As the title suggests, which would you get if they were similarly priced? I can't really decide cos I want some features from each...
RAZR - Aluminium body and Kevlar back, really sturdy construction
Nexus - Curved HD screen, better GPU (by how much I don't really know)
I'm a fairly heavy user, currently on the Desire Z. Locally, the GN is not even released yet but will be in a few weeks, while the RAZR is already available.
I believe the RAZR is already rooted, which means development should be picking up, and the GN development is already gaining momentum.
The only thing I worry is that the RAZR might not be that popular with devs and the custom ROMs would be lacklustre. I don't have that worry with the GN cos well it's a Nexus.
Of course that galaxy nexus.
It has ics/gorilla glass/4.65" screen and a lot more..
And the RAZR will get it from custom ROMs as well, and internally they're almost identical. RAZR is also Gorilla Glass >.< That's why I find it really tough to decide.
G'day,
Im in the exact same situation. My DHD stopped working recently and i need a new phone. I was originally going to create the thread u just made XD.
Personally im going with the razr for several reasons.
The razr has a much better design, also, not that it really makes a difference but the razr has a larger memory capacity at 40/48gbs including a 32gb micro sd.
Also the razr has a much better battery life, from what i have heard. However i do see your point with the devs, but do u really need a custom rom for this? I dont see the point personally (at the moment). Motorolla have included some pretty handy apps like MotoCast + the smart actions ect and as i said this phone already does have root. You proabably know this but, ICS is coming to the RAZR and soon. I really dont mind waiting, simply because this phone is quite a bit faster and looks much better TBH. Also the speaker of the Razr is much better if u care
The Nexus only has a better screen over the Razr.
But the choice is yours You probably already know all this but i need to get my posts up
Best of luck!

Yeah maybe but the Droid X bootloader is still locked. And look how long that phones been out. But they still get some great rims on the X. Miui and Cm7. I like the nexus for development purposes but the I like the razr for overall looks and feel of the phone. Lol. And I'm not really to much worried about the locked bootloader. If they get miui running on the razr I am down. :-D

The problem with a locked bootloader is not the ability to use different ROM's..it is the ability to change your kernel. With a locked bootloader you can ONLY use the stock kernel. So say you get the RAZR...yes, it will be updated to ICS. Say android 5.0 (jellybean) comes out in september. If that happened, your razr MIGHT get the update by february. So while everone else is playing with CM10...you are still stuck with your ICS. Also, you will never be able to overclock or underclock your cpu, as the stock kernel does not allow it. You can't use fastboot...there is just too much that a locked bootloader doesn't allow for it to be a real option if you want to root your phone.

True but that's the thing. My friends Droid X is overclocked. Lol. And i play with kernels a lil bit but i mostly just use incredikernels. Which I will probally go with the nexus for the reasons u listed above but the razr is a sweet device.

I love the ICS leak SO MUCH. It's amazing. It's fast. It's smooth. And, best of all... it's nearly stock!
That's why I'm gonna stick with the leak even after the full release comes out. Because the full release is bound to have more blur, maybe the Moto flip-up icons, and probably some of those Moto widgets I'd never want.
So unless the completed ICS release has some MAJOR bug fixes (which I doubt, since I've seen zero bugs and performance is great), I see no reason to upgrade. I'm so happy with the leak.
Anyone else feel the same way? Or is there some major feature still missing from the leak that people are gonna want?

Though, I can tell your enthusiasm in regards to the "leaked" and unofficial release of 4.0.04, I think it would be foolish of you to not take the OTA once it has been released to us.
Furthermore, since the leak is unofficial release, there still begs the questions as to why some are on 1.2GHz ad others on the 'stock' 1GHz, plus the other bugs noted in the [BUGS] thread.
Now, you may not have noticed any of the issues listed in the thread, but in being on a leaked version of ICS you will receive NO support, and likely the work of our amazing devs will be working off the official ICS version with their roms once released.
Just my two bits...
I absolutely love this ics leak on my phone, have absolutely no problems whatsoever . Only reason I may switch to the official release is the potential of upgrading to jellybean... but honestly I may move to verizon and get the DROID RAZR HD sometime in September or October. So who knows if I'll even make it that far with the ATRIX 2 lol

Its funny you bring up how some caught the 1.2MHz and others got just 1MHz. Before I bricked my first I know 100% fact was clocking at 1.2MHz in fact, I posted a Screenshot of my results on benchmark. Now this replacement is at 1. Dont know if its the ROM or what but thia what I got now.

I'll stick to the SCV7 rom until I see what the actual release looks like.
No doubt in my mind going official..... Fairly sure it will be even more stable than the leak..... Small things do need to get fine tuned might not be bugs but do affect performance..... Imho leak is awesome now.....
If I were on the ICS leak I would definitely update to the official OTA when ICS comes out. The ICS leak right now does have some peculiarities that need to be addressed. Also, I'm 90% sure that the official OTA is going to be just as blurred as the leak is. If you plan on flashing any ROMs based off of stock ICS then you should definitely be on the official OTA beforehand.

Why the Razr HD? AT&T essentially has a Razr HD... take a look at the Atrix HD. But remember that the Razr HD and the Atrix HD will both be very locked down, just like the A2... the Atrix HD doesn't even have root yet. Just FYI, a new Nexus phone is always announced around that time of year... .

The same thing happened with the DROID Bionic ICS leaks (1Ghz or 1.2Ghz - I'm at 1.2Ghz), and the general consensus is that there is some type of stress test that determines whether you get the 200Mhz bump or not.

Dude why do you think I switched? It has a carrier-unlocked pentaband radio that works with virtually any GSM or HSDPA+ network. I'm still under contract to AT&T and was tired of the A2's dev limitations due to the locked bootloader, having previously come from a Samsung phone (I still have the A2 anyways as a beater). Spend the paltry $350 if you can do it, because it's the best value smartphone currently out for the price, 4.1 Jellybean lives up to the hype in every way, direct updates from Google certainly doesn't hurt, and it has the biggest and best Android dev community hands down. After owning this phone I will never purchase another phone that isn't a carrier-unlocked Nexus, to put it simply. And that's fine because my phone is still guaranteed for at least the next 2 major updates even if I don't decide to buy the new Nexus that will inevitably drop in November. Carrier and manufacturer freedom is a fantastic combination.

Call me greedy, but I'd rather have an unlocked bootloader so we can run Cyanogenmod. That's where it's at.

Loll noooo.... seriously, I genuinely love the company... when I was in undergrad I even did an internship with one of their subsidiaries over seas. I'm back in grad school now, but when I finish I'm truly thinking of changing careers and applying for a job with them.
You guys wouldn't believe the amount of motorola devices I've gone through, the original Motorola Q is still my favorite device ever!
All my mobile tech gear at the moment is motorola, my phone, tablet, Bluetooth headset, stereo Bluetooth headset for working out, hands free car kit speaker is all Motorola! If they made a pc/laptop, I would buy it lol (lapdock doesn't count )
I know we all like to complain about some of their annoying policies like the locked boot loader, etc... hell I bricked my Xyboard and had to mail it to them (and the customer service was awesome) but the quality of their hardware is almost in a league of their own!
Yeah I'm a bit obsessive but I have very strong feelings about this company lol

Well, I am so happy for you that you switched (sense the sarcasm here?) but I have to call you out on one thing. You comment about the devs "limitations" and being tired of that, well, I must say you've just had the cross hairs put over your forehead with that statement. Tell me where else you can find the talent, experience, and devotion to a device and community than right here? Sure, any mildly intelligent person who can fog up a mirror can mod/theme/rom for any device with full unlocked provisions, but to discount the abilities of those who have done what they have for this phone in spite of a locked bootloader is just insulting. Maybe I'm getting defensive here, and I don't really care if I am. Even if that wasn't you're implication, might be nice to have some decency about you and respect for the devs here with the caveat of "regardless of the limitations, the devs still have made some amazing breakthroughs, but I just wanted more" or something along that line. Not by saying that 'I'm so tired of these guys not being able to do anything with the A2'. Furthermore, this thread isn't a "look how awesome I am because I have a better phone than anyone else" thread...
Oh, by the way, did you ever get your MMS working on that Nexus? For me, and my A2, we still get picture messages from girls wanting to show us their melons.

Hi folks, contract up in January, I'm after a phone with good hardware and long battery life that I can flash to 4.1 vanilla.
Any news on roms in the works for HD and HD MAXX?
I noted there was a 4.1 leak, can anyone confirm if this is vanilla android?
Its vanilla Motorola blur. There is dev support for the HD. there is no recovery for the HD yet. The phone has been out for two weeks. Roms will come
Sent from my DROID RAZR HD using xda premium
There is a recovery now. Check the Dev forum. But I'm personally waiting for some stock jellybean ROMs before i unlock my bootloader. To be quite honest though this could be the perfect AOSP device for anyone who prefers all of what the SGS3 has to offer but hates its build quality. But because its development is so close to the Nexus 4's release i fear we won't get much interest in this device because this baby would fly with JB.

What is the moto hardware like? Is there good support and can we expect something like a CM10-11 stable? I'm just trying to decide between a Nexus 4 with up to date software or a Razr HD with the bigger battery.

I made the call to purchase an HD Maxx via Swappa to replace my GNex. Post Jellybean Gnex battery life has dropped to ~6hrs, so battery life became #1 priority for me. However, since I bought the phone at retail price and not through any subsidized plan, I did not sign a new contract. This preserves my unlimited data, and allows me to jump to another carrier if I wish . . . I believe my contract end date is sometime in December.
With the Gnex, Verizon screwed up in such an epic fashion that I was ready to jump ship as soon as the Nexus 4 launched. But its battery being only 2100mah, nonremovable, and wildly varying numbers for battery life as well as its paltry internal storage really put me off.
Still might sell off the Gnex and HD Maxx in a few months . . . a 32GB/64GB Nexus 4 would really help that decision.
Straight trade. I need opinions by the morning.

The only thing on verizon i would trade for is the droid DNA because of the quad core cpu and 1080p display.
I did exactly that last month. Haven't looked back. But at the same time if I had stuck with the s3 I don't think i would have regretted that either. Razr HD has the great build of aluminum and kevlar, the cool led notification bar under the logo and a nice aosp-ish software build, plus battery life is better. However, run the Razr HD launcher on CM10 on the s3 and thats basically the speed experience you get on the razr. Software stutter included, scrolling left to the quick settings stutters the first time you do it after each unlock, and the camera isn't terrible but is noticeably worse. A little annoying. I'm actually debating going back to the Galaxy nexus for some pure 4.2

GS3 or GN2, anything else is a downgrade!
Maybe you have never owned a Moto. I always have until I bought this GS3 because I vowed to dump them for their locked bootloader BS! I was very sick and tired of the inability to load a custom kernel. Do you want to overclock? Do you want alot of development for your phone? I'm not saying there isn't development for moto, but it's a difficult and time consuming process. You may be looking many many months before you can just overclock. Everything is a pain because you have to work around their kernel which can't be touched. Kexec is still fairly new for Moto and last I checked there was only one custom kernel that could be side loaded for the Razr and devs couldn't figure out how to get the second core to work on the CPU. Obviously this is a hot subject with me lol. My last Moto was the "red headed step child"(BIONIC). Bionic..."The machine of all machines" Motorola's Flagship". Then 2 or 3 weeks later the Razr comes out and claim that the flagship! That was strike one and it continued from there through development struggling. The only thing thats good about Moto is there decent build quality, radios, and when something good finally gets developed for it you just about poop yourself!

The battery isn't a problem for the GS3 because of the fact you can put in a new battery or extended. The Razr line does have nice build quality but ugly design. To me, I think Samsung does a better job with their software and the camera is a lot better vs Motorola. I haven't notice any worst when it comes to wireless radio going from a Maxx to a GS3. The Wi-Fi is better on my GS3. Even though the newer Motorola phones have that "stock Android" look & feel it doesn't feel optimized yet. It lags from time to time. And the Samsung development is way better. The developers have done awesome work and pretty much negated the locked boot loader. Motorola's development is a joke. There's no reason to get a Motorola phone any time soon in my opinion. They haven't stepped anything up in the last few years except for battery life.
It seems to me like development for the Thunderbolt has almost completely died out. I am strongly considering moving on to something else with an ARM processor and a good battery. If we were given a stable Jelly Bean ROM, then I would have stuck with it longer. The only thing even close is a meshed together 4.0.1 that is still broken in some ways. Is there anything better in your opinion than Jelly Bean with more features and options? What else would you like to say? Thanks!
Due to the fact that I am a Verizon customer w/a tenuous grip on unlimited data and bored w/the non-ICS/Jelly Bean-havin' Bolt, just bought a Samsung Nexus on eBay. Move on, dude, move on.
I have been eyeing the MOTOROLA DROID RAZER MAXX HD. The extra battery life would be wonderful. I will never buy another damn thing from HTC. I don't want to be put on the back burner for Jelly Bean 4.2 or Key Lime Pie. Do you think it will be Déjà vu all over again? Extra long delays or never showing up at all. I think I might be better off choosing a MOTOROLA device now that Google owns them.

Remember locked boot loader unless you get the developer one.
I still love my droidx.. oh they have a workaround for the boot loader but you loose a core (duel core goes to single core)

Doesn't matter which manufacturer, any device will be extremely lucky to upgrade more than once, if at all. They want you to keep buying the newest thing.

But the phone manufacturer that updates the most-often, customers will recognize that. Well some customers, anyway.
Not to hijack but what about the Droid X boot loader? You mean X2 since you said the workaround takes a core? And I guess it doesn't apply to the OG Droid X?

Dude...JB was just released in July...chillax. In the meantime, try checking out twistedumbrella's ICS roms. He's on 4.0.4 now.

I second this. He's continually improving it, although a few people have had bootloops on more recent versions.

Santod's UnSensed ICS over on Infected Rom Forums is pretty awesome too. Feels a lot like Twisted's build in many ways, except that there are Sense apps here and there for functionality and the video camera works.
