Hey guys
I just bought a new Nexus S (the GT-I9023 model) and I really love the phone. BUT, since about two weeks, I have very strange problems with the internal USB storage. When I connect it to a computer (yes, I tried on Windows and Mac OS X), I can mount the drive and copy files to it. But as soon as I try to copy larger files from my Nexus S to my computer, the USB storage disables itself and the file transfer crashes. I constantly have this bug, and I have absolutely no clue why it does this. My Nexus S is 100% stock and not rooted (I'm running 2.3.6). Is this a hardware issue? Should I try to get my phone exchanged? Is that a know bug?
I would be EXTREMELY thankful, if you could help me track down this issue...
Please define "large files".

Do you have adequate space in your storage? The next time you hook your phone up to OSX, empty the trash while the phone is connected. Sometimes the phone will show plenty of available storage but in reality all your previously deleted files are hidden somewhere waiting for you to "empty trash" in OSX.
Long shot here, but you might have a bad USB cable that makes intermittent contact, and USB disabling turning off during large file transfers is just a coincidence. My OEM cable degraded over time and I had to buy a new one.
If none of the above works, there could be some corruption in your file system. You could copy all the contents of the phone to your computer, format the storage, and copy everything that you need back.
There is one more option that happened to me, but I don't want to panic you since it doesn't sound like the same symptoms, but if you'd like to know more: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=993403&highlight=corrupt+storage
OK, all files larger than about 30MB are causing the storage to disable. Also, it's not an issue with the trash (I know what you mean, I know the .trashes folder in OSX). I also have plenty of free space.
By the way, huge thanks for the tip with the cable, it seems to have fixed the problem :O ! I actually didn't even think about an issue as simple as a broken cable... >.< At least, it seems to work fine again. The one thing I still don't get, is WHY it could copy small files from the Nexus to the computer and copy ANY file to the Nexus from the computer, but COULDN'T copy large files from the phone to my Mac....
Anyway, thank you for the simple but INSANELY useful tip!

Yep, glad you got it figured out.
Yeah, thank you! (Also glad it's not my Nexus or my iMac's USB ports )

Hello, does anyone else have or have had problems accessing your SD card? When I connect and select disk drive I just get a new drive called CD Drive F Verizon. In it I only 2 folders drv, and img, and a autorun and TL-Bootstrap files.
Any help is much appreciated.
No problems with my HTC Sensation just with verizon I guess.
Insert your micro SD card in your laptop usb slot with the adapter.
Then open it with your pc.

Thanks for your answer but that is not a solution. I want to be able to access and transfer files to and from the device and PC via the usb cable. And I don't want to have to take the back off, battery out and shutdown the device to do this every time.

You should get a 2nd drive. The one you mention has drivers for USB tethering. A second removable drive should also appear, if your SD card is installed, working and formatted.

Well that's the thing, I only get the one which is the CD Drive. I have HTC Sync drivers installed and I have tried uninstalling but I always get the same.
A modern PC doesn't need any special drivers for a USB drive. Check menu/settings/SD&Phone Storage to see what it says about your SD card.
how long are you waiting?
Sometimes, it takes up to a minute from me selecting usb drive mode to see it on my p.c. Guess it is scanning the whole 32gb card.
The verizon drive pops up real quick, then the second drive takes a while with no notification.

Same for me. It actually took longer than normal today.

Might be stupid, but have you tried rebooting your laptop and phone? Rebooting fixes a multitude of sins.

Yes tried all of this, waiting for one hour and still no extra drive. I'm going to try to take it to verizon when I get back home.
This happened to me on my and my wife's new thunderbolts. Verizon's software on the phone is crap, that's what is messing it up. Just kept messing with it and it seemed to work itself out on her phone. On mine... I rooted, I would recommend this.

I don't think it is the software on the phone, maybe something on the SD card for Verizon, but not sure. I'm rooted with BAMF ROM and I still have the problem.
Try pluging in the phone. Selecting internet pass-thru. Wait a minute or two. Then switch to disk drive mode and wait a minute. I read that would fix it sometimes.

I have never been able to get it to connect the SD card as a drive on my PC. I tried on a couple of other PCs and it works fine.
I think all of the USB ports on my PC are on a hub, and that causes issues.
I mainly use SugarSync to automatically transfer files through the 'cloud'. Works pretty well.
Anyone else having nothing but problems with MTP? It's extremely slow for me and I have great difficulty transfering to the phone. It usually ends up failing and saying that the device has stopped working or been disconnected. Anyone else have any issues?
Yep, I agree...it's junk. I have not rooted yet, so I can't try the mass storage conversion, but if I have to move a ton of files I pull the card and use a reader. Not very convenient, but no failures so far.
What OS/bitlevel are you running? I have had zero problems so far on Win7x64, but have had a great many problems on XPx32.
If you're still running XP at all, I suggest you pull yourself up to this decade. It will help immensely.

I agree. Some idiot's "brilliant idea" at Google. fire them. I think I read somewhere it is for speed allegedly. Um, yeah. Well that hasn't worked out.
I hope they go back to regular USB mass storage in JB 4.1. I just want it to just work, and mount like a drive. Like I did on my old Droid. Worked, always. This MTP is crap crap CRAP.
Is the USB mass storage reliable in CyanogenMod 10? And is the reliable on stock (rooted) on VZW S III? (It works on stock TouchWiz if rooted right?)

MTP was created for the Windows Media player framework. So it was a Microsoft creation. It had nothing to do with Google. Ultimately it would have been Samsung that decided to use MTP and PTP instead of UMS.
And yes, I absolutely agree. It is crap.
MTP was put into place as a solution mainly because USB Mass Storage requires you to unmount from the phone before presenting it over USB, making everything on /sdcard unusable while the device was plugged in.
As I stated previously, if you're running on XP, MTP is still a pile of ****.
It's not perfect, but it's MUCH better on a modern OS.
Try "Myphoneexplore", it's working nicely wirelessly. I think it's the best wireless method. From your desktop you can see your contacts, call list, messages etc..and file transfer to either internal or external SD. Just make sure your pc and your phone are on the same Wifi network.
Edit: and it's free.

Unfortunately this is a limitation with the way internal storage is stored on new phones (it's basically like a writeable ROM), so it won't use any other mode than MTP.
You can always use this app since it works through adb commands rather than MTP: Android Commander
I'm glad I found this thread. I thought it was my ssd that didn't like the Samsung phone. My transfers take forever and yes it ends up failing. I didn't know there was a USB mass storage mod...definitely going to try that!
Huh, guess I'm the only one who doesn't mind it. Actually halves the time of data transfer between my on and my phone, I was pretty impressed.

On my Droid 2 I could choose how this was handled. Also if I remember right I remember accessing things on both phone and my Mac. Although I never tried to open or modify the same exact file on both at once (just asking for trouble there of course). Even if that compromise meant not accessing on phone while plugged in...it would still be better than this MTP crap. MTP SUCKS.
Thanks to to above poster about info on MTP creation, too. So it was Micro$oft's handiwork? For Windows Media? Ick. No wonder it's bad.

Sorry to bump an old thread, this is one of the first google hits.
MTP is still, utter garbage for me - several years on.
S3 and S4 - awful on both - just an utterly terrible decision to add it. I truly hate it with all my being.
Hi basic question regarding my internal sdcard.
Im having an issue and was told I should format my sdcard (I dont have an external sd).
I hooked my phone up via USB and opened it with windows explorer. I see my device and see "Internal Storage", which contains every folder within it. I dont see something specific for "sdcard" and Im unsure how to find it. Is the entire "Internal Storage" folder what Im looking for? Is that what I should completely back up on pc, format and then repopulate? Im nervous about bricking the phone so want to confirm this...
Thanks.
The internal memory is the sd card referred to. You will lose all of your data.

Thanks for the reply. So if I first copy every folder here onto my PC, format it and then put all those folders back, should I expect the phone to restart without any problem and everything fully intact?

thanks really appreciate this guidance.
i know it seems obvious, but doing it your first time is scary so its really helpful to get affirmation that my understanding of what may seem basic and obvious is correct
Haha I know that feeling, first time I tried to root a phone I almost bricked it probably one of my scariest moments. YouTube helps a lot, there's plenty of step by step guides on how to do pretty much everything to your phone.

I have been getting desperate on an issue which I mention in another thread.
I wrecked my phone and got a replacement, got it back to a state I wanted, so that's all good... However, I need to send the damaged phone back by tomorrow (Thursday) or else TMO is going to slap me with a $850 fee.
The problem is that I need to copy the contents of the SD card. This isn't an unreasonable endeavor because the phone, from all appearances, works fine, other than the fact that about 5 seconds after it gets to the desktop, it goes black...but it continues to sound notifications, etc., so I know it is still functioning, albeit with no screen.
When I plug into my laptop using adb, it acknowledges the device, but says its "offline". From looking around the web reading others experience with this error, it doesn't seem like a "real" error. Solutions suggested are changing USB ports, reinstalling drivers, rebooting phone, etc., and the problem seems to go away for those users. However I have tried these solutions, and yet my device still is considered to be "offline".
I use ADB often enough that I never turn off USB debugging so that isn't an issue. But while I know how to push and pull files , or fastboot flash a recovery, I don't know much else about ADB. Is there any experts or ADB gurus who can suggest some other ideas about how I can get this USB convection working? Or at least run some diagnostic too see if in fact the SD card is damaged?
It is very important I get these files of my SD..they are attorney work product and notes regarding a transaction (and also several pictures from the night the phone was damaged) . I make regular backups to dropbox, but apparently not regular enough as my backup wasn't current when I damaged it.
Please ... I am looking for any suggestions. And further, I can't believe that ifthe sd card was in fact damaged, I should still be able to recover some portion of the files. Can one access the sd card when the phone isn't on? It seems rather counterintuitive to me for HTC to create this obstacle consisting the microSD is non-removable on the first place.
Any thoughts are very much appreciated.

Okay, so I've been scouring the Internet and these forums for a way to do this, but haven't come up with an answer, maybe it's just that I'm an idiot and would loose my head if it weren't so stubbornly attached to my body and the answer is right under my nose. Who knows (obviously not me). Anyway, I've downloaded a 7gb .mkv file onto my phone and am currently attempting to get it off my phone. I now have come to understand that the fat32 format of my sd card does not allow me to transfer any files over 4gb to it. This would like explain why I would wait forever for it to transfer and then when it finishes.... it starts all over, and just does that again and again. Next I tried cloud services and I found that they won't let you transfer files anywhere near that size, especially not for free. So that leaves me in my current dilemma. Now here's the details. I've got a brand new Mac I'd like to get the file onto and a Note 2 that I'd like to get the file off of. To complicate matters worse I use my phone for damn near everything Internet related and tether it when using the mac so I don't have any wifi either. I think I could potentially Bluetooth it (maybe?), but that would just take an absurd amount of time of its even possible so that's outta the question even if it is a possibility. Isn't there a way to just hook up my note 2 to the mac and transfer that way? Any help would be greatly, greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!

Is there something wrong with the USB cable?
Nope. Working just fine but I'm guessing you must know something I don't cuz I haven't been able to find a way to transfer the files I want. Also though, on my macbook android file transfer wouldbt work peiod but it does on th imac, weird right? But even with android file transfer working on the imac theres a 4gb file limit so its still no help with the file I'm trying to get moved

Try transferring it to a pc, then transfer it back out to an external hard drive formatted for Ex-FAT.
