Windows phone' s questions! - Windows Phone 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

With the jailb all limitations are deleted or...?
Android or WP?
XperiaS(HTC ONEX, S2) or Lumia 800? (I want to keep the phone for two years)
dual/quad core or single core?
Thank you a lot

Don't think you can get jailbreaks currently for WP7. It maybe a while or may not even be available.
As for the OS, it's your call really. I find WP7 quite pleasing to use. Android is ok, but not as polished as WP7. And of course the major problem with Android is not getting updates on a timely basis. After 5 months, most phones are still waiting for ICS.
But the HW is another story. Android has better hardware. If I were to go for a phone today for the next 2 years, I would go for the HTC One X.
If you prefer WP7, then the Nokias are the way to go. Beautiful hardware and Nokia's full commitment to WP7 including exclusive apps like Nokia Drive make it worthwhile to buy Nokia.
Disclaimer: I haven't used the One X or Nokia. I own a HTC Radar and am reasonably happy with it.

go for windows phone and even consider samsung windows phones. They can be easily jailbreaked by interop to get the most of it.

LG running Windows Phone 7 Now what to buy ??

Just saw this Video.
http://www.gsmarena.com/lg_handset_running_windows_phone_7_caught_in_the_wild-news-1477.php
The specs are really awesome, 1GB of RAM!!!
Also winmo & looks pretty slick, I was thiking of getting a android phone end of this year. But with this coming up I am not sure what to do. When are they going to come up with phones that can boot multiple OS system. (could have tried palm pre OS too )
The only other phone I heard coming up which would have better specs than this is the HTC scorpion.

Wait until it's time to upgrade, then ask again.
It makes zero sense to think about this now. A lot will change until the end of the year (lots of Android phones coming out and LG will not be the only company making WP7 devices).

And here is an HD 2 running WP 7. http://www.winmo.nl/windows-phone-7-series-draait-op-de-htc-hd2/
There are no phones currently out with WP 7, M$ is just testing chassis requirements . It seems the base requirement is going to be a 1 Ghz processor. By the time WP 7 is officially released in 3Q 2010, believe me there will be a bunch of phones from HTC, LG, and others loaded with or upgradable to WP7S.

That page you linked to is unlikely to be legit, there is no confirmation that the HD2 is able to run Windows Phone 7. In addition, I'm not sure they're going to offer upgrades, because phones like the Toshiba TG02 and K01 are launching with 6.5.3 with no indication of an upgrade.
i think
that hd2 will be your best mobile

The site is legit, it is the Dutch Engaget or Boy Genius Report, whether the pics are legit or not, who knows, but all the US rumor sites are picking up on them and the general concensus is that the HD 2 has the hardware to be upgradable
http://www.redmondpie.com/htc-hd2-to-get-windows-mobile-7-upgrade-9140128/
Yep, the HD2 specs will be able to handle WM7.
I completely agree that the specs meet the requirements, but the question is whether it will happen (either due to the efforts of HTC or the community here at XDA).
I don't mean to **** in your cheerios or anything. But that site says IF that phone is the RUMORED LG Apollo then it will probably have 1gig ram etc. All that article says for sure is that it's a WM7 phone. I won't hold my breath.
B4 winmo 7 came out, the choice was too obvious, get Android (unless you want break the promises you made to yourself and get an IPHONE). Now my contract finishes beginning of Q3, and I was thinking of getting HTC desire. Now back to confusion, LG 1GB vs HTC desire 512Mb, Android with 20,000 apps Vs Microsoft WiMo. Hopefully we will get more info about winmo 7 soon.
Motorola XT720 Motoroi.
That's what I'm going to buy as my next phone
Bye HD2...

IOS or WP7?

Im using 3GS right now and will either upgrade to a WP or IP4/5, I am sick of Android feeling like its still in a beta stage and freezing, closing apps, lagging no matter what phone. Anyway back when I used the focus the UI was amazing! But it was missing features...IOS is great! Time for some new features though imo, has WP7 been upgraded to more features? And how long will those updates last for the current WP's? What in your opinion is the best WP? And ultimatly what do you think is better? Hopefully Apple announces what IOS5 will be like. I really like WP7 but it felt like it needed time to get more features and some Apps were not optimized properly(ebay) but wow! That os is like butter! If it keeps getting features I may have to go WP! Especially if IOS5 is the same old, But for now I guess I gotta stay IOS.
maybe you should wait until fall or september, then both iphone 4s and major updates for WP7 are released, that time you can make a better comparison.which phone to buy...
The Fall Update to WP is a pretty big one, and new hardware will come out with it so I'd wait. The OS as it is, is to me the best designed out there, and the features people have been aching for are almost all coming with Mango (the fall OS update). Its going to be pretty nice, but ultimately up to you what you like most.
you've already pointed out that ios is complete and mature, try a friends phone around christmas and see if wp7 updates are all they're claimed to be...
the iPhone/iOS really is matured. You know where the saying comes from "There is an app for that".
I am still missing a lot of apps I was using on the iPhone, which are not (yet) available for WP7. But I really like the look of feel of WP7.
Wait for Mango if you like simplified device working more or less without any trouble
and you don't miss some basics. The UI is consistent and very easy.
For more sophisticated and better equipped device look somwhere else.

IMO the UI on Wp7 blows iOS out of the water. It's simple yet still highly functional. I keep making my older and less technical users go to WP7 devices. They all seem to love it and I see them on their phones all the time - I'm sure their productivity is tanking lol.
Ignorance is Bliss, as they say.
But I'd wait until Mango and IP5 is our and make a more informed decision.
Right now WP7 can't hold a candle to iOS, but the update will be big. Unfortunately it's months off so you'll have to use a phone that has 30+% less functionality than your 3GS and many showstoppers (and lack of Apps) if you upgrade NOW.
I'd wait.
Wait for iPhone4S/5 and WP7 Mango update, and then decide. You might look into Samsung Galaxy SII as well, it's very fast. Maybe more device coming out with Dualcore/Quadcore that improves Android. WP7 is still in beta stage imho.
I've been using wp7 since October when I replaced my 3gs, and I've missed nothing so far.and that's been very honest, the thing is all I use to use on the iPhone was Facebook eBay satnav n a few more apps so the 300k appstore didn't matter to me. You've gotta think about the features and apps u need. Upgrading to wp7 guarantee u mango update regardless of the handset you choose.
Wp7 Focus
wp7 for sure, the metro UI is amazing.
I just bought a WP& phone, will post what i think of it, just hope the app market kicks off and MS add more functionality and that it becomes moddable

Functionality is more than coming:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1084161
Marketplace is already pretty good considering dev's cant create certain apps yet (Mango SDK will have all the 1500+ API's available, many of which will be used to create these lacking apps).
If you are looking for heavy modification, it may not be the platform for you, but people will definitely be modding it. Just not the extent WM & Android users are probably used to.
I went with the iPhone4, Im still gonna wait and see how WP7 goes and see what Apple does with IOS5, then I can make my Dec with what I want, but Ive heard from a lot of news sources that WP7 is doing pretty bad in sales and that its really not catching on at all, hopefully it dosnt go the way of the Kin phones...
As some have already said, I would probably wait for the Mango update and iPhone 5 before making the decision. I got a WP7 and I really enjoy it, but I think to make a fair choice, you should wait to pick between the two.

They are doing it as quickly as possible. Its a major change at Nokia, it doesn't happen overnight. Nokia is planning for a late 2011 release of their first phone(s), and they are planning a whopping 12 devices (rumored so far) in 2012 running wp7 (including a dual core N8 version with a 12MP high optics camera). They will be using both qualcomm chips and SE dual core chips according to forbes.
http://blogs.forbes.com/elizabethwo...bes.com: Technology News)&utm_content=Twitter
There will also be some pretty nice second gen phones from Samsung, HTC, LG ect so people should have quite a few nice ones to choose from.

[Q] Best prepared phone for Mango

I currently have a Pre 2 which in itself is a fantastic phone has alot of cool things going for it. thing is im a bit of an app geek really didnt release until i went to webOS with limited number of apps.
I am very short on cash and am tied down to a contract for another 20 months after firstly upgrading and selling my phone to get a pre. Now i wanna have a WP7 but i no for a fact i wont be able to afford a new device.
SO question is what current WP7 is best prepared to update to Mango?
Just to let u no i have a hate relationship with Samsung!
Any advice would be appreciated otherwise im sticking with the pre 2 :-(
Any and all. All WP7 phones will be getting the Mango update!
i am aware that alll current windows phone 7 will be getting the mango update but which current device will best suit mango is what i was trying to say.
i am aware that all current wp7 are pretty similar but they are unique in there own individual way
i am tempted by the either the LG Optimus 7 or the HTC Pro 7 both are in my price range. i just wanted some peoples opinions on actually living with the phones and the expectations with Mango coming on and its 500 or so new features.
Also just a quick question someone might be able to tell me... i've read there has been a slow down in the release of apps. Is this due to the Mango update being released soon? Will all current apps be able to work on Mango?
Once again, any and all phones will work great with Mango due to the software being coded for the minimum hardware requirements (which all phones meet or even exceed!)
So just go with what screen size and/or features suit you Personally I wanted an AMOLED screen so I went with a Samsung Omnia 7 as it was cheap as well.
Many developers will wait until Mango is released because Mango will offer more API's so the hardware is better utilised. Current apps will work on Mango AFAIK.
All current devices will be about the same. They are all missing gyroscopes & front facing cameras, so certain mango features won't be enabled across the board with all current devices.
Just pick the one you like the form factor of, screen size ect.
As for which is the best? Its opinionated, but I would get the Samsung. Samsung uses better NAND memory and has a much better screen. Other than that it will perform the same as the HD7.
You will see a large surge in new apps come mango. Developers are waiting till they can submit their new apps with all the abilities and API's opened up to them.

Thanks for your opinion this is what i was after
FFC dont really bother me as i have great desire to use Skype on a phone. Interestingly i am wondering how the gyroscope on the new devices will work?
Also i was wondering what NAND is?
Coming from a Palm Pre 2 i was thinking about the DELL Venue as it has a slide out keyboard. a 4.1" AMOLED screen. Thing is if its anything like other DELL then ill stay clear!
What about the HTC Pro 7? worth a look? i like the fact of having an option to have a physical keyboard though this is not essential.
I've read that the LG Optimus 7 has a few, nice extra features that other phones dont?!
I liked my friends HTC Desire HD but am not a fan of android so im also thinking about the HTC HD7
Choices choices choices. HELP!!!

Hi! I too just came from a Palm Pre 2! What a coincidence. I advise you not to go with Android. I in fact switched from a Motorola Droid to a Pre Plus in September of 2010 and then a Pre 2 in March of 2011. I have since upgraded to an HTC Trophy and I love my phone. I'm on Verizon, so the Trophy was my only WP7 choice. But it wasn't a bad one at all! While Web OS is a gorgeous operating system, I find WP7 more attractive and easier to use at times. The bigger screen and the keyboardlessness is what really tickles my fancy. Anyway, I would have to agree with the above poster and say a Samsung Focus is the best choice. I myself would have chosen one if I could because of the simple black, and sleekness of the device. Also, I became an early adopter of Mango and 7712 is absolutely amazing, you won't regret it! Variety is fun when it comes to smartphones.
Nexus One -> BB Torch -> Omnia 7 -> Pre 2
Above is my History of Smartphones and i'm anti Apple so i'm not getting an iPhone. I had the Omnia 7 in just in time for the NoDo update and i enojyed it but had lusted for a Pre 2 and webOS.
I am in the UK so i am limited to the phones available in the UK with the HTC Trophy, HD7, Pro7, Mozart, LG Optimus 7, and the Dell Venue Pro 7. I don't really want another Omnia 7 as i have already had it.
The only thing i didnt like about the WP7 was the ringtones and alert tones were not change to my own. Has this been sorted now? is this supported officially?
Anyone any experience in UK with an imported HTC Surrond?
Whats the difference between the HTC Pro 7 and the HTC Arrive ?

[Q] HTC phone with Windows Phone 7?

Okay, do you guys expect the new phone with the WP7 OS of HTC in the future? Though the HTC has publiced several models last year,it did not satify everyone who using the wp7 phone of htc.
With the mango edition releasing, several top equipment Manufacturers have cooperated with the MS company, especialy the Nokia. But I do not expect too much to Nokia, just take look at its new WP7 phones's specification, I feel so disappointed, I hope it go better!
Are you confident in the WP7?

WP8 ....made by developers for WP7.x

Okay im not a tech savvy person here but...
HD2 was able to switch from WinMobile 6.5 to Android to WinPhone 7
Is there anything preventing developers from making an unofficial port of wp7 to wp8?
Is the core structure that vast that we cant repeat history like the HD2?
Who knows, maybe HD2 will be the first to run unofficial WP8 XDD
Just a theory, feel free to debunk me straight away
With the change in kernel, it is nearly impossible i think
HD2 was able to run WP just because it was a WM 6.5 device and WM6.5 and WP7 share the same Windows CE kernel
I think we will only be able to get to WP 7.8 due to the CE to NT kernel change
(but even that will hopefully give us the full Skype integration that I want so much and a multitude of other features)
Windows Phone 7 and Android have different kernels and both run on the HD7 (or HD2, I don't remember)
This "kernel" talk is complete bull****. Just replace the kernel with one that supports legacy hardware and it's done. Windows RT runs on ARM and our WP7.5 phones are just that. The ones with WP8 too. The ONLY difference is the extra core.
What kind of kernel?

I don't understand: What kernel supporting legacy hardware are you talking about here? Where will this come from, who will provide it?
I think we are right at the center of the problem here: Of course Microsoft could provide all kinds of device drivers for WP8 so that it could run on current WP7 phones, but decided against it - probably just too much costly work with almost no gain or even active opposition from manufacturers who want to sell new phones.
Yeah its got to be about getting the new devices sold, increase the market share. Besides, The gpu's and ram in our current phones won't be able to keep up with the new devices even when the new core with its native code stuff comes. Its like trying to run a new game on an old computer, it will load up fine but it'll run so slow it'd be unplayable. I believe that wp7.5 is pushing our current hardware to the limits

That's really hard to say without anyone actually trying to run WP8 on a current WP7 phone; on the PC front, Windows 8 seems to be faster on the same hardware than Windows 7. And many times and in many apps the CPU inside your phone is boring itself to death anyway because it has so few things to do.

You're talking about this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1483377
HD2 was able to boot Android (linux kernel) just because of the support of HaRET. Nothing can be done on it own.
And do remember that "famous HTC devices that are capable of running HaRET are the QSD8250 based HTC HD2 and a wide range of MSM7xxA based phones like the diamond, raphael and touch pro 2". Right now only the HD2 is still alive and its QSD8250 will be outdated soon.
You're talking about replacement like it's so easy. Changing kernel means every vendor has to rewrite everything from scratch including drivers for their devices. WP8 is designed to run on this new kernel (not the old kernel) so it does not support current devices. That's fair i think.
That's what we call changing (unlike 'changing' on Android or iOS, changing every now and then but nothing's new). Just hope that MS wont change too often.
Anyway, it's just only an announcement. The exact date of releasing WP8 is unknown. Right now, we still holding a device that runs a good OS. And even when WP8 is released, my phone's still doing something 'pretty much WP8' with 7.8 update. And can do that until i can afford a WP8 device or when everyone is switching. But that the story of at least 1 year from now.
"Right, old computer, like the Lumia 900's that appear in the stores right now, born in factories at most a few weeks ago "
Maybe not old, but ****ty hardware for sure, that won't run on on the new Windows Phone 8 because its more hardware hungry.
If we could get Windows Phone 8 onto some of the newer android handsets, especially the HTC One X, it would be AWESOME!

That would be more realistic )
I think the main issue for MS is that kernel changes require flashing ROMS - high risk of bricking and WAY beyond the ability of most of their market. So why would they invest that level of development in a small niche market that potentially undermines their own market (look at the crossover between developers and hackers/crackers lol). You need to look at the commercial sense of their decisions not your own needs.

complete faith although ?S
I have complete faith wp8 or an adjusted version of wp8 will be cooked to run on our gen2 devices, heck remember seeing froyo run on the tmobile g1?
And I think that will give our phones better resale value when we do decide to purchase a wp8 handset, i know that's my semi long term goal when I upgrate my handset.
but what I want to know is and i'm not sure if it was covered in the press announcements, say you continue using your gen2 device, will all new upcoming wp8 apps stop working altogether?
for instance what if instagram, pandora, words with friends (which i know is coming) although engineered and designed for wp8 because yes i know its being rewritten differently, will they not work at all on wp7.8?
that's my semi concern, since they were finally able to hspl my titan and once the wp8 sdk (is that what it's called?) gets dumped and chefs get their hands on it, will it only be a matter of time before it is ported to our handsets as well?
I think what msft should have made absolutely clear and i'm not sure if they covered it or if i missed something, if they said "continue using your 7.8 device all apps written in the future will be usable on these devices" if that's the case people shouldn't worry and simply wait for their 2 year carrier contracts to expire and finally upgrade.
the only thing that prevents me from keeping my titan for long term use is that i really really need expandable storage.
@pvt_nemesis: Every single OS or firmware update has the same risk of breaking ("bricking" is a little strong, since it's technically recoverable, but people seem to use the term less strictly these days) a phone as the full kernel flash that you're talking about. There's nothing magical about an OS kernel. The WP7 kernel has almost certainly been replaced at least once by an update already (I'm pretty sure Mango updated part of the kernel).
Cooking a custom ROM of WP8 for WP7 hardware will mostly depend on the availability of drivers, I think. Unlike the current custom ROMs, which take their drivers from current ROMs, the switch from CE to NT will make all the WP7 drivers useless for WP8 ROMs. Therefore, we'll need WP8 (NT-on-ARM) drivers for the hardware of out WP7 devices... and there's no guarantee that it'll be available. It might, though.
