[Q] Should I get a Desire S? - HTC Desire S

I broke my Desire Z recently and I am thinking of getting a used phone for around 250 SGD, the HTC desire s caught my eye, I love my old desire z, but the low ram keeps bothering me, Since the desire s is just a desire z without the keyboard and has more ram, I'm thinking of getting it. I am now deciding between the desire HD and the desire s, I like the desire s screen better since it is slcd. But I've heard that the desire s has emmc chip problems, is it very common?

eMMC chip problems are far from common, and are present in the same quantity around all the HTC line based on MSM8x55 and having 2GB of internal memory - which covers DHD, MT4G, DS, and of course your previous DZ/G2, which has exactly the same eMMCs.
If you can get it cheap - it's a great phone.

Is this phone getting official ics?
How smooth is the phone when running a custom rom like affinity? Is it as smooth as the real sensation xl? Cuz they have the same hardware, just that sensation xl clocks a little higher

I personally dont recommend it. Its nothing I can complain about the phone. Its fast like hell, Im proud of owning it, seriously. I recommended it when ppl asked me about a phone. But seeing what is about to come, if I were you I would wait a bit, raise some money so I could affront the endless quantity I would to spend in the HTC One X.
But I repeat: Its my point of view (In fact, is what Im going to do), the rest is up to you

I agree with Rostwildch here, as much as I love my Desire S you have the One X and the One S coming soon, the last one a little more cheap.
Performance wise they'll be above the Desire S a bit.
Good shopping!

I agree with everyone too.
The Desire S is a fantastic phone. But in my opinion, its more or less the same as the Z, not much of an upgrade.
If you can wait, get the One series.. they will be epic!

But I have no money for a new phone, I'm getting a used desire s

It's something you have to decide for yourself, like olyloh6696 said it's not that much of an upgrade.
Even if you're not buying it new it might be quite some money being spent.. personally I'd wait, but that's my view on things. You have to have yours.

Yes, it is. HTC posted it on their Facebook-Site.
About the ROM: I normaly run CM7 Nighlies und since yesterday CM9 Alpha on ICS.
without any problems.
If I compare CM7 to the Original ROM it is much better and smoother than sense.

"A little" is by factor of 1.5 - not "little" by any standard. Sensation XL also has CPU with 2 cores, and of a little better kind. Calling Desire S "the same hardware" is far from truth - Sensation XL is ~2.5 times more powerful.

Sorry, but you're wrong. The sensation XL has the same CPU as the Desire S but it it factory clocked to 1.5GHz. It is essentially the same phone, which is why we have many ROMs, such as Endymion, based on the Sensation XL.

Yes, indeed confused with Sensation XE. Sorry.

I can just OC it to 1.5 ghz and the desire s will be same phone as Sensation xl. How much free ram is there when running sense 3.5 roms?

its ram is even more than htc V one......

Yes, Desire S is supposed to get official ICS, but with Sense 3.6, not 4.
Not even 4 lite, like in the Primo S ROMs...

What's the sensation xl getting? Sense 3.6 or 4.0? Cuz if its 4.0, the devs can grab the sensation xl based rom and port it over to this device and it should run smoothly

Sensation and XE already got a sense 3.6 with android 4.0.3.Sense 4.0 might be ported later, if HTC decide to port it.

Why to get a Sensation?

Ok, as a current Desire user I'm getting more and more tempted to switch to a Sensation (and seeing as a lot of Desire devs are jumping ship to other devices).
Anyone care to give me some reasons for making the switch? I've had my trusty Desire for over 18 months but I'm getting itchy fingers to get something new? So...
Why get a Sensation?
Thanks.
I think that's a question for you to answer. Do you see any features in the Sensation that you want that are not available in the Desire?
If yes, are these features important enough for you to decide to switch phones?
If yes, switch. If no, don't.
Sensation is a good phone, but every phone has its quirks and every opinion is relative. Take all biased reviews and suggestions with several grains of salt. Good luck!

Because it looks great. Really. With a Casemate Tough case (which are fantastic) it feels really sturdy.
I would wait until the nexus comes out before deciding, that way you won't be kick yourself later when u realize u like it better than the Sensation.
The reason I love the Sensation is because of the resolution and speed. And it works the way I want it to.

I had the desire before I recently upgraded to the sensation. I've had the sensation for 6 weeks now.
Reasons to upgrade:
Larger screen 4.3 inches
Dual core processor
768mb of ram
1gb of app memory
Sense 3.0 interface
8 megapixel camera with dual led flash
1080p video recording
Noise canceling mic for phone calls
Up to 14.4 Mbps download speeds
Front facing camera for video calls

In my opinion, yes.
My Vibrant always ran slower than my glacier, even when both have identical cm7 setups and oc. Ram was the missing link.
My glacier with oc runs better than sensation without, even though the glacier is only a single core.
Both glacier and sensation have 768mb ram.

I upgraded to sensation because the physical buttons on my desire started to get loose and weren't responsive. Very happy with it so far, mostly notice the much bigger screen (like a pocket tablet) and sense 3.0. Build quality is very sturdy and design is beautiful/minimal, exactly what I was looking for. I would highly recommend it if you have the cash.

Totally agree but I guess at least it has some sort of front camera.
wait.
my advice is to wait if you can. The Sensation is limited. Its good for now, but with Ice cream sandwich coming soon HTC is going to put the Sensation and the Amaze in its rear view (if you are a T-mo customer). I was going to get the Amaze in march, but what is the point? Even the XE is a gimmick.
You don't want to wait for HTC to hand out the ICS upgrades either. Besides, the industry standard 1 gig RAM is not in the sensation and the internal storage is poor. There will be a phone that is up to par (with ICS) from HTC by April.

Is anyone else not a big fan of sense?

Or is it just me? I love the inquisition rom for this exact reason. IDK, I just don't like it very much. Am I in a lone group with this? What's everyone else's take?
i wish hTC makes their phones as simple as the galaxy nexus, that's why i will flash a "senseless" ICS ROM.
I love AOSP ROMs, not de-sensed ROMs as they contain parts of sense still in them. E.g OpenSensation, nice AOSP ROM...

That won't change the horrible Sense apps. Yes, you could root your phone install an AOSP rom, but you shouldn't have to do that to make your phone work like it's supposed it.
HTC/other OEMS should just give an option to de-sense the phone somehow. If I had a pure-Google experience I wouldn't even need to root my phone.
Again why buy HTC then. The hardware specs are available in many other phones. IMHO.

i bought it because of the qhd screen, also i like my devices to have some weight and feel sturdy something which other manufactures seem to not understand how to do
I like sense ...its gives the brand of HTC...I prefer look/feel and performance both so HTC with custom roms is perfect for me
Coming from iphone4 I used to have cheap opinion of android (yeah I know I'm little over my head when I had iPhone4) but once I got this little beast on my hands I'm baffled (the rich looking HTC sense and powerful beast inside)
I'm more than amazed ..may be I'm liking sense coz this is my first android phone but right now I feel like sense is a must for a HTC phone....when others look at my phone they'll just know its HTC

Normally I'd take AOSP over Sense any day, but these AOSP ROMs always have some large turnoff that I don't want to mess with. I've been pretty fine with Sense 4.0 though.

[Q] New desire s (memory app)

Hello! i am thinking to change my htc legend by a desire s, due the screen resolution and the memory dedicated to applications... my question is if a any user had problems to have few memory for applications, or if the space is enough to get all the applications you want without worrying about memory
Definitely, 1.1GB is plenty. Also the speed on the Desire S is much faster too

Better screen than Desire S, better camera, ICS out of the box and bound to get more updates
For myself i would look out for a newer device, which may gets further updates!

But that it will be. It won't even get newest Sense!

[Q] HTC sensation vs HTC one s

guys i have the option to get a new phone and im looking to get either the sensation for free or the one s. i just dont know if the one s is really worth the upgrade it or should i just stick with the sensation thats free till a better htc phone comes out?
im worried about development for the htc one s cause the sensation has a lot of support in this forum and a lot of roms and im scared the one s isnt gonna get as big as the sensation.. what are your takes?
thank you
I personally don't see any upside to the One S honestly. No storage extension, a non-removable battery, not a quad core. If you're looking for sense 4 the sensation has some stable and fast ported roms from the HTC One S.

Both are still qHD. Amoled or not is simply a matter of personal preference.
The One S not having quad core is in fact better. (S4 > T3) Pretty much the only thing that appeals to me is the S4 in the One S.

One S has much better camera if that is important to you. I mean the actual sensor itself. Great in low light situations. However you're stuck with about 10 gig of user space and that can be kind of crippling with no external sd card. With the Sensation I have a 32 gig sd card which is great but I wish my camera sensor was better. Especially in low light.
HTC really likes to stick us between a rock and a hard place sometimes!

You guys do realize that this thread is almost a year old, right?

Sensation successor.

First off I'd like to say that the sensation is probably the best choice I've ever made for a phone just because of the amount of development that is still happening to this day. And as much as I love this phone. Technology is moving too fast and I'm going to need an upgrade soon. What are some suggestions u guys could give me on making a decision for a phone with as much developmental success as the sensation.

If you want to stay on 4.3 inch, go One S. Want to go bigger? One X.
Hi,
I better ask you why you think an upgrade is needed. If you're bored from your current Sensation, then it's fine, but IMO there is no real need to upgrade to any current devices which allows you to do much more than your actual device. Even you can install Sense 4.0 custom roms if you like how One X and S look and feel.
On day to day usage I think there is no much difference from having 2 or 4 cores running on current Android version. If you like so much the new camera features on new HTC One devices, then it may be worth to upgrade now.
I will change my Sensation when new devices with Android 5.0 start to sell.
Only my 2 cents
I will skip this generation of new phones. I will wait for next year for full hd screens and all cool new stuff. I find the upgrade from the sensation to the X is not that huge.

Same complaint here, however, I recently installed a ROM that comes with xLoud which is a Mod and to be honest it has made my sensation gain at least, 30% more volume.
I usually don't believe in gimmicky Mods such as Bravia engine and such because they usually just don't make any difference but I can assure that xLoud is definitely working for me. You can also flash this mod found at the theme section individually.

Why do you want a fullhd display on a smartphone? It's just a waste of power..

Hi,
I better ask you why you think an upgrade is needed.

Ya I agree. I'm waiting on next year's 4.3" HTC phone. Wait for 1 to 3 months if I can hold on to sort out all the hardware issues

Well to be honest I have notice the difference on the speaker. I haven't really paid attention when listening through headset.

I can't think of any particular reason why 1080p would be impossible. I think it would certainly be possible, if not a complete waste. All the icons and other display items would have to be resized to not be so tiny on a phone screen, even a 5" screen. 720p already looks amazing even on the largest screens available right now. And even qHD is amazing on 4.3" devices, so 720p will be awesome for quite a while.
Overall though, I have to agree that it doesn't seem like anything this year is worth upgrading from the Sensation. Especially if you have it running at its proper 1.5 GHz processor speed and ICS. Unless you absolutely must have something like NFC or a quad core (nearly useless, as stated earlier). Next year should hopefully show off some new things worth going after though.
If you must upgrade soon though, I have to agree that the HTC One S or the Galaxy S3 will be your best choices. Unless HTC is secretly working on something amazing in the next few months, I don't see any other options worth upgrading to.

Toshiba showed off a 6.1" screen with a res of 2560 x 1600 (498 ppi) a couple months ago.
Ortustech showed off a 4.8" 1920 x 1080 (448 ppi) about 7-8 months ago.
While at those high ppi figures, eyes can't discern individual pixels - you would be able to tell an overall difference.

I wouldn't be so sure. The MSM8260A (MSM8960 without LTE - used in One S) has the 42 Mbps radio integrated, and it would do wonders for battery life. I wouldn't be surprised if T-Mobile opted to use that SoC in their SIII.
