I've seen so much information and so many ways to root and I don't know what to do,all the information is so spread out and so tangled that i can't get my mind around it.
Would anyone willing to give me a clear set of intructions or redirect me to a thread that would help me root and s-off?
I would greatley apreaciate it.
Your options are to either downgrade or unlock with HTCdev
In the general section....
There are two threads for downgrading.
Also one thread for using HTCdev.
On my phone right now so its way to much effort getting the links.
Here's a link to a guide for unlocking the bootloader through htcdev.com and then using SuperOneClick to get root:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1390496
Question: why is it necessary to unlock the bootloader to get root? What does the bootloader do?
The zergRush exploit (which is also used by SuperOneClick) works on my phone, I can also copy the su binary to /system/bin/ but it is gone after I reboot my phone.
(Forgive my n00biness.)

Use the "Search" button, use Google, phone a friend or even ask your grandmother but please & please don't use HTCDEV to unlock your phone. Virtually any other method is (to me) acceptable. Please read the stickies in the dev section.

I would have to agree with this. So many people choose HTC-dev because it's the 'easier option'. It's not. More people seem to end up with problems using HTC-dev and also revolutionary would make life easier for you. A lot of people here have also said kiss your warranty goodbye if you use HTC-dev.

Bootloader protects the partitions from being written to. When it's not unlocked either by S-OFF exploits or by HTCDev tool, you can't really write anywhere besides /data - all your writes are bogus and will be gone, the data isn't actually written.
Google for more info.

Hi guys!
I did some research on how to root the Desire S with Hboot 2.00.0002 and I read that many had problems rooting the phone. I had the same problem since the revolutionary method doesn't support hboot 2.00.0002. This made the process a bit harder.
But here is what I did to root my Desire S:
1. Unlocked bootloader using htcdev.com
(I know that Desire S is not listed but if you use "Desire" it will work.)
2. Downloaded Superoneclick v2.3
(This version is included with zergRUSH and Superuser.)
I connected the phone to the computer in USB Debugging mode and opened Superoneclick. Pressed the "Root" button and the process began. After a minute or two the phone was rooted.
The only problem with this method is that the phone is still S-on. But I think you can flash custom roms and so.
I hope this will help you guys! Good luck

I don't know what the "Begin Unlock Bootloader" button on http://htcdev.com/bootloader/ is meant to do, but I tried clicking it (AFTER logging in) in 3 different browsers and it did nothing.

OK, the answer is that if you access the page at http://htcdev.com/bootloader/ the button doesn't work but if you access it at http://www.htcdev.com/bootloader/ it does. Terribly designed JavaScript!

Sorry for digging up this old post, I am too suffering from the same problem.
Unable to go past the Step #7 Waiting for device
Looks like manu users are facing this problem (after going through SuperOneClick website), but found no solution.
Currently I have unlocked by Bootloader with HTC-dev, and I want to root my stock rom and back it up before trying any other custom rom.
Any help or suggestions on this will be highly appreciated. This is my first post in xda-developers hope everyone will be kind to me :fingers-crossed:

If you're just interested in getting an ICS on your device then you can try this steps as you've already unlocked the bootloader the HTC-Dev way:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1525100
You can use any ROM as per your choice, my personal preference is Fallout:

Be sure to check and read the threads properly before you jump in.
Note for anyone who can help me: Please let me know if there is a way to ROOT HTC Desire S (HBOOT 2.00.0002) HTC-Dev unlocked, so that I can backup my stock ROM first before trying out the custom ROMs. Any help will be highly appreciated.

If you're not worried about warranty, I would strongly recommend a custom ROM.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1146601
Use this to help you, it contains many guides and ask any questions if you need to.
However, if you do want to flash a RUU, here are a list of RUU's. I can see one for HTC India there.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1002506
Also I believe you would need to create a goldcard to flash an unbranded RUU for HTC India. Here is a good guide from Paul O Brien

thank you.
about the 1st link:I'll install custom Rom after a few days because I'm still enjoying the shiny sense 3.0.
about the 2nd link:I've seen that sticky post but couldn't download Asia_India so I downloaded Asia_WWE. but the thing is what is the process. do I have to revolutionary s-off or root my phone? and most importantly will I get the official OTA updates after flashing the stock Rom? I'm more interested about flashing stock Rom. so if you please give the procedure.
about the 3rd link:I'll creat a goldcard ASAP.
With the goldcard use mmc2 not mmc1 as the guide suggested. I.e. change the 1 to a 2 in the adb command.
If you want to get ota's you have to be stock, if you attempted down the line to install an ota on a rooted/altered phone its your own stupidity to blame, and many have done it.
Good stuff on making the goldcard, can't stress it enough how important it can be especially for novices.

You don't need S-OFF or root to flash a RUU. However, it doesn't matter if you do either.
The RUU is an .exe file so run it on your computer and it becomes pretty self explanatory. Also thanks to fox2delta for clarifying that.

If you're using the RUU then you should get OTA's and you'll want to keep your bootloader locked.
You can also go down the custom ROM road but i'm not sure about functionality with indian font.
So I bought a One S from craigslist about 2 weeks ago. The guy said it was a dev phone. At the top on the case is a tag of numbers and letters printed on the phone. When I first boot the phone it has a HTC splash screen along with the text

Booting into the bootloader I get this:

Also it came with CWM 5.8.1.5 already installed. I tried to use Hasoon's tool to install a more recent CWM but it wouldn't work.
I tried to unlock the bootloader using the htcdev site and token and that didn't work.
I was able to flash it with the UTB ROM using the existing CWM and it works but I cannot gain root access even though supersu is installed and I add apps to its list.
Any ideas on how to get root access?
Looking at your HBOOT version it seems like the device is on early software. You're already S-OFF, so you can try flashing the official TMO release ROM and follow the guides on XDA to root.

You could talk to the devs in the development section (as soon as you have your 10 posts) und help them to get s-off with providing informations maybe.
yeah man that would be a great idea, PM some and see if you can help them as for getting the bootloader unlocked, Unless HTCdev isnt working, there isnt much else yet.
why does it not work ? what errors does it give ?
hmm seems that I'm lacking some knowledge ^^
Is there any necessesity for unlocking the bootlaoder if the device already has s-off? Thouht that s-off would mean no security and full system access.
S-OFF means the NAND partition is writeable, When its S-ON this partition is locked (Security ON ), so with S-OFF we can customise even further, Flashing Radio.IMGs and lots more,
With unlocked bootloader we can do things like install a recovery and flash Root.
the perfect scenario would to have S-OFF AND Unlocked Bootloader.

well it doesn't give me any errors, and says unlock successful, and just acts as if it went ahead and unlocked, but when i boot into the loader it still says locked. weird.

I know the command to relock is ''fastboot oem lock'' maybe ''fastboot oem unlock'' might do something lol.

Firstly I declare myself a noob for asking this but I want to be sure of what im doing before I do it.
Basically I want to run a patcher for a perticullar program on my phone however it needs root access to run.
Now my noob question is, what exactly do I need to do (is it just S-Off?) and can somebody send me a link with instructions on how to do this for my device.
I have a stock Sensation Z710e running ICS via OTA download on O2 (UK)
Android Version: 4.0.3
HTC Sense Version: 3.6
Software Version: 3.32.206.12
Any other info needed for definative answer just ask and i shall provide.
Thanks in advance for your help.

or easy way ..but probable (very slim) void of warranty
2. HTCdev unlock (chk this site unlock bootloader)

You cannot gain s-off the normal way, kong story. You news to unlock bootloader via HTC devlock. This because u have ics stock, and therefore hboot version 1.27000. Them root and Them you van s-off via juponut...... something Luke that. Search and u will find.

Thanks for that, worked a treat.
Just a few quick questions:
1. When i boot up holding the volume down key it says S-Off however it still says locked at the top. I have managed to run the patch that needed root access so i'm guessing the phone is rooted fine.
2. Would it saying locked at the top pose a problem if i wanted to run a custom rom in the future and
3. Could i run a rom for the Sensation XL i.e overclocked processor and beats audio on my sensationand if so where would i find the rom?
Thanks Again

you can use the KGS tool (EDIT 3) in my guide for flashing the juopunubear hboot

I have waded through tinky1's sticky above http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1443587.
It appears that the OTA ICS installs a newer bootloader which cannot be unlocked using the older Revolutionary method given here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1192300. I am hesitant/skeptical about using the more recent Juonopeter [sic] method.
Any suggestions as to which method of rooting is easier as I believe it does require S-Off in both cases and/or unlocked bootloader. Any advice (even links pointing to such discussion) will be appreciated.

P.S. Has anyone tried supercurio's Voodoo OTA rootkeeper http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1241517 on the Sensation?

2 options.
1. Use HTCDev official unlock, which unlocks /system partition so you can flash ROMs, but cannot flash firmware if any newer one comes out, unless it's an ruu with your cid. You also have to either manually flash boot.img after every flash, or specifically use smartflash in 4EXT.
2. Use Juopo, get s-off and flash what you want, when you want without any restrictions. I personally haven't seen anyone brick their Senny while using Juopo, you just have to follow the guide.
3. Whoa, hold on. I think revolutionary works with 1.18 hboot! You might have to temp root it first though. Can be done with AIO KGS1992 tool iirc.
All the guides you might need are in post no2 in HELP THREAD above.
Thanks tinky for that rapid response.
I can confirm that the revolutionary method works on 1.18.0000 hboot (its the GB Sensation XE hboot version).
Also this might be worth taking a look at
Edit: Above link is Perm root only so it wont S-OFF the device but tbh the revolutionary.io method is very easy to do so I'd recommend the revolutionary method anyway
