NOTICE
The method described is now obsolete.
Thread closed.
The only suggestion I would have is to make ClockWorkMod compatible directly with ASUS ROMs (previous and new format: patches + BLOB), as the previous idea is both inadequate or extremely inefficient.
Original first post:
Hi fellow Transformer adopters
After writing an Asus firmwares repacking tool for personal/dev usage, I repacked some official Asus ROMs in ClockWorkMod recovery update.zip formats.
Uploaded here on my server:
http://dl.project-voodoo.org/transformer-roms/
Those are unmodified but rooting is automatically applied in the flashing process without requiring manual intervention.
What's flashed:
- Everything (Kernel, system, additional stuff)...
- except of course the recovery, this way you keep your previously installed custom recovery.
What's needed:
- Only requirement: any custom recovery capable of flashing unsigned standard update.zips, like this one
- As long as the custom recovery is here, there is no prior-rooting requirement.
Requests to repack missing ROMS are welcome if accompanied by download links.
Happy flashing ^^
Hi, I'm new to Asus Transformer, but these are 3.0 ROMS? Do you have 3.1?
And am I correct in saying, that if I flash old 3.0, I can then get clockwork mod on there, and then flash one of these to get a stock ROM but rooted? (I'm guessing I would need SuperUser.APK to install).

repacked-8.4.4.5_US+root-CWR-update.zip is a 3.1 ROM.
May I rename the files for faster recognition?
And yep that's the idea. Once you get the custom recovery, you can flash any ROM this way.
The lack of proper flashing tool is really annoying but those ROMs are here to make the whole rooting+flashing process a bit easier in the end for most people.
i'm slightly confused by what this does.
i see that these are stock roms with root, however does that mean that, if you are on pure stock 3.1 and you flash your rooted 3.1 rom over it. we then get a 3.1 rooted rom without wiping everything?
or is it a case of it will root the rom but wipe everything? or will it just not flash over a stock 3.1 rom?
thanks for all the help!
I would like to understand this more too. I want to root my 3.1 install and add custom recovery. Well the recovery first then root!
As long as the custom recovery is here, there is no prior-rooting requirement.

How does one install CWM without prior root?
Putting on CWM and then flashing a prerooted room seems like a very easy way to get root if there is a way to just install the CWM apk.

That's what I'd like to know. I'm on 3.1 now, and I understand how to downgrade, root, install CWM and re-upgrade, but that's a lot of effort if this really requires no previous root.
I believe these packages make it easier for you to go from rooted 8.x.y.z to rooted 8.x.z.z, without having to worry about CWM getting overwritten. It doesn't help you root.

You have to be rooted previously.
What you're waiting for is someone to release the SBK, so we can use NVflash.

So I'm running 3.1 and dont want to downgrade to root and I have heaps of stuff on my tf,dies these mean 3.1 Rom is rooted ?
LEEDROID GB3.0.1DESIRE HD using XDA PREMIUM
I have a quick question:
I downgraded from 3.1 to 3.0, rooted, and installed CWM. When I rebooted I was rooted with the superuser app. I then installed the repacked 8.4.4.5 rom linked in the first post and rebooted. After the reboot, I no longer have the superuser app. How can I tell if I'm still rooted?
**EDIT**
I confirmed the ROM linked above for 8.4.4.5 is indeed rooted. I was trying to use titanium backup but it kept failing to gain superuser permissions. You'll need to manually install superuser (and busy box) from the market after flashing this rom.

There are rooted 3.1 roms avaiable yes. To use them you need custom recovery which can only be
install if you're rooted. So you have to downgrade first to gain root then upgrade bck to 3.1 rooted rom.

Any chance of a WW 3.1 ? Then i'm gonna give it a go.....

I don't honestly know. I just searched for superuser app in the market and downloaded and installed it normally. After you install it, you actually have to open the SU app first in order for Titanium Backup to work. Here's the app I installed:
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.noshufou.android.su
This is the version that came installed in all the roms I've ever used on my Captivate, so I figured I'd give it a try. It worked for me!
Before installing SU, Titanium Backup was unable to gain superuser permissions. Everything I've mentioned is what I've done after installing your repackaged stock rom for 3.1 and nothing else.
Oh that's right, I don't install Superuser apk correctly, I'll fix that.
So far the most important is that su binary is there already, this is the hard part
Does that mean you're going to repackage the repackaged firmware?
If so, would you recommend I reflash your new version over your previous version?

No need to reinstall anything though, you can have the exact same by installing Superuser from market like you di
I want to root my 2.3.6 i9023 but I am not 100% sure of what the repercussions of this will be, can someone please confirm:
-As per the tutorial for i9023, I must unlock the bootloader which will wipe all my apps and SD card data?
-Is there a way to root without installing CWM? I really just want root access on the stock ROM and at this moment in time, don't need CWM.
--EG: Can I unlock the bootloader and then reboot into the stock ROM and install Superuser from the Market?
-When I unlock the bootloader, does that wipe the stock ROM off the phone as well or is it just the data?
-Once rooted, I will no longer get OTA notifications of updates, but I can install manually the official update package?
--Once the stock ROM is rooted, can I still use the Nexus stock recovery to flash official ROM updates or will I need CWM?
I have rooted a phone before and I know what I'm doing with custom ROMs but the Nexus S seems to have different procedures.
Cheers!
Yes. You have to unroot so that OTA update can be installed.
Go to "Nexus S General" and find section "All OTA ROMs".

Yes, you can root without actually installing CWM. You can use the command fastboot boot recovery.img to temporarily boot into CWM instead of fastboot flash recovery recovery.img that will replace the stock recovery with CWM.

No, the su binary needs to be installed as system app. So it's easiest to flash it via CWM.

The official full OTA can be flashed via either stock or CWM recovery.
Thanks for that comprehensive reply
While researching, I have since found this which is confirmed working with the i9023 on 2.3.6. What I'm wondering is, how does it root without wiping all your data (it doesn't appear to unlock the bootloader)
Finally, if I have rooted stock 2.3.6 with the stock recovery, I will have to unroot (using this method I presume) and then I can flash the OTA ICS update whenever it comes through the stock recovery, correct?

I guess the script uses an exploit in the firmware to temporarily gain root access and copy the necessary files into the system partition.

You can just flash the full OTA. The phone will be unrooted and recovery will be reverted back to stock.

Is it possible to get my hands on a stock 8.6.5.21 after trying to root with Razorclaw? This root involved using a 8.6.6.19 fw, but not it's slow as... :S
I'd rather not lose my data, if possible.

Hey if your ClockworkMod is working fine then download the 8.6.5.21 from the main Asus website nd put it on your external sd and go into clockwork recovery then go into install zip and install it
Thanks! Now I need to install clockworkmod
I had a similiar question, are the updates available from the ASUS website full ROM's or incrimental updates to the prevoiusly released FOTA versions?
Can they all be flashed via CWM to over-write an existing ROM? Regardless of the current version of the firmware on the phone(assuming a data/cache wipe to be safe)?
Do they overwrite the recovery partition or do you need a copy of the asus recovery to flash back to stock recovery?

The ASUS website ROM's are full ROM's. You can flash the stock ROM with the clockworkmod, however you won't be able to update unless you flash back to stock Clockwork. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1154947 click that link to download the stock clockwork.

I received notice this morning that a firmware update was ready to install. I chose to install it and the tablet rebooted and start to apply the update. However, it gets to 32% on the update install, stalls, and then reboots and does the exact same thing.
Any thoughts on a solution?

i have the same problm :crying:
Need more info than that.
For example... Are you rooted or stock?
If rooted, there are a couple of reasons off hand I can think of you could be having a problem.
If you're stock, well... All I can think of is wave your hands in the air, and wave them like you just don't care. Pretty sure that won't fix the problem though, but if it does, report back! xD

I have the exact same problem.
GT-N8013, rooted, stock rom with root injected.
I called Samsung tech service and they said I should send my device to them.
The only way I can get out of this "update->reboot->update->reboot->..." infinite loop is to get into ODIN mode. (I can't turn off the device)
I decided to re-flash my rom (stock rom with root injected) in ODIN mode, but it does not have any effect and the device is still on this infinite loop. I'm worried if I messed up the device even more by doing that.

if you've never flash CWM, that means you never backed up via CWM, which means you can't restore to a back up. You have to use ODIN and flash a stock firmware on your note to recover it
Yes I'm trying to find a stock firmware for N8013 (UEALGB) but no luck. There is only "root injected" stock firmware, which is causing the problem right now...
Has anyone resolved this problem?

I have a N8013 and was running the stock, root injected firmware (UEALGB). Today I got the update notification. I tried to install and it kept looping. This is what I did:
1. Flashed the stock firmware with ODIN. You'll find the stock firmware here:

2. When my tab rebooted, I got another update notification. I installed it and it worked. I'm now running UEALI3.
I didn't lose any data. I just lost root.
This worked for me as well. Thanks a lot, Vincent9756!:good:

Flash the recovery version for your firmware. If you have stock, flash the GB recovery. If you have LH2, flash that.
If you want to save root, use OTA RootKeeper before doing anything.

Yeah, there will most certainly be kernel and recovery uploads.
the only issue you might run into is CWM not sticking. If it doesn't reflash CWM in ODIN with reboot unchecked. Then after you flash it, boot into CWM. When you select reboot, it should offer to prevent stock recovery from replacing it.
and you're welcome, glad to help

Incorrect. Root has nothing to do with it. You will lose root after updating, but it's as simple as flashing SuperSU in your custom recovery to get it back. The reason it's failing is because you have a custom recovery, and are trying to apply the OTA from within Android. If you do that, you have to have stock recovery. If you are stock, just with root, you can flash the OTA.zip using your CWM recovery. The OTA.zip can be found in the /cache directory. I believe it reverts your custom recovery back to stock recovery, but getting it back is as easy as fastboot flashing it.
