[Q] Giving a GT 10.1 for a Xoom? - Xoom Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello all,
I'm actually considering to give my new Galaxy Tab 10.1 for a Xoom because
of the recent newton ring issue on the screen.
The xoom seems pretty THICK and the display not so good if compared to
the 10.1. But this issue is starting to drive me crazy.
Any suggestion, consideration, opinion?
Regards,
Daemon

"Hey this samsung sucks and has a crappy screen, someone want to trade their flawless xoom for it?"
Let me know how that works out for you

It sounds pretty bad to me but I think there is a misunderstanding:
I'm not trading it, I'm returning it to the shop.
I'm here to ask for conscious comparisons, considerations, concerns between the 2 devices.
It seems so thick and heavy compared to the galaxy tab, and the screen...
I dunno...asking for a substitution, for a change with xoom or another device or for a refund?
Heeeeelp!

The xooms screen is superior to the gtab 10.1 qhd is higher Res then there amoled crap.
Xooms are thick and heavy, I chose it as the tablet for me for that its sturdy. The galaxy tab 10.1 and icrap 2 seemed light and fragile

I compared the galaxy tab 10.1 to the xoom display and, frankly speaking, xoom display is far less bright and brilliant than the SGT 10.1 in my opinion.
I really can't find what else I should bet on.

That is true, but the qhd has a superior resolution.

I don't know what you're talking about. Probably the info you have are wrong, because they've both 1280x800, and both are 10.1"...
And the Tab isn't amoled but EPS for high brightness and contrast.

Sigh... the dangers of buzz words. We can all thank apple for their marketing use of "retina display", which led Android manufacturers to using terms like "qHD", etc.
qHD is in reference to phone screen resolutions; there is no "word", as far as I know, for the resolutions found on Honeycomb devices like the Tab 10.1 and the Xoom.
Concerning the Xoom and the Tab 10.1, they have the same resolution; although, as the OP has stated, the Tab's screen, in the opinion of many reviewers and users, seems to be more brilliant and good-looking compared to the Xoom's screen. Motorola is no Samsung when it comes to screen technology, so this shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone.
To the OP: I would weigh which is more important to you immediately and long-term. In the long-term, the Tab 10.1 will be the best device, given that it will, eventually, have pretty much the same software as the Xoom. Given the Tab 10.1's superior hardware, it will probably be the better device. As for right now, the Xoom is getting the 3.2 upgrade starting today, with no word on when other devices will get the 3.2 update (although there was no real announcement about the Xoom US Wi-Fi getting 3.2 today... so we could see a universal 3.2 rollout happening across all Honeycomb devices within a few weeks). In the world of Android, updates are no guarantee, however, with a device like the Tab 10.1, you should be good with updates for at LEAST another 12 months... if not more.
If I were you, I would decide what's more important to you rght now: hardware or software. With Samsung, overall, you'll get a better screen and a much thinner and less cumbersome package. With the Xoom, you'll get faster software updates. It's up to you, though, in the end. Happy choosing!

I'm also a tab 10.1 owner considering to grab a Motorola xoom my reasons:
Price. The xoom just dropped to $499.
Storage. xoom 32gb vs tab 10.1 16gb.
Extra ports at no additional cost.
Updates! the xoom will get them first so at least it will get to see ICS. Samsung has been nasty with their updates I'm yet to GB on my galaxy S. I'm running 2.3.4 on my Atrix 4g.
The only cons I could find on the xoom would be weight and screen quality, I dont care about the weight since I have to buy adapters for my tab and that for sure will add more weight to it.
I still have 12 days left on my return policy. I'm still researching pros and cons I still need to find out how the battery life on the xoom compares to the tab 10.1 but I'm 80% sure the tab 10.1 will be going back pretty xoom. lol

It does seem there are two models of XOOMs floating around with different screens. Mine is fantastic, I guess I got lucky and got the good screen.
Battery life is great. I unplug it at 6:30am, do light to moderate use with email, some browsing, words with friends, Pandora, process some payments with Square, use IP Cam viewer a few times a day to see who is at the front door. I will plug it in at night with 30-40% charge left.
On a recent cross country flight, I used it for a few hours on the first leg, and hour during the layover, and five more hours on the second leg, 40 minutes to the hotel (10 hours of travel) and then two hours of email/browsing and had 30% left.

I really don't know what's with the crappy screen thing. Look, I'm a painter, and color is very important to me as I use the Xoom as my travelling portfolio.
I want my colors true to life. Oversaturated color is pleasing...I play with it...but it would not show my photos properly. The Xoom (mine at least) has nice, true colors, even at +/- 60% brightness.
Also, it's not heavy when you get used to it...feels sturdy...like a tank.

xoom vs galaxy tab 10.1

since the tab 10.1 has been released has anyone had a chance to play around with both of them? I'm liking the xoom mainly for the development that has already happened for it. Anyone have any likes or dislikes for the xoom or tab 10.1?
I own a xoom and am opinionated I guess but I have been a Moto guy for a long time just because their hardware is pretty much unbeatable. I will admit there are a few flaws with the xoom but overall it is built like a tank. I prefer a hefty device, not that the Xoom is extremely heavy but to me weight = solid build quality. I hate plasticky Samsung devices because they are flimsy and do not stand up to my lifestyle. Plus I feel they are all but copying crapple(no external storage option). Just look at almost all the Galaxy devices. Sammy's touchwiz blows IMO and from my understanding it is going to be incorporated onto the non I/O tabs.
My. 02¢
If you want a stock Honeycomb experience with timely updates and a solid device then go with the Xoom, if you like light and plastic doesn't bother you along with waiting for updates them the SGT 10.1 maybe for you.
i had a chance to see and touch the Samsung 10.1 and even though I own the xoom I feel its nice. I have several concerns though. First the plastic quality like Brenardo said and the fact that the memory is limited. Trying to copy I pad. Other than that they are both virtually alike. It comes down to preference.
I work for a Bravo TV show and we currently Have a Galaxy 10.1 in our office. I played with it for a bit, and was not impressed.
Pros
Its very thin, light as a feather, and pretty looking.
Cons
There are no inputs besides the 3,5 headphone jack and 30 pin connector.
The power and volume buttons are on the top on the device when holding in landscape. A lot of people complain about the Xoom's button placement, but I found taking one hand out the device or having to turn it to the side to access thouse buttons extremely awkward.
Also there was a little gap in between the bezel and where ever it connects with the back of the device.
I have both and the Tab has a longer battery life. About 10-11 hours, while the xoom is more like 8.5 to 9 hours.
Xoom will get updates faster.

"What's more, Samsung's also promising to deliver a number of new features in a "future software upgrade," including the TouchWiz UX that was originally intended to be included on the tablet, and Samsung's Media Hub, which promises "easier downloads of rented or purchased content"
I guess the main thing I'm considered about is the lack of an unlocked bootloaderon the galaxy tab. I'm going to look at them at bestbuy this weekend tho so maybe that will help my decision

Not for me.
is it just me thinking this "bigger screen" thing is becoming a bit out of hand? Having choices is good, of course, but this is hardly "phone size" anymore. If i wanted a tablet, i'd get one...
Choice is good, as you say. I'm well keen for this one, the size is a positive for me!
It's tempting, much more than the Galaxy Nexus I would say.
Of course the size is up to your needs, I'm not quite sure myself, but it has the external SD slot, gorgeous high def screen, strong 2500mAh battery, CPU seems better too (not sure about the GPU part?) and you can use a pen.
People who like PDA will love this, that's still smaller than my wallet I put in my jacket pocket every day.

Yes, just read it's Mali-400 similar to the SGS2.
So that's better than Nexus but not as fast as iphone 4s.

Thanks for the info (even though it's possibly bad news). The "built-in" stylus and the massive screen on the Galaxy Note are both very tempting features. The pentile display might turn out be a bit of a deal braker, though. As I mostly use my phone for looking up medical reference (which basically means filtering out relevant information from a wall of text), I would like my next phone to have a truly razor-sharp, as well as sizable display. I find it easier to read on the iphone 4 screen than I do on the SGS, and I suspect the SGS' pentile display is to blame.
As things stand right now, I suppose the Moto Droid RAZR might be the best alternative, even though I would like a screen closer to 5 inches.
edit: As things stand right now, I just ran out of alternatives (Droid RAZR being supposedly being pentile after all). Guess I'll have to wait for SGS3 or the like...

2011 is nearly at is end, so I'm gonna say in now. Xoom was the best tablet of 2011

I know that's just like my opinion and stuff, most tech blogswill vote for 10.1tab or ipadpon 2 but we know which tab was the greatest of 2011 without a doubt. First honeycomb, first everything.
I own a Galaxy SII and a Xoom (MZ605, 3G + Wi-fi). I am extremely happy with my SGS2 and very disappointed with the Xoom.
The Galaxy is a much better android device than the Zoom. I know we're comparing onions to potatoes here, but if the Galaxy S II is any indication of what the Galaxy Tab is, then I regret immensely to have bought the Xoom instead of the Galaxy Tab 10.1.
The sgsII is imo the best phone out right now. Lack of sd card and plasticy back make the tab ten.one less desirable for me than xoom. It's just that the xoom came out way before the tab so I was basing my opinion on the fact that we have had much more experience with the honeycomb ui than most tab owners. Either way both tablets provided the best android experience available in 2011 and can't wait to see what next year brings.
I love my Xoom... to me it has been the best of the bunch in overall comparison for 2011, and it still has plenty of life in it. I would love my next tab to be a Xoom as well, but the new ones don't impress me.
I have now owned 5 tabs total including the "almighty" Galaxy 10.1 and the Xoom was the only one that didnt end up on Craigslist! The only thing the Galaxy had over my Xoom was the screen colors. Not enough to justify trading up though, i love my Xoom......
I live my xoom, but its too big for most tablets. Lots of then are so much smaller really thinner. I don't understand why this thing is so thick? But it does gave an sd card slot and that makes a huge difference to me, but the screens also kinds sucks!

I prefer the thick, heavy metal feel of the Xoom. I pick up other tablets and most feel like toys, don't really give something solid to hold on to. With all the features and the tank-like build I am sold. Coming from a Tegra phone it is also cool to see how cool the Xoom runs while under a heavy overclocked load. Just a real nice platform.
Some like their Phantoms, some like their Miatas. I'll keep my Rolls Royce!
The Xoom was the best to me because of speaker placement. When shopping for tablets I found the Xoom to have the best sound...bar none.

That`s exactly why I chose the Xoom over the GTab 10.1. I like the fact that I can simply upgrade my uSD card rather than have a device whose storage can't be upgraded.
I already bought a Class 10, 32Gb uSD card from DealExtreme.

I think the next xoom after the xoom2 will be really impressive. Probably sometime in April/may one year after most of us have had our of xoom they will come out with quad core,2560 x 1600 screen, 2gb ram, my wish list could go on but I mean tablets are so new that motorola should be able to get their act together and bring us another groundbreaking tablet like the og xoom.

I don't like the speakers on the back because when I try to listen to something by myself the sound shoots behind the tablet into other rooms, I would have liked front facing.
If you place something behind it or cup your hands around the speakers... even in a case, it sounds like surround sound.
I have an Sg2 phone....the best by far in my opinion. I also have a Xoom tablet which I also think is the best. The specs on the Galaxy tab fell short because of the lack of SD card. My other beef about android in general is the latency factor....as I understand it about 100ms v 10ish on an ipad. It's almost (though not quite) enough to make me go for an ipad

I'd say best Android tablet of the year for sure. In spite of "not being an iPad killer", 4G/SD debacle, there was very little trade-off with the Xoom. Might be a little thick and heavy, but with the OTG cable, SD slot after root, direct HDMI out, 32GB base storage, and typically the quickest OS updates I don't see how this wasn't the ultimate Android tablet this year. GED. Year end promise of ICS.
Samsung had some "wow" factor with it's thin sleek device, and it probably got more consumers considering Android than the Xoom. But there's more trade-offs with no expansion, no built in HDMI, multiple dongles. I agree with the less solid feeling on that tablet too. I always give phones and tablets a good bend test and the Samsung did not pass.

Galaxy 8.9 - Discontinued?

I have heard from a lot of sources (many corporate) that the Samsung Galaxy 8.9 will not be continued by Sammy any further. They are focusing on 7" and 10.1" size in the US looking at the mediocre sales 8.9". Due to this reason the next generation of Galaxy tablets i.e., Tab 2 is strictly 10.1" and 7".
The Galaxy 8.9 32GB has already been deleted from many retailers' system after it was all sold. And 16GB continues till the stock depletes.
So if you are interested in Galaxy 8.9, time is running out. FYI!

I got on the 8.9 wagon myself, and am pretty disappointed I did. I think my best option would have been to hold out for the Sammy Note, and go with a 10.1" otherwise. The 8.9 has little support and it isn't nearly as useful IMO. It's like the awkward duckling.
Ah well, we live and we learn.

Which is too bad... because 8.9 is kind of the sweet spot. Just the right size.
I love my 8.9. I had the 10.1 but found it too big, tried out the HTC flyer 7 inch but it was too small IMO. I use my 8.9 everyday and can honestly say that it's perfect for what I want it to do. My laptop hardly ever gets turned on anymore!.

I'm glad I got it.
I wonder how much more successful the 8.9 would have been if it had a SD Slot?
How disappointing. I originally bought the samsung galaxy tab 7 +. It was too small and also didn't have that great developmental support. The samsung galaxy tab 8.9 is perfect for me. The quality fit and finish also feels much better on the 8.9. The only thing that I felt that it was lacking was a micro sd card slot. I'm just glad that I bought one before they are discontinued.

SD slot, better screen, faster software and maybe 100$ less than the 10" then it would have been a hit. Even with these problems I found it much more comfortable than other tablets. The size is really perfect and if you look at it maybe it's because it's closer to the one of the ipad or a medium size book.
Plus the GPS is a killer, that thing locks on satellites like nothing I have ever seen, it beats an Asus Transformer (not the prime)!!!
I think this tablet is massively under rated, it is a perfect size. It's replaced my netbook when I go to university. It's small and practical at the same time.
Sent from my Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 using Tapatalk
The mediocre sales were due to limited outlets carrying the 8.9. As far as I know, it was limited to Best Buy for the longest time. Dumbest move ever. It really is the sweet spot tablet size wise. An SD slot would have made it killer.
Another vote for the 8.9!
I've been through the 10.1, 7.0 and this 8.9, and no doubt this is the best. -size and weight, portability and usabilty are superior! If sales were low, its mainly cause most people don't even know let alone have tried it.
I was a bit dissapointed there was no mention of galaxy tab 2 8.9, but the tab 2 series are minor refreshes so I am hoping an overhaul later this year or next brings exynos quad super amoled plus 8.9s!

That will be awesome but I doubt it.
I got to play with the Tab 2 10.1 today in the store. Frankly I wonder how well it will do. The only improvement is microSd slot. I believe to keep the price low, Samsung decided not to go for quad processsor. They even took the flash
out from the rear camera.
Quite frankly, whoever is in charge of Galaxy product development is trying to compete on price rather than the product. That's stupid.

My guess is the Galaxy Tab line is being turned into the middle range line for the masses - galaxy tab 2 is made to compete with the popular kindle fire and ipad2.
The high end line to compete with the new iPad[3] will probably be the Galaxy Note 10.1 Sammy promised to release. I am just hoping an 8.9 comes comes out in the Note family too! (With quad exynos and s amoled + or s LCD 2 and dedicated stylus and apps!

Of course amazon.com always has stock available but they are 100$ more than the sold out stock on bestbuy.com...i was able to get my hands on a 32gb 8.9 and the size is perfect light thin...I guess the only thing really we could have used was the expandable microsd but with 32 gigs and only paying 350$ for mine last year I guess I cant complain...
So true about Amazon exploiting the fact they are few retailers left with 8.9 Galaxy. Last week it was $569.
Yeah, 8.9 is the perfect size. Terrible for it to be discontinued. Luckily our community is pretty strong, great devs doing great work so although it sucks, I'm not sweating the support loss as we support ourselves rather well. Thanks to all that contribute.

I love my 8.9. I had the 10.1 but found it too big, tried out the HTC flyer 7 inch but it was too small IMO. I use my 8.9 everyday and can honestly say that it's perfect for what I want it to do. My laptop hardly ever gets turned on anymore!.

Same here. Had most of the popular 10.1's at some point along with a dell streak 7 and Evo View. The 8.9 is the perfect size to always carry. I toss the keyboard dock in the work bag and my Dell 11z has found a home in my car and hasn't left in ages. It's the 800 res in the 8.9" form factor that does the trick for me. Hope that opens the door for another mfg to step in with that size and maybe add a little connectivity without the dongles.
Maybe if they melded it with the features of the 7.7 it would have a better following.
I have to agree that the 8.9 is the perfect size!
Please keep the 8.9 alive Samsung!
I don't really mind the trends, and i think are some stupid opium for the masses.
but it really get on my nerves when affect the usability of the products.
also when someone have a real oportunity to make somenthing unique and instead just copycat the market leader
lets see tablets
7" too small to read / 10" too big to use with one hand..
10000 variants of a 7"inch
10000 variants of a 10"inch
and samsung stop using the 8.9" factor !!
let see phones
10000000000000000 phones one more similar to the other
but no one seems to do something different like
HARDWARE KEYBOARD?
but is not all lost, everything is always back
is nice at least Samsung going back to the stylus,
rather than following an stupid moron that want me to use my fingers for everything. Hey im not in kindergardeen.
humans find out that they can do somenthingh else than painting with the fingers somethngh like 35.000 years ago

[Q] what's ur opinion?

Do u think it is worth to buy the new edition of note 10.1
Or u just satisfied from ur currently one
For me i will buy the new one soon for just the screen resolution i hate the old note 10.1's screen
Not worth it to me.. I'll stay with this one and just get a smaller tablet.. maybe the new nexus 7.. I will be able to get all the newest updates..

I most likely will be getting one. I just hate where they placed the speakers on the new one.

I think I'll hold out for the Note 12.
I like the upgraded screen but unless they come out with some awesome accessories or a killer price especially on a 64gb model there's really not enough to make me want to ditch my Note 8013 for the 2014 with side fire speakers, fake leather back, shinny chrome bezel and a mechanical home button.
.
Something about upgrading a tablet every year doesn't feel right for me for whatever reason. The only thing I really envy that's in the new Note 10.1 is the screen.
- Speaker placement is strange and imho a loss, but better the side than the back.
- Higher res screen is much needed and definitely a win. With the SD800 power consumption specs and low power high res screen and lighter but more powerful battery you should actually gain battery time.
- No Transformer like dock is a shame but there are plenty of keyboards for a tab and most likely a samsung approved dock as well just like the first model
- It may be to early to call NFC yet as the tech bloggers dont always do the best at reporting features but if it does not have it im sad as NFC has potential to solve some annoying bluetooth problems.
- Physical home button and soft back and recent buttons can be looked at as a win as it provides more screen room.
- The new SOC has enough power to run the new higher resolution screen and still give a tremendous boost over the previous version
- The new 2014 model provides close to double the power of the previous version and gives options that we have never seen before. Overall imho the tablet is pure success with a few bad ideas. If this tablet doesn't do it for you...nothing coming this year will.
So yea I think it's more than worthy of an upgrade. All that said though I'm still deciding if I will go note 10.1 2014 or transformer pad tf701. Both are phenomenal on paper, with the note coming in a bit more powerful imho but I'm just so darned attracted to the dock on transformer lol.
What does everyone think about the nexus 10 2? I didn't even know one was coming out until I looked in the nexus forums lol. Price is said to be$299.

It's a buy for me. I am selling both my Nexus 10 and Note 10.1 and replacing with the 2014 model.

I'm more then likely in since im currently selling my Note tablet on eBay.
My main motivation is the upgraded screen resolution, but I'm waiting for reviews and battery life stats first.
Until then I have my Nexus 2013 and Note 2 to keep me distracted from the world.
I don't have the urge to get it. I just got this one about 2 weeks ago.

And one more thing
I think its hard to get softwares upgrades from the new one as air command and the other stuff
And if the developers developed it and got it from the custom roms we will face alot of errors because the 2014 differ from the old one in hardware
Such as the buttons and i think the s pen also

It's a nice and fair summary. Whatever the the shortcoming(s) of the new one might be, I'm sure the new screen resolution and the increased functionality of the S-Pen will make all that go away after a few days of use. When I first compared a Nexus 10 and a Note 10.1 side by side in a store, my first thought was "why can't we have this gorgeous screen with an S-Pen?". Now, we have it!
I don't know why people compare the two, the note imp is in a class of its own especially for people that that full advantage of the spen

I wont be getting my next tablet until i see features that really impress me, plus some features of our notes or improved such as multi window, battery, performance etc etc
Plus, its gotta be in the market a bit to confirm that the tablet "does what it says on the tin".......in the end, im quite satified with my tab for now.......but will always be looking none the less
if asus gives us the TF701 with an S-pen and multitasking, samsung will literally have no chance.
as of right now, the dock is what's saving the transformers. people just loveeeeee their docks.
