[Q] "Unlock" HTC Titan to load a single unsigned app (audible beta)? - Windows Phone 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Audible has offered to invite me to the private beta if I have a phone capable of installing their .XAP file. I don't but I would very much LIKE to have a phone capable of doing this. I have done some googling (binging?) and discovered my options seem to be
Apphub account ($100)
Windows break (Samsung/LG only)
Dreamspark (verified students only)
I have an HTC Titan on AT&T in the US running everything exactly as it came... I have not modified anything.
I have not been a student in years (not sure what it takes to get "verified"??)
It seems foolish to pay $100 for one app that will be out for free soon.
So... Options? I do not need any carrier unlock, ability to put apps int he marketplace, etc... Just the ability to install a single .XAP.
Thanks in advance!

I don't think you need to unlock your phone in order to test a private beta

I know that is possible (from other things I have read about) but their reply to my email indicated that an unlocked phone was required. Perhaps they simply choose not to use this option even though it's available?

JusThinK said:
In general for private beta, they might need your phone live ID and later they will give you a direct market download link, which you can download from the market, like Nokia PlayTo beta application.

Yes, they ask for your live ID and then give you the MP link.

If eligible, does a person signing up for this program recieve whatever is necessary to developer unlock a functioning handset (Focus)? I see that you can download the emulator...
You will indeed, when you sign up you are required to submit an application to Microsoft, they will also get a company called GeoTrust to run some checks on you and once approved they will enable your Windows Live ID developer status and therefore able to use to unlock tool on your phone.
The process is rather innocuous. You DEFINITELY need to submit a dummy app to get passed the first step. It will take roughly a week but maybe sooner.

seconded to this
it took me about 2 days to get dev access but I didn't get a confirmation email just plugged in my focus phone registration bam done
So, not to beat a dead horse... Once you're approved for the dreamspark program (I just got approved and now have access), you can download all this wonderful design software. At this point, you have to submit a new app in order to get the phone developer-unlocked?
Si, con queso. You summed it up perfectly.
Crap.... I guess I'm going to have to figure out how to make an app. This could take a while...
Just use FollowMyFeed to create some site-specific news app. These are guaranteed to get approved. You don't have to actually publish it.
Failing that, just use Chevron until you get approved. Either way, the only thing you're achieving is the changing of a single bit in the registry from a 0 to a 1. Unofficial developer unlocks work just as well as official ones!
Yeah, the problem is that I used Chevron to un-brand the phone (AT&T) so that I could force the NoDo update.
Obviously I didn't do the research into how to keep the phone unlocked post NoDo. It's a total failure on my part... The torturous part is that I saw the potential benifits of having a developer unlocked handset while I was in the process of forcing the update.
I love how my LG phone has a built in registry editor. So you don't need to do any hacks to modify the registry. You can just use the built in software to do the developer unlock, and off you go
So... there's no way of 'jailbreaking' Samsung phones anymore?
I still think you should check out FollowMyFeed. Spend 5 minutes making an app with that, and you'll be approved in no time at all.
Yeah, microsoft closed the Chevron "code error" with NoDo.
I checked out Followmyfeed. Does it produce an .xap when done?
I'm still loading the devopler software on my computer. I'm assuming there will be some sort of provision to upload the .xap for approval?
If you're going to go through the effort of submitting a dummy app just to unlock your device, why not just pay the $99 App Hub membership fee, submit two apps, and then get your $99 refunded back to you?
I didn't know that was an option... I'm learning. Getting suggestions is why I started this thread.
@ft55555: I havne't heard of anybody getting reimbursed, but even assuming that was possible...
No reason to go that route if you can use Dreamspark, it gives you the same unlock ability without the money.
Canceling your dev account will re-lock your phone.
I went ahead and submitted an app I created on followmyfeed. Looks like I'm just waiting for the identity verification from Geo Trust. We'll see how it goes.
Works
This method worked for me in just a few hours! Verification was relatively quick and painless, but I did have to use followmyfeed to create an app and submit it. It does not even have to work, but you have to go through the pain of creating artwork for the app and everything also.
Yeah, this method does work. It only took about 3 hours for approval once subbmitted. I did go and make an app with followmyfeed but the longest part of that was just selecting and propperly formatting the artwork (I just saved some pics from online and then formatted them to propper size with Photoshop).
I got the approval to developer unlock my focus within about three hours, and the rest is history.

Or, if you are a student(/Microsoft Student Insider) like me, you can get your device developer-unlocked via dreamspark (you just need to find your school on the site to get verified) and pay $0 the whole time. As far as I know, you can keep the dreamspark status for as long as you're in school, possibly be able to keep it after graduating (but I haven't gotten to that point yet).
ok I have been able to set up dreamspark and download the windows phone package. I then made an app with followmyfeed. now how do you send it to Microsoft to get you phone unlocked please? (do you need to pay 99 bucks??)
thx

[Q] Chevron unlock guide?

I know it's fairly simple process (if nothing goes wrong), but if possible, i would appreciate if someone can confirm if i understand prerequisites:
1) phone name in Zune must be unique.
I hate that kinda, but ok.
2) i need to have WP SDK installed.
Is that that huge install of a couple of GBs?
I would give a link, but download center keeps redirecting to some windows server update
3) chevron unlock tool
Am i missing something?
Again, i know there is FAQ on chevron, but it's thin on SDK part.
1) Best to ask them on Twitter @chevronwp7 or @WithinRafael.
2) Download the Support Tools or the SDK from here ( 14 Mb Each )
32-bit system, download the WPSupportToolv2-x86.msi package.
64-bit system, download the WPSupportToolv2-amd64.msi package.
3) chevron unlock tool is cheaper solution but if you need to put your apps in Market place you need App Hub Account
Chevron Tool basically uses The SDK and Zune to communicate with WP to unlock.
Let me know if you have more questions. I have written a tutorial on how to do it and it includes a bit length video if you want it.
Thanks alot!
Lol I though that I will have my phone inter-op unlocked after buying the token key.
What am i missing if i don't have interop?
If so you are not able to deploy apps that need root permissions such as wp7 root tool etc, apps that needs access to registry, write are not permitted

So i might miss out on some "more advanced" homebrew apps?
Do you maybe have concrete examples?
the reason i'm interested in unlocking is, and i'm not ashamed to admit it, to pirate apps from marketplace.
WP has been on the market where i live (Croatia) almost right from the start, and i've been an early adopter (got my omnia in feb). And there is still not a mention of when paid marketplace and various other services will be available.
Also, because i had to create another live account registered to UK and use it as my main phone account (for free marketplace access), my office hub is empty, and there are no skydrive photo albums in pictures hub, since all of them are on the live account i actually use, and not on this token i had to create. I missing out on great features.
With that in mind, do i need interop unlock for marketplace apps?

N00B Question

I just got the Sprint Arrive yesterday. I am gathering that the Arrive is a little different version than the HTC 7 Pro. Does that mean that all the data i found towards unlocking the HTC 7 Pro does not apply to the Arrive? I am really trying to find a way to side load apps. I have gathered that i can if i go through AppHub or Chevron is that correct?
Correct. The Arrive has not been jailbroken at this time. The only way to sideload is to either Dev unlock from Microsoft (i.e. pay the $99 developer fee or via the Student option) or to pay for the Chevron unlock (which has hit the limit at the moment -- expect an updated limit "soon").

Once i get DEV unlocked will i be able to use some of the items in the deveopment section here at XDA or am i just able to side load at that point?
Dev unlock allows you to install programs (XAP files). Some of them will work, others will not (those that require higher levels of unlock). This includes not being able to enable Internet Connection Sharing at this point.
Layne thank you for all your help. I just have one last question. I got an App Hub account and registered my phone. I read somewhere about receiving an email. Do I need that email first or am I done and ready to side load?
If you unlocked it with the tool (part of the SDK), then you should be set.
https://login.live.com/login.srf?wa...28v=VS.92%29.aspx&lc=1033&id=254354&mkt=en-US
You can deploy your own code via Visual Studio or XAP files through the other tools.

[Q] Will an unlocked phone stay unlocked?

I have an LG Quantum running Mango that is developer-unlocked.
I'm a student developer (signed up with an .edu account), which means I'm still on my free year. Once that free year expires, will my phone remain unlocked?
If not, can I use this tutorial to keep it unlocked? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=974874
Thanks,
David
The phone will automatically re-lock once your AppHub account expires (although, if you're still a student at that point, I believe you can renew for free).
However, there's really no reason to limit yourself to the AppHub account. That tutorial you linked will work just fine, but it's missing one more value that you should set: MaxUnsignedApp (under the same registry key). This value controls how many non-Marketplace apps you're allowed to install (which, on your student account, is the painfully low value of 3). It also controls whether your phone is "interop-unlocked"; set it to at least 300 to be able to install apps that can use high-privilege system services nd drivers to break out of their sandboxes (for example, my MutilTaskToggle app and the upcoming WP7 Root Tools for LG both require this). Most people just set the value to 2,000,000,000 or so.

Thanks! I've used this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1271963 to interop-unlock my phone already. Does this do the trick?
Also, is the WP7 Deployment tool offered from AppHub the only deployment tool available? Just curious.
Yeah, the Interop Unlock thread works fine. You'll notice it instructs you to do basically the same things as the other one, except it also instructs you to change MaxUnsignedApp.
It's not the only or even the best tool, no. However, most third-party tools rely on having the SDK installed anyhow, so you might want to do that nonetheless.

Can you direct me to some better deploying tools, by any chance?
TouchXperience works just fine, and has the additional advantage of tracking which apps are installed for purposes of backing up data from them.
Otherwise, just do a search for XAP Deployer. I've tried a few, but most have either had some bugs or not been worth the advantages they offered. I've forgotten which other tools worked best, but you can probably make some guesses by the popularity of the threads.
If the official tool would just associate with XAP files correctly, that would be fine. Instead, it doesn't do so automatically and even if you associate it manually you still have to manually select the file when the program starts.

Motorola Solutions TC55

Hello,
I have a TC55 from Motorola Solutions (i.e. the enterprise division that does not belong to Google). It is a rugged phone with a big battery (4400 mAh), but certainly not the sleekest design. Not sure if there is much interest in this kind of device, and I am certainly no developer - but in case anyone is investigating the TC55, here are two things I found so far:
It does not come with any Google apps: no Maps, no Gmail, no Play store and so on.
It is easily rooted with Framaroot using the Gandalf exploit.
(I cannot post this info into the Framaroot thread due to my low post count).
Anyway, maybe this helps someone. I will be happy to try to answer any questions about the TC55, but keep in mind I am no pro and I am not keen in messing around in its internals much more than I have done already.

I heard my company is planning to go with these soon for entry level supervisors such as myself. I'm trying to figure out exactly what it is. All the specs and brochures from Motorola keep calling it a mobile computer in a smartphone "form factor" but never actually call it a phone. I didn't see anything in any of the specs to lead me to believe for sure that it was a phone or if it was just an Android computer in a smartphone form factor.
Anyway, I just wanted to confirm, that, you're certain this is a phone, correct?
Thanks.

Yes, definitely. You can call and get called, and you can send and receive SMS. It also supports wired headsets, and it is supposed to work with Bluetooth headsets, though I do not have any to test.

Thanks for the info but it looks like mine is going to be crippled.
Sort of a let-down really. Yes, it "can" be a phone. Or without a sim card it can be a really powerful Android based mobile computer. That's what it is going to be for most of us. Only a few supervisors with area management approval are going to get units with the phone features working. Still cool. Just not as cool as I'd thought it was going to be.

I see, sorry to hear that. It sounds weird to me to do that, but then again I have no clue about this type of work.
Maybe the crippling could be worked around or undone by people with good Android knowledge - but I suppose it might not be the best idea to go against company policy.

I don't think they're doing anything all that special to cripple it. They just won't all have sim cards or a cell plan. Pretty much as simple as that.
I won't be doing anything to circumvent that though or rooting it or anything like that. It's not like it's a gift and it belongs to me or anything. After almost 22 years, I've kind of grown to like my job and getting a paycheck every two weeks.I'd kind of like to keep it for another 15 or 20 years. Who knows, maybe my manager will decide that I need cell service with mine.
I work for a large automaker in the U.S. We have over 2.8 million square feet under roof. Personally, I can be anywhere on in the plant, on the roof, in pits & sub-basements underneath or anywhere on or near the 50 acre plant site at any given time. A lot of what I need to do on a daily basis is through our intranet portal. They're putting in something like 500 new wi-fi repeaters/extenders all around the plant as well. They're purchasing these for over 300 first line supervisors at my site alone. I'm pretty sure they're doing this corporate-wide so I hate to think what they're spending on these things as a corporation. I'm sure it would bankrupt many small nations! In addition to giving us portal access away from the desk, these are meant to replace our aging industrial radio system. As expensive as these are, they're still much cheaper than $1.5 to $2k per person for a radio that has no other built-in functionality and these do seem pretty ruggedized.
Still a shame about the phone functionality though.

Can you see what browser it comes with? Can you install (untrusted) APKs directly without rooting it?
FYI, in case anyone's wondering, there is a version with Google apps on the way (if it isn't already orderable).

google account
Hi,
I got stucked with trying to get google calendars from my google account to TC55.
I found one solution to setup google account as a corporate one, but it's not available anymore due to change in google policy.
I can setup google mail via email account, but that doesn't bring me my calendars to the device.
I tried to install gapps but without success.
Is there any other way?
Thanks.

No idea, I haven't tried. As far as I understand gapps are usually installed via flashing a zip from recovery, and the stock recovery of the TC55 does not have that option, it only allows reflashing a whole image, if I understand it correctly. Either way, I have come to appreciate the open source alternatives and do not want to get Google on my phone, so I will not try, sorry.
However, going by this thread over at the Motorola support forum, it seems it won't take long until there is official gapps support:
https://developer.motorolasolutions.com/thread/4989
Motorola has now released a TC55-firmware with Google apps. Here are the release notes:
https://atgsupportcentral.motorolasolutions.com/content/emb/docs/ReleaseNotes/Release%20Notes%20-%20%20TC55_RevAPlus_GMS_01%2074G_v10.htm
According to the support email they sent me, to get the actual release you need to perform the following arcane ritual:
Resolution Type is : Software Download
Resolution Id is  : 95562
Resolution Title is : TC55 Update Image v1.74 with GMS (Google Mobile Service) Release Note & Factory Reset & Enterprise Enabler package

T55N0JGMVAUEN17400.apf 321 MB TC55 OS update package file for deployment using MSP
If you require access to OS files for TC55 1.74 GMS then call the local Support Desk and provide following information:

b. Serial #(s)
c. Phone #
d. Customer name (First and Last)
e. E-mail address

Hi Elanguescence,
I think I screwed up my tc55 by enabling the multiuser function without first creating the white list. Now all the users (with admin rights) does not have access to all the programs, including Applock Administrator and Multiuser administrator.
To cut things short, do you know of a way to reset the device? I don't mind setting it to factory default and start over. I've googled it and some said to launch Rapid Deployment and scan a barcode from there... but my Rapid Deployment just says "Service Not Ready, Please Wait" and get stuck there.
Any help appreciated. Thank you.
Any TC55 users here? Should be getting my unit w/ GMS soon... How do you guys like it?

Hey!
I want to Buy one TC55 for me. Normally i hate Android and the Google stuff on the Phone but some Motorola Salesman told me there is a version with out.
Now i use an Sybian Device. That mean i am "offline" the hole time and when i need Internet the Phone connect the the Internet.
So how about that phone can i work "offline" to?
I will also use an VPN Tunnel to block on my backend all Connnection i dont want. Does all Data trough this VPN Tunnel ?
How about the Barcode Scanning does it work good?
I know for 2D i need to use the Cam but how works it when i am in some other Application?
Nobody?
Ok. I just bought a TC55 from a Friend and I was wondering if someone would post the update to get GSM and the Factory Reset packages. I went to the page and it requires all the information posted above before. Mine is rooted, but i am trying to install GAPS but the recovery is the basic and cannot. I manually installed Google Play and the Google Play Services but Google Play services keep crashing and the Play Store will not connect, any ideas ?
the are 2 versions one with google s... service and the other without.
So i belive you have the first?
(Can i ask you some question about that phone?)
