When I go to manually update my phone, I'm getting an OTA update.
Anyone know what the update is? I'm rooted so I can't install it and clicking the learn more link takes me to a dead website.
im downloading now, not rooted.
Edit: Just states enhancements and improvements. android version : still 5.0.2 / build number : LRX22G. G920VVRU1A0E2
Tried to update and it failed on me. Can't get it to go again.
Edit: Tried the update again and it worked.
I just updated mine successfully and all it showed was.. "Software updated to G925VVRU1AOE2" The link to "Learn More Online" was to a 404 page
Apparently this is what the updated is, but I can't update cuz I'm rooted
http://www.droid-life.com/2015/06/0...rst-update-with-hd-voice-photo-editor-tweaks/
The ram management seems to be a bit better now, will have to see if the battery life especially on wifi has improved.
I don't think it's worth going through unrooting process. The updates are minor.
Just wait till one of the ROM's are updated and flash that.
Has anyone taken the update and still was able to root?

Nothing I see is worth the update. I've turned off HD Voice...that seems to be one of the major battery drains. Ill wait till others download and see if there is an improvement
The release notes seem to have a different FW version AOD5 rather than AOE2 which is the actual OTA.
It should still be rootable if it matches other AOE2 ROMs from other carriers but only time will tell.
There is a download on Samsung-Updates of the Full TAR.
my 2 cents
The root app has to be updated with this update if you flash this you will not be able to root until pingpong updates it just a warning I took the plunge.

You can download it here and use Odin but if you are rooted wait for a rooted ROM or you risk loosing root.

Optimizing now.
"One of the new features gives you the ability to make drawings in the photo editor. There are also some layout changes to HD Voice Calling options.
Besides those minor additions, the update also exterminates some bugs that have afflicted the two models. "

Not much difference
I got it this morning too. I got a little excited as I thought it might be ICS. Alas, no it's still GB. The only difference I can find is the lock screen is a little different. Anyone else know what the update is?

I got it this morning as well. (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=24399720&postcount=20)
Changes I've seen:
Android: 2.3.6
Baseband: UCLA3
New unlock screen
New phone icon
Other than that, I haven't seen any noticeable changes.
Edit: New incoming call screen as well!
Is it safe to update on stock rooted. I have deleted and frozen some system apps.
EDIT: Nevermind when it said it would reboot to install it booted into CW. I am now reflashing stock 2.3.5 so I can properly OTA to 2.3.6.
EDIT 2: Now I am back on 2.3.5 and checked for update. Says I am up to date. When I tried again it says to check back in 24 hours and does not let me check. Is there a way to force an update? Or could someone pull the update file and share it?

I also think the Memo icon is different.
Maybe the Home/Applications icon? It seems like I see diagonal lines in the blue area...of course maybe that was always there and I just wasn't looking so closely at it.

List of updates from my source at att:
Improved performance from several Qualcomm patches and other refinements.
User interface updates such as the new screen unlock swipe
The ability to reply to all MMS messages.
Exchange ActiveSync wipe to remove all content from the device and microSD card.
Improved battery indicator icon.
So not a major update but still an update nonetheless.

All,
I'm on the fense with rooting and removing Carrier IQ and installing Greenify. What happens when there is a OTA update on our phones? Can I still install it? Obviously I know any updates, there is a chance it will kill the root but I'm more worried about being able to update the phone.
On a side note, what's up with the development of ROM's for this phone? This is the first phone I ever had where I have not seen much ROM's for it.
Thanks all!

The development of the the phone is so slow right not because the bootloader is unlocked. There is a bounty for the unlocked bootloader to be achieved but it has not been solved yet. If there is an OTA update for the phone, someone correct me if im wrong but I think you would have to go back stock and then re-root the device. I could be wrong though. Yeah I understand that you want to keep the phone up to date but I know updates will come very slow if its anything like the G2. I prefer root, debloated, carrier delete, and Greenufy any day over rare OTA's.

Trust and believe me I have the same itch! lol. Every android device that I have ever owned has been rooted within the first week of owning it. I honestly try to not root and leave it as is but then again I cant't help it and have been using a good amount of tweaks that I cant go without for the most part. But with the changes with root that I said above and running Nova Launcher, I have no complaints right now.
Here's what i'm wondering. Will i need to reinstall the stock rom before i update? I debloated with titanium so my rom no longer has a bunch of files from the factory rom.
I hope LG is fast than last time with the updates though. Their history with updates made me very weary of this device.

Agreed, my guess is that we will see a bootloader unlock well in advance of an OTA from LG. There is not a tremendous amount of change that 4.4.3 or 4.4.4 could really deliver that the LG overlay does not do already (stock) in many ways. There are obviously features that 4.4.4 has we do not with LG's 4.4.2 overlay; but not a ton from a casual day-to-day view.

No, i didn't. that would have been smart though. I'm not used to using a rooted rom without custom roms haha.
To take an OTA after rooting all you need to do is unroot through SuperSU and take the update. If you don't see the update after unrooting, do a factory restore. Its simple. You don't have to flash a stock firmware to update.

I am excited about Android L as well and cant wait for it lol.
As to the Op's question, I am a bit more cautious about taking ota updates some. If I choose to update I usually unroot, and undo any changes I've made to the system such as xposed modules and xposed framework, and revert any build prop changes, then take the OTA.

So if i have a modified stock rom right now i should be able to simply unroot and then take the update even though i am missing files from the original factory rom? I don't think i've ever taken an OTA in my life since i always flash through recovery.

Did anyone else get a pop-up for a new OTA update today? I'm running NI2 and the new one looks to be NK2. Google doesn't return much in the way of results for something coming today/recently. There's not much on Verizon's site either: http://www.verizonwireless.com/dam/support/pdf/system_update/benefits-galaxy-s5-12-16-14.pdf All it lists is a VPN fix, SD card fix, and replacing ISIS with Softcard. It does not appear to be Lollipop
Hopefully flashing the kernel to NCG rooting and then returning to the current kernel still will work. I can download the files if someone can explain how to extract the kernel.
I too just received this update. Going to wait don't want to lose root
I got the update and applied it. Lost root (knew I would), but everything else seems fine.
I don't know how to extract the kernel though. Hopefully others take notice and help you or just provide the process and files for the masses.

use terminal emulator or adb (just need root) - for system and kernel dump
Code:
su
dd if=dev/block/mmcblk0p15 of=/mnt/sdcard/boot.img
dd if=dev/block/mmcblk0p23 of=/mnt/sdcard/system.img
Seems to be a small and non-critical update. I'll probably skip on this and wait for lollipop.

I've had a few skips here and there, but occurances vary greatly depending on the app, BT device, and distance. 90%, though, is problem free.
I just updated lost root of course, used the towleroot/odin flash method and put the NI2 kernal back on, phone says I am still up to date with NK2, and finds no new updates. Not sure if this is actually the case, I am still new to all of this. But I do have root access back now so..
you would have to odin back to ncg kernal, root then odin nk2 kernel back once and if its available
---------- Post added at 08:40 PM ---------- Previous post was at 08:37 PM ----------
if u odin ni2 and still shows nk2 then it probably didnt work.. either way, you need to wait until someone puts out the kernal for nk2 or else u might as well stay on nk2 or just go back to ncg root install ss then flash rom of choice and then kernal of choice lol. im content where im at especially when theres no big changes at all
been waiting for this just for the SD card fix ever since the verizon tech's told me it was coming, hopefully they really did fix it.
Now the anxious waiting for it to get posted since I can't do OTA from Canada.
I will wait for it to be rootable, as I'm not willing to lose that.
That said, I've been waiting to be able to use OpenVPN over 4G/3G since I got the phone, so if this fixes the issue, it's definitely worth the update for me. I still can't believe it's taken them this long to fix the freaking issue...

It won't be rootable, as the past 2 updates haven't been rootable. As long as you can downgrade to NCG, that's your root method right there. You won't be able to root the new updates as they stand.

If I "No thanks" the OTA for the time being it's not going to download and install behind my back is it?

I had a bad experience with a s4 I had once where it jumped on without my giving it the okay. What firmware are you on? It doesn't take but a couple of minutes to root.

OC3. I know but I use my phone a LOT for work and need tethering to work more than anything else and already have foxfi working alright while being without root which is good enough for the time being......not sure how to set it (tethering) up once I am rooted without digging into XDA some more to find out.
Plus I have to set up all my apps again coming from my S3, and settings and such.

That's cool. Need time for that. OC3 roots the easiest but OE2 is easy too. Just one more step.
Here is what you need to get native tethering to work when you are ready.

If you're rooted just delete update.zip from /cache/fota/
And/Or
you could try on unrooted/rooted devices going to Settings>application manager>all>Google play services and untick "Show Notifications"

Should I take the OTA to OE2 first before root? Just worried it'll OTA straight to OF1 and skip OE2 then I'd be screwed. (Actually started a thread on that: http://forum.xda-developers.com/veri...o-of1-t3176197)

Have you ever used odin? You could update manually. Or use smartswitch. I always use custom roms myself. Most of those have tethering enabled built in.

I've never used SmartSwitch before. Have used Odin a few times in the past but definitely wouldn't call myself "savvy" with it. On your link whats the difference between "Stock OE2 Tar" and "OE2 Retail Firmware" ?
The entire rooting process on the S6 freaks me out more than than the S3 simply because the battery is sealed and can't pull it if I need to....

The firmware one is like an update. I've never used smartswitch but it is supposed to be a safe way to update. There is kies too.
Rooting the S6 is simple and safe in my opinion. Ping-pong is a snap. No need for a computer. Instead of pulling the battery, you can always go into maintenance mode to reboot or turn off your phone. Just like going into download mode (except your phone is still on) you hold the volume down-home-power buttons for about ten seconds and let go. Gunthermic has a rooted rom that is stock deodexed that is really nice. Misterxtc has an OC3 and OE2 roms. You need to install flashfire. That is our only way to flash roms or mods. It works great (also does backups).
Hey everyone,
So I found online that the AT&T update to Marshmellow started on 2-8-16. I haven't been able to find anything officially from AT&T but apperently the version is H81020n and its 971 MB. Has anyone gotten the update yet?
Just saw this thread and figured I'd check. Went into the update center and notification popped up for new 950mb update. Must be it cause I was already on 10o. Didn't even have to use LG Bridge like the other carrier guys were doing.
Will post back with an update once completed

It's official now. You can check it at http://www.att.com/esupport/article...are&siteId=JAF5WzpxbKM-2ZjtzA2obzUjSzdgu.LzJA
I just wonder if I can update via LG Bridge without an AT&T sim since I bought a second hand one and don't have AT&T sim now.

I would have done this but didn't even think about it when I saw the update come through. Was happy to finally be getting 6.0
Hopefully somebody else can help you with that.
I fell asleep during the update process but just finished running the Debloater tool and getting rid of all the att/lg junk! So far so good. Will be keeping an eye on battery life over the next couple days.

Debloater does not need root as long as you are running KitKat or newer :good:. Without root it just freezes/disables the apps instead of completely removing them.
edit : these are the apps i block using debloater without losing any functionality i need : http://pastebin.com/d64Vydmy

tried, it doesn't show up in my logcat. sorry
So, and I apologize if this is a stupid question, will Chainfire's advances in the systemless SuperSU help us when it comes to rooting Marshmallow on our H810?
can we update AT&T phone OTA outside the US without at&t sim card???

not possible. you can't modify the system files and boot without a modified kernel. We don't have an unlocked bootloader, so no kernels, thus no root.
if you root MM your phone will just loop without the custom kernel.
---------- Post added at 03:58 PM ---------- Previous post was at 03:40 PM ----------
so the file it downloaded isn't a zip... it's just 'dlpkgfile'
7zip can open it but there's a similar file inside and that one can't be opened.... dunno.

That's the missing piece I needed to understand. Thanks! Sucks, but thanks! :highfive:
got it! looks good to me - so far...
I upgraded early yesterday morning and my phone has been hot almost all the time!! The battery life is way worse than prior to the upgrade. I have cleaned out all my junk files and cache rebooted and recharged a few times. Also optimized my apps a few times. I just picked up my phone after 2 hours of no use and it was warm and the battery is draining at a faster rate than with Lollipop... Anybody else experiencing this?
Awesome, glad the update is out....I haven't done the update just yet...waiting to see if we hear anything about root. I'm wondering if we are still able to downgrade via TOT method if need be...if that's the case then i'll update ASAP. I actually have heard that there are some battery issues with the update, but again I'm not on 6.0 yet so I can't tell you from my experience.
2 questions
So their is no root ?
Also can I just unistall SuperSU and update or do I need to wait tell I'm home and flash a clean image

No root.
I've never managed to update w/o flashing the unrooted version of whatever rooted version I'm running. If there's an easier way, I'm not aware of it.
