when looking for a release date this morning, I found this at neweeg.

Although the specs aren't what I was told, look at the display ratio, is this the A700 or just a step on the way
Sorry about that, I got a little excited when I looked at the specs.
Acer A510-10k32u
Its right there in the title of the listing......
510 =/= 700
Hi guys,
even though I wish you would be right and the A700 would be out already (I am really hot for it) the A510 is the "predecessor" for the A700. As far as I know the difference is the display. The A700 will have a HD screen. The A510 has a regular one only.
I would appreciate getting more information from Acer when I can buy the 700...
realShadow
*facepalm*
The a510 has about a 720p display. Its not bad at all. In fact you won't see much of a differance between a 720 and 1080 on a 10 inch screen. Sure it will be a little clearer and crisper but not by that much. I was gonna wait for the 700 but when I heard it was gonna be around $700 I decided to go ahead and get the 510. Like ive said before. I can build a new AR15 or some other nice toy like that for that much.
Preorders are live now.

You mean it's almost seven days since first french ppl got their a700
I just ordered mine. Should be there in 2 or 3 days... hé hé !!!

I'll never understand how people try to argue that these differences in screen density don't matter. Of course the 224PPI screen on the A700 is going to be generally much sharper than the 149PPI screen on the A510. Text, pictures, pretty much everything will look significantly better. And yes, I'm writing this on an iPad with 264PPI, which I'm only using because I've yet to find an Android tablet with a screen that comes even close to being as pleasant to use.
Of course, this post is moot, because the A700 is being priced at $549 for 32GB, which is a kick in the teeth to people, who just paid the same for the A510. But seriously, the higher the PPI, the better the abler experience.

For what u get the price is OK. The screen is worth the extra 50 bucks. And there will surely be offers for less. I'll take this over the A510 anyday. Just my 2 cent.

Hi,
I have my A700 since last saturday, pre-ordered it from Amazon on may 9th.
I'm missing a little performance, but runs ok for me.

Agreed. I have the iPad 3 and have had the Thrive, A510 and Toshiba Excite. Though for games there is not much difference, there can be a profound difference for apps, web, images and video.
That said the, gpu is a lot more robust on the iPad 3, so not sure if a performance hit would be worth it on the A700. Nothing is for free, so not seeing how there is not a hit with the 700.
I also preordered it at Amazon for 479 EUR but I will not get it before June 20th
I am really excited about the Full HD display. Any experience with that yet?
Ordered the silver one on Thursday at notebooksbilliger.de and got it on Friday. I'm now using it

Very true re: the Tegra 3 being impacted by the 1920X1200 resolution. Which is why I'm seriously considering the Excite 7.7, which will have decently high density at 196PPI but still good performance at 1280X800. Of course the screen is smaller, but that might be a plus. Also, AMOLED would give good colors and contrast. Of course, it's also expensive at $499. Maybe the Nexus will have a decent screen.
We'll see... Lots of choices.

Hello all,
I'm actually considering to give my new Galaxy Tab 10.1 for a Xoom because
of the recent newton ring issue on the screen.
The xoom seems pretty THICK and the display not so good if compared to
the 10.1. But this issue is starting to drive me crazy.
Any suggestion, consideration, opinion?

"Hey this samsung sucks and has a crappy screen, someone want to trade their flawless xoom for it?"
Let me know how that works out for you
It sounds pretty bad to me but I think there is a misunderstanding:
I'm not trading it, I'm returning it to the shop.
I'm here to ask for conscious comparisons, considerations, concerns between the 2 devices.
It seems so thick and heavy compared to the galaxy tab, and the screen...
I dunno...asking for a substitution, for a change with xoom or another device or for a refund?

The xooms screen is superior to the gtab 10.1 qhd is higher Res then there amoled crap.
Xooms are thick and heavy, I chose it as the tablet for me for that its sturdy. The galaxy tab 10.1 and icrap 2 seemed light and fragile

I compared the galaxy tab 10.1 to the xoom display and, frankly speaking, xoom display is far less bright and brilliant than the SGT 10.1 in my opinion.
I really can't find what else I should bet on.

I don't know what you're talking about. Probably the info you have are wrong, because they've both 1280x800, and both are 10.1"...
And the Tab isn't amoled but EPS for high brightness and contrast.

Sigh... the dangers of buzz words. We can all thank apple for their marketing use of "retina display", which led Android manufacturers to using terms like "qHD", etc.
qHD is in reference to phone screen resolutions; there is no "word", as far as I know, for the resolutions found on Honeycomb devices like the Tab 10.1 and the Xoom.
Concerning the Xoom and the Tab 10.1, they have the same resolution; although, as the OP has stated, the Tab's screen, in the opinion of many reviewers and users, seems to be more brilliant and good-looking compared to the Xoom's screen. Motorola is no Samsung when it comes to screen technology, so this shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone.
To the OP: I would weigh which is more important to you immediately and long-term. In the long-term, the Tab 10.1 will be the best device, given that it will, eventually, have pretty much the same software as the Xoom. Given the Tab 10.1's superior hardware, it will probably be the better device. As for right now, the Xoom is getting the 3.2 upgrade starting today, with no word on when other devices will get the 3.2 update (although there was no real announcement about the Xoom US Wi-Fi getting 3.2 today... so we could see a universal 3.2 rollout happening across all Honeycomb devices within a few weeks). In the world of Android, updates are no guarantee, however, with a device like the Tab 10.1, you should be good with updates for at LEAST another 12 months... if not more.
If I were you, I would decide what's more important to you rght now: hardware or software. With Samsung, overall, you'll get a better screen and a much thinner and less cumbersome package. With the Xoom, you'll get faster software updates. It's up to you, though, in the end. Happy choosing!
I'm also a tab 10.1 owner considering to grab a Motorola xoom my reasons:
Price. The xoom just dropped to $499.
Storage. xoom 32gb vs tab 10.1 16gb.
Extra ports at no additional cost.
Updates! the xoom will get them first so at least it will get to see ICS. Samsung has been nasty with their updates I'm yet to GB on my galaxy S. I'm running 2.3.4 on my Atrix 4g.
The only cons I could find on the xoom would be weight and screen quality, I dont care about the weight since I have to buy adapters for my tab and that for sure will add more weight to it.
I still have 12 days left on my return policy. I'm still researching pros and cons I still need to find out how the battery life on the xoom compares to the tab 10.1 but I'm 80% sure the tab 10.1 will be going back pretty xoom. lol
It does seem there are two models of XOOMs floating around with different screens. Mine is fantastic, I guess I got lucky and got the good screen.
Battery life is great. I unplug it at 6:30am, do light to moderate use with email, some browsing, words with friends, Pandora, process some payments with Square, use IP Cam viewer a few times a day to see who is at the front door. I will plug it in at night with 30-40% charge left.
On a recent cross country flight, I used it for a few hours on the first leg, and hour during the layover, and five more hours on the second leg, 40 minutes to the hotel (10 hours of travel) and then two hours of email/browsing and had 30% left.

I really don't know what's with the crappy screen thing. Look, I'm a painter, and color is very important to me as I use the Xoom as my travelling portfolio.
I want my colors true to life. Oversaturated color is pleasing...I play with it...but it would not show my photos properly. The Xoom (mine at least) has nice, true colors, even at +/- 60% brightness.
Also, it's not heavy when you get used to it...feels sturdy...like a tank.
Same type of performance, but this screen is freaking awesome. So love this guy. Acer used to remind me of low end crap. Not with guy. Best choice I have made in a long time.
Glad to hear your pleased with the device, with demandarin selling Asus so hard over there I'm surprised you made the switch . Hope you enjoy it as much as I do, backing up my blue rays now with bated breath!

Agree. Absolutely amazing. Finally back at Android again after having some really bad experiences with the prime. Bought an iPad 3. Was impressed by the screen but missed the Android OS. Feel like I'm back home Impressive screen, nice performance. My only gripes:
Screen sensitivity : even at the highest sensitivity setting it fails sometimes to register some taps .... Guess i need to get accustomed to this and tap a little harder. Then again...
Rendering of web pages: in general web pages look awesome, but on pages with a lot of text and/or graphics you see the dynamic rendering of the fonts/graphics to a higher resolution. Sometimes you need to wait before things are readable.
But all in all, a great tablet.
I'm glad to hear you guys are enjoying it. The one concern I had was screen brightness...any issues there to report? I don't really plan to use it outside.

The auto-brightness doesn't seem to work terribly well. Seems to put the screen "dimmer" than I personally care for.
I reset it to a static "30%" brightness or so, and it's fine for me now.
I did go out in direct sunlight (beautiful day out), to test screen readability. Cranked up to 75% and was good to go.
Hope this helps.
I am thrilled with the screen of my acer. I have always hated Acer products, and I have lots of tablets. But this tab is freaking great. Real solid build. Cant say enough about the screen. Just overall, the best Tab I have ever had...

Good to hear. I have a 16GB Gtab 10.1 right now and my biggest gripe is the screen resolution and storage. It sounds like this is a bargain at $450.
What about responsiveness?
Lag?
Sent from my LG-P920h using XDA
I had fears of lag too from the YouTube video that was out pre release. While I was syncing the first 12 hours there was some noticeable delay. Especially with app drawer. But 36 hrs in I can say its as snappy as I would expect it to be, especially for 450 and a 10 to 11 hour battery life. Can't beat the performance for the price

Hows the cameras?
With a good light situation (outside for example) the cam is fine.
Inside pictures seem to be a little grainy.
I'm noticing a lot of lag using ezPDF Reader Pro. I almost considered returning it to Acer until I saw the 25% restocking fee. I've been using an iPad 1 for the last few weeks to view Army regs in PDF format, and the iPad was much quicker at page-turns, etc.
One of the YouTube reviews talked about a possible update from Acer to optimize performance. Pure speculation, I'm sure, but that would be nice. I also heard that the Andriod OS isn't optimized for quad-core processors yet.

If the reviewer got the test unit from Acer, perhaps that was said to avoid upsetting Acer and future test units? Seems the Tegra 3 gpu was not intended for such high res displays, based on benchmarks compared to the A5X. Not seeing how this can be fixed by software, unless the actual data is downsampled to lower the load on the GPU (defeats the purpose of the high res, but would people really notice?).
Hey all
Im looking to venture into the world of tablets but with so many being available its all a little confusing! I like the look of the Nexus 7 for its power and incredibly good price but for me 7 inches is just a bigger phone I want something with the price tag and power (near enough) of a Nexus but with something like a 10 inch screen to make it feel like an actual tablet. Im only 16 with a part time job so i cant go for something like the Asus Infinity even though i would love that
So start shouting out your tablet choices people!
Your choices are quite limited; 10 inchers are usually at least $400.
I would recommend watching slickdeals.net for some reburbished deal if you really need one. In truth, however, the difference between 7 inch and phone is already quite significant and it makes the most sense for your price point (short of a "cheap" brand like archos).
i think go for the ipad if you like a bigger screen than nexus 7 ipad is also have the speed.
I love the size of my nexus7 so far there's not much I don't love about this tablet!I hear they are releasing a 10 inch soon so you could wait for that but I don't know if it will be tegra3 or Qualcomm. Again this tablet rocks! Rooted w/ stock ROM cwm recovery & trinity kernel.

I would recommend the Toshiba Excite 10 inch. It has HDMI out with an SD card slot. That's the tablet I would get if I wanted one.
Another good option is the Asus as you mentioned. You can look up the Samsung Galaxy Note Tablet. It comes with a stylus and I think it has app that directly support it. You can't go wrong with any of these. Just pick the features that you want and get it. I would suggest going to your local electronics store and trying them out to see which one you like as each of them have customized their Android OS with their custom apps and settings. All of the mentioned above have quad cores so you can't go wrong with that.
If you're looking for smaller/cheaper then you can go with the Samsung Galaxy Player 5. Its $200 and its what I use for my "tablet" experience. Its smaller and portable than the above but that may not be what you want. Note that this is a single core so you're sacrificing power and size but you gain portability.

If you are desperate for a larger tablet then you could pick up something like the Galaxy Tab. It's a bit older than the Nexus, but stil pretty decent, especially if you run ICS.
It's on for sale for £279 at carphone warehouse www.carphonewarehouse.com/mobiles/m..._WIFI_16GB/HANDSET?portal=GLSHOP&promo=GLSHOP
Otherwise I'd recommend a Nexus 7.

And i watch shows and movies for HOURS! There is some noticeable lag every now and again, but its usually pretty peppy! And it comes stock with ICS, they have even rolled out 2 updates since i bought mine! Thats rare! No word yet on if it will get Jelly Bean, but it doesn't matter to me, i love this tabby! Good luck on your hunt!
A good tablet would be the Toshiba excite 10. It has a nice screen, tegra 3, several ports, and very good speakers. The best part is that it's only $300 at Costco.

Hello everyone. Right now I have an Acer Iconia A100 7" tablet. I really want a 10" tablet but dont have a lot that I can spend for one. Ive been looking at the Xoom for a little while now since I can find them around the $200 range if Im lucky. The question is, with the Nexus 10 out now, is it still worth it to get a Xoom or would it be better to hold out a few months and save for a Nexus 10?
And if it helps, I would be using the tablet for a little of everything. Internet, music, movies, games and a lot of reading (mostly comics).
I greatly appreciate any info that can be provided.

Well, kinda depends on your needs. Xoom is and has always been a strong tablet, but at two years old, it is starting to show it's age.
Xoom is a versatile, solid, all around tablet, 32 gb with expandable storage, bluetooth, hdmi, and usb. It's weakness's mainly are the backlight, it's heft (for some) and it's age. 720p display, and about impossible to see outside during daylight(sunlight and overcast.) Tegra2 is a good processor but dated and unable to take advantage of all the benefits of newer games demanding the power of a quadcore like the tegra3 ( dead trigger.) Right now it is very minor things we are missing out on. Eventually there may be games we can't play at all. More than likely Jelly bean is the last official update the xoom will get. I can't speak for the developers. If you don't care about latest and greatest, but need something fully functional and good bang for the buck...... xoom is a definite option
Nexus 10 has a great display, true 1080p, and the A15 cortex dual core processor destroys the tegra3 quad core in comparison tests from what I have read. It is the closest any tablet has come to being what the xoom was two years ago. The deal breaker for me is no expandable storage.
Hope this helps

Thanks for the great info Draxin. You have me some things to think about. I can do without the 1080p and thinking about it I'm not sure that running the newest and greatest games matters. On the other hand viewing outside is kind of a big deal.
Decisions decisions.

Well, kinda depends on your needs. Xoom is and has always been a strong tablet, but at two years old, it is starting to show it's age.

Lol, sorry Drex - showing its age? La La La La ... not listening. (covering ears) Any device is relative to it's users needs. Newer is not always better. Bigger, faster, lighter most likely (in some aspects, other areas maybe not). Does it really suit my needs? Probably not. The next best thing, will be replaced by the next best thing the following year. Vicious cycle my friend. Marketing is evil and we consumers are its puppets They can always count on that buyer that must have the newest whatever. We are making these guy rich lol.
Happy New Year! Xoom Xoom-

True. But Johnny Danger isnt looking to sell off a xoom, he wants to know if it is a viable option still in the 10 inch market. So he needs to ask himself what he wants from his new tablet before purchasing. Xoom is a fantastic tablet and easily one of the best purchases I have made, but I made my purchase almost a year ago when it was still running honeycomb stock and developers were porting ICS. I Got to watch it make leaps and bounds in functionality, smoothness, and reaching for the limits of it's potential. Now developers are facing the limitations of the space in the system partition for OS. And it sounds like they can't scrape any extra space from the internal sd or make some available on the ext. sd cause it is locked. So if Johnny Danger wants a solid, hard working tablet that can do anything he wants to do now, and should be able to do most(if not all) tasks in the future, the xoom is a perfect fit, he just needs to be aware that what we have now may be close to as good as he will get over the next two years of ownership(not saying it is bad), just saying don't expect much more from Motorola.
If he wants the latest and greatest games at their full potential, see movies in full resolution get OTA's of newer OS's and have a tablet equipped to get the most out of anything coming down the pike in the next two years, he needs to save up and get the nexus 10, conveniently priced at around the same range the xoom was when it first came out
If you asked 3-4 months ago, well yes.. But now there is no reason to buy a 2 years old device (and was out AOSP) with price ~$300.

True, I fully understand the question. Basically the gist was yes it is still worth getting if it suits his needs no argument.

I'm fully happy with xoom and this will be long relationship. I had in my hands asus transformer but truelly i cant see any limitations or u want gaming on it - but its not for it.
Well I went ahead and got a xoom. I bought a used one on Craigslist and feel that I got a good deal. I got 32gb xoom, original box and charger, official Motorola xoom cover, and 2 screen protectors for $150.
I absolutely love it. Everything runs great, including the games I play. My son was watching YouTube videos on it and sometimes it hiccups but that doesn't bother me. The thing that really took me by surprise is the battery life. It lasts so long on a charge. Now I understand why people were so upset with the Acer iconia tab a100 battery life. This is one of the fewer purchases I have no regrets about. Just a fantastic tablet.

Good on ya! I really don't think you'll have any regrets, it's still a very speedy tablet and the build quality is unsurpassed.

You're kidding yourself if you think it has anything to do with marketing. The Xoom has been showing its age for a while. Its great that devs continue to bring us the latest firmware but even they have acknowledge that the Xoom's limits are being pushed.
It is as you said, relative to needs, but I think its also good to think about the future. What will a 2 year old device be able to do a year from now? Two years from now?
I'd say save up honestly and hope for a sale on the N10 (tho it looks like the OP already invested v0v)

Thanks Alex, I will see about doing that.
@Cubanluke88, Im well aware that a 2 year old device is not going to be on par with the most recent devices, like the N10. But at this point it was a matter of me wanting a 10" tablet that would do what I needed it to do now. I may still get a N10 in a few months and just give my Xoom to one of my kids (I have three, two that are teens). But for right now, its working great and I couldnt be happier. Especially at the price I paid. I might be getting a new job soon and if I do, Im going to be taking a hour train ride to work and back and Im just happy to know that Im going to have a nice big tablet to provide entertainment on those train rides if I do get the job.
Xoom or Xoom II or Xoom II ME?

Like the OP I'm looking to get a reasonably priced tablet for Browsing, a little eReading and some video watching. It's hard enough to justify what is really a gadget purchase and I certainly can't justify the ~€500 price ranges of the top tablets. My target is around the €200 mark.
I like the look of the Nexus 7, but the small screen bothers me a little. I've a Sony Xperia S and 7 inches doesn't seem to give me enough of a boost over it's 4.3 inches to justify spending €250. So I'm looking at reputable brands which have been discounted (due to age or market forces) rather than the budget trinkets that you can get. I even considered a heavily discounted Playbook (~€170) but that's just too far out of the park in terms of OS, support, etc.
I can get a Xoom II (16 GB, WiFi) for about €280, but thats at the upper end of my target budget. I can get a Xoom (32 GB WiFi) (B-stock, new but damaged/opened packaging) for €200, and that has my attention. But I'm worried about the processor speed and the display. I could also get a new Xoom II ME (16 GB, WiFi) for about the same price, €200. Apart from the newer specs (a faster processor and better screen), the 8.2 inch format strikes me as possibly more portable (for use while commuting). WiFi only is also fine for me as when I'm not in a normal WiFi area I'll use my Xperia S as a hotspot.
So, given my budget limitations and the fact that it's probably for light browsing/reading use (some videos while on holidays perhaps), would the Xoom II ME or the older Xoom be the best bet? Is the new screen a worthwhile upgrade? Thoughts please?
-----------------------
Update: Having read a bit more about portability and useability of the various sizes (7, 8 and 10) I'm leaning towards the Xoom 2 ME.

Actually there are quite a few new screen prtectors that dont degrade the quality that allow you to still see your xoom in the sunlight

Well, I finally plumped for the Xoom 2 ME. 8.2 inch screen, price (€200 vs €250) and mini HDMI clinched it over the Nexus 7, plus I really think that I don't need Quad Core nor will I do for a few years yet. Portability beat the Xoom or Xoom 2.
Only qualm is that I ordered it from Expansys as they had the best price (by about €25). For a mainstream seller it has far more negative reviews than it should have (they should really take their Facebook page offline). I did order via Amazon rather than directly, perhaps that adds a little more security to the order.
Hopefully I'll be one of the 89% positive buyers. :fingers-crossed:
Well, whatever Expansys is doing wrong for some, it was a pretty efficient transaction for me. Ordered it from Expansys via Amazon on Monday night and it was delivered (via a forwarding company from a UK address) by Wednesday night! Picked it up this morning.
I've only played with it a little and charged it up. Will do the ICS update when I get home as the work wifi is acting up. I was able to tether it to my Xperia S and so far it's looking nice, though the web browsing seemed a little jerky/laggy. Maybe ICS will improve that.
I have since noticed that my Xperia S actually has a faster CPU, more storage, a higher ppi, a better camera and will likely get Jelly Bean later in Q1. If only it had an 8 inch screen
Just finished reading the Spec's on this thing and it looks like the perfect tablet I've been waiting for. I wish Samsung would pick up their skirt and get dirty on the galaxy tabs but until they do I'm seriously considering picking up this guy. I've been on an iPad 2 and need to get away from the apple ecosystem.
What are your impressions on this tablet and do you think there will be community support for it. I don't want something I can't root.

What specs? Other than resolution I haven't seen much.
I'm glad to see more 4x3 android tablets and am strongly considering the Slate 8 pro. I really don't like 16x10 for a tablet.
looks like you can buy one now. $329 isnt too bad, but it only has 1gb of ram. previews mentioned it would have 2gb i think

Yeah what we're they thinking with 1 gig?
my guess is it was to keep the price down. something tells me they'll probably have a slate 10 pro eventually. maybe they'll put 2gb in that one instead
Anyone buy this bad boy yet? It's available at B&h and now online at Best Buy too.
Does it come with multi-year out of the box?
I picked up the Acer Iconia A1 810 at Staples for $99 and I love the 4x3 ratio. It makes me think I need to buy the Slate 8 pro as a faster, higher resolution replacement.
I'm a bit worried about the 1 gig though, particularly since I want multi-user. What does android do when it's out of ram? Kill apps? Pop up errors?
Been keeping a keen eye on this one too since its announcement - pretty much the same reason as all the above posts.
15% off from the UK's HP website for Cyber Monday (today) was just enough incentive for me to hit the "buy" button... its still £237 after the discount - ouch!! >_<
I'll report back once it arrives if any one is interested?

I picked up a slate 8 pro and it seems they still have some bugs to work out.
1) I setup two users but Android hangs when I try to switch users.
2) I can't seem to type quickly without dropping a significant number of characters. At first I thought it was my mistakes but it happens far more than on my other tablets (Note 8 and Acer Iconia A1). It might be a periodic screen freeze issue? All I know it's that I can't type quickly and accurately at all. Blocks of characters end up missing.
3) It makes weird clicking noises. I believe it's the camera lens. I don't know if it's adjusting to light or what but it's super annoying.
I was hoping the Slate 8 pro would combine the pros of my two tablets: the 4x3 aspect ratio of the Acer and the higher screen quality of the Note 8. But at this point either of the other tablets is more pleasant to use. Hrmph.
I have until Jan 15th to return it to best buy. Maybe they'll have a fix worked out by then.
Another disappointment is that the scrolling in apps like Facebook is still choppy. I was hoping some new hardware and a better GPU would make it liquid smooth. Not even close. I guess it's Android or the app itself that sucks.
The volume rocker is a bad design and is quite inconvenient to use I could live with this though.
But fast typing is impossible. If this isn't fixed it's unusable.
EDIT: it looks like the typing was related to swiftkey. I'm not having the problem with thumb-keyboard.
My first post!
Hello all,
I currently own an asus tf300 tablet, which I bought last year in 2012. Now that I am a supporter of nvidia, I decided to buy a HP Slate 8 Pro for my sister as a xmas present because of the specs and tegra 4 of course.
I highly doubt she'll do a review, but hopefully (after she opens it) I can play around with it and share my impressions on it. I look forward to what you all think of the HP Slate 8 Pro!

I'm curious about the display - not the resolution, but the brightness.
I picked up one of the Gpad 8.3 tablets, and it was a terrible device for me because the screen was too dim to use outdoors. I saw a review in Laptop that pegged the gpad in the 275 or so lux range, where the Nexus 2013 and the Note 8 are both close to 500 lux.
If you dial the HP up to max brightness and hold it alongside the Note 8 at max brightness, how do they compare? I'm pretty interested in the HP, except that I haven't seen any discussion of how bright the screen really is.
Thanks!
