Do you 'root' the rest of your life too? - HTC Sensation

Most of us her root our phones to suck every last bit of potential out of them.
I'm curious if most of us 'root' the rest of our lives fro the same reason as well.
For example, I pulled the stock intake out of my car and put in a high flow intake system. I don't race or even drive like a maniac, just like I don't use my rooted phone to do too much more than make phone calls and browse the web. I just like that I can make my car a little more fuel efficient and get a little more power for acceleration when I need it.
Back to phone, I did the silicone mod to the Sensation to keep the dust out because waiting for it to get bad and need a replacement seemed like a dumb plan.
My computer....Linux OS. (I'm sure a good number of us do that one, but damn you Dell and you proprietary wifi drivers that take hours to hack to get working!)
I put a double blade on my mulching lawnmower so it mulches twice as well in half the time.
I couldn't survive without my Logitech Harmony remote for my entertainment system, the one that lets you flash custom button mapping and macros to the remote so single button presses turn on the TV, DVD player, and switch the stereo from Cable to DVD while turning off the DVD player. (Seriously....I could not live without this.)
I have a custom designed Windows 2000 based computer in my car running better GPS software on a 7 inch monitor than you can get in the newest Garmin device. Also runs my music and car diagnosis with an OBII interface into the car's main engine management computer. All with easy and safe to use touchscreen design in front of the shifter. (Emphasis on safe to use) And it looks like it came out of the factory with this computer installed, thank you very much.
You know...this kind of stuff.
So do other people hack everything in their lives? Or just the phone?

Oh yeah, with cars I do it so much more. Aftermarket parts is what I spend a lot of money on, for example this week, I've brought a whole new receiver and headunit for my Ford Explorer, changed all four speakers, bypassed the factory amp and now I have much better sound with more quality bass.
I also had a manual transmission VW Jetta, there was something called the swiss cheese mod, where you cut holes into the intake box so the air filter/intake sucks in more air and gives it an more louder/meaner sound while accelerating.
I've had my fair share of mods, can't remember all, but mostly with cars though. Getting them out of manufacturer specs and taking it to an whole another level.

You sound like my kinda guys. My philosophy is "if you can make it better, what's stopping you?"

GTi = Golf GTi. Generally a sports edition of the platform.

I do the same, mostly with cars. I engine swapped my s10 with a Camaro 350 with cams and big carb, turbo 350 trans, 5 gallon race cell. It was a mean street truck. '87

Money. Takes a good lot of time to pile up for some people

rooting is our life ... joke ...

Naturally! I like to "root" around the house mostly. Make stuff myself instead of hiring people to do it poorly

Unfortunately, as anyone who likes to flash ROM's knows....if you can make it better, tomorrow you can make it even ore better, and even better still the next day....and so on and so forth.
There does come a time when I feel like I spend more time tweaking / building / modifying things than I ever spend actually using them.

Haha, when I had my 2.0 Jetta MKV, I was dying to have mine, look like some on JettaJunkies.
Other than that, I'm disappointed in Logitech for dropping support the Google TV Revue, and not letting devs unlock the bootloader.

So whats up with car mount/holders?

I'am scanning ebay time to time, this one looks pretty nice to me:
http://cgi.ebay.com/M02-Car-Mount-H...wItemQQptZPDA_Accessories?hash=item230520b765
Has anybody tried this or any other solutions?
This is just a car mount.. the Google Car Dock will charge it and put it in some kind of NAV mode I am guessing..
But I am waiting too, much more excited about the car mount over the desktop one they sell.
i'm buying this one when my N1 arrives:
http://www.amzer.com/Amzer-Suction-Cup-Mount-for-Windshield-Dash-or-Console-P86726.htm
I have this one. You will need to modify (Heat and bend, file down slightly with dremmel) to make it work with a hardcase on the phone. I got it to work nicely.
I just bought a random car holder from a store with variable width and it works like a charm, cost like $10.
Might not have a built in charger, but I already have a usb charger for my car so it doesn't really matter.

BEST Phone holder.. BY FAR
bought this to use with my G1 back when the Sprint Hero Nav app was dumped.. used it many times and works excellent with the Nexus One as well ... it rotates landscape and it unclips to use in the dash vent .. i originally wanted it because it doesnt interfere with the touchscreen and its low profile wont let it vibrate too much..and it has a good grasp on the phone without damage (i run a track setup on my suspension with competition spring rates and coilovers.. along with solid engine mounts)

I've been looking for a low profile secure vent mount for my benz. Might check this one out for $15!
Update: Just picked one up at PepBoys for $11.99!
FYI: it's brand name is TypeS Xgrip universal holder & model is AC30267-60/6
Update2: Took it back...way to flimsy!

The title of the lot is written exactly what he sells, in the description of the lot as spelled out in detail the appointment. Not even English-speaking customers convert the text in the description before you buy the lot. Perhaps for this lot are fighting a service company that would purchase description and then make upgrades tablets.
GPS on a 10" tablet? Apart from using it in walking mode, why? It would be useless for a car, it would take up half the windscreen and mopunting at dash level it is going to block off half the controls.

Until you have it in your car you have no idea. I have and it is awesome. Yes I want to get an internal GPS.
I just got my bluetooth gps today...have to try it $20 on ebay. . Right now i use my archos 5 and i'm pretty happy with it. I would think if you drove for a living it would be worth it....but i still think whoever wins this auction is not going to get $150+ worth of anything.
I have tried using google maps with bluetooth gps on the tablet (tethered to my phone) and it is awesome. I would still want an internal gps though.
I prefer the bluetooth gps as you can mount it in the windshield to get good coverage. I don'want my "G" sitting in the windshield too hot and too bright

PLX kiwi bt with Torque??

Anyone use this? I got a check engine light on my 02 toyota so I figured its time to have one of these puppies. Haven't hooked it up but Im looking for folks that have used it with the skyrocket...or really, any phone for that matter.
I don't know anything about the app, sorry.
But just in case you didn't know, AutoZone will check your engine codes for free. Probably other auto parts stores will do the same.

Right but my car is getting close to 100k and I don't really want to have to go down to autozone for the diagnostic every time. I have received the PXL Kiwi bluetooth unit and I must say that Im in love with it. Will go great with my tablet and road trips. Works great with torque free version. I am able to read and clear codes along with monitoring any temp or measure regarding the motor I can think of.

But you'd still have to go to autozone to get the part to fix the check engine light anyway, right? I'm glad you're enjoying your purchase though. Gives me one more thing I want to get.

Well, not really...I can order the part online usually and for a discount most times...but sometimes I end up at pepboys anyways.
On a side note, I replaced the pre cat o2 sensor and now my car stalls idle and keeps going into open loop. The good thing is I can watch whats happening with torque and the obd2 connector so I have an idea what the problem is even though its not throwing a fault code. I did clear the fault code but I didnt reset the ecu. Im thinking it just needs to be reset and re-learn its values.
Yes torque and the cheapo Ebay obd2 adapter work with this phone.

Or use Mobilscan (mobilscan.dk) adapter and software from same company works great on my MR-S
get a vgate adapter from ebay v1.5 for 25-30$ plus the premium otrque app, so for 30$ you get a great system for car diag
http://www.ebay.ca/itm/New-VGate-Mi...t=Motors_Automotive_Tools&hash=item3f0eb88d0a
works perfectly and all sensor work very well, had this for over a year and i dont reget it
OBD-II tool
I bought Torque as soon as it came out and its a great little tool and good fun but if you have serious diagnostic work to do the ScanXL packages are really solid and have licensed support for manufacturer specific PIDs.
A few years ago, before I had an android phone or torque existed. I picked up a scantool.net OBDLink bluetooth/usb adapter - they're a fair bit more expensive than the ebay units, but can read way more PID's per second, which probably isn't useful unless you're running a copy of the ScanXL software.
For day to day stuff Torq + ebay bt adapter make me feel dumb for spending all that cash, ug.
I dunno about the ebay adapter but Im very happy with my plx. Sure I spent more but it got great reviews...maybe the other cheaper ones work but Im happy. Torque just fixed the themes too.

Szsion dual core A9 android 4.2 1024x600 car radios

Szsion (i am not allowed to post links, google it, the first match is the one) produces quite nice android only (no ce) car navis that fit the design of different cars (audi, VW, mercedes, BMW, Kia, opel and many more).
I bought the Audi A3 version which looks quite like my now obsolete audi rns-e navigation plus.
I assume that the radios are technically all the same with different CAM bus boxes on the back and different designs. Sporting MStar SoCs (subsidary of Mediatek) they have a CPU powerful enough for car radio tasks and have a quite nice display.
I am also happy with the radio reception, which is as good as my original audi device. also i bought a realtek based dVB-T stick which enables me to use SDR along with digital radio, tv and FM in even better quality.
Navigation is VERY accurate, I even play ingress on it
The only issues I have at the moment is CAN bus support, which is because I got a pre-sale sample with some firmware problems regarding can bus support and I can't turn display brightness to full at the momenr, but that could be fixed with a new software.
So , do you guys know something about those devices ? Anybody else owns one? I just saw that DX.COM is also selling them, so chances are that I am not the only one with this nice device..

As a trading company selling car multimedia since 2007, we purchased some samples on may 15 ( all with either 8 Gb or 16 Gb storage memory). We are still expecting to see the first units....nothing has been shipped till now....
Also : SION shares it's office address with ZHINAVI, selling same units with another interface....please check what you'll find in XDA forums about this company...I don't want to comment publicly, only in private messages if you want.... For me they are sisters companies, even if SION denies it....I am rather anxious about this....

Don't worry about not getting the devices. They exist
It seems that they are having some trouble with CAN conectivity which they claim is a software issue. I insisted on getting my device anyway and putting on software updates later on. Linkey is very nice if you ask her ...
They could also send me just 4gig model since 8 and 16 are not available yet.
They could, however communicate the problems a little more and not letting us wait 2 months without delivery, a mail saying that it will take some time would be nice...
The launcher they use is very nice, like on the pictures. The cpu is powerful enough for car tasks, gps is awesome. I have the best snr i ever had on any of my android devices.
Dvd playback works, radio is good. As I already said.
Anbody knows a rooting technique that MAY work with the mstar cpu?
I have been following these units as well. I have asked for a video of the interface so that I could see performance. Instead of doing a walk-thru like most companies, I got this, that I uploaded to YouTube.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qHl2ZaDq3iw
I have also asked about unlocking the bootloader. It seems that the manufacture is interested in modifying his code to Android 5.x I told him if he opened up 100% of the source code to XDA, not only would he have a stable build of 5.x, but he would also have the best selling unit on XDA. I havent heard any more back.

Hi Riley!
Do any of your CANBUS features work or is it just the SWC that dors not work?
Also, how happy are you with the display brightness? Mine's way too dim for daylight use. At night, the display is very nice and sharp with beautiful living color, but with sunlight it really sucks so bad you almost can't see anything.
What's your software version?
I forgot to mention how AWESOME it would be to have source code access for this device.
KICK-ASS!
Anybody got an idea how I could try to enhance the display brightness?

I have similar unit for Audi A4 2002 model, rear speakers were not working but got around that by connecting the rear aux outputs left and right to the cables for aux inputs left and right!
I also have trouble with the Canbus support and the LED lights on the unit do not go off when the unit is powered down. Thats not good news for my battery. However the unit is very quick and GPS works smoothly....

Baidu Root works just fine.
The display is not great in the sunlight. I also think the colors are a bit washed out. The radio tries to turn on the back up camera when I go in reverse and the led lights turn off when I turn off the headlights, so I assume the canbus is working. I think the swc is a wire harness issue, I'm going to check it out when I feel brave enough.

Those with Audis, how does the plastic of the radio match the dash?? The HuiFei unit was a glossy and didn't really match the matte factory finish
It looks great against the dash, like it belongs.
Sent from my SCH-I545 using XDA Free mobile app
Side Note... Those with the Audi that are having speaker issues. 99% of the time this is because the right harness combo is not hooked up. I worked in car stereo for years and tell you the Audi harnesses can be tricky. Sometimes you need to have speaker wires only, sometimes you need to use the RCA jack harness, and sometimes you need to use both.
DO NOT PM asking me to help with your car. This is nothing something that can be troubleshot over the internet. Has to be done in person. Your best best is too pull your radio out and the harness, You should have a separate harness that plugs into the back of the radio giving you RCA output. You will need to take these outputs and try plugging into the harness that goes into the car. A combo of these, should cause all speakers to work.
---------- Post added at 10:06 PM ---------- Previous post was at 09:54 PM ----------
One more question for the Audi guys. The 4 buttons around the volume knob. Can you program these to do certain functions? i.e. One to be home, one to be radio, one to GPS, last one to be Google Music for example.
The default is home, gps, secondary menu and radio. I haven't figured out how to change them yet though
Sent from my SCH-I545 using XDA Free mobile app
Ok, it might be a hack to change them then. Im waiting to order mine as the harness shown to come with the radio is not the harness I need for my Audi. Also been told that the new versions work fine with the SWC. Once I see a picture of what harnesses come with the new versions, I will make my final decision.
Anyone want to install CPU-Z to see what the actual hardware specs are??

If you do while on Wi-Fi, online validation will upload the specs and you can share the URL

Interesting it couldnt read the Frequency of the CPU... :-/
You can change the button layout by going to the calculator and type in !(123)= or !(786)=(look what works for you) and then chose the 4th option.
Can anybody share me the gps program they got with there device, mine was navione and its in chinese i dont understand anything of it.

Hmm, tbh I don't use Bluetooth and if I did it would usually be within the range such as car Bluetooth or connect to a speaker. I guess it is a shame they couldn't have put the latest tech in it but it's nothing I'm too concerned with. It having no 3.5mm jack is more concerning but if it has excellent battery then perhaps I won't need to listen to music and charge it so often.
Bluetooth 5.0 is only any good if you are connecting to accessories with 5.0 as well, otherwise it will only be as good as the lowest version of Bluetooth that you are connecting to. But right now I struggle to find any accessories with 5.0. Still would have been nice for future proofing, but I won't lose any sleep over it.

Well there are a lot of benefits to Bluetooth 5 over version 4.2 such as twice the data transfer speed, 4x the range (yes, FOUR... That's 800 feet), enough bandwidth to support two devices at one time, and it'll also help facilitate additional location-based functionality. As for the missing 3.5mm jack HTC has said that an adapter will be sent with the device along with some USB-C headphones that people are claiming to be really good.

The other devices need to be 5.0 to take advantage of the new speed and range, yes, but not everything else.

What is it that you want bluetooth 5 for over, say, 4.2?

That's a big improvement for sure which I was aware of but not the exact figures. The issue of lacking 5.0 really depends on how individuals use their Bluetooth, I never use it so I'm fine. I'm aware of the 3.5 adaptor, I was just saying in my previous post that hopefully the battery will last long enough to listen to music when intended before battery is low. If battery does become low and the USB type c is being used for the headphones than that's a big issue that will definitely be more concerning than not having Bluetooth 5.0. It would be great if they could make an adaptor with a 3.5mm port and charging port next to it, this would solve any battery concerns while listening to music.

I like everything that it offers, but mostly the ability to be connected to two bluetooth devices at once and the increased bandwidth is nothing but good news for audiophiles like myself considering bluetooth has been pretty crappy in terms of quality.

Well, I currently have the HTC 10 that also has a 3,000mAh battery and I have no problem getting a full day's use out of it. The U11 can only get better with the more efficient 835 SoC.

That's great to hear. I'm looking forward to my two year upgrade as my contract ends. I'm overall very impressed with the phone. I have the m9 in case my signature does not mention it. From the reviews, it has the best audio, performance, camera, microphones and should have a good battery endurance.
What about yourself, are you thinking of upgrading to this device and in what's situations do you use Bluetooth?

It's kinda a no-brainer considering I'd get it at $300 off. They sent me an email with a code to take $50 off and with their upgrade program they'll give me $250 for my HTC 10. They will give you money for your M9 as well, but it would likely only be about $100-150. However, I 'm still contemplating on whether I should wait or not because I like the Solar Red color, but it's not currently available for purchase and chances are that in a month or two they may offer $100 off.

To be fair, if you're an audiophile then you should be going wired as the quality will still be superior to BT5. Won't you need to have cans with BT5 to get the full benefit of going wireless?
I'll be making use of the in-box 3.5mm adaptor with amp, but I'll also try out the in-box earbuds as they sound quite interesting (no pun intended).

I understand, but I think Bluetooth 5's capabilities may be enough to push it into the audiophile range and we'll start seeing much better headphones as a result... I guess the real new feature of the the 5.0 standard is the dramatic increase in range. Can you imagine leaving your phone in the car and running around a track with your headphones on, not needing to carry the phone with you?

Lucky you , I'm in UK so will have to check with HTC UK whether they have any deal. I'll be wanting to see them in person before purchasing, the colours are rather unique. I'm feeling kinda excited tbh. I can't wait to try the speakers, camera and performance. Hopefully it's a huge improvement over the m9.

Not really - what if you want to change playlist or send a message to someone? Lol
I agree though, BT5 does have some great benefits but until we see some accessories with BT5 in them then 4.2 does me fine. I reckon it'll probably take a year for BT5 to be more widespread... at which time it'll be time to upgrade to the HTC U12 anyway! Lol

Depends on your phones... with all the personal assistants on the phone and the ability already to change tracks or give verbal commands over bluetooth I don't see how that would be difficult to achieve.

True, but I'm so breathless running round a track that no assistant would make out what I'm trying to say! I also prefer checking my running stats on my phone as you get more detail than on something like a SmartWatch.
I guess it all depends on how you use BT and what you need it for, but I'm happy enough with 4.2 for now. I mainly want it to show metadata for tracks I'm streaming through my car audio... Something my last 2 Samsung's haven't been able to do when every other phone can!

The future is here... there's really no limit. Just because you have no display to look at that doesn't mean you have absolutely no way to get that information by other means. I wouldn't underestimate the capabilities of Google Assistant and Alexa.

OK, so how does GA take my SpO2 levels on my S7 Edge if the phone is in the car? It can't even trigger that if I have the phone in my hand - there is absolutely no way it can do it! It also can't tell me what my different splits are or what route I took or how it compared to my last run... and that's if I use Google Fit, which I don't! There's very little 3rd party app integration at the moment for various reasons - assistant software is very much in its infancy and will need a long time to mature.
There will always be limits and the future, by definition, is never here.
I think we'll have to agree to differ on this one - it sounds like it may meet your needs, but it's a long way from meeting mine.

I'd argue that Alexa is further along, at least when it comes to 3rd party integration. You're also forgetting that with BT 5 you can connect to two devices so you could also wear something with your Sp02 levels if that's really important to you. I think at this point, you're just really grasping at anything to justify BT 5 not being a true upgrade to 4.2
