Once HTC releases the kernel source code for the Inspire, then the work on a CM 7 compatible kernel can begin.
If you want to play around with it, you can install the DHD version. It runs quite well besides having no audio. The source code is needed to build a kernel that supports the inspires audio.

How long after releasing a device is the manufacturer supposed to release the source code? I'm not too familiar with the whole open source thing
HTC is quite good about it. Usually a couple of weeks or so.

Yeah I hear you. I've never had a device that was really supported (loaded it on my Streak, but next to nothing worked). I've always flashed my friends devices with it and I'm quite jealous. lol
Good news is that they plan to support it. If you go to their forums they've added the Inspire to the Desire HD.
This is great news I have also installed a ton of cm7 on all of my buddies phones and can't wait to actually run it myself.

What is it that htc does or doesn't do that makes so many of its phones compatible with cm? Or does the cm crew simply prefer to support htc phones compared to others?

well, for starters, they use the standard mtd partition layout (unlike Samsung who uses bml) which means the "fastboot" commands can work. on top of that, their devices are also usually extraordinarily similar between generations which leads to most of the exploits and such working on multiple phones. so you have a LARGE number of devices being worked on by a LARGE number of developers with extreme similarities. this leads to a lot of tools working on multiple devices (the Inspire is actually a good example of this, seeing as how it's basically a Desire HD... it's even got the Ace codename--same as the Desire HD) which makes the rapid pace of development understandable.
Add to the fact that htc and tmobile (who had the first android phone which also happened to be htc) both encourage this "hobbyist" attitude from the developer community on non-dev phones (all dev phones were htc until the Neuxs S... G1/ADP, Magic/Ion, Nexus One... and they are almost entirely open source from my understanding) to both encourage people to buy their phones and also to ENJOY their phones. HTC provides software they consider to be the best "overall user experience" and I think that means they provide android (usually with Sense UI) so that it will appeal to the widest range of people. But then there are people who want that vanilla UI without buying the dev phone (such as myself and possibly you) and I'm betting htc doesn't want to actively discourage people having this option because it means improved sales from the hobbyist community. Now I have no inside info, but I'm sure the only exploits and such that they patch are security vulnerabilities (which are the ones exploited to get root). htc even fixed cyanogen's personal Nexus One due to a faulty power button even though his "hackery" voids the warranty. Tmobile provided/collaborated with cyanogenmod with the theme-ing engine for CM7. This history of collaboration between google, htc, tmobile, and the developer community has led to strong ties and familiarity with the platform.
tl;dr:
tmobile likes having the developers on their service because it means more subscribers; htc likely wants to appeal to both the average consumer and the developers so offers an out of the box experience that most can enjoy (Sense) but doesn't actively try to discourage developers.

I'm curious, will the Sensation ever get ICS? I mean the device should be able to handle it right? It's not like its a lightweight contendor that can't hold its own with the "big boys".
I'm also not talking about ports but rather an actual release by HTC/Google?
I've read that ICS is supposed to "unite" all android phones under one OS so that it won't be staggered like it is now

As soon as google makes the ics source public. The cm team will start working on cm8 which will definitely come out for the sensation
Sent from my Sensation using XDA App
It hasn't been confirmed but HTC has always been pretty good with their updates.
Well once we get ICS, HTC would probably have to make SENSE work on it ( cause we all know HTC doesn't want us using vanilla roms )
Even if the Sensation doesn't get ICS through an update someone will port the ROM to work with the phone anyway. So yes, in time we will get ICS no matter what.
Maybe stupid question, but what is the ICS?

No one can really "confirm" whether or not we will ever be upgraded with an official version of the next version of android OS, but knowing HTCs track record to device support, there's a pretty good chance.
Either way though, htc loves throwing sense over everything anyway, so it's really not a big deal for me if they do. Right now we're using Gingerbread with a Sense overlay, if we get upgraded, we'll just be using ICS with a Sense overlay...not a totally huge difference in the eyes of the end user.
I would much rather see an ICS port on xda. It'll likely come out sooner, and, like pretty much everything else on xda, will run better than what HTC comes out with anyway.
To HTC's credit, their rom releases are pretty decent compared to their competitors. But yes, sense lengthens the release window and adds months to development.
The Sensation is practically guaranteed Ice Cream Sandwich, but it likely won't be updated for several months after its release.
There were very minimal visual updates between gingerbread and froyo so huge sense UI overhauls weren't needed (they basically just added functionality) if the ics updates are as huge as everyone believes and hopes I'm sure sense will also include a massive overhaul. (For example if the ics launcher includes the 'holographic' interface it would idiotic imho for HTC not include that in there updated sense launcher)

ICS is supposed to be optimized for dual core use, as well, so I would think that would add a little more credence to the idea that the Sensation will get it.

I just bought a Sensation, and I hope they will port ICS, but my Tattoo is running Gingerbeard smoothly (no as smoothly as in the Sensation, but as smoothly as it runs donut) and it's not oficial, because officially "Tattoo can't handle Android 2.0".
Hi,
Going to upgrade from my Legend to a Sensation this weekend, just hoping someone could chime in, Was curious if Sensation will get an upgrade to Ice Cream when it comes out! Thanks!
Can't see any reason why not. We all got the latest Gingerbread update eventually, so I reckon there will be a phased release of ICS.
The Sensation absolutely should get ICS. Expect a slew of improvements with it too, especially true dual-core support and in general an OS that can match the hardware this phone has.
I did exactly the same upgrade as you and have not regretted my decision, In some way shape or form we WILL get ICS
Definitely must get, because there is an agreement between google and htc regarding os updates, i don't remember the period .

http://androidcommunity.com/htc-desire-android-2-3-gingerbread-update-released-20110801/
No...Just like Google can remotely remove applications from your device, they can remotely wipe any device...Each one of those Nexus S devices were normally accounted for...When that video leaked all they had to do was do a head count and see (for the sake of conversation we'll say prototype 7) Prototype 7 was missing and wipe it. They have all the information and all to lock it and also have it tied to admin permissions which we all can do on any device running 2.3. It was part of the Enterprise update for business on GB.
Will we get ICS?? I doubt anytime soon, as HTC takes forever embedding Sense into the damn framework and they will NEVER release a non Nexus device without Sense. So if we do you can bet your arse it will be at the most about April/May before we see it.

I was thinking about this. Didn't they say that Google are responsible for OS updates from ICS and not the handset manufacturers as they got pissed with HTC/Samsung etc taking forever to release stuff?
So does that mean all phones released on ICS and beyond will be from Google or that they will have doen the testing and given to HTC to give to us mere mortals on decent Gingerbread phones? Who knows but i'm betting HTC screw us with at least a 6 month wait.

Judging from past experience, if you are asking for a official HTC ICS update for the Sensation, the answer is "very likely" but you probably have to wait a long time.
Typically, when a new version of Android is released, HTC wouldn't update its existing devices to the new version until a few months after it has shipped a whole line of new devices with the new Android version. And because of it having to port Sense over to the new Android build, it would also take HTC quite some time to come up with new devices for the new Android build.
But if you don't need Sense, you will surely get ICS on Sensation. I'm sure Cyanogenmod will be one of the earlier available and full-feature ICS roms. They release their version of Gingerbread for the Nexus One even before Google pushes stock Gingerbread to it.
it seems every single day at the moment there is a new rom in the dev section, having a sensation seems to be finally paying off.

Ok I am I missing something or has every post in this thread missed something? Development is not just making custom ROMs. Don't get me wrong custom ROMs are great but with Qualcomm releasing the driver binaries for the Adreno 2xx Snapdragon processors., and the work being done on making the Sensation unbrickable. The Sensation is on the path to be a very valuable development device which means it is going to be open to loads of development. I would even dare say it has a capability to reach some of the level of development that the HD2 has. The driver binaries is enough on it's own as it opens up the possibility of custom bootloaders and booting of different OS's on the Sensation, I mean we do have S-off, and a official unlock from HTC Dev. Either one of these can be compared to HSPL for the HD2, without it non of the thing achieved on the HD2 would have every happened. Then you have the unbrickable work being done, this will make developers really want it because they know they have somewhat of a earth net and can revive the Sensation if they make a mistake and have to revive it. Even the legendary HD2 has never reached this status......

You mean natively (as in booting straight to Ubuntu) or within Android? I use BackTrack 5 in Android, it was a fun ride but I have a Galaxy Tab 10.1 anyway so meh. If its native though, that would be awesome.
Also to the guy that I didn't feel like quoting who mentioned that multiple OSes on the Sensation in his mild rant; we would barely even have much of a chance to do such a thing. The closest we could do is Boot 2 Gecko, since the drivers are pretty much cross compatible. The Galaxy S II has it.

I'm not worried about it. The dev's at this site could run a ics on a toaster...
If your rooted already, you wouldn't get the update anyways right?

After all the problems that the Gingerbread update had, would you want an official ICS update? Not me, no thank you.
OEM updates cost money to the service providers. I wasn't shocked at all that the DHD was getting it and the I4G wasn't.
Follow the link in my sig for an AOSP ICS ROM that makes a great daily driver.
I still don't understand why these kind of threads continue to pop up around these parts...it's been known AT&T won't give the Inspire ICS. It has been known that the Desire will get it. It has or at least should be known that a handful of devs are pumping out ARs of ICS for the Inspire. It's a known fact that there are literally 10 threads about this same topic that ends the same way: The Inspire isn't getting it but its getting it anyway because the Devs are freakin schweeeeet.

HTC is probably going to support the Desire HD for at least 18 months, it was their flagship at some point, so support will continue until it's specs are limited in some way that doesn't allow further upgrades (The Desire's internal storage was way too small to permit GB Sense or ICS Sense to be loaded.)

Pretty much as soon as proper camera support comes out I'm sold on one of the ICS roms out there. And even then its just video camera that they dont have working right, still camera has come a long way.
Been using RCMix 4.0 since November when capy stopped developing it, and it's truly a masterpiece. I'd never even consider using something AT&T put together over our devs. There are some true artists out there.
