[q] Bad usb transfer speed? - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

OK guys i love my Nexus S, its a great phone, fast smooth etc etc.
Running CyberGR's rom (tho i noticed with every other rom i tried)... usb transfer speeds are sporadic at best. I couldnt even transfer a 500mb file to the storage when i have GB's free.
What gives. Tried both within the rom, and in recovery. Its not the cable tried multiple.
Hell i can transfer the file over wifi maxing out the wifi without issues... so it seems like its just a usb transfer problem!
Any tips etc?

I noticed the slow USB write speed too.
My Nexus S (i9023) running stock 4.0.4 had the Matr1x 18.5 kernel flashed yesterday. It actually made the transfer speed even worse. With stock kernel around 1.5 MB/s and now just around 0.7 MB/s.
I read some where that the problem is in the 3.x kernel family. I guess it makes sense, because with Android 2.3.6 (2.x kernel family) the USB transfer speed was usable.
If you need to move data to the phone fast, the boot into recovery (CWM) and mount USB storage. Going around the kernel (or whatever the problem is) you should be able to write 5-7 MB/s.

That's still an issue with 4.0.4? :S
Guess ICS isn't ready enough for me yet.

even in recovery write speed starts out alright... but then tanks like no ones business. to the point where it didnt even want to finish the 500MB file i was trying to transfer.
hmmm.
Read speeds within android are 100% fine... around 20-22MB/s
And i just transfered 150MB to the phone within android at 1.9MB/s without any issues.... but it seems like every other time when i try and do a xfer it will get halfway and the just stop all together.

try using a program called terra copy.it does the job for me.speeds the transfer alot.

thats a sad excuse for a solution IMO. on my old crappy slow LG p500 i could read and write from the sd card like no ones business never had any issues etc.
now... im lucky to be able to finish coppying the file cus the transfers are so shotty.
another interesting thing i found is that when using ADB push... to push the same file to the sd card, i got a nice consistant 4MB/s within android (obviously sd / usb storage not mounted)

no one has any tweaks etc etc.... i have tried changing the read ahead to 2048 and that changes nothing.
it looks like it is a bug with ICS at this point... blah.

Yes it looks like it.
I've tried to test the transfer speed using Ubuntu, but with no luck.
I didn't get more than 0.7 MB/s so it is not a Windows USB problem.
I haven't found any statement from Google saying they're aware of the problem.
I hope they fix it in the next ICS release (if there'll be one)

Try astro manager and download the extra modules. Its free

If you experience slow USB speed, transfer files through ADB. It will be much faster.

That's not the point here. I think the point is is that with 4.0.4, there's a bug involving usb file transfer from PC to phone. We know there are alternatives but one shouldn't have to go through all that just to transfer files.

Just got off the phone with ViewSonic about my problems and guess what, they sent me an e-mail with a URL for XDAdevelopers 3991 and 4349+ VIEWSONIC-RECALLED BOOTLOADER INFO here - UPD 5/8/11. Evev ViewSonic support thinks highly of this site.
Mine only gets to 96 so i think its normal
If u want 100 just get to 93 then disconnectit for a little bit then reconect it will pass the 93 if u get stuck above 93 just repeat
I would advise any gbread rom vegan 7 or cm7

1 and 3 - refurbished - they released 4349 than suddenly went back to 3991 , someone must of did the OTA update to have that happen I would guess. The battery thing is pretty common after some roms.

You need to read the stickied threads about ROMs first. Don't confuse yourself by reading too many diverse things.
The good news is, it's hard to brick the thing so playing around with ROMs is fairly safe.
This is what worked for me: read, read, read.

This isn't a battery problem. This is a auto-charge thingy problem. Basically, whatever the hell part that's responsible for automatically charging when the battery is full turns on prematurely.
I've found that if you see a green light and the thing is only ninety-some full, you can unhook the chord and plug in again. This will push it up more. I've been able to push it up to 100% a few times.

It says...
The unit is designed with a micro SD Card slot which allows you to insert a micro SD card into the unit as shown right. This enables you to both access media and files as well as save media and files to the gTablet. You can open and play files directly from the micro SD card (such as music), or you can copy or delete the files to and from the micro SD card. The gTablet currently supports up to 64GB micro SD cards. It is recommended that the gTablet be used with at least a 32GB micro SD card to ensure the best user experience. I'm interpreting this to mean the motherboard can handle up to 64gb of sdcard memory.

To each his own. You can double the speed of your gtab by rooting and flashing a custom rom. Or you can use the stock rom, too. It is actually not as bad as people on the internet are saying.
The reason so many people *****ed about it back in December was because they thought they were getting an ipad. When they realized it wasn't an ipad, they started *****ing about it.
In fact, I highly recommend people not to flash a custom rom until they get to know android a bit more.

I have not changed anything, it's all factory settings. The rom is TapNTap, I can't find a version #.
It is very sluggish, the battery at @32% and tapping some screens get you nothing, as a digital product it is to slow with the factory settings, don't have minutes to wait to get a news web to load, if it feels like it, some load some don't.
I got for the wife so as long as she is happy with it it's ok with me but if I was to get one I would want one much faster and user friendly.

This tablet bought late November 2011 supports up to a 32 GB card. I found a 32 GB locally at a VZW store. The office supply stores and the common large consumer retailers around here had only up to 8 or 16 GB cards. I had a smaller capacity card in here for a while; no problems. More space = more ebooks, movies, audio files. Hope that helps.

[Q] USB storage damaged

Hey guys
I just bought a new Nexus S (the GT-I9023 model) and I really love the phone. BUT, since about two weeks, I have very strange problems with the internal USB storage. When I connect it to a computer (yes, I tried on Windows and Mac OS X), I can mount the drive and copy files to it. But as soon as I try to copy larger files from my Nexus S to my computer, the USB storage disables itself and the file transfer crashes. I constantly have this bug, and I have absolutely no clue why it does this. My Nexus S is 100% stock and not rooted (I'm running 2.3.6). Is this a hardware issue? Should I try to get my phone exchanged? Is that a know bug?
I would be EXTREMELY thankful, if you could help me track down this issue...
Please define "large files".

Do you have adequate space in your storage? The next time you hook your phone up to OSX, empty the trash while the phone is connected. Sometimes the phone will show plenty of available storage but in reality all your previously deleted files are hidden somewhere waiting for you to "empty trash" in OSX.
Long shot here, but you might have a bad USB cable that makes intermittent contact, and USB disabling turning off during large file transfers is just a coincidence. My OEM cable degraded over time and I had to buy a new one.
If none of the above works, there could be some corruption in your file system. You could copy all the contents of the phone to your computer, format the storage, and copy everything that you need back.
There is one more option that happened to me, but I don't want to panic you since it doesn't sound like the same symptoms, but if you'd like to know more: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=993403&highlight=corrupt+storage
OK, all files larger than about 30MB are causing the storage to disable. Also, it's not an issue with the trash (I know what you mean, I know the .trashes folder in OSX). I also have plenty of free space.
By the way, huge thanks for the tip with the cable, it seems to have fixed the problem :O ! I actually didn't even think about an issue as simple as a broken cable... >.< At least, it seems to work fine again. The one thing I still don't get, is WHY it could copy small files from the Nexus to the computer and copy ANY file to the Nexus from the computer, but COULDN'T copy large files from the phone to my Mac....
Anyway, thank you for the simple but INSANELY useful tip!

Nothing but problems with MTP

Anyone else having nothing but problems with MTP? It's extremely slow for me and I have great difficulty transfering to the phone. It usually ends up failing and saying that the device has stopped working or been disconnected. Anyone else have any issues?
Yep, I agree...it's junk. I have not rooted yet, so I can't try the mass storage conversion, but if I have to move a ton of files I pull the card and use a reader. Not very convenient, but no failures so far.
What OS/bitlevel are you running? I have had zero problems so far on Win7x64, but have had a great many problems on XPx32.
If you're still running XP at all, I suggest you pull yourself up to this decade. It will help immensely.

I agree. Some idiot's "brilliant idea" at Google. fire them. I think I read somewhere it is for speed allegedly. Um, yeah. Well that hasn't worked out.
I hope they go back to regular USB mass storage in JB 4.1. I just want it to just work, and mount like a drive. Like I did on my old Droid. Worked, always. This MTP is crap crap CRAP.
Is the USB mass storage reliable in CyanogenMod 10? And is the reliable on stock (rooted) on VZW S III? (It works on stock TouchWiz if rooted right?)

MTP was created for the Windows Media player framework. So it was a Microsoft creation. It had nothing to do with Google. Ultimately it would have been Samsung that decided to use MTP and PTP instead of UMS.
And yes, I absolutely agree. It is crap.
MTP was put into place as a solution mainly because USB Mass Storage requires you to unmount from the phone before presenting it over USB, making everything on /sdcard unusable while the device was plugged in.
As I stated previously, if you're running on XP, MTP is still a pile of ****.
It's not perfect, but it's MUCH better on a modern OS.
Try "Myphoneexplore", it's working nicely wirelessly. I think it's the best wireless method. From your desktop you can see your contacts, call list, messages etc..and file transfer to either internal or external SD. Just make sure your pc and your phone are on the same Wifi network.
Edit: and it's free.

Unfortunately this is a limitation with the way internal storage is stored on new phones (it's basically like a writeable ROM), so it won't use any other mode than MTP.
You can always use this app since it works through adb commands rather than MTP: Android Commander
I'm glad I found this thread. I thought it was my ssd that didn't like the Samsung phone. My transfers take forever and yes it ends up failing. I didn't know there was a USB mass storage mod...definitely going to try that!
Huh, guess I'm the only one who doesn't mind it. Actually halves the time of data transfer between my on and my phone, I was pretty impressed.

On my Droid 2 I could choose how this was handled. Also if I remember right I remember accessing things on both phone and my Mac. Although I never tried to open or modify the same exact file on both at once (just asking for trouble there of course). Even if that compromise meant not accessing on phone while plugged in...it would still be better than this MTP crap. MTP SUCKS.
Thanks to to above poster about info on MTP creation, too. So it was Micro$oft's handiwork? For Windows Media? Ick. No wonder it's bad.

Sorry to bump an old thread, this is one of the first google hits.
MTP is still, utter garbage for me - several years on.
S3 and S4 - awful on both - just an utterly terrible decision to add it. I truly hate it with all my being.

Is it shabby penguin's 5.5.0.4? I think that's the one I use...
I remember awhile back that one of the CWM 5 versions didn't work properly and I don't remember which one exactly it was nor do I remember what exactly was wrong with it- and I don't know if it was pulled.
Have you tried updating recovery to CWM 6 and reflash the rom? I know if there's an issue with your recovery you will have various issues with the rom that you flash. Hey, it's worth a shot right? I have never had any issue with music detection with apollo with any rom that I've run, but I also haven't done the storage switch thingy (that's technical terms for me at this hour ) If you have issues with music detection without that mod then I would think there's something not right when you flash the rom (which is why I suggest changing recovery). If that mod is causing it and you can't live without it I'm not sure what to suggest

im not honestly to sure what's wrong with the music detection with the 4.1.2 roms lately there was the .nomedia files etc from the ROM Manager from the play store but i had it working awhile back the first time i flashed the 4.1.2 roms ( can't remember which it was ) but the sd card is good im running the CWM 6.0.9 or some $h!t but maybe it could be that im not to sure i can check it out and give it a try see if that helps and as far as the 4.1.2 roms im good without em frankly id rather combine the Paranoid Android 4.1.2 settings ( the split screen is pretty bomb ) then the Blazer 4 Force performance part of that rom ) and the Slimbean Rom but i dont have an up 2 date strong nor big enough PC due to im using a family member's laptop ( in which he might want back and or forgot completely lol ) ( he's my uncle and like 60 something lol ) but in any case don't have a good copy of an up 2 date Linux not really familiar with it i mess with it on an off but don't actually have it as my OS right now due to previous mention but ill give it a shot and c if the change of recovery works and the ringtone and notification thingy work

I would just return your blaze if you can or sell it for another. It is strange only you have this problem and it might be your phone is messed up, although I still think it is the sdcard. Did you ever get another card and try it that way? My sdcard did the same thing yours is now before it died and it was only 2 months old and an official samsung card. I have tried almost every ROM we have here and none give me any media issues. Hell, ever since the SOD got fixed I have been looking for bugs and havent found any serious one. i dont understand like i stated previously when i FIRST flashed a 4.1.2 rom my music detection was instant even after i swapped mounts but now the slimbean will detect music but when i switch ( re flashed to PA trying to c if i can pull a log from a swappable 4.1.2 rom ) and it detects on slimbean but on PA using apollo or any other app it either doesn't detect or it takes awhile to detect the music like after a few reboots i don't understand it though but now in slim bean it detects when the mounts are default ( internal emmc and ext 32 sdcard being external ) but when i flashed pa and swapped points nothing is shown at least right now as i am typing this post so im gonna give it a try and reflash a clockwork recovery then reflash PA c if that helps so thanks guys for the input i sincerely appreciate it and ive hit thanks on almost all that had input now if someone can point in the direction of solving my problem ( i wish well i don't wish nor want anyone to have this problem ) but i don't get why it's only my phone it does it to i guess like i said it's worth a shot in re doing everything and starting from scratch again so who knows ill start with the recovery first then take baby steps and give input and my findings here in a bit thanks once again guys/girls
Wait, your music works before you do the swap? I loaded up slim bean and it reads my music just fine in crappy apollo. I didn't do the swap as I don't really need the space. Have you tried using link2SD instead of mount swapping? What you can do is dedicate another partition on your sdcard to apps and such instead of moving all your apps. You never really answered why you need to swap mounts, is it cause of a game or do you take booty loads of pictures?

Wait, your music works before you do the swap? I loaded up slim bean and it reads my music just fine in crappy apollo. I didn't do the swap as I don't really need the space. Have you tried using link2SD instead of mount swapping? What you can do is dedicate another partition on your sdcard to apps and such instead of moving all your apps. Transfering 4gb+ file to my Mac

Okay, so I've been scouring the Internet and these forums for a way to do this, but haven't come up with an answer, maybe it's just that I'm an idiot and would loose my head if it weren't so stubbornly attached to my body and the answer is right under my nose. Who knows (obviously not me). Anyway, I've downloaded a 7gb .mkv file onto my phone and am currently attempting to get it off my phone. I now have come to understand that the fat32 format of my sd card does not allow me to transfer any files over 4gb to it. This would like explain why I would wait forever for it to transfer and then when it finishes.... it starts all over, and just does that again and again. Next I tried cloud services and I found that they won't let you transfer files anywhere near that size, especially not for free. So that leaves me in my current dilemma. Now here's the details. I've got a brand new Mac I'd like to get the file onto and a Note 2 that I'd like to get the file off of. To complicate matters worse I use my phone for damn near everything Internet related and tether it when using the mac so I don't have any wifi either. I think I could potentially Bluetooth it (maybe?), but that would just take an absurd amount of time of its even possible so that's outta the question even if it is a possibility. Isn't there a way to just hook up my note 2 to the mac and transfer that way? Any help would be greatly, greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!

Is there something wrong with the USB cable?
Nope. Working just fine but I'm guessing you must know something I don't cuz I haven't been able to find a way to transfer the files I want. Also though, on my macbook android file transfer wouldbt work peiod but it does on th imac, weird right? But even with android file transfer working on the imac theres a 4gb file limit so its still no help with the file I'm trying to get moved

Try transferring it to a pc, then transfer it back out to an external hard drive formatted for Ex-FAT.
