Anyone else having nothing but problems with MTP? It's extremely slow for me and I have great difficulty transfering to the phone. It usually ends up failing and saying that the device has stopped working or been disconnected. Anyone else have any issues?
Yep, I agree...it's junk. I have not rooted yet, so I can't try the mass storage conversion, but if I have to move a ton of files I pull the card and use a reader. Not very convenient, but no failures so far.
What OS/bitlevel are you running? I have had zero problems so far on Win7x64, but have had a great many problems on XPx32.
If you're still running XP at all, I suggest you pull yourself up to this decade. It will help immensely.

I agree. Some idiot's "brilliant idea" at Google. fire them. I think I read somewhere it is for speed allegedly. Um, yeah. Well that hasn't worked out.
I hope they go back to regular USB mass storage in JB 4.1. I just want it to just work, and mount like a drive. Like I did on my old Droid. Worked, always. This MTP is crap crap CRAP.
Is the USB mass storage reliable in CyanogenMod 10? And is the reliable on stock (rooted) on VZW S III? (It works on stock TouchWiz if rooted right?)

MTP was created for the Windows Media player framework. So it was a Microsoft creation. It had nothing to do with Google. Ultimately it would have been Samsung that decided to use MTP and PTP instead of UMS.
And yes, I absolutely agree. It is crap.
MTP was put into place as a solution mainly because USB Mass Storage requires you to unmount from the phone before presenting it over USB, making everything on /sdcard unusable while the device was plugged in.
As I stated previously, if you're running on XP, MTP is still a pile of ****.
It's not perfect, but it's MUCH better on a modern OS.
Try "Myphoneexplore", it's working nicely wirelessly. I think it's the best wireless method. From your desktop you can see your contacts, call list, messages etc..and file transfer to either internal or external SD. Just make sure your pc and your phone are on the same Wifi network.
Edit: and it's free.

Unfortunately this is a limitation with the way internal storage is stored on new phones (it's basically like a writeable ROM), so it won't use any other mode than MTP.
You can always use this app since it works through adb commands rather than MTP: Android Commander
I'm glad I found this thread. I thought it was my ssd that didn't like the Samsung phone. My transfers take forever and yes it ends up failing. I didn't know there was a USB mass storage mod...definitely going to try that!
Huh, guess I'm the only one who doesn't mind it. Actually halves the time of data transfer between my on and my phone, I was pretty impressed.

On my Droid 2 I could choose how this was handled. Also if I remember right I remember accessing things on both phone and my Mac. Although I never tried to open or modify the same exact file on both at once (just asking for trouble there of course). Even if that compromise meant not accessing on phone while plugged in...it would still be better than this MTP crap. MTP SUCKS.
Thanks to to above poster about info on MTP creation, too. So it was Micro$oft's handiwork? For Windows Media? Ick. No wonder it's bad.

Sorry to bump an old thread, this is one of the first google hits.
MTP is still, utter garbage for me - several years on.
S3 and S4 - awful on both - just an utterly terrible decision to add it. I truly hate it with all my being.

Hello, does anyone else have or have had problems accessing your SD card? When I connect and select disk drive I just get a new drive called CD Drive F Verizon. In it I only 2 folders drv, and img, and a autorun and TL-Bootstrap files.
Any help is much appreciated.
No problems with my HTC Sensation just with verizon I guess.

Thanks for your answer but that is not a solution. I want to be able to access and transfer files to and from the device and PC via the usb cable. And I don't want to have to take the back off, battery out and shutdown the device to do this every time.

You should get a 2nd drive. The one you mention has drivers for USB tethering. A second removable drive should also appear, if your SD card is installed, working and formatted.

Well that's the thing, I only get the one which is the CD Drive. I have HTC Sync drivers installed and I have tried uninstalling but I always get the same.
A modern PC doesn't need any special drivers for a USB drive. Check menu/settings/SD&Phone Storage to see what it says about your SD card.
how long are you waiting?
Sometimes, it takes up to a minute from me selecting usb drive mode to see it on my p.c. Guess it is scanning the whole 32gb card.
The verizon drive pops up real quick, then the second drive takes a while with no notification.

This happened to me on my and my wife's new thunderbolts. Verizon's software on the phone is crap, that's what is messing it up. Just kept messing with it and it seemed to work itself out on her phone. On mine... I rooted, I would recommend this.

I don't think it is the software on the phone, maybe something on the SD card for Verizon, but not sure. I'm rooted with BAMF ROM and I still have the problem.
Try pluging in the phone. Selecting internet pass-thru. Wait a minute or two. Then switch to disk drive mode and wait a minute. I read that would fix it sometimes.

I have never been able to get it to connect the SD card as a drive on my PC. I tried on a couple of other PCs and it works fine.
I think all of the USB ports on my PC are on a hub, and that causes issues.
I mainly use SugarSync to automatically transfer files through the 'cloud'. Works pretty well.
Hey guys
I just bought a new Nexus S (the GT-I9023 model) and I really love the phone. BUT, since about two weeks, I have very strange problems with the internal USB storage. When I connect it to a computer (yes, I tried on Windows and Mac OS X), I can mount the drive and copy files to it. But as soon as I try to copy larger files from my Nexus S to my computer, the USB storage disables itself and the file transfer crashes. I constantly have this bug, and I have absolutely no clue why it does this. My Nexus S is 100% stock and not rooted (I'm running 2.3.6). Is this a hardware issue? Should I try to get my phone exchanged? Is that a know bug?
I would be EXTREMELY thankful, if you could help me track down this issue...

Do you have adequate space in your storage? The next time you hook your phone up to OSX, empty the trash while the phone is connected. Sometimes the phone will show plenty of available storage but in reality all your previously deleted files are hidden somewhere waiting for you to "empty trash" in OSX.
Long shot here, but you might have a bad USB cable that makes intermittent contact, and USB disabling turning off during large file transfers is just a coincidence. My OEM cable degraded over time and I had to buy a new one.
If none of the above works, there could be some corruption in your file system. You could copy all the contents of the phone to your computer, format the storage, and copy everything that you need back.
There is one more option that happened to me, but I don't want to panic you since it doesn't sound like the same symptoms, but if you'd like to know more: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=993403&highlight=corrupt+storage
OK, all files larger than about 30MB are causing the storage to disable. Also, it's not an issue with the trash (I know what you mean, I know the .trashes folder in OSX). I also have plenty of free space.
By the way, huge thanks for the tip with the cable, it seems to have fixed the problem :O ! I actually didn't even think about an issue as simple as a broken cable... >.< At least, it seems to work fine again. The one thing I still don't get, is WHY it could copy small files from the Nexus to the computer and copy ANY file to the Nexus from the computer, but COULDN'T copy large files from the phone to my Mac....
Anyway, thank you for the simple but INSANELY useful tip!

Yes, I have read other threads prior to posting this. My Samsung infuse WILL NOT connect to my PC to attempt to use GTG's unbrick to revert back to stock. I have tried the following:
1. Multiple USB cables
2. Install Kies
3. Install Kies Mini
4. Uninstall both versions of Kies
5. Install just sole Infuse drivers
6. Attempted multiple computers (2 Windows 64-bit machines, 1 Windows XP SP3)
7. Attempted to use in VMWARE
8. Performed factory reset
9. Used USBdeview to delete any association of the device with the computer
10. Select mass storage mode when prompted to connect to the PC. Also set it to automatically select this setting.
I have tried everything I can find on this form and on the internet, still no luck. My phone makes the noise that it is going to connect and does nothing. Doesn't show that the device is installing, doesn't ever show up under my computer, just sits there. When I pick mass storage on the ROM it goes back to the main screen. I am running GTG's infused ROM, attempting to take back to stock. I have tried Heimdall, I have tried GTG's back to stock methods, phone NEVER is picked up by the computer even in download mode. To say the least, I have tried this OVER AND OVER on multiple machines, within the past week, and I would like to just go out and run my infuse over with my car at this point. I do not believe I will ever be buying a Samsung device again. Can someone please help me before I go insane? Any recommendations would be greatly appreciate on attempting to get this POS to connect to the computer. I am on Windows 7 64-bit edition.
Since you are attempting to unbrick... Have you tried to do a factory reset from the ROM settings?

Apologize for not posting, I ran Odin as Administrator, even tried XP Compatibility mode on both Windows 7 64-bit boxes. I installed Ubuntu, but doesn't appear that GTG's Back to stock is compatible with Wine, so couldn't resort to that option. I didn't recall if I had tried installing Kies mini with administrative rights or XP compatibility mode so I'm trying that now. Will report back. I'm thinking I could have a bad data cable that's just used for charging. Thing is, it worked when I originally rooted the phone from Stock, so I was wondering if it had something to do with the firmware for GTG's infused and Windows 7 64-bit. But, I see plenty of people able to get Odin to work on his build, so doesn't make sense to me. I did flash back to GTG's Infused 2.2.1, seems to have fixed some of the issues I was having with 2.2.3 (random freezing of the phone, system volume freezing and crashing when opening through Settings menu), random WIFI turning on/off. That seems to be all good now. Just wanted to figure this issue out.
No luck... But, Kies Air does work. Still doesn't fix the fact that I can't connect via USB to store back to factory. But, I think that both USB cables I have may be bad for data connection. They are the ones that came with the phone, and BOTH cables attempt to just charge the phone and not attempt to mount the external storage in Windows 7 64-bit. Debating whether or not I want to order another cable, thinking about upgrading devices since I'm eligible at this time. Any recommendations on a good upgrade from the Infuse??

If you're looking for a data cable, i got 2 off Ebay for $1 each. They worked. Search for mini usb DATA cable.
I've seen them go bad midcharge. If you had it plugged in, wiggle it, push slightly in each different direction gently. sew if you can get a brief response.

I know you've said you've tried different cables, I had the same problem and it did turn out to be a cable issue. I tried 3 different types, and I ended up having to use one that I got directly from the local AT&T corporate store.

Thanks guys, will definitely give that a shot and buy a new cable. I'm pretty sure that's gotta be what the issue is. I wouldn't think that 3 different computers are bad with two different OS's. I will probably get one here in a few days. I plan on upgrading the device here soon. I bought it out of pocket retail about six or so months ago so I didn't have to renew my contract. I'm waiting to see what they release at the end of next month's conference before upgrading. Probably give a quad core a shot to see how they are

Drivel,
While you are plugged in, try pushing the connection around a bit. See if there is any recognition. If there isn't, i think you may have a hardware issue.
If it was a hardware issue, the trick it's to get att to honor their warranty.
if you're running infused, the trick is how to get out back to stock or to brick it
The closet thing i can think of is to download download dman uckl2 rooted package via kies air or by phone. Dl the stock kernal. Flash the ROM, disable lagfix, then flash the stock kernel.
That's as close to stock as I can think off for you to take to the att store and have them check the usb hardware port

Pull usb from comp and phone.
Hard reboot of phone,reboot comp.
Reload Kies mini

plug in usb to comp.
phone usb to kies.
plug in usb. Go/no go?
No go pull phone sd card. Repeat all above. Go/no go.
No go? wipe internal memory.

Appreciate the help guys. It's weird because when I first had the phone it worked for me to root the phone. I think I'll just stick to Kies air if I need to back up or anything. [14] On February 3, 2012, the update went live on Kies Mini.
Samsung Infuses with "Kernel 2.6.32.9" blocks Kies Mini from being able to update to Android 2.3.6 "Gingerbread". An over the air patch should be released by 2/8/2012 to fix this issue.[citation needed]-
OK guys i love my Nexus S, its a great phone, fast smooth etc etc.
Running CyberGR's rom (tho i noticed with every other rom i tried)... usb transfer speeds are sporadic at best. I couldnt even transfer a 500mb file to the storage when i have GB's free.
What gives. Tried both within the rom, and in recovery. Its not the cable tried multiple.
Hell i can transfer the file over wifi maxing out the wifi without issues... so it seems like its just a usb transfer problem!
Any tips etc?
I noticed the slow USB write speed too.
My Nexus S (i9023) running stock 4.0.4 had the Matr1x 18.5 kernel flashed yesterday. It actually made the transfer speed even worse. With stock kernel around 1.5 MB/s and now just around 0.7 MB/s.
I read some where that the problem is in the 3.x kernel family. I guess it makes sense, because with Android 2.3.6 (2.x kernel family) the USB transfer speed was usable.
If you need to move data to the phone fast, the boot into recovery (CWM) and mount USB storage. Going around the kernel (or whatever the problem is) you should be able to write 5-7 MB/s.
That's still an issue with 4.0.4? :S
Guess ICS isn't ready enough for me yet.
even in recovery write speed starts out alright... but then tanks like no ones business. to the point where it didnt even want to finish the 500MB file i was trying to transfer.
hmmm.
Read speeds within android are 100% fine... around 20-22MB/s
And i just transfered 150MB to the phone within android at 1.9MB/s without any issues.... but it seems like every other time when i try and do a xfer it will get halfway and the just stop all together.
try using a program called terra copy.it does the job for me.speeds the transfer alot.

thats a sad excuse for a solution IMO. on my old crappy slow LG p500 i could read and write from the sd card like no ones business never had any issues etc.
now... im lucky to be able to finish coppying the file cus the transfers are so shotty.
another interesting thing i found is that when using ADB push... to push the same file to the sd card, i got a nice consistant 4MB/s within android (obviously sd / usb storage not mounted)
no one has any tweaks etc etc.... i have tried changing the read ahead to 2048 and that changes nothing.

Yes it looks like it.
I've tried to test the transfer speed using Ubuntu, but with no luck.
I didn't get more than 0.7 MB/s so it is not a Windows USB problem.
I haven't found any statement from Google saying they're aware of the problem.
I hope they fix it in the next ICS release (if there'll be one)
Try astro manager and download the extra modules. Its free
If you experience slow USB speed, transfer files through ADB. It will be much faster.
That's not the point here. I think the point is is that with 4.0.4, there's a bug involving usb file transfer from PC to phone. We know there are alternatives but one shouldn't have to go through all that just to transfer files.
Hello! REALLY hoping I can find some help here! Tried everything! Really!
So the story is like so, I decided I wanted to root my phone and customize it a bit since I've previously owned an jailbroken iphone and really liked how I could change ANYTHING. BUT! I did not get far. My computer can not find my phone. Never connected my phone to my computer for other reasons than to charge, which still works, so never really noticed it. But yeah, charging works but other than that, nada. My phone model is the L29 version. 4gb ram etc.
Checklist:
Yes phone is unlocked.
Yes phone has usb debug on.
Yes phone is on MTP mode, yes I did enable/disable that tons of times since I heard it can help.
Yes I got the allow hisuite ADB or whatever it is called enabled.
Yes the phone does charge perfectly so there is some connection.
Yes I have installed all drivers, including hisuite. MTP packs, android studio with all extras.
Yes I have tried installing legacy hardware for multiple different MTP and android usb drivers.
What could it be?! I am going nuts by now, I don't even care that much about rooting anymore I just want the usb part to be working. (although yes I do still wanna root, will probably need more help then too).
Really thankful if anyone takes their time to help.
Best Regards, Dennis.
