware. Every firmware at this point, like MIUI, should have a BACKUP and RESTORE option built in for APPS, so when you do this over and over again, you don't have to pay for Titanium Backup, or re download your APPs, configure your WIFI, set your CPU, redo your menu options, redo your desktop, redo your shortcuts, your widgets, your background etc. etc. etc. over and over again.
I understand this is a different framework, but seriously now. Please stop releasing almost unusable firmware. I am kind of sick of being a beta tester, I do not mind reporting bugs. But at this rate I will destroy my NAND on my phone from wiping and flashing so much. Which CAN happen, and eventually will happen. If you seriously want me to be a beta tester for your firmware, give me a secondary pone and I will be happy to constantly flash and reflash the phone over and over again to test this.
I am sorry if this sounds *****y, but it just starting to get on my nerves. I mean it comes to a point, is this phone even worth it? I can see DEV's are mainly focusing on the newer phones, I do not blame them. But at this point if you want to release your work and have people see how good you are at what you do, ask people to be a beta tester and send them a testing phone so they don't have to risk destroying there phone.
Please forgive me I don't want this to be perceived as trolling but, I have to get this out before I get this out more immaturely somewhere else. I am trying to explain and get things out as professionally as I can.
Thanks

I appreciate your frustration and impatience for a fully functional ICS ROM. I'm sure most of us (including the dev) are in this boat. I do take exception to you complaining about being a beta tester. This is your choice. The dev has not misled you in any way as to the code quality:
[ROM/WIP][AOSP] CynogenMod 9.0.0 Alpha [ICS][4.0.3][02.14.2012]
[ROM][ICS][Beta][2.2.3] MIUI V4 || Unofficial Port for MT4G [UPDATED 02.07.2012]
[ROM/WIP][02-14-2012][AOSP] Virtuous Quattro Beta r1 [ICS][4.0.3]
[ROM][ICS][AOSP][Beta 7.1] .: :: Creamed Glacier :: :. [UPDATED 02.07.2012]
It sounds like you are not a good candidate for being an alpha/beta tester and you may want to hold off until you see "Alpha","Beta", or "WIP" (work in progress) disappear from the ROM titles.

Spam HTC's Facebook. Let them know we want ICS.

http://m.facebook.com/HTC

Ok, since HTC won't answer our questions for an ICS Update. Why don't we just constantly ask them on Facebook? I feel that everybody on XDA want ICS. If we get an Offical ICS Kernel. We can have a massive jump on Deving. Proper soucre for 1080p video, fullying working AOSP roms. What else is there to do? Wait? If we stay quite, they'll think we sont care. We need to let them know we want ICS. So I ask of all the XDA Doubleshot users. Just constantly ask HTC for ICS on the Mytouch 4G Slide. Ask a lot, ask 10 times a day. Ask 1000 if you can. If 10 people post 5 times that's 50 post. 50 post HTC will see knowing we want, and need ICS.
I thank those who will do this. Let's help our devs out, and get those AOSP lovers a fully working Rom.
i agree with you altough i don't use facebook.
but anyway the point is that just staying quiet won't do any good to us, we have to make them know we actually want ICS because from the looks of it, they have no intention of updating our phone
I thought it was up to T-mo though not HTC. So would this really do anything?
ICS is T-Mobile's fault, not HTC's. HTC can only release an update if T-Mobile calls for it.
tl;dr: Spam T-Mobile for ICS
both t-mobile and htc are involved in the decision, but the work is done 100% by htc
anyway, i don't think we would get something out of t-mobile but maybe from htc yes.
i would point out that while it's a t-mobile branded phone it still has the HTC logo on the back and wasn't HTC one of the companies that adhered to the Google initiative to keep phones updated for atleast 18 months from release ?
those are the points to work on, hit HTC's pride and *maybe* we could get something back. T-mobile couldn't care less imo
i just asked t mobile on their Facebook page and they said this T-Mobile is committed to enhancing customers’ experience with our devices, including providing upgrades to the latest Android operating system -- Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich). We are actively working with our OEM partners to ensure that a number of eligible T-Mobile devices are upgraded to Android 4.0 in the coming months and will communicate updates as we have additional details to share. ^CL

At least a 1Ghz Processor [X]
More than 512Mb Ram [X]
Atleast than 400Mb of System Mem. [X]
Some basic things needed for ICS. So we are in the ranks of an upgrade. If T-Mobile gives us a ICS update I'll never use another carrier for the rest of my life.

don't get too excited. that's just some standard PR response. We should keep going until we get some official and specific information about our phone
Everybody do what I did and ask them to leak us out a ROM.

Good news? The newest update coming on March 19th (Tomorrow) is a major fix. Making the stock very usable. The same update is coming to the Mytouch 4G, being th last it will get. T-Mobile is still going to update our phone. Since this new update is going to fix all bugs. That only means a OS update can come. So those on stock roms have a nice update coming.
Also we have hope now. Mabey we'll get a leak??

It is handled by T-Mobile. HTC might already be developing an ICS ROM for our phone, but their lips are sealed until they get word from T-Mobile that they are allowed to release it or even announce it. Even then, such an announcement would be done by T-Mobile anyways.

And same thing with the myTouch 4G. They got updates slower than a pig through molasses. They're still getting one last update after being released for 16 months. It took them forever to get Gingerbread, but they still got it eventually. No need to be so negative. The MT4GS hasn't even been out for a year.

We'll probably get an ICS ROM, but don't expect it any time soon.

If you look at the update it is the paused mr that messed up the HTC unlocker. But it will fix somethings.

Honestly, that's almost every device since ye olde Nexus One. That doesn't mean a thing. HTC and T-Mobile damn well know our phone can handle anything they throw at it.
Posted on HTC's wall. Although I think emailing HTC and T-Mobile directly will be much more effective. Facebook posts are good for publicity, but no one at either company is actively reading them.
---------- Post added at 05:19 PM ---------- Previous post was at 05:10 PM ----------
WOW, ok maybe I was wrong about them replying. Commented back on my wall post about 10 mins later
Hey, XXXX. We're still working on our portfolio to see which devices are suitable for the upgrade. We will have more information in the coming weeks. You can check out our latest note on ICS here: http://bit.ly/yTJiXX.
i will do this since im in love with ics!!!!!!
That's probably helpful, it is true that everything is assumed to be fine unless people say otherwise, I wouldn't prioritize a project I didn't think anyone cared about (from a business standpoint)
I don't have a facebook, and don't intend on getting one, but I know some people who do and can probably talk them into posting an occasional message about it.
Just try to be polite and inquisitive, don't use profanity, and use real words and not internet shorthand ( lol...omg...and other childish crap like that).
You are interacting with a business and in a business sense, the customer-manufacturer relationship is a business one, you're not talking to your friends on your couch.
If you are gonna do it, might as well try to be as successful as possible and being rude, crude and posting hateful or illegible messages will have a negative impact on your campaign. Not saying you are, but just putting it out there for the people who will read through this and act on the thread.

After all the recent back and forth between T-Mobile customer 'service' and myself I am so thoroughly disgusted with T-Mo from a customer standpoint that i'm more then casually running the numbers on the best way to sever our relationship.
I've worked a call center before, i'm always polite and patient over the phone, and AgentCherryColla I see myself in that quoted line - don't ask for much and set a low-bar for the 'i'm a loyal customer' mark... so that as long as they don't rock the boat it's smooth sailing. But...
...given that I still have at least one MORE customer service call ahead of me to continue working out my issues with them and what the last few have been like ... I really hope it doesn't come down to T-Mobile deciding to do something for their customers. In my experience that goes completely against their company philosophy... this is at least what they've taught me from direct interaction.
I think as soon as I can orchestrate it i'll be on simple mobile or someone like that instead (as opposed to 'in addition to').
I've got more faith in tbalden primarily right now, but also anyone else from the open source community that puts time into bringing us ICS from source. What we really need is ICS kernel source from HTC so getting through to HTC is an important step, they can encourage T-Mobile to give the nod a lot more then we can.
Hate to be the squeaky wheel just to get some grease, but HTC customer service is the complete polar opposite of T-Mobile. HTC has done everything possible, above and beyond, every time i've had to interact with them. Stellar company and I highly recommend them to everyone I meet...and i'm done paying them so they already got THEIR money, yet still do their best to treat me well and help me out. I wish more companies were like that, they're getting harder and harder to find.
Definitely not trying to be negative, and all we need is HTC ICS kernel source for the doubleshot, Google ICS source gets us the rest - but we'll never see any ICS kernel source from HTC without an ICS ROM so it looks like we need to buy the whole pie just to get the slice we want.
Good job with the letter campaign, if everyone keeps it clean and professional I think it'll help!

UPDATE, most recent news is here. T-Mobile US testing is complete. OTA soon to come.
Update: T-Mobile confirms the Update will be available starting on Wednesday 5/16/2012.
Update: A flashable zip version of the T-Mobile Stock ICS OTA is already available here on XDA. Thanks to Paten for finding the thread and of course thanks to Steve0007 for making it available to the XDA community.
Update: WiFi Calling Mod ripped right from the T-Mobile ICS OTA is now up!
Update: Confirmation someone has received the official OTA.
No Big News...
No big news here. I think we already knew that it wasn't going to happen. And all because of a new phone that is severely crippled, the One S.
Once again, if you want ICS bad enough study and learn the fine art of rooting your phone and pulling a custom rom. Plenty of them out there!
http://www.tmonews.com/2012/04/t-mo...ors-says-no-sensation-4g-ics-update-in-april/
From The Article on TMONEWS: "If T-Mobile could have releases the Sensation update already, they would have. Trust me."
Ummm when I hear trust me, I want to check and make sure my wallet is in my back pocket, my watch is still on my wrist and my fillings are still in my mouth.
Oh yea and Marketing has no control... MY ASS it doesn't!
You can root and go back to stock with s on with ease, yet everyone still complains. Makes no sense to me. ARHD is pretty much stock and works perfectly. All of the T mobile stuff works flawlessly for me on my US 4G which leads me to my next point. T-Mobile US is definitely holding the release back waiting for the One to launch. Its their choice though.
Root and be happy. After all, this site is here for that sole purpose. Don't get why people are pissed off yet still holding out on rooting, when all of the tools are here for them. Its such a simple process!

As if it can't be more likely that T-Mobile sent the buggy ICS update back. We already know HTC just released a patch for it. So even HTC is not trying to proclaim the first ICS release was perfect.
The Sensation is on EOL with T-Mobile, they want the last update to be good enough to walk away from. Not have to deal with complaints and another later OTA patch.
The T-Mobile update matters, because that could be why we got a patch from HTC so quickly. Also, there's no telling if the T-Mobile edition might have other updates.
Yea, we're all running custom ROMs already, so no big deal there is a delay. But just the same, the topic is worth keeping an eye on.

I am not mad, nor would I be over something like this. I could care less if TMO craps out tomorrow. I am just stating the obvious, sorry if no one else can see that...
At Tatdude806, I agree with you. Wrong is a state of mind.
Now about the post that page of the T-Mobile forum thread. I for one was not expecting the update this month. To be honest if it gets pushed middle to late next month it will suprise me. But thanks for the info Darnell_Chat_TN.
Last if anyone thinks T-Mobile does not want to compromise any potential profits for the HTC One S by updating the HTC Sensation 4G too early. Well let me tell you, start thinking it cause it is no doubt in my mind it is. Yes Marketing may actually have no control over a software update, but profits do. Meaning if the higher ups in the T-Mobile corperate offices see it as a potential damaging factor to possible profits of the release of HTC's New flag ship device..

I'm sorry to hear it, though not really surprised. The vagaries of quality assurance between two companies makes it pretty inevitable that it would much longer than normal.
Though disappointing, I'd rather have a quality build with no errors - particularly in the trouble-some wifi calling app - than get a stock build that has to be patched ad nauseum.

Not quite everything is in the ARHD release. I really miss the original swype keyboard from the stock rom. Maybe it could be added after ICS release by TMOUS, because I tried the swype beta, and did not like it as much as the original.

I totally agree and want to see some ROMs based on the official US update when it comes out.
I'm just saying its crazy to let yourself actually get upset about it when you can get a fully functional ICS Rom loaded on your phone with ease.
As far as the peeps who need WiFi calling to work, (we are all adults here for the most part), use GB until the official ota drops and stop complaining. We are 100% certain it is in the works. GB works perfectly fine until then.

Restoring Stock
To those of you that are saying it is a relatively simple matter to restore the phone to stock and S-On if you want following an ICS upgrade, am I wrong that to be left with the impression from what I've read that it is actually somewhat risky to roll back from ICS on the Sensation to the stock GB. Maybe I'm misinterpreting what I've seen, but the feeling I have is that yes it is pretty easy to upgrade to ICS, but that the firmware upgrade required to get ICS is difficult to undo if you want to rollback to the T-Mobile stock GB Rom.
This doesn't surprise me...tipical T-Mobile slowness!

In short, yes, you are wrong. If you are s-off rolling back software/firmware is simple and no more risky than it was to flash non-US ICS firmware and radio! Yes there is risk involved, but that same risk was there when flashing ICS so why worry now if you weren't worried before?
