[ICS] Nyan Colonel v5 (Atarashii) Voodoo & No Voodoo - Epic 4G Android Development

Please try shadow, samurai, and stock kernels also for a bit to see what one you like best! Don't choose a kernel because everyone else likes it or because it has a long feature list and fancy new shiny things.

This is a kernel, not a full ROM... please use AOKP, MIUI4, or CM9 with this...
Atarashii - New/Fresh - This kernel was made to revolutionize what all of the current 'normal' Epic kernels have. I have added in tweaks and mods that were never before seen on the Epic, long forgotten, and from other devices such as the Nexus S and i9000.
Hopefully (probably) most other kernel developers will implement these new features and help keep the Epic current.
I prefer that you use NSTools to overclock and undervolt and do other tweaks. It is more featured than Voltage Control and this kernel supports it better. Voltage Control works fine too but I recommend uninstalling all cpu tools you have and installing NSTools.
I am not responsible to ANYTHING that happens to you or your phone as a result of using this kernel. Most things in this are experimental to a point but have been tested and confirmed safe.
Some of these features have NEVER been used before on the Epic, so don't expect everything that you are used to. Things can and will be different than usual.

Nice Marcus!
All these new tweaks really got me curious!
I'm gna flash it and see how my phone likes it.
Pretty excited to try this kernel out

UV to save battery!
OC to make your phone snappy!

downloaded and flashed.
booting up .......
ummmm one more thing tho
how wud i set up the uv to save battery? im sorry i know its off topic but i just thought about asking this sorry,...

One of the first, flashing it now, thanks!!

Flashed and running on B31. Looking good so far Marcus. Any type of behavior we should be looking out for due to some of these "new/old" tweaks?

One of the clear changes is that the whole color scheme appears a little bluish. It's not bad, but is there a way to revert back to natural colors? Thanks!

Actually I'm liking the change in the color scheme - I was just wondering how to revert back if needed.
Another thing I noticed is that while scrolling in XDA threads it stutters. It might be just me but still wanted to point out.
As someone asked it would be really nice to know what kind of good changes we should expect from this kernel. It looks good.

MD5?

Not the worst thing in the world but for about the last 4 seconds of boot and then until my sd card has been scanned, everything has a heavy green overlay.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA

Also NSTool won't let me set battery charge to above 96%. Not sure if that is relevant to the kernel or if that is an app "feature" though.

How to overclock
Download NSTools from the market
Go to the CPU tab
Set the max frequency to what you want
Liveoc is really buggy and I need to talk to thomasskull about some RAM things to make sure I do not brick anybody. For now, do not mess with liveoc and keep it at 100%.
How to undervolt
Download Voltage Control (this is also possible via nstools)
Slide to the voltages tab
Click on a frequency
Slide the slider to change UV value and apply
Click to collapse
So we should have both nstools and vc installed and running at the same time if Iwant to oc and uv? What kind of downside to the kernel if I want to use vc for both ocing and uving? *

I just noticed that when I unlock my phone there is a green film covering the screen for a fraction of a second.
It seems my Epic can't handle 1.4 GHz speed as it hangs and restarts, so I am decreasing the clock speed. Does anyone have issues like me at 1.4?

[KERNEL] AT&T/Rogers dag .42 1.83GHzOC/UV/init.d/BFQ/BLN/FUSE/adb root/optimized

Hello Everybody!
So, this is some kernel code that I ported over from the lovely Jugs0.3 kernel and Synergy kernel for T-Mobile SGS II, applied to our fancy pants Skyrocket. The codebase has been brought nearly up to parity with codeaurora msm kernel and I have also patched out several buggeroonskis.
It's tested by myself and the awesome guys in irc.irondust.net #skyrocket, thanks fellers!
This version has OC support to 1.863GHz and 1.6v, with BFQ, UV/OC support, init.d support, BLN support, compiler optimizations, and insecure (for adb root access)
It is packaged as a CWM zip for the easy flashing.
Thanks to the awesomeness known as k0nane for hosting!

AT&T: Original Kernel/init.qcom.rc/lights.msm8660.so CWM zip
Rogers: Original Kernel/init.qcom.rc/lights.msm8660.so CWM zip
NOTE: 1.78GHz is about all I can run stable, and running with 192MHz active seems to cause SoD for me. Careful with undervolting. A few people have reported filesystem corruption resulting in force closes every bootup when volts are too low, resulting in the need to flash the original recovery.img (CWM will not fix it), and wipe data/cache to restore phone.

As it is using the same OC/UV codebase as t-mobile sgs ii, the same tools apply to adjusting OC/UV: 1,2,(guide to creating voltage control scripts)
Changelog:
0.42
- New sysfs interface allowing tweaking of voltages and frequencies beyond CPU: L2 Frequency, sys_vdd, vdd_dig, vdd_mem, L2 <---> CPU frequency mapping
0.41
- Fixed a crash with video playback in 0.4
0.4
- Merge to codeaurora msm kernel, bringing in a few months worth of patches
- Multiple optimizations to audio/video encoding/decoding path
- Fixed CPU1 locking at lower speeds
- AAC Multi-Channel/Dual-Mono audio decoding support
- Added lower 3D GPU step for power saving on less demanding 3d apps
- Multiple power saving features
- Tons of debug code removed
- Compressed with xz for a smaller kernel
- Reduced latency for CPU1 hotplug for faster bringup/shutdown
- Scheduling improvements, ARM SMP Ticketing
0.3
- re-built from rogers source, with OC/UV code from romanbb/faux123/mr.x
- ondemand, interactive, userspace, performance, conservative, lagfree, smartassV2 governors
- Deeper sleep state enabled and lowest stepping reduced to 54MHz - should improve battery life vs. stock kernel (may be offset by GPU OC)
- 25mV undervolt across the board
- bus speeds/volts reduced slightly for stability
- GPU overclock 30mhz on 3d core and 10mhz on 2d core
- Autoscheduling implemented
- 1.83GHz step currently not working, seems to be related to GPU overclock and over-current protection. Setting 1.83GHz step causes weirdness like one core locking to 900mhz while the other core reports 1.83 and is really running 1.78. Stick to 1.78 max for now.
- USB OTG support is enabled - I have no devices/cables to test this functionality, please report!
0.2
Merged in some parts of Synergy kernel
Set to no OC/UV by default, use System Tuner or similar to apply OC/UV
BFQ Scheduler
lagfree/ondemand[X]/interactive[X]/performance/smartassV2 governors (default ondemand)
384mhz minimum by default (192 may cause problems)
BLN (use bln control app from market to activate and control)
Shut down issue fixed
Bootanimation reverted to samsung for the mo (weirdness with /system/bin/bootanimation?)
0.1
First Release, based on romanbb's jugs kernel

Just installed the kernel.
Booted up.
Waited a couple minutes.
Then kicked off AnTuTu.
About ten seconds later, the phone rebooted.
It's cycling.
Rebooting over and over.
Gets to the lock screen and a few seconds later it reboots.
Over and over. lol
Only other mod is the T-Mobile BeastMod ROM using r34p3rex's method for running TMO ROM's on the Skyrocket.
I'm guessing this kernel is conflicting with that somehow.

Did you install something to change the clock? It does not like 1.8ghz, clock it down to 1.78/1.72 and try again.
Though it may not like the Tmobile stuff too, not sure.

I was getting that last night too. Although I can't seem to get it to happen right now, everything looks perfect. I did reflash the kernel again this morning, not sure if that made a difference. But the green tint is usually related to Voodoo Color due to the screen brightness and too low of gamma values. Keep an eye on it and see if it continues to happen under different surrounding light conditions. (i'm in a much brighter room right now than i was in last night)
Awesome.. So many people are moving on from old devices.. but the EPIC devs seem to stay.. Thanks Guys

ive also noticed on some kernels the weird tint effects will come with low battery and go away when more fully charged. and yes, it is due to low gamma usually.

[ROM][ICS]JB's CM9 (Voodoo, OC/UV Kernel, BT) - (06/29/12) - JB Test BUILD 08/13/12

Olá mundo!
Long time lurker here on XDA. This is my initial attempt on a ROM I originally built for personal use. I ended up enjoying the final product so much that I have decided to share it with the rest of you here on XDA.
Key features:
Built based on Entropy's latest build as of 06/27/12 - Thank you Entropy for your insight and words of wisdom.
OC/UV 1.6 ghz Kernel based on Entropy's/JT1134/bedwas source tree and netarchy/LinuxBozo CM7 code. Thank you Entropy, JT1134, netarchy, bedwa, and anyone else I might have missed.
A few add-ons from SGSIII leaked firmware (Launcher + Wallpaper + *more to come*) Thank you froilson for Launcher MOD.
Voodoo Sound and Screen - Thank you Supercurio, you are a true inspiration to me.
Voltage Control OC/UV - Thank you darek.xan
Work in progress:
Core base stability, specially on kernel frequency code.
Full tutorial for building both base and kernel from source on Ubuntu 12.04.
Recruit testers/helpers. Could use major assistance all around.
*Section bellow shamelessly borrowed from Entropy's original [Firmware][ICS]UNOFFICIAL CM9 post - ALL CREDIT GOES TO HIM as stated previously*
What works:
Calls
GPS
Sound
Video playback
What is not working:
TV Output - MHL
Partially working:
Camera (flash is flaky - if it's not working, change its settings in the Camera app and it may start working)
Car dock audio (possibly desk dock too, untested) - Some issues with ringtone playback when docked - This is native dock audio, not using the Car Dock Redirector app workaround. Thanks go to StevenHarperUK of the GT-I9100 community for reworking CM9's dock audio code to permit this to work.
Wifi - It frequently loses connection when the device is asleep. Most likely needs some SDHCI driver tweaks to match the N7000 wifi driver.
Wifi Direct - A little glitchy but mostly working with I777/N7000. Won't talk to a P7510 (Tab 10.1) though.
Bluetooth - A2DP (music) and SCO (call audio) now works. However BT power management (LPM) is currently disabled, so BT may eat your battery when on.
Known issues:
SetCPU seems to be unable to set the minimum frequency to 100 MHz.
Facebook contact sync has been blocked by Google in ICS - this is universal to ICS on all devices I'm aware of. Facebook got what they deserved here.

I had already done that from the beginning. All credit goes to him as I have already stated before. Without his words It would have took me months to catch to the level I am currently working on. I wish I was half the developer these guys are, honestly.

I could... or you could just extract it off the ROM yourself, but what would be the purpose of that? It will likely not work on any other CM9 based ROM unless it is based on Entropy's 05/27/12 build.
Every time one of these new ICS roms gets posted, I get super excited for a split second, thinking maybe BT has been fixed. Silly me

Hehe I like the term divorced here I made a thread to simplify things up, and separate kernel related stuff to ROM dev. related stuff. This has always been kind of a teamwork project since a ROM cannot run without a kernel and a kernel is useless without a ROM. Now that Arcee has implemented the newer V30A stuff in his repo, adampk doesn't really need my kernel anymore to test his RIL as he has everything in hand to make one himself.
Haha, that's cool, I noticed is thread jacking comment, soooo I couldn't help but use the "divorce" term. Good work nonetheless.

Mazout. I know that once its fully functional u will redo the amount of ram to be assigned to apps. I just wanted to know have u tested the rom's performance after changing those numbers yet? M asking this because I heard on p990 thread that because of less ram... they had to reduce the amount of ram for apps in order for the OS to work fluidly ... do u have any rough idea how much ram will u assign to apps and to OS? To get the same fluidity as now with some ram left for heavy apps like GTA 3 or Modern Combat 3

Well, with that info in mind, you could setup swapper2 for some app swap space memory, granted your external SD is class 8 or 10. Than we'd be able to give up app ram for sys ram, with a slightly longer app load time for memory intensive apps, such as games you mentioned. i play them too.
Since this is kernel and not rom, i was going to suggest possibly baking the app into the rom, bit here is a mute point.

This patch is already included in this build. I have about ~350mb for apps. If I want to increase this I would have to reduce the GPU allocated memory which, in this case with 3D graphics apps, might no be beneficial.
If there's too many reports of having not enough free RAM I will consider adjusting this.

... I was getting 35 MB free without any app installed or running when I tested the rom u posted with ur kernel built-in .... 350 MB is good for me .... shouldnt it be higher than 35mb if u have allocated 350 MB like 150 or something?
Edit: m also not in favour of reducing gpu ram....

I'm pretty sure they said it was an OS problem. Would have to be fixed by modifying the cyanogenmod sources. The same with the RIL

I hope this discrepency won't get Mazout360 booted off xdadevelopers, like happened to someone else, because he is probably making changes very quickly to get his work "out the door" and will document it ASAP.

Yes I had a git before (when I was doing my first betas) but it is private. I will create a github account and upload my files before the next release (that's a promise). I want to make it clean and leave dev. notes for everybody to understand what I did. My kernel source is on my ubuntu which doesn't have an internet connection so didn't have time to transfer it and upload yet.
OP updated with github link and 1,2GHz OC (kept stock voltage to reduce risk of issues with beta). Tested long enough for stability.

What is Ragingmolasses?
--------------------------------
Besides a gov with an awesome name its a mash up of conservative and ondemand and scales based on load with few tunables. Its meant to be simple, fast, and efficient at keeping the frequency away from the max clock unless it is absolutely needed. it includes gboost for better gaming.
Ragingmolasses tunables
------------------------------------
Sampling Rate - how often it checks CPU load, i keep this low around 10000-15000
up_threshold - above this it becomes ondemand governor based 100% on CPU load, below it acts like conservative and tries to keep the frequency down.
sampling_rate_min - dont worry about this
ignore_nice_load - the system will ignore "Nice" processes when deciding to scale up or down. I leave it at 0
Sorry you lost your job.. Thanks for the kernel!!

Depends on how you use the device/have it set
RM works a bit different then you might think, if you want more low/middle frequencies you set the up threshold low, to skip frequencies set it higher and it'll act more like a min/max gov.
If you want to change freq less often you set the sampling rate higher, more frequently set it low. Ignore nice load also might add some battery savings but haven't tested it.
