No upgrade for Glacier/MyTouch4G - myTouch 4G General

So I was reading a blog about future upgrades for phones and saw no mention of our beloved MyTouch 4G. Any thoughts? http://m.blogs.computerworld.com/18077/android_23_upgrade_list

Android 2.3 Upgrade List: The Rest of the Phones
If a phone isn't listed here -- like the original Motorola Droid, for example -- it's likely because there just isn't much clear info available yet about its fate. Odds are, we'll soon be hearing more and more details with each passing week.

There have been some reports of HTC reps saying we will have an update, and the site says they do not have info on all phones

I think the fact that the myTouch phones use the stupid, TMO customized version of Sense means OS updates will be slightly delayed compared to other phones that use more common user interfaces (only the myTouch phones use "mySense", but there are lots of HTC phones that use regular Sense). That being said, it would be shocking if a phone with hardware as powerful as the MT4G has doesn't get a 2.3 update, or even 2.4 if that comes out eventually.

Shocking yes, but typical in the logic of big business? Not at all.

1) Do you really want an update from t-mobile?
2) If the G2 gets it, my guess is the MT4G would follow - considering the hardware similarities.
3) CyanogenMod7>Any OTA from T-Mobile.

The vast majority of MT4G's and in fact all Android phones are not rooted. Although most XDA users don't want an OTA, most users of the MT4G would benefit from it. Also, the development community can benefit from a 2.3 OTA because of kernels and drivers that are Gingerbread compatible specifically made for our device, that we don't currently have.

If CM7RC4 is as good as it is now, image what will happen if we get the official drivers, and various protocols.
as much as i like AOSP ROMs i'd love to see some HomeBaked goodies using the real deal.
And i know TeamRoyal would cook up some mighty good stuff as well.

Yeah it would deff be nice to see ASOP for us,that would open up so much for us.

If the g2 gets it, and they release kernel source, it wont matter if we get an official version or not.

Ive never like stock, stupid crap i didnt need, slow, and built how they want..Cm7 has everything i need. But if the mytouch 3g got froyo, dont see why this phone, which started at 2.2.1, wont see gingy.

humm... when the ginger comes out i bet the honey based custom will also be out. i take the honey then
man... im hungry

2.3
The MT4G will in fact be getting 2.3

We're definitely getting 2.3............ Multiple sources confirm!

great newss

Probably never, there are rumors of the g2x getting ICS 4.0 sometime, although that is highly unlikely. You can try out CM7 for 2.3.5.
What he said
LG and T-Mobile won't come out with any updates. LG releasing the source code, they abandoned support.
XDA is only reason this phone gets any kind of love and support.
There is hardly anything noticeable between 2.3.3, 2.3.4, and 2.3.5.
If you want a newer version, do a custom rom. I can't understand why people, on XDA especially, fight so hard to stay on a stock rom that is old and lacking. My neighbor bought a G2x the other day and I NVFlashed his phone in like 4 minutes (mostly due to downloading and finding the XDA thread for the NVFlasher).
Gingerbread is available in a plethera of roms for our device. I'd much rather LG focus their efforts on a timely ICS release.
I just wish nvidia would release drivers. I would love a2dp on the newer roms

I hope we don't get 2.3.4 or 2.3.6 if that comes. I want LG to just focus on getting out 2.4 as near as available as possible. All the learning from vanilla with driver fixes should make 2.4 a snap.
At this point nothing about 2.3 any variants makes any difference after 2.3.3
The G2X vanilla should easily be able to handle Android 4, or 2.4 whatever its named sandwich. The hardware is spec. And should be able to get onto the next version after Ice Cream, at that time it will be like a basic model that can still easily support.
I am expecting 2 more full releases on the phone, as the cost for LG to do, with the drivers worked out, should be very minimal.
Worse case, LG can license a custom ROM, and toss that out for a couple hundred K. 2 man years cost.

It is nice to see you post something other than the CAL... if you really think LG is gonna release anything other than maybe a small updae which i also doubt. maybe youll join with the CAL.. This is it even LG has said they dont even plan on bringing out the camera appp which i thought they would at least do.
As burk said no proof either way. But history means a lot and sicne this debacle i have looked at lg and see this has been nothing new with them. and Updates have been only carrier pushed for bugs from what i have read.
Yes it would be nice to see something new and great for the phone from LG but dont hold your breath.
hmmm
I would rather LG focus on getting all the bugs fix with this phone rather than releaseing a new os version for it plauged with the same issues and froyo and gingerbread

Wouldn't actually work since gtalk works using NEON which our processors don't have. I haven't tried the alternatives (like vtalk our vtok, something like that) but they don't apparently work well. google has to fix it unless there's been a development I missed.

After the fiasco of 2.3.3, LG is never going to touch this phone ever again. It's dead in the water for all they care, and Tmo isn't going to pressure them into updating because they're focused on pimping the Sensation right now.
CyanogenMod is the only way this phone will ever see ICS, I would put money on that.

LOL, LG will never touch this device ever again, I will bet actual money on that. CM9, however, is almost a sure thing. Frankly, I consider that better than the alternative.
I am sure that it will happen and I think that those of you who say LG will never touch this device are right as well. I could be wrong thought maybe LG will wake up and fix the device. HAHA
LG has a history of not updating devices. Like I have said before other 2X devices are still on Froyo. I asked girl at LG store in Bangkok when the device will get update to Gingerbread and she said "it is not being updated." So be thankful you got any Gingerbread at all, and don't count on ICS or you will be sure to be disappointed later.

That just got me excited.
Hopefully they don't burst the bubble and make us wait into the new year.
And honestly, I don't see why Google wouldn't release ICS. I mean I understand they're waiting for the Nexus to ship, so that people will buy it for ICS. But then their goal is to have all phones updated to the newest OS. By making their OS compatible with all hardware, and releasing the source code, they don't have to do any work while ROM developers make Google's dream come true.
This is the great thing about open sourcing. Love it!
HELL YAH! Can't wait for CM9!
They're probably going to release the source the day the Galaxy goes on sale.

Inspire to get ICS

Posted by LindsayC on 5 Dec 2011 2:52 PM

Found on the HTC support site I know that everyone is saying it wont get it due to no dual core but could they somehow optimize it for us? most likely AT&T wouldnt be getting the upgrade because they are lame but what about unlocked inspires? Just wanted to share this with the community

...oh yeah, non-rooted phones because you know, that was stated in the OP how silly of me to not infer this. Like I said and my comment speaks for itself, whether or not we get ICS officially isn't the question, the beta is out, rooted phones will get it. If you or anyone likes ICS that much and needs it, consider getting a phone that will support it non-rooted or just root your inspire if it means that much. Again, another pointless thread about ICS. Nothing has changed, it is still the same information.
AT&T always ends life of a phone after 2-3 updates. They don't support phones for very long because they're more worried about making money from new phones. If they supported their old phones, they'd lose their precious money.

Not only will ICS run perfectly fine on a single core fun (I have Beta IV) it uses less RAM than gingerbread does.
And I know this isn't the right place for it, but because I have no other posts I can't ask in development...
Have any of you guys found an Undervoltable Kernel that will work with ICS?
This really is gonna be a never ending issue. This will always be happening unless you get a nexus or euro unbranded version of the phone. As long as the carriers control the updates we may get one maybe two updates but that will be about it. This has always been and always will be the case

As if it can't be more likely that T-Mobile sent the buggy ICS update back. We already know HTC just released a patch for it. So even HTC is not trying to proclaim the first ICS release was perfect.
The Sensation is on EOL with T-Mobile, they want the last update to be good enough to walk away from. Not have to deal with complaints and another later OTA patch.
The T-Mobile update matters, because that could be why we got a patch from HTC so quickly. Also, there's no telling if the T-Mobile edition might have other updates.
Yea, we're all running custom ROMs already, so no big deal there is a delay. But just the same, the topic is worth keeping an eye on.

Last if anyone thinks T-Mobile does not want to compromise any potential profits for the HTC One S by updating the HTC Sensation 4G too early. Well let me tell you, start thinking it cause it is no doubt in my mind it is. Yes Marketing may actually have no control over a software update, but profits do. Meaning if the higher ups in the T-Mobile corperate offices see it as a potential damaging factor to possible profits of the release of HTC's New flag ship device..

I'm sorry to hear it, though not really surprised. The vagaries of quality assurance between two companies makes it pretty inevitable that it would much longer than normal.
Though disappointing, I'd rather have a quality build with no errors - particularly in the trouble-some wifi calling app - than get a stock build that has to be patched ad nauseum.

You can root and go back to stock with s on with ease, yet everyone still complains. Makes no sense to me. ARHD is pretty much stock and works perfectly. All of the T mobile stuff works flawlessly for me on my US 4G which leads me to my next point. T-Mobile US is definitely holding the release back waiting for the One to launch. Its their choice though.
Root and be happy. After all, this site is here for that sole purpose. Don't get why people are pissed off yet still holding out on rooting, when all of the tools are here for them. Its such a simple process!

Not quite everything is in the ARHD release. I really miss the original swype keyboard from the stock rom. Maybe it could be added after ICS release by TMOUS, because I tried the swype beta, and did not like it as much as the original.

I totally agree and want to see some ROMs based on the official US update when it comes out.
I'm just saying its crazy to let yourself actually get upset about it when you can get a fully functional ICS Rom loaded on your phone with ease.
As far as the peeps who need WiFi calling to work, (we are all adults here for the most part), use GB until the official ota drops and stop complaining. We are 100% certain it is in the works. GB works perfectly fine until then.

Restoring Stock
To those of you that are saying it is a relatively simple matter to restore the phone to stock and S-On if you want following an ICS upgrade, am I wrong that to be left with the impression from what I've read that it is actually somewhat risky to roll back from ICS on the Sensation to the stock GB. Maybe I'm misinterpreting what I've seen, but the feeling I have is that yes it is pretty easy to upgrade to ICS, but that the firmware upgrade required to get ICS is difficult to undo if you want to rollback to the T-Mobile stock GB Rom.
This doesn't surprise me...tipical T-Mobile slowness!

In short, yes, you are wrong. If you are s-off rolling back software/firmware is simple and no more risky than it was to flash non-US ICS firmware and radio! Yes there is risk involved, but that same risk was there when flashing ICS so why worry now if you weren't worried before?

I've done it 4 times in the past two days... Just don't loose power in the middle of a radio flash...

Nearing an ICS update? I think so.

T-Mobile has had leaked ICS Roms for both HTC devices running Sense 3.0. The Sensation 4G, and Amaze 4G. Most people felt like the Amaze would never get the 3.6 Update. But now they have a leaked RUU, bloat and all. Now that a good number of Sense 3.0 devices have an ICS update. I think it's time for the Doubleshot to get a ICS update. The Gingerbread RUU was leaked before this phone came out. I'm sure Football will manage to get a leaked Rom. We have all the proper specs, and I know we have 1 Million plus ICS Update threads. But with all the new updates, come on. It's about time.
Fail Xo I posted in the wroung Section! Mods, please move this thread. I'm sick right now, didn't know what I did.

I sure hope you're right about this one...
Our phone will literally rocket off for development
Ya... But I just don't see any signs that T-Mobile or HTC is going to release a ROM like that for our phone. Hopefully they do tho!
Typed by ---- oh wait! I'm schizophrenic!
Either way, we've been making stunning progress even without an official update.
Have you checked out the sticky on ICS configuration tree in the dev section?
That's some great progress
I encourage anyone who knows anything dev to pop in and see if they can help. It will make cooking roms much easier and also greatly increase our chances of CM support.

Undeadk9 was claiming that he knew a "level 3" tech support at T-Mobile who told him there would not be any ICS for MT4GS. I heard all that sort of crap back when I had a Moto Cliq and the MT3GS, some "friend" in "tech support" telling bullsh*t. No doubt there is a friend, but believing that friend has information that nobody else has is very unrealistic.
T-Mobile updated even the ancient original MyTouch from 1.6 all the way to Froyo 2.2. I don't see them completely abandoning this phone, especially since the hardware is so similar to their other models like the Amaze 4G and Sensation 4G. HTC would only need to incorporate the Genius system.

... reports of this phone being end of life'd very shortly, you can almost garentee they have no interest in updating this phone to ICS. Watch and see, it happens with almost all their phones.

You just confirmed that you really don't know sh*t. EOL has no bearing on whether a phone receives an update. T-Mobile has updated many phones long after they went EOL in their system. The entire MyTouch lineup, including the original, got updated to Froyo within a few months of each other, LOOOOOOONG after they had all gone EOL.
And what's the crap about no development on this phone? You can't be taken seriously spewing crap like that. Look around, dude. Here and Virtuous are full of dev for this phone.

I have to interject here. STABLE ROMs? Are you insane?
I'm sorry but MMS and Bluetooth not working (to name a few of your "kinks") is a pretty f**king big deal. I would never call that stable.
And the closest to stable is DeSensed, which is ridiculous considering imitation widgets are GARBAGE in comparison.
Let's remember: Virtuous sets the standard for "stable". Period. Don't get me wrong, the developer community is great and I have appreciated them very much so over the years. But don't go branding their work to save your argument.
I hope that an official ICS update comes, but I doubt it. With the 3G slide, at least they kept telling everyone that an update was coming and it eventually came. Not the same case here.
Wow ..... I love xda and all these stable roms. These guys do a hell of a job. Dont let people get ya down we love all the devs here.... Im running premadonna right now and its quite stable

Don't know what rom you are talking about MMS and Bluetooth, but Primadonna has MMS, Bluetooth and almost everything else working for me. The main feature it doesn't have is tethering, but Opengarden and Barnacle does the trick on that too...

I threw AOKP in the mix by mistake. Either way, you're missing the point. There are stable (DEFINE: something I can use daily, with features I won't miss - obviously that differs from person to person) ICS roms out there. And if something like autobrightness isn't working, and that's what got you in a hunch, then you need to stick to the stock rom. Honestly I could care less about little quibbles like that.
My point is 95% of what you would need, even on a daily basis is working. And for some roms, it's even more than that. That's pretty outstanding considering we don't even have an official kernel or update.
Honestly, this thread has spiraled into a pointless opinion thread.
I refrain from posting any further.
You may think what you wish
I keep seeing people on here saying "phones with sense 3.0". I hope yall realize that we don't even have a real version of Sense.. its a Rosie/Doubleshot version. I don't see HTC modifying/myTouching the new version of sense and ICS for the doubleshot.

Which is simply your uninformed and unknowing opinion, no more credible than anyone which differs. You claimed to have "inside information", which is pure bullsh*t.
I hope so. None of the custom ICS ROMs are stable, always several things missing or not working that prevent me from using it long term and those ROMs havent been updated in over a month.
Like I've said in several ics threads like this, the mytouch 4g will not receive ics.
Reason being, the mt4g has T-Mobile's sense version(my sense). For the mytouch 4g to be able to receive ics, T-Mobile would have to get rid of their mysense version of sense which they won't do on a T-Mobile specific device or HTC would have to create 2 versions of ics, one compatible with mytouch 4g's mysense and a regular ics for the rest of the devices.
You guys also gotta realize we didn't even receive a sense 3.0 update.
U all keep forgetting that HTC rebranded the phone in canada to the HTC Panache...
So its not only a MYSENSE Tmobile phone
so it is possible that other carriers in canada request that ICS gets on this phone
thats my 2 cents on this subject

Exactly, in Canada. If my memory serves me rights, they didn't even receive android 2.3.4.
But lets say he Canadian version of the mytouch receives ics, the US T-Mobile won't. Again same reason, panache=sense/T-Mobile mytouch 4g=mysense.
