[Q] New Firmware is available - OK for rooted GT6210-WiFi only? - Samsung Galaxy Tab Plus

I have tried to locate this question, but I can not find it on here, so here goes.
I have a rooted GT6210 WiFi only.
Kies shows:
Current firmware version: PDA:KL1 / CSC:KL1 (XAR)
Latest firmware version: PDA:LA3 / CSC:LA3 (XAR)
Is this OK to update, or leave it be?
Thanks.

Looked this up on google and found your thread. Wondering the same thing. Ill update this if I figure it out.

On my tab with KL2 it's only a small 8mb update to fix 'stability issues'
I haven't updated yet as it won't let me flash due to low battery

This being pushed out via OTA?
Sent from my GT-P6210 using xda premium

If all you've done is root, it should work but you might lose root. If you have a modified firmware or CWM recovery installed, it probably won't work and you'll have to use Odin to get back to stock.

You will lose root. Flashed via Kies yesterday. Re-rooted and re-installed CWM.
No worries.

Please make a CWM backup and upload the system backup. Just the system file... not data (data has personal info)
Thanks
Gary

FYI: The "LA" in "LA3" designates that this is from January 2012. (based on information taken from samfirmware.com.) I'm not sure what the "3" is... probably some build number - but may be a week number (I really don't know.)

You can't use garys kernal with this update can you...

Have you tried it? I don't have the update, so I have no idea. I'm trying to get someone who has already installed it to do a CWM Recovery backup and upload some of the files from it (so I can check compatibility.)
The firmware /system tree contains kernel modules, so if they rebuilt the kernel for that build, then there's a chance that wifi wouldn't load with my kernel.
CWM Recovery backups have some files that would help me:
"boot.img" is the kernel image
system.ext4.tar is the /system tree. This file contains NO user information, but contains what people here on XDA like to call the "ROM." It's the entire android system outside of recovery and the kernel.
Take care
Gary

Well if it worked I would try but alas I'm still waiting for samsung to give me my tablet back from having those issues I was having a couple weeks ago with having a bunch of errors in recovery and not being able to boot. I'm just asking since when I get it back I hope to be able to use your wonderful kernal again

Here's the boot image and link for dropbox for the system file.
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/60666140/system.zip
About an hour left on the upload...slow DSL
Thanks,
Jason

nevermind, folks.. I went ahead and installed the update on my own 6210. Give me a week or two to get things sorted out.
Oh.. and the update installs via the bootloader, so it will work fine regardless of any recovery, rooting, etc.
However, it'll overwrite root, recovery, etc.
Take care
Gary

So far, I see nothing different. Even the ar6000.ko module has the old kernel's version string embedded (although there is a binary difference between the old and new module, they appear to have compiled it again the older kernel and haven't updated any version strings.)
---------- Post added at 01:32 AM ---------- Previous post was at 01:08 AM ----------
UNTIL I POST THAT IT WILL WORK WITH THE LA3 FIRMWARE UPDATE, DO NOT INSTALL MY KERNEL IF YOU'VE UPDATED YOUR FIRMWARE.
The tablet will boot just fine, but the wifi module won't load (meaning you won't have any wireless.)
I'll be updating the kernel thread with a proper warning...
Take care
Gary

I do not understand you. Why should it not be ok to install the new firmware that kies offers you?

Just Updated via KIES...
and lost root, etc but rerooted and installed CWM per Garyd9's " [GT-P6210][CWMRecovery][ROOT] ClockworkMod Recovery and Root (07-Jan-2012)" - no issues.
Following are just qualitative observations:
I use TouchWiz as my launcher and it's definitely smoother and seems faster, particularly when scrolling between screens.
The whole tablet seems to execute operations faster - particularly when opening/closing app drawer.
I see that my display timeout settings appear to be retained though it may be too early to tell. One of my pet peeves is that Android (or maybe Samsung) likes to reset the timeout to one minute irrespective of a user selected setting - this seems to happen after the Tab sleeps. Maybe this is one of the software fixes??? but I will report after a while.
Garyd9: if there is a dump that you can use I can do it - just tell me what youi want.

I have same setup, lost root but just re-rooted and works fine.

Is kies supposed to find the update automatically? When I connect via Kies nothing happens and when I manually check for an update it says than no updates are available.
Nevermind, kies just found it and is auto-installing....

[SYSTEM] De-Odex Framework / System [No-Wipe]

Currently designed for the Wifi version only. Alternates available upon request.
This package includes the de-odexed system and framework folder based on a wifi model.
This is NOT a full install, so do NOT wipe before using.
This package is designed to be used with the custom recovery image. This will NOT work with Odin.
This will delete the current system and framework folders and flash the new ones in their place. This is only a temporary solution until a full rooted install is established.

Request!
My Verizon GC120 should be here in a couple of days. As far as I know it is untouched stock. Let me know the commands to pull the files you need for this and the other dev work you are doing.
Thank you for taking the time to do the work! We all appreciate it!
Finally received a GC120 camera I can do something with. Attached are the .img files pulled. About says my phone is on 4.1.2 (LK3) but I keep getting an install update request although the folder titled as the update in /cache is empty (so there's nothing I can pull from that).
I also pulled the modem.bin but it says invalid file when I try to upload.
*These are the files for LK3
Camera updated to LL2. Updated files attached.
MC4 files attached
So maybe I screwed myself updating all the way to MK4 update. Can't root using framaroot now like I did with all the others. Gonna try a few other options.
Can someone please tell me the adb command to find whether a bootloader is locked or not? I have tried several I've found online and don't receive anything conclusive. Thanks.
Be back in a week or so. Final project is in the beta test stage so I am swamped until it reaches the release candidate.

I dug through everything I have but no efs.img and if I remember right, you'd need one with your IMEI. Best bet is probably a factory reset.
Didn't help... tried factory reset with stock recovery and cwm recovery... nothing helps... i don't know a way to get it fixed... will keep looking...
Finally got it fixed. As GC100 is similar to S3, downloaded efs file for S3 flashed it via odin through bootloader and voila... attaching the file for reference if anyone else gets into trouble!

Didnt know there was an ND5. There wasnt even an ND5 when I downloaded the kernel source code from samsung. And nope, There like 2 knox files in the entire firmwares which is just left behind crap I believe. Absolutely does not give you a knox bootloader and crap tho. Do make sure your tablet is a T230NU model and not just a T230 model.
Thanks a lot for this. So if I'm rooted and want to install system updates I would first backup data to sd card via titanium ,(or to pc?) , then factory restore via settings, Odin with this firmware, install updates, then vroot + terminal supersu, then restore backups.... correct? I'm still trying to figure out what bloatware is safe to remove...a guide on how to clean a out of the box tab 4 7.0 would be greatly appricated....
Will this Root my T230NU?
Hi, I am new to the Android market and I was wondering if this "stock" image will root my Samsung Galaxy 4 T230NU.
I am a formerly iDevice owner and I am quite familiar with Jailbreaking.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Hello Ed,
I'm kind of new as well however I can tell you that this process will not root it. In my case, because I updated the software I had to use the stock Rom in order to downgrade and then root it. ShinySide explains the.. Rooting procedure in another post
thanks!

I just used these links to download the firmware and they worked great. Mega took 1/3 as much time to pull from as Sammobile. Thank you Shinyside! You are awesome. If I wasn't a broke college kid I'd would def donate.

So I rooted my Tab 4 7" and then decided to switch to Nexus 7 and sell my Tab 4. Both great devices but the specs and updates draw me to try Nexus after the Tab. Anyway, I went to Sammobile to get the Stock rom and inadvertently ended up with the Nook version. OOOPS. Had to reflash but the second firmware I downloaded from Sammobile (at about 1 hour each, ugh) kept failing. Even after wiping the Cache and resetting I could not flash with Odin. Tried placing the image on the SD and installing in Recovery and still no luck. Then I turned to the ONLY source for self support of Android and found ShinySide with the stuff I needed. Downloaded with the Mega link which took 20+ min instead of an hour and it flashed straight away and my Tab 4 is back to being a Tab 4 instead of a Nook. Just wanted to give props to ShinySide for his efforts on behalf of the community and his patience to put up with noobs even when they do/say silly stuff!
Thank you so much!!
Ive been trying to download this file from all these crappy sites and they keep timing out thank you so much.

HI so i tried installing twrp recovery for my SM-t230NU And it got stuck in bootloop after trying to load custom recovery. Not a single Tar file md5 file worked until i got this rom and USED odin to install it. Odin just kept crashing on me till I got here and used the md5 file provided. It pushed the files while in download mode and rebooted and even still had all my apps and email going.
Again thank you so much and please reply if you have the same device and need help. I thought i bricked my Christmas present.

[How-To] Enable Native Tethering (I337 4.4.2 - Stock NI1, NB1, & NC1 ROM's Only)

The following files will enable tethering on your I337. Make certain that you use the version applicable to your current build and only use on stock ROM. Use on custom ROM's may cause issues with the ROM. Proceed at your own risk!
Note: This will modify your system causing future ota updates to fail!
Here they are:
I337UCUFNI1_Safestrap_TetherAddOn.zip
(To undo the mod flash the I337_NI1_TetherAddOn_Revert-to-Stock.zip using the same instructions below).
I337UCUFNC1_Safestrap_TetherAddOn.zip
I337UCUFNB1_Safestrap_TetherAddOn.zip
Instructions:
1. Root your device(See Post #2 for rooting options).
2. Install the latest Safestrap.apk.
3. Place the applicable Safestrap_TetherAddOn.zip on ext sdcard.
4. Reboot into Safestrap Recovery and flash the Safestrap_TetherAddOn.zip in Stock Slot (Do Not Wipe Prior to Flashing!)
5. Reboot. Done!
NI1, NC1 & NB1 Rooting Methods
NI1 Users: http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s4-att/general/how-to-root-i337ucufni1-t2881298
NC1 Users: Use Towelroot.apk
NB1 Users: Flash the NC1_Stock_Kernel in PDA Slot in Odin(AP in Odin v3.09+), then use Towelroot.apk to root your device. (Optional: flash the NB1_Stock_Kernel once rooted).
Alternatively, flash the I337UCUFNB1_4.4_Rootable_Stock_Odin_tar to get back to factory stock NB1 then use Towelroot.apk to root your device.

Most custom roms already offer tethering built in. Also they may already have a modified framework-res.apk(which these files replace) and may cause issues. So to answer your question I recommend only using this hack on stock.
I have an att i337 stock mf3, rooted using towel and su access. unlocked sim using tmo sim, which file should i download? also im on 4.2.2.. or if i update to atleast 4.3 with the newer modem will that fix this problem?

I'm surprised that you are one of the few that still has att i337 mf3 phone. if so, stay on it, root it and disable the update. else, you'll lost pretty much everything unless something else happen. however, the only thing i can recommend is that you follow another guide that can do it or use foxfi and the paid key.
Holy crap dude! Super cool! If only I didn't have a faulty motherboard everything would be almost perfect, only thing I I'm missing is wifi calling but whatever. I'm gonna have to live without it cause the tmobile roms just don't work for me. Thanks so much man! Hey you think tmobile detects this? I have 3gb free a month.

Awesome, installed without issues.
The connection does appear to be quite a bit slower than using the previous theringprovision.apk with 4.2.2.

Nope just flash over previous version.
Flashing it now, I'll get you an update in the morning.
Edit: Seems quite a bit faster after flashing the new file.
I wish I had done a speed test first but the results below are from my second install
36.64Mb down 12.95 up.
Once I rebooted I got the message "Safestrap disabled"
is that ok? I noticed the security policy in the 4.4.2 update with Samsung seems to like the ban hammer with alot of rooted stuff.

I don't know what kind of LTE speeds you normally get in your location but those speeds that you posted are more than decent. And I wouldn't worry about the safestrap disabled message, that's normal. I definitely made a mistake when compiling the first version of the tether add on but this latest version is definitely correct enjoy.

Installed TWRP on StraightTalk SCH-S968C Samsung Galaxy S III - now no OS! - resolved

I have a rooted StraightTalk SCH-S968C Samsung Galaxy S III (with the stock AOSP ROM) that I just screwed up. I had used EZ-Recovery to flash TWRP 2.2.0 to the phone. Now TWRP says there is no OS! I can only boot into TWRP - nothing else. It won't even let me power-down the phone. Is there some way I can recover from this, or do I now have a very expensive electronic brick (that runs TWRP)? I have adb installed on my laptop and I know it works, so that's one possible route to recovery. Any help would be much appreciated!

That's the file I am offering to host on my Website, since nobody seems to be able to download it from Dropbox. I'm having trouble downloading it from Mega... Since the file is over 1 GB, Mega insisted I needed to download their extension, but it's not compatible with Firefox 22. I tried Chrome, and Mega says that Chrome on my laptop is "a bit outdated"... sheesh! I'll try and update it.
(added later) - I found a Dropbox link for the file and it's downloading now.
If you want to FTP the file to my Website, let me know by PM and I'll give you the username and password.
I tried using fastboot to install CWM Recovery, but fastboot is eternally "waiting for device" even though it's there (adb can see it).
Aug. 7 - Got the file I needed, but didn't use it since Windows7 would not recognize the phone even after I installed the drivers. (I think it was an issue with automatic updates being disabled...) In the meantime... I tried the button-combo for the bootloader (which I swore I tried the day before and it didn't work), and the phone booted into the bootloader! From there, I pressed "Volume down" to cancel & reboot the phone, and it went into the stock system - it was all still there! First thing I did was immediately use EZ-Recovery to flash CWM 5.8.4.5. - Issue resolved!

In that thread go down to method 2 of getting a custom recovery. I downloaded cwm touch from the link there and then installed it with android terminal emulator using the codes that it says to type in. I tried to look up that stock rom but I didnt find it. Its on the forum somewhere in a thread about how to root the straight talk s3 and how first you need to download and flash the h1 baseband stock rom
Thanks I found the stock rom fixing it now.

Have you gotten recovery installed and straightened out yet?
Let me know if you need some help, tell me where you're at and what you've got going on with what you have.
I returned phone to stock. The recovery wasn't in the right place obviously. So that's where I am . Stuck back at stock. Thanks for any help you can give.

Are you on stock not rooted or you are rooted?
Do you have stock recovery or custom.
I can get you to wherever you need or want. Tell me what you need or where you'd like to be.

I have combined 2 s3's to make one good one. This is the proper thread for the model of the chipset. The phone has been worked on buy someone who only thought they were a genious. I've found traces and from surfing the forums I'm pretty sure I know what they did even. I'm gonna grab these stock images and flash back to stock. I just wanted to put a word in now to see how dead this thread is. BTW just for the record easy safe root is achievable with safroot for Att g s 4. I've confirmed that. Root is no issue. Modem drivers are jacked up. I want what I have now with WiFi in tact and custom recovery. Just wanted to get the word in in case I hit a wall with recovery as I am now before the flash to stock. Thanks in advance for any help. Sorry for the ramble

New Update for Verizon S5 (NK2)

Did anyone else get a pop-up for a new OTA update today? I'm running NI2 and the new one looks to be NK2. Google doesn't return much in the way of results for something coming today/recently. There's not much on Verizon's site either: http://www.verizonwireless.com/dam/support/pdf/system_update/benefits-galaxy-s5-12-16-14.pdf All it lists is a VPN fix, SD card fix, and replacing ISIS with Softcard. It does not appear to be Lollipop
Hopefully flashing the kernel to NCG rooting and then returning to the current kernel still will work. I can download the files if someone can explain how to extract the kernel.
I too just received this update. Going to wait don't want to lose root
I got the update and applied it. Lost root (knew I would), but everything else seems fine.
I don't know how to extract the kernel though. Hopefully others take notice and help you or just provide the process and files for the masses.

Also just got the update on my Verizon GS5.
Appears to be a small update as the download and install did not take as long as other major updates.
Verizon still at 4.4.4
Unable to find any reference to the change log via a google search.
Anyone have a change log?
TL
Still amazes me after all these years how quick people are to install updates. I don't touch them with a ten foot pole till i find out 100% what's in them lol.

use terminal emulator or adb (just need root) - for system and kernel dump
Code:
su
dd if=dev/block/mmcblk0p15 of=/mnt/sdcard/boot.img
dd if=dev/block/mmcblk0p23 of=/mnt/sdcard/system.img
Seems to be a small and non-critical update. I'll probably skip on this and wait for lollipop.

I've had a few skips here and there, but occurances vary greatly depending on the app, BT device, and distance. 90%, though, is problem free.
I just updated lost root of course, used the towleroot/odin flash method and put the NI2 kernal back on, phone says I am still up to date with NK2, and finds no new updates. Not sure if this is actually the case, I am still new to all of this. But I do have root access back now so..
you would have to odin back to ncg kernal, root then odin nk2 kernel back once and if its available
---------- Post added at 08:40 PM ---------- Previous post was at 08:37 PM ----------
if u odin ni2 and still shows nk2 then it probably didnt work.. either way, you need to wait until someone puts out the kernal for nk2 or else u might as well stay on nk2 or just go back to ncg root install ss then flash rom of choice and then kernal of choice lol. im content where im at especially when theres no big changes at all
been waiting for this just for the SD card fix ever since the verizon tech's told me it was coming, hopefully they really did fix it.
Now the anxious waiting for it to get posted since I can't do OTA from Canada.
I will wait for it to be rootable, as I'm not willing to lose that.
That said, I've been waiting to be able to use OpenVPN over 4G/3G since I got the phone, so if this fixes the issue, it's definitely worth the update for me. I still can't believe it's taken them this long to fix the freaking issue...

I have not lost any BT connection, and I am running NI2 4.4.4 and a Gear 2 Neo.
I too will also likely skip this until Lollipop, and then I will only upgrade to Lollipop if/when it is launched/rootable.

It won't be rootable, as the past 2 updates haven't been rootable. As long as you can downgrade to NCG, that's your root method right there. You won't be able to root the new updates as they stand.
Chainfire's Super Su survival mode works great on new update.
Nevermind lost root

Sure its a paid add on but just click save root and update. Reboot update binaries and done

Did you do that, and keep root on NK2?
Any rooted users out there want to pull me the OTA zip file from /cache folder once it's downloaded? I'll make you guys a flashable NK2 kernel so you can do the same method as before.
