Update!!! - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket SGH-I727

Check your Skyrockets right now I'm pulling a 20891kb update right now no F'ing joke don't know what it is right will update after its finished!!
Ok so it's just the 2.3.6 update> I guess AT&T is rolling it back out

Not much difference
I got it this morning too. I got a little excited as I thought it might be ICS. Alas, no it's still GB. The only difference I can find is the lock screen is a little different. Anyone else know what the update is?

I got it this morning as well. (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=24399720&postcount=20)
Changes I've seen:
Android: 2.3.6
Baseband: UCLA3
New unlock screen
New phone icon
Other than that, I haven't seen any noticeable changes.
Edit: New incoming call screen as well!

Is it safe to update on stock rooted. I have deleted and frozen some system apps.
EDIT: Nevermind when it said it would reboot to install it booted into CW. I am now reflashing stock 2.3.5 so I can properly OTA to 2.3.6.
EDIT 2: Now I am back on 2.3.5 and checked for update. Says I am up to date. When I tried again it says to check back in 24 hours and does not let me check. Is there a way to force an update? Or could someone pull the update file and share it?

I also think the Memo icon is different.
Maybe the Home/Applications icon? It seems like I see diagonal lines in the blue area...of course maybe that was always there and I just wasn't looking so closely at it.

List of updates from my source at att:
Improved performance from several Qualcomm patches and other refinements.
User interface updates such as the new screen unlock swipe
The ability to reply to all MMS messages.
Exchange ActiveSync wipe to remove all content from the device and microSD card.
Improved battery indicator icon.
So not a major update but still an update nonetheless.

No, its for errybody. Everybody that is stock and can receive OTA's anyway

Well, i did the upgrade nothing fancy, I was on GB2.3.5 and now 2.3.6

does you battery have to be a certain percentage? mine has failed two times already

Another fancy stuff, the sms message indicator, now is in the middle instead of swipe from the right to left, I consider that uglier than the other one from GB2.3.5.

I was rooted, no lagfix when I tried to update. It got to 100% then it said failed. My baseband says I897UCJH7. Kernel 2.6.29 [email protected] #2.
Did the update work or not?
Flashman, how did your OTA update go? Any issues us rooted/unlocked folks should be worried about?
My instinct is to delay the update until I stop seeing posts about hot it F'd up people's phones.

If you rooted and removed anything from stock rom, you're pretty much guaranteed to fail on OTA update. In order to make the OTA download package as small as possible, Samsung uses a diff patch based on the bit differences between stock JF6 image and new JH7 image. So, if you touched the JF6 in any unauthorized way, the patch won't work.
Luckily, you can now use the newly released Kies Mini to do a full ROM update which should be more reliable as you have the entire ROM image downloaded to your desktop and then flash to your phone.

Do you have TouchWiz as your default launcher? and make sure you're on your home screen when you connect your USB cable.
If that doesn't do it you need to get back to JF6 only way or another because Mini Kies will continue to tell you that you have an "unregistered" device until it is at JF6
The reason is because your update failed partially :/
are you guys talking about a new update or just JH7?
We're talking about JH7, some people are still having difficulties getting it on their phone as the OTA is still failing - and if you've failed the OTA you need to reflash to stock before mini kies will work.
when i did the update i was rooted an it didn't fail on install or bootup or anything.

[Q] New Firmware is available - OK for rooted GT6210-WiFi only?

I have tried to locate this question, but I can not find it on here, so here goes.
I have a rooted GT6210 WiFi only.
Kies shows:
Current firmware version: PDA:KL1 / CSC:KL1 (XAR)
Latest firmware version: PDA:LA3 / CSC:LA3 (XAR)
Is this OK to update, or leave it be?
Thanks.
Looked this up on google and found your thread. Wondering the same thing. Ill update this if I figure it out.
On my tab with KL2 it's only a small 8mb update to fix 'stability issues'
I haven't updated yet as it won't let me flash due to low battery
This being pushed out via OTA?
Sent from my GT-P6210 using xda premium
If all you've done is root, it should work but you might lose root. If you have a modified firmware or CWM recovery installed, it probably won't work and you'll have to use Odin to get back to stock.
You will lose root. Flashed via Kies yesterday. Re-rooted and re-installed CWM.
No worries.
Please make a CWM backup and upload the system backup. Just the system file... not data (data has personal info)
Thanks

Have you tried it? I don't have the update, so I have no idea. I'm trying to get someone who has already installed it to do a CWM Recovery backup and upload some of the files from it (so I can check compatibility.)
The firmware /system tree contains kernel modules, so if they rebuilt the kernel for that build, then there's a chance that wifi wouldn't load with my kernel.
CWM Recovery backups have some files that would help me:
"boot.img" is the kernel image
system.ext4.tar is the /system tree. This file contains NO user information, but contains what people here on XDA like to call the "ROM." It's the entire android system outside of recovery and the kernel.
Take care
Gary
Well if it worked I would try but alas I'm still waiting for samsung to give me my tablet back from having those issues I was having a couple weeks ago with having a bunch of errors in recovery and not being able to boot. I'm just asking since when I get it back I hope to be able to use your wonderful kernal again
Here's the boot image and link for dropbox for the system file.
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/60666140/system.zip
About an hour left on the upload...slow DSL
Thanks,
Jason
nevermind, folks.. I went ahead and installed the update on my own 6210. Give me a week or two to get things sorted out.
Oh.. and the update installs via the bootloader, so it will work fine regardless of any recovery, rooting, etc.
However, it'll overwrite root, recovery, etc.
Take care
Gary

So far, I see nothing different. Even the ar6000.ko module has the old kernel's version string embedded (although there is a binary difference between the old and new module, they appear to have compiled it again the older kernel and haven't updated any version strings.)
---------- Post added at 01:32 AM ---------- Previous post was at 01:08 AM ----------
UNTIL I POST THAT IT WILL WORK WITH THE LA3 FIRMWARE UPDATE, DO NOT INSTALL MY KERNEL IF YOU'VE UPDATED YOUR FIRMWARE.
The tablet will boot just fine, but the wifi module won't load (meaning you won't have any wireless.)
I'll be updating the kernel thread with a proper warning...
Take care

I do not understand you. Why should it not be ok to install the new firmware that kies offers you?
Just Updated via KIES...
and lost root, etc but rerooted and installed CWM per Garyd9's " [GT-P6210][CWMRecovery][ROOT] ClockworkMod Recovery and Root (07-Jan-2012)" - no issues.
Following are just qualitative observations:
I use TouchWiz as my launcher and it's definitely smoother and seems faster, particularly when scrolling between screens.
The whole tablet seems to execute operations faster - particularly when opening/closing app drawer.
I see that my display timeout settings appear to be retained though it may be too early to tell. One of my pet peeves is that Android (or maybe Samsung) likes to reset the timeout to one minute irrespective of a user selected setting - this seems to happen after the Tab sleeps. Maybe this is one of the software fixes??? but I will report after a while.
Garyd9: if there is a dump that you can use I can do it - just tell me what youi want.
I have same setup, lost root but just re-rooted and works fine.
Is kies supposed to find the update automatically? When I connect via Kies nothing happens and when I manually check for an update it says than no updates are available.
Nevermind, kies just found it and is auto-installing....

[Q] Effect of latest OTA update on rooted/s-off 1.44.0007?

Hubby's MT4GS is hboot 1.44.0007, rooted & s-off through Revolutionary. Recently he received an update notification for the latest OTA from T-Mobile (at least I'm assuming it's that--software version 1.63.531.2). Since the notification can't be dismissed and is annoying him somewhat, I wanted to know what the overall effect would be if I applied this 55.36 MB update.
To be more specific, would the phone lose root? If so, method to regain? Would s-off be reversed? With this phone being s-off, could I flash the 1.63.531.2 stock ROM instead of using the OTA? But then there's the question of would doing the latter resolve the notification that is the crux of all this?
Apologies--it's late and I feel like I'm tangling up what I'm trying to ask. Hopefully, I haven't completely confused the issue. Thanks in advance for any recommendations and advice.
Off to bed for now --

It is never a good idea to let an OTA update run on a rooted phone. Most likely if you let it attempt, the update would fail very quickly anyway, without causing any damage. If you want to update to the latest stock ROM, it is easily done by grabbing one of the available stock roms in the dev section. My phone is rooted and s-off and I am now running the 1.63.531.2 stock ROM that I have since debloated a bit. It is extremely stable, fast, and battery-efficient, and everything works as it should.
There are several threads here on updating to the latest stock rom, you will not lose S-OFF and you can easily unlock it using the HTCDEV unlock took and then root it.
just run a rom based off latest ota or he could disable the update notifications

I've turned off the HTC software update under Settings ¦ About phone, but the OTA update notification persists. Also, there doesn't appear any way to dismiss it--the dismiss notifications button isn't available in the notifications panel to clear the icon.
It looks like the only means to get rid of the notification is to flash a 1.63.531.2 ROM, but it needs to be stock as hubby likes it that way. Now I just need to find one. It's often difficult to drill down and find stock ROMs as they tend to be hidden within a thread titled for another subject. I'd greatly appreciate any recommendations.

I really really appreciate this link! Initially, I didn't think it would be that helpful as I don't have Titanium Backup on either of our phones, and didn't want to purchase it just for freezing this one problem system app. Happily, Darken added app freezing to the latest version of SD Maid, and it worked like a charm--annoying notification is gone, hubby is pleased, and I can put off ROM flashing to another day when I'm not swamped with other projects.

OTA for Verizon?

When I go to manually update my phone, I'm getting an OTA update.
Anyone know what the update is? I'm rooted so I can't install it and clicking the learn more link takes me to a dead website.
im downloading now, not rooted.
Edit: Just states enhancements and improvements. android version : still 5.0.2 / build number : LRX22G. G920VVRU1A0E2
Tried to update and it failed on me. Can't get it to go again.
Edit: Tried the update again and it worked.
I just updated mine successfully and all it showed was.. "Software updated to G925VVRU1AOE2" The link to "Learn More Online" was to a 404 page
Apparently this is what the updated is, but I can't update cuz I'm rooted
http://www.droid-life.com/2015/06/0...rst-update-with-hd-voice-photo-editor-tweaks/
The ram management seems to be a bit better now, will have to see if the battery life especially on wifi has improved.
I don't think it's worth going through unrooting process. The updates are minor.
Just wait till one of the ROM's are updated and flash that.
Has anyone taken the update and still was able to root?

Nothing I see is worth the update. I've turned off HD Voice...that seems to be one of the major battery drains. Ill wait till others download and see if there is an improvement
The release notes seem to have a different FW version AOD5 rather than AOE2 which is the actual OTA.
It should still be rootable if it matches other AOE2 ROMs from other carriers but only time will tell.
There is a download on Samsung-Updates of the Full TAR.
my 2 cents
The root app has to be updated with this update if you flash this you will not be able to root until pingpong updates it just a warning I took the plunge.

You can download it here and use Odin but if you are rooted wait for a rooted ROM or you risk loosing root.

I'm kinda new to samsung phones, if I flash the stock tar file it'll erase my phone right?

Optimizing now.
"One of the new features gives you the ability to make drawings in the photo editor. There are also some layout changes to HD Voice Calling options.
Besides those minor additions, the update also exterminates some bugs that have afflicted the two models. "
