It's ridiculous that people are getting so bent out of shape about ciq! Google, Yahoo et al, have been not only tracking where you are, but where you LOOK!*I'm all for CIQ, look you can't complain about crappy cell / data services, if you won't let the carriers know what's going on! OR, do you want to be the one that has to call their tech support, every time the signal sucks??!

I said, when your signal sucks.. NOT gone, besides you'd likely still have cell service. I even when you don't have data.

Anyone that secretly runs anything that moves data off my device is not harmless. They deny it until they come up with some PR that makes it sounds benign and for my own good. I'm not bent out of shape, I simply say no based on their deceit. You can run it but I won't. What's the problem? Besides, this is ancient news so I don't know what you are getting so fed up about.
Why are we complaining about CIQ when it's been removed from phones with 2.3.6 and 4.0.3.
I'm not remotely upset I've just noticed that so many people are really concerned about it. Google was tracking iPhone users, fb owns people's fb content, loyalty cards track your buying habits... CIQ does some of these things, I'm sure... But if CIQ were active AND resulted in better service... I'm all for it
Sent From my Two Tin Cans & String Device on The Wookie Network
So deceit and questionable technology is justified because other services are tracking me too? No. The companies I use that track me say what they are doing. The ones that aren't being honest about don't get my business. Doesn't matter if the service is free, it is still a business. Claims such as the one from my carrier say "we didn't know it was installed and besides we didn't turn it on". Yeah, right, my carrier paid money for a secret app they never intend to use. More reason to doubt the intentions. CIQ is commercial app and doesn't do this for free.
I still don't see why you even started this. I don't see those angry threads you speak of. That has died way down. I know they are out there but like ads and fanboys, they are invisible.

Now if you want to rant about the geekgasms over a crappy ICS leak then go for it. That's a lot more noisy and wasteful than a month's old issue that isn't clogging the tubes any longer.
No, I'm not saying that deceit & questionable technology is ok, because others are doing it.. It's just that I can see an actual benefit from CIQ..... To Me! Better service.
I don't know if you read some of the threads, regarding the ICS leak, but some were pretty vocal about CIQ, that's why I started this thread..
If you feel that this thread is pointless, by all means, feel free to recommend that it be deleted..
No worries

I got bored with the me too ICS posts so haven't seen CIQ references. So if they are filled with that then I see your point. But I didn't see mention of it in my brief reading of threads that have little value yet. The threads are tiring even without CIQ. Those threads will be replaced with facts once the devs have had time. CIQ will probably crop up again I'm sure.
No I'm not going to suggest thread deletion. I'm not that much of an idiot. If I was I'd whine over at androidforums where the Stazi patrol threads with an iron fist.
Great that you see value in something I don't. Give me the button to turn it off and everyone is happy. Deceit gets you an instant off just like in retail no matter what the excuse is.
OP, i agree with you, people get out of hand on such stupid things. As you said, your home computer is tracked like there is no tomorrow and people either dont know or dont care but when a carrier does it, its a SPY TRAGEDY. Who cares if your carrier knows whats going, thanks to that they can improve of a bunch of things. They dont spend time goign into your life to know what porn video you watch on your computer...
The fact that it wasn't disclosed to consumers until after it was discovered by consumers on their own makes people suspicious (paranoid even). And that we weren't given the ability to opt out (hell, even the iPhone has an option to disable it for non-rooted users).
Add to that the fact that the amount of data CIQ could theoretically track on you (including not just key strokes but could record calls and text messages and your location for everything you do). Doesn't get more 1984 than that.
I'm all for helping improve service, but if CIQ is so harmless, then why all the secrecy? And why make it impossible to disable without rooting? Why did they lie about knowledge of its presence?

for those of you on TapATalk
This looks like some well-meaning, do-gooder idea, but I can assure you that it's the camel sticking its head in a tent. I'm referring to the breaking news about how four U.S. Senators (who apparently have nothing better to do) want to control what apps you can or cannot buy. They began their effort by nearly demanding that Apple eliminate any iPhone apps that help consumers find police checkpoints, so they can avoid them.
The rationale behind removing these apps is the Senators say the only reason people would want to avoid a police checkpoint is because they're drunk. Thus, they've rationalized that the apps are a hazard to the public.
The four U.S. Senators, all Democrats, are Charles Schumer of New York, Harry Reid of Nevada, Frank Lautenberg of New Jersey and Tom Udall of New Mexico, and they should be voted out of office as soon as possible. What's wrong with the voters?
In a widely quoted joint letter to Apple's iPhone VP, Scott Forstall, the Senators wrote:
We write today with grave concern regarding the ease with which downloadable applications for the iPhone, iPad, and other Apple products allow customers to identify where local police officers have set up DUI checkpoints. With more than 10,000 Americans dying in drunk-driving crashes every year, providing access to iPhone and iPad applications that alert users to DUI checkpoints is harmful to public safety.
If this is actually about public safety, then why don't the Senators also advocate removing all the apps that show the numerous speed traps around the country? After all, speeders are a danger too, no? In fact, speeding is the leading cause of death not drunk driving.
By the way, sober people like to avoid police checkpoints, too, if you haven't noticed. Who the heck wants to go through a police checkpoint to be grilled like a criminal for doing nothing more than driving down the street?
This whole thing is an attempt to regulate apps. Already we've seen the FCC poke its nose into regulating the Internet by getting involved in net neutrality issues. As this column is being written, meetings are taking place all over Washington to find ways to regulate the distribution and use of the Internet. Watch CSPAN sometime and you can see the guys ready to set up shop to do this.
This will eventually mean licensing. In the early 1900s, when the radio hobby was blossoming, you didn't need a license to broadcast anything. We thought free access was going to change the world. Then the government jumped in because things were supposedly getting too chaotic. The hobbyists were shoved into a few specific bands and the pros (commercial companies) were required to have a license. Soon the hobbyists (ham operators) were required to have a license too.
And where is all the real action in the radio spectrum? The unlicensed bands. Now, another Legislator, Peter King wants to ban the ham radio folks—the only people who manage to communicate during real emergencies—from operating. Again there is a bogus rationale. In this case, it's because of the idea that Muslim hams can plan terrorist attacks. This is our government at work.
The nerve of these four Senators to pressure a private company like Apple to sell or not sell something is incredible to me. This crap is just going to get worse as long as guys like this remain in office.

What they are getting at is they want to regulate the type of applications that are made available via public access application markets. They are not wanting to watch what is made available via, forums or what not, just what is on the market. It's a stupid idea to me. Developer sends app to google, FCC/DOJ clears the app it goes lives. This could easily be controlled. But you are 100% correct if someone makes an app, we'll say this DUI checkpoint app, and post it via any forum their is no way of one person, or group of being able to control it. Esp if lets say 2 dozen people store the .apk somewhere on a hard drive.

Ya thats cheap publicity stunt as they trying to show brain washed Americans they are actually doing something. Its all total BS when we should be worried about real issues in USA but we have to deal with these type of BS. I still don't see why we can't just hang them for high treason and get it over with. I know I am harsh but we need this type actions to get rid of these degenerates. It don't matter who we put in office they all part of the same good ol party of BS politicians.
This is why freedom no longer exists in the USA! You can't even leave the country of your own will! Gun control is a prime example. My ssn doesn't do squat for me because some killer is in the florida state penitentiary that has the same name as me! They make me wait for a fire arm. Yet my fingerprints and ssn are suppose to help eliminate that issue. The laws are for control not protection! Why would any sane individual hold the head of a dead man up to get his picture taken with them? These are the new soldiers that are being bread. The kind of trash that will do what the government tells them to do. Not what they should no is wrong. Look at law enforcement. My wife use to be in it. Now she is disgraced that it has gotten as bad as it has. Look at education. Kids are being dumbed up instead of taught. The less knowledge, money, skill, and power you have, the more obedient you will be! Just remember George Washington! He knew what to do and when to do it.

I would put money on it that the all Android devices keep track of location, Google lives off statistics, no way tehy don't know everything about everything you do with the thing.
I did some reading into this and the bit I don't get is that cell location isnt very accurate, so did the guy who "visualised" his data there just keep GPS on _all-the-time_? That's a colossal waste of battery.
I saw this article on many a site last night - and one of them I am sure said that 'android devices haven't found any similar file storing location' or words to that affect.
(think they mentioned WinPho too)
while google do live off stats - do they care that much? they already have a map of where activations happened - they did a map of the North US activations awhile back?

I wouldn't doubt it, I just bet they do it and store the information at their end rather than on the phone. What with all the wifi hotspot privacy problems that have been going on with them and eerything else. I'd expect nothing less from them really.
just more careful then
it doesnt bother me that much (at the moment) as I'm pretty sure my network will also keep track of me anyway
unless google/o2 are going to find my house and rob it while i am out - that doesn't bother me - it's only if someone else found a way to see live my location and then did the above that i'd start being more concerned... or is there something else I should worry about?

Oh, hey, sorry, listen.... I hadnt realized the Xoom police were out. Sorry this wasnt completely understandable for you.
I mean, I can see how some people think that if Google is logging our locations, it might not be a big deal. But this is all just a glimpse at whats coming. I mean I have no idea what that is. But a future where the biggest corporations are tracking people that use there products does not seem like a future I want to be apart of.
Apple gets their customers out of addiction, "the iphone is tracking me? who cares, its pretty." Like there is no logical reason I can think of to have that tracking software built into the nitty gritty of ios, and it being there is just a big slap to the consumers. We already have to worry about apps st but now the os?
Its not like I go or do anything suspicious that I should be worried. It's just that I spent damn near 900 dollars on this device, I don't want it to ****ing track me. Also, I'm sure that would use some sort of data to transfer the data, and with everyones love for only having tiered data plans for tablets, I am paying for them to do this.
Even if it is kilobytes, and I'm only paying a hay penny, thats one hey penny to much for my liking. Us as consumers get the **** end of every stick. They sell us items, bootlock them, track us, apps steal and sell our data, sue us if we post something they don't like (the ps3 guy), just an all around **** you.
I was reading this article the other day on how they're a step closer to building quantum computers. Now what happens when they have computers that can take all the data from every device, and compile it into useful information that will be more personal than your facebook?
They could potentially have what we posted on fb, next to a location we were at, along with the song we were hearing at the time. And in the iphones case, a picture takin from facetime to go right along with it, and for all I know, the xoom is taking pictures of me right now considering its on its stand and im sitting right in front of it typing.
I guess there would be no way for me to tell, since I'm pretty much just an end user, but I hope someone investigates this for us. Because if it turns out the Xoom does anything of the sort I will be getting rid of it. As I have already decided to do with my iphone. It's not about what theyre doing with it. Its about why they decided to do it in the first place, and the fact that they're all data whores.

I believe this is a valid question. Companies like google, apple, and facebook have a strong interest in tracking what we do, what we buy, etc to make their advertising more effective, which means they can charge more for it. Unfortunatly, I think this boat sailed long ago. Even on a PC they can track your IP address or Mac address. The minute you get on the internet you are sending information about yourself. Its that simple. The issue becomes whether companies are, can or should be storing that data. And why are they storing that data. Again most of it is advertising, but it could be used for other things that might not be so innocent. Even the government would have an interest in companies storing data so they can retrive that infor for criminal prosectutions, etc. Now if you want to prove where you were they can call your cell phone provider and just ask.
I think the shock is that it is happening all the time by even the most admired companies like apple. Short of a major rebellion by consumers or government regulation (like Europe has done) this will continue (see the case against Google for 'accidentally' collecting data from wifi networks while they did their street view stuff).
Sometimes technology can suck.

No this is not old news at all. This subject is still being looked into and things are coming to light about it more and more. Yes this is very much on the Sensation. Me personally I am glad someone started a thread on it as it is something I feel everyone should be concerned with.
If you want to learn more about it just go to the XDA Portal and type in a search for Carrier IQ, CIQ, or just IQ and you will see there has been several stories in the portal about it and the dev that is trying to bring all of this CIQ BS into the view of the masses.
Also I have not looked to see but I imagen that there is some custom ROMs for the Sensation that has the CIQ removed from it. I beleive any of the CM7 based ROMs do not have it and it may be more you will just have to read the first posts in the thread by the chef that cooked the ROM.

The ROM just cleans bloatware and other things in HTC Sense to help the ROM run smoother. All devices have this CIQ on them, it is not an app but several things that are hidden deep in the ROM and has to be cooked out of the ROM. ASOP ROMs do not have it. CIQ is definitely a whole new species of logging software, put onto your device by your friendly network operator.
I dare to say that there is absolutely no comparable spying software case so far. If you´d have fully studied about the software this thread is mentioning, you most probably would not have written your statement.
A key logger which records *everything* you type without encryption? A key logger which reads your SMS/test message even before you read it? Come on. This kind of stuff is *definitely" not "in everything". It may be in all network operator subsidized mobile phones (not only Android, but also Nokia and Blackberry affected) in the USA - but definitely not here in Europe.
Here, we actually have laws against such software - especially if it´s distributed by large organizations like network operators, this could result in multi-billion dollar fines.
People here in Europe are not wiser, but they tend to fight a bit more against "big brother" who might be "watching you".

i know what it does, and i still stand on my statement, as you and i type every letter on our keyboard it si being key logged to thats the sad truth of this an everything, no matter how you look or want to make aware to anyone its still exist and as technology grows so will this.. so either cry and complain bout it everytime some like this comes up or just say i know the fact im being watched but what else more can i do.. cause there is nothing you can do.. your normal house phones are being logged, not lot know this but there is KEY words that if you say in a conversation it picks up and sends a alert to the proper authorities..
its something to look and jus get over...
Also think bout it, when something goes truly bad, say a murder uses a phone officials can pick up they logging of calls and texts and read them back, so this loggin has been around for awhile so i dont understand why its becoming sucha big deal when its been around

I wonder how this affects the speed and responsiveness of the phone's OS?

Yes that is true what you said but most people already know that cops can get your records from a phone company with a search warrant depending on how long that company keeps those records.
This is deferent, a third party collecting all information of what you do on your phone without your consent or knowledge is wrong. This company is also not the government so what right do they have without your consent.
Yes on a console, a PC, and1st and 2nd party apps on your phone you give consent for them to use various monitoring techniques but you have a choice, here with carrier IQ you are not giving that choice it is there and you have to use a crowbar to get it out of your phone.
I'm no fanatic but I do believe in the constitution. It is your right to give away your privacy but it is not for someone else to take it away from you.

You keep saying it is nothing you can do about it, well you could not be more wrong. You can take and S-off your device, unlock your device, root, or what ever the proper method is for your particular device to be able to flash a custom recovery. Then simple download and flash any AOSP ROM. This will give you a device without CIQ.
Now you must not have read the official withdraw of the S&D letter to TrevE that IQ posted a link to on their website. Go yo the XDA Portal and have a look a the latest article by orb3000. Obviously the message has gotten to IQ and I would say more than likely the Carriers. Yeah some say that the power users are a small group but it is a group with great power. When the people that a large force in building enthusiasm for devices and OS's speak out against something that they do not like, people tend to listen. Therefore it has a large chance of affecting sales, new contract signings, and contract renewals.
This whole attitude of people not being able to do anything about something people consider wrong, is such a epic fail. I mean if no one never tries to bring change to something then yeah sure nothing will happen. And the powers that be gains that much more control. But luckily people are starting to get tired of never having change and are starting to do something about this messed up world of ours.
Last thing, if you think this is a simple logging system. Again you could be more wrong. This CIQ has full access to your device, as well as full rights. It can not be killed, forced close, or uninstall. I will not go into any further details, but this is far from what IQ and the carriers want you to think it is.

Carrier is a global company. The company does have offices in London...
http://www.carrieriq.com/company/index.htm
And under the heading "About Carrier IQ"
http://www.sys-con.com/node/1865183
So European phones may have CIQ installed depending on what the mobile provider. Something that our friends over the pond
should research.

Hi,
That is very well put.
If you sit back and do nothing, then nothing will get done.
The more people complain about this, the more something is likely to be done.
As far as the carriers are concerned, they probably think that no one knows that this stuff is even installed!
Its important to show our awareness of this situation, and complain about it.
How about Logging TestApp? I heard that this app helps you erase all the logging apps in the phone, including this one.

Wow, at first i was reading this thread and had the same, "well whatever" attitude. But after just a couple of minutes googling and reading, this is really messed up. CarrierIQ has issued a cease and dismiss order against the guy in the video, along with threats to sue if he does not publicly apologize.
In ["TrevE!"] we trust!! OPT out!*CIQ's!* YAHOO, MSN, MSNBC, FORBES Magzn!!! "TrevE!!
Just seen this on **YAHOO** front page, Thank's TrevE!
Forbes Magazine on "TrevE"
MSN MSNBC!
"Eckhart says Carrier IQ's software, designed to monitor the performance of a cell phone on a network, is a "rootkit," spying on unsuspecting users. Carrier IQ says it is not."
"While we look at many aspects of a device’s performance, we are counting and summarizing performance, not recording keystrokes or providing tracking tools," the company said in a recent statement. We've contacted Carrier IQ for more information.
I even made a video to let my subscribers know what he had done for the Android and XDA community, great find thanks to him.

They(CIQ) wanted a media storm, surfed the web and there it was.
Hmm, seems they didn't get it, a rootkit is something that hides from the user by running in a low level beyound the operating system, this does not imply any malicious intentions yet, so it definitely is. Thing is, they already stated that it does in fact log all phone connections and SMS (not the actual content they say), what apps are running on the phone and how much they utilize the cpu and even more, which i consider malitious personally, and send the informations to your carrier who should have those informations anyway except the app stuff. They say they collect this information to see if a disconnect happens due to a faulty cell tower to improve their network, but they should be able to get all this information's from their cell towers as well. Also they claim that they collect that app info to know what is causing battery drain on your device, but i think this should be handled in a different, more privacy respecting way.

Jeeze I'm glad I run a custom rom and a custom kernel the day I got my phone. Gives my the shivers knowing that my carrier has that info. This would totally suck for federal agencies that use these CIQ infected devices.
Why is anyone the slightest little bit surprised?
This is an OS created by Google, a company that exists to collect data on you. By definition the more it invades your privacy, the better it is accomplishing its job description.
Chrome is growing in installations every day. This is a browser that exists to collect your data. Everything you type or click on while in that browser gets processed through Google's servers.
What do you think is going to happen when google comes out with a "free", stable, OS for pc's? How much of your activity do you think they'll be monitoring?
Google and Facebook are waging a war right now to see who becomes "big brother" through controlling your access to the internet. Wake up and smell the "long game" running.
Yes, I know CIQ is not a Google product.

Not on the stock or custom roms for the Inspire either.
As for the foil hat. You think the new chip being installed on all US phones after tyebnew year so the government can force texts to your phone is only so they can send you a text? Yeah....I am not so sure about that lol
so apparently the German government (and other entities) have been using silent sms attacks to keep tabs on its civilians
they send a silent sms to someones phone, it dosent show up at all on their device, but it pings back Imei numbers and other info, which can be cross reffed with the operator log of the towers and used to compile an entire movement profile for an individual
now i dont know about you but as an upstanding citizen this kind of crap concerns the heck outta me.
i believe further exploration into some sort of defense against ssms attacks is in order but it is way above my paygrade
I'm not so sure about this.. So the mobile OS developers, operators and the government(s) are involved in this? To me this sounds like someone is a bit paranoid.
It is possible and may not be at the behest of the cell providers. Look at the things that the US government has done in this regard. The patriot act here in the states gives the government the right to view and track calls, emails, and so forth. Though it could be a false alarm it is possible. :s

Not the OS developers, it purely has to do with the carriers. I remember reading a lot about similar things in the past, like pinging a phone, class 0 sms', etc. Does anyone have any related links, whether relating to the governments use or these pinging sms' in general? Sounds like an interesting topic!

I hear you there. Look at the new chip they want in all cell phones in the US starting this year for government based SMS for terrorist threats and amber alerts. Wonder why it is gonna be connected to the GPS and phone mic?
I'm pretty confident that the government and to be more precise law enforcement have all right to keep track of you and your movements if they see fit.
In saying this though, most governments and once again to be more precise law enforcement will only track you and record your activities should you be doing activities that would force them to.
You aren't doing anything you shouldn't be doing are you?
PS I had to give my mobile number to an officer of the law the other day, to say the least I'm kind of paranoid that they will look through previous texts that I have sent which could be incriminating, but in saying this I'm more than happy to accept my fate should such predicament come to haunt me.
My point is that if you need to ensure you aren't being recorded or tracked, do your illegal activities on a phone which cannot be traced back to you.

To say if you are not doing anything wrong then you should not fear having no privacy in the eyes of the government and the law is dumb. People keep information other than criminal activites private for many reasons, And that has the potential for abuse or missuse by the wrong people. For example look at American presidential campaigns Quite often they have people digging up dirt on their rivals, quite often its inconsequential dirt, but the PR firms twist it and stretch it and convert it into a duststorm of contraversy, can you imagine how much easier that type of BS would be if one political contender / group had a supporter or supporters high up with access to this information? low risk move for them, and a goldmine for their marketing firms.

I know that maybe a bit harsh but some of my freinds were those that stood up for our rights and freedom and for someone to say its OK for a government to remove that right rubs me wrong.
I would to if you were innocent until proven guilty but we all know that is not the case anymore. Now you are guilty until proven innocent.
I think the days of thinking that our government is out for the good of people is long over.

Oh for my "protection" well thats okay then.
So whats your stance on carrier IQ then? after all its only sending information that will make our phone using experiance better, And from a safety issue SOPA and the Australian internet filter are brilliant, Means I can not access those nasty sites that will put me at risk, Just like in China. It does not stink of isolationisim and control at all. And all no one should want ANYTHING kept private if they are not breaking the law should they? Infact privacy breeds suscpicion. How about for everyones safety you post your private details and smses as well as your daily schedule so we know you are not going around consorting with terroists or drug dealers.
Anyone who would sacrifice liberty for security deserves neither.

^^^^--- This.
Anyway, as far as being able to track you they would need probable cause to even begin to attempt to defend themselves if any government type decides to do this. At least enough to warrant a search a seizure. I don't know how the laws are outside of the states but I can imagine unless you're in a dictatorship or you live in a communist nation the laws are similar.
Higher-ups have always been able to do this, that's not the question. The question is the legitimacy of the situations that they decide to use their power.
LOL
I love you guys who born and grow up in the US. and Western part where democracy is practicing daily.
Coming off a communist country, I love freedom a lot but ......... if you do no harm to the nation, no harm to the country, no harm to the community and no harm to anybody, then you SHOULD NEVER worry about it.
If you say "Obama is suck and I hate him" you not gonna be jailed for that.
If you say "I hate white president and I never vote for those again", you not gonna be fined for that.
If you say "I just have sex with my g/f and she moans like crazy", they not gonna care to listen to your conversation.
But if you are up to something, potentially put the nation, commnunity at risk, yes, you are deserved to lock up for the rest of your life as the safety issue for the rest.
Period.
Yes a the moment the government can suboena Google or whoever and can get the info but at least there is a process to be followed paperwork and its all mostly in the open. So if this is the case why do they need to get this info via this chip? To me the potential for misuse outweighs the potential for safety removing a link in the chain does not nessicarily make the chain better or stronger

Look at all the articles about how carriers gave the FBI an open ticket to their systems. The government has been doing unwarrented wire taps for years now in the name of security which is BS.
As for the previous comment no you don't get in trouble for things like that but let me tell you a true story about a buddy of mine.
He and his girlfreind got into an argument where she made up lies about how he said he would kill her for threating to run away with their child. The cops find him on a bus leaving state. Tosses him in jail for 4 weeks until he sees a judge as their is no bail in the state for demestic issues. Then he get 6 months probation and has to pay $4000 in fines. Cant go to trial as she cant be found. Now he has assault on his record and is having trouble finding work as all it says is ASSAULT nothing else. All for words he never said. But even if he had it was still just words. Nothing more. No history of violence. Just an empty threat.
Yeah freedom right. Guilty until proven innocent
Wow, never heard this until now
