Hi guys!
I did some research on how to root the Desire S with Hboot 2.00.0002 and I read that many had problems rooting the phone. I had the same problem since the revolutionary method doesn't support hboot 2.00.0002. This made the process a bit harder.
But here is what I did to root my Desire S:
1. Unlocked bootloader using htcdev.com
(I know that Desire S is not listed but if you use "Desire" it will work.)
2. Downloaded Superoneclick v2.3
(This version is included with zergRUSH and Superuser.)
I connected the phone to the computer in USB Debugging mode and opened Superoneclick. Pressed the "Root" button and the process began. After a minute or two the phone was rooted.
The only problem with this method is that the phone is still S-on. But I think you can flash custom roms and so.
I hope this will help you guys! Good luck

I don't know what the "Begin Unlock Bootloader" button on http://htcdev.com/bootloader/ is meant to do, but I tried clicking it (AFTER logging in) in 3 different browsers and it did nothing.

OK, the answer is that if you access the page at http://htcdev.com/bootloader/ the button doesn't work but if you access it at http://www.htcdev.com/bootloader/ it does. Terribly designed JavaScript!

Sorry for digging up this old post, I am too suffering from the same problem.
Unable to go past the Step #7 Waiting for device
Looks like manu users are facing this problem (after going through SuperOneClick website), but found no solution.
Currently I have unlocked by Bootloader with HTC-dev, and I want to root my stock rom and back it up before trying any other custom rom.
Any help or suggestions on this will be highly appreciated. This is my first post in xda-developers hope everyone will be kind to me :fingers-crossed:
My Device: HTC Desire S (Android 2.3.5 Stock Unrooted)
HBOOT 2.00.002 S-ON

If you're just interested in getting an ICS on your device then you can try this steps as you've already unlocked the bootloader the HTC-Dev way:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1525100
You can use any ROM as per your choice, my personal preference is Fallout:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1679125
Be sure to check and read the threads properly before you jump in.
Note for anyone who can help me: Please let me know if there is a way to ROOT HTC Desire S (HBOOT 2.00.0002) HTC-Dev unlocked, so that I can backup my stock ROM first before trying out the custom ROMs. Any help will be highly appreciated.

Install a custom recovery like 4EXT in the guide you posted and from there flash superuser. I've attached the file you need.

Hello,
I'm new to android and have been reading a lot. But not everything is clear.
With AlphaRevX you can s-off the desire s.
If you have 0.98.0000 and use AlphaRevX, will it still be 0.98.0000 or will it be upgraded to a higher number?
The desire s (gingerbread) can't be really rooted yet, only gingerbreak.
But to install a custom rom you don't need to be rooted, you only need s-off and goldcard?
Does anyone have an idea when htc will release a s-off tool or s-off bootloader?

The bootloader version number will be changed after alpharevx, to 6.something, to stop accidental bootloader down grading.
Ginger beak is the exploit that we use to achieve root, So it can be rooted!
You don't need gold card.
You're right in saying that you don't need root to flash custom, just soff and a recovery, CWM or EXT4
But you do need root to take the recommend pre custom backup
I don't see htc releasing unlocked boot loader to this device till at least late september as the schedule they've announced initially involves sensation and evo3d only
Sent from my HTC Desire S using XDA Premium App
Thanks a lot, it is much clearer now.

I didn't know that.
So the only purpose of the goldgard is to downgrade the bootloader?

Yep, a pre-backup (a Nandroid backup) always helps and makes you feel slightly more secure when flashing!
Goldcards - I'm afraid that I'm not 100% sure about that.
A quote from @paulobrien @Modaco, "A GoldCard is a special SD card which, when inserted into your device, allows you to flash RUU (ROM Update/upgrade utility) files with a different CID to your own device. For example, if you own a T-Mobile branded device, this will allow you to flash a generic ROM."
As I don't own a network locked device I've never had to use one myself, so my knowledge about them is pretty thin.
Thanks, mine is also not a branded device.
Hi,
I was wondering how you would root a htc desire s hboot version 2.0.0002 with S-ON. Another question I had was on htcdev where I would like to unlock the bootloader on my phone the 'S' model isn't listed. Would it come under the desire or other phone models? Thanks
take other phone models since its a desire s and not a plain desire.
if you got your bootloader unlocked u need to downgrade the bootloader
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1318919
and continue with
http://revolutionary.io/
i didnt tried anythign of this yet but thats what id like to do with my desire s as soon as i got enough time
if youre happy with s-on you could go for the zergRush thing for temproot right after youre done with unlocking the bootloader with htcdev.
hope its correct. ive just started reading yesterady in here
€ or search for the superoneclick. same thing as the zergRush but much more easier to use

OK Thanks For Your Help
is it dangerous to do this?
im no pro in flashing and all this stuff but as long as you follow the instructions there should not be any prob. if theres any high risk in bricking the device or anything there will be an extra warning i guess.
oh and one big nogo i learned by my friends phone.... never ever pull the battery
and you lose the warranty by unlock with htcdev.
Ok thanks is it reversable when the bootloader has been unlocked? Thanks
I have now unlocked the bootloader so how do i root now?
if you just need root, check this
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1390496
if u want s-off u need to downgrad the bootloader and go for revolutionary like i posted befor
€ and always edit your post if u need to add something . dont double post like you did
u just can re-lock your bootloader with htcdev but u cant go back to the normal locked. not 100%sure about this

The point of installing a rom is that they can be smoother and more customisable, they also get rid of a lot of the branding **** that comes with the pjone.
As for sim-unlock this has nothing to do with s-off or routing, you can pay to get it unlocked from ebay, Idid it yesterday and it cost me £3.99, so very reasonable.
would this be ok? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/UNLOCK-CO...ultDomain_3&hash=item3cc0e2889b#ht_3192wt_952
and what is a goldcard? I am new to rooting
Looks ok, I used this one http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Unlock-Co...ssories_RL&hash=item2c611a04e1#ht_2693wt_1344
what is a goldcard? Thanks
goldcard allows you to flash RUU files with a different CID to your device.
what would you say is the best rom? Thanks
Hello folks,
as I don't' want to start a new topic I do hope to get a straight NO answer here

- Build 2.10.401.8 CL156318
- HBOOT 2.00.0002
- Rooted with SuperOneClick

Is there a way to install a Custom ROMs without downgrading HBOOT?

You would've found a guide to do pretty much everything on your Desire S. The first link shows the method of unlocking through htc-dev, however, you can also downgrade your h-boot which although some find harder than htc-dev, i believe it is the better option. You'll find a guide for that in the thread above as well, believe it or not.
Firstly I declare myself a noob for asking this but I want to be sure of what im doing before I do it.
Basically I want to run a patcher for a perticullar program on my phone however it needs root access to run.
Now my noob question is, what exactly do I need to do (is it just S-Off?) and can somebody send me a link with instructions on how to do this for my device.
I have a stock Sensation Z710e running ICS via OTA download on O2 (UK)
Android Version: 4.0.3
HTC Sense Version: 3.6
Software Version: 3.32.206.12
Any other info needed for definative answer just ask and i shall provide.
Thanks in advance for your help.

two ways for you to get root
1.SOFF then one click root ..guide link in my signature
or easy way ..but probable (very slim) void of warranty
2. HTCdev unlock (chk this site unlock bootloader)
and the same one click root (guide in my signature)
You cannot gain s-off the normal way, kong story. You news to unlock bootloader via HTC devlock. This because u have ics stock, and therefore hboot version 1.27000. Them root and Them you van s-off via juponut...... something Luke that. Search and u will find.

Thanks for that, worked a treat.
Just a few quick questions:
1. When i boot up holding the volume down key it says S-Off however it still says locked at the top. I have managed to run the patch that needed root access so i'm guessing the phone is rooted fine.
2. Would it saying locked at the top pose a problem if i wanted to run a custom rom in the future and
3. Could i run a rom for the Sensation XL i.e overclocked processor and beats audio on my sensationand if so where would i find the rom?
Thanks Again

2. you can change the locked bootloader to juopunutbear HBOOT..it helps or makes your process simplified for flashing custom roms
you can use the KGS tool (EDIT 3) in my guide for flashing the juopunubear hboot
3.Almost all roms comes with beats audio and heck you can over clock your processor
first start with ARHD..as it has pre guided guide on how to flash it
just follow the below guide post #2 (only post #2 ...don't worry of firmware ..you've already got what is needed ) to flash custom recovery and then ARHD (read the guide to the letter)
FLASH ARHD XE ROM

Hi guys!
I hope it's not a problem I opened a new thread but I haven't really found a fully answered topic to my question. (I might be blind, anyway...)
So I own a Vodafone UK Branded HTC Sensation. I am thinking to root the device. I do not want to use any custom rom, I'm happy with the official one (at the moment...) and I would only like to have "ROOT Access". So, am I right that I do not need to "S-OFF"?
In this case as I understand:
1.) I have to unlock bootloader (HTCdev)
2.) Follow this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1632553 to root the device
Is that right?
After the root had been done, will I be able to remove all the applications, boot image... pre-installed by Vodafone? (Kind of "de-brand" the device) Or will I be able to install a "EU RUU" or only the "Vodafone RUU". I'm really sorry if I'm totally wrong but I have been reading the threads for couple of weeks now and I already got absolutely confused... I appreciate any help, explanation. Thank you very much in advance!

Hi,
From having a quick look at the guide in the link you don't even need to unlock the bootloader via HTCdev. Just follow the guide. I personally unlocked my bootloader and S-off'd via revolutionary.io who did a great job of beating HTCdev to the punch within months of the sensation coming out.
Here's a "Super noob guide to unlocking bootloader and s-off" which may ease your confusion. Although for the HTC Rezound , the concept for all HTC Bootloaders is the same, Just don't follow that guide verbatim otherwise bad things may happen.
You should be able to de-bloat ( probably the search term you want to use ) your rom after root. There's also a guide for carrier unlocking knocking around somewhere which I also did, Unlocking it from 3UK grips
Good Luck
You could have probably asked your questions in the guide thread but meh, no one died and I don't think anyone's losing sleep over this post at least you've spent some time trying to figure it out on your own before calling for help
