[Q] Google Music 4.x is slow and uses a lot of battery - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
No matter the rom (ICS) I use (Gummy, CyberGR MOd, PixelRom 1.60...) + google music app (4.1.152 and 4.1.153) + Eugene kernel 7 or Air kernel.
When I say slow I mean the browsing through files or, eg, when showing recent music Thumbnail... it takes year to show up. And when I press play it takes a lot of time to start the track.
Go a lot of battery drain too and when i play music and the cell getting hot.
it's acting like HDD with a lot of random access with poor data rate transfer...kind of wierd
any idea?
PS: did try to format the sd

Weird, because I've been using Google Music 4 since it came out and became my primary music player. I have no issue with the music app.

Are you playing music from the cloud?
The long loading times and pictures being shown slowly are because its downloading them to your device from the cloud.
And again, it takes a few seconds to play because it's streaming from the cloud.
So in this case, your internet must not be that great.
This is all assuming of course, you are using it to play from the cloud.

no i'm not. all mp3 are on my nand.
Bu Well, for nown it's fixed... made yet an other install (Gummy 0.8.2 + Google music 4.1.153 since a don't like the old music app form CM7 + Eugene's kernel).
Don't know what happen tbh since i did not changed anything in my way of installing a custom rom.
Maybe it's linked to an app I use for some reason.

Req NEW Honeycomb Music Player

A new version has been ported and released on the Evo, with cloud sync working. Would love it on my Inc. running SR3.5
Do you have a link?
hey fellas,
i don't think the app is new. a user over in the Evo section noticed that after flashing the latest CM7 build and replacing the stock Music.apk with the Honeycomb music app already floating around his sych/cloud services started to work:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=980018
Here's a link to the Honeycomb Music apk:
http://www.mediafire.com/?j73zh5ld7bpcbqn
I installed it and it worked for me and my music synced in the cloud!
wait, so its already working for our Inc's? Does it have lock screen controls? That was another thing missing from the first leaked version. Also does it improve the volume levels at all? I have to listen at full volume for some songs. Im dying for a new music player, stock one is so bland.
I am not sure about the lock screen controls but I was able to install the apk and it played all the music

Does the cloud sync work?
anyone know how to get ringtones, system sounds, (non music) to stop showing up in the music app? i would like to see only music
I wouldn't recommend this app to anyone quite yet, it has a lot of bugs I noticed after just a couple minutes:
1) No lock screen controls
2) Notification shows content://media/external/...blah blah instead of the song name
3) The pause/next feature present while browsing your library disappears once you hit next (it's possible this was intentional but I tend to believe it's always supposed to be there so you can keep skipping while browsing)
4) Pure music widget crashes when trying to launch app (may be related to #5, not sure).
5) Not sure why, but after I tapped the notification a few times, now I can't even use it. Every time I play a song, it skips to the next one and keeps skipping every second or two to the next song. A reboot did not resolve the issue. The album art displays "buffering" before it skips, so maybe it has something to do with cloud sync, which I didn't play around with, other than selecting my google account in the settings.

Pure music never worked with Gingerbread according to my experience.
One more problem/thing I overlooked: what about shuffle and repeat?
Thanx for the info Xidexl, thats all I needed to know. Guess ill stick with stock. Hopefully new SR will come with a new player.
Couldn't we just rip the final version off of the xoom then that would fix the issues we're having with bugs and I've also seen the one on the xoom and it seems to be a bit different

[Q] Source of ICS ROM lag: Google Music?

Hi all,
I've been jumping between different ICS ROM bakes to find the one that suits me best, and have had to change some because they've become so laggy after running for a week or two, and I couldn't figure out why.
I'm currently on CyberGR's ROM v7 and it works great on my phone with SIO and lulzactivev2 CPU setup, no overclock, 18hrs+ with medium to heavy usage. Perfect.
But this morning, my MP3s started to skip and the phone was lagging and taking a second or two to notice each keypress.
The one thing I'd done, is sign in to Google Music (previously, I hadn't even started the app as I always use the widget).
I immediately told it to hide my online music, and tried to disable any sync'ing of the 20,000 tracks I have in Google Music, but it just sat there, lagging, 100% CPU, and a spinning circle.
Force-killing the App made no difference either. The phone was just lagging constantly, even though Music.apk was no longer running.
Reboot. Wait for it to settle... lag.
It just wouldn't go away.
So, I opened the App Info on Google Music, cleared all App Data and it's App Cache, and boom. Lag gone.
Open up Google Music, intro about online music, etc - press Back to ignore - play MP3s, all playing smoothly...
Has anyone else experienced this?
Does having a large online Google Music library mean I can't have it linked on my phone?
Is there a way to stop it asking me to sign in every time I start up Google Music?
I can start it via the widget, then open it... but the widget might not be on the track I want to listen to
Settings. Accounts and sync. Uncheck google music.
Now why didn't I think of that... hadn't noticed it hiding at the bottom of the Sync list.
Yup - lag is gone... Ok, that was easy!
Thanks
But does of course mean that I can't use the online Google Music thing... but hey, better then a nag screen I 'spose!

"Mediaserver" battery heavy, ICS 4.0.3

Can anyone tell me what this is? And why could it be using so much battery?? I'm running bugless pete 4.0.3.

Mediaserver is the thingy providing media playback. (Generally player tells mediaserver to play music and it does). Listenong to the music a lot? Watching movies?

Normally when I'm driving it's pretty much my iPod.
Do you download stuff on your phone? Media server handles your downloads too

Try disabling Google Photo sync in your sync settings.. I remember reading somewhere else here that it's part of the media server thing. I listen to allot of music on the bus and while biking. Media sever dropped a bit after disabling this but not much...
Hey guys, No I dont download stuff on my phone ever. I just play music that's it. I'll try disabling anything media related and report back
Hi to everybody! So glad I found this post...hopefully this is going to give me some tips about that cause this is getting so annoying
I own a nexus s i9020 (I know...wrong section..sorry) with ics 4.0.4 (I guess the last 4 doesn't matter) and I'm used to play some music with the official Google music app....after about an hour "mediaserver" has taken the 30% while the music app only takes 20%
Any advice about it?!
Thanks
Hey You're not alone. Same issue here with 4.0.4 AOKP Crespo. Really annoying..
You do realize those percentages have to add up to 100 right(along with cell standby and phone idle and whatever else used the battery in that time frame)? I listen to GM on my way to work and my percentages are about the same. It may have to do with the media scanner searching for the files or something like that. I don't really know, but those numbers seem correct if ALL you're doing is listening to music. If you didn't use the phone, it'd probably be split up between just cell standby and phone idle. Now if you weren't actually using any media and it showed up on your usage chart, then I would be concerned.
same thing, all sync things are disabled, wifi/3g - off
music player and any other apps - killed
but media server still working and using about 40% of battery and loading cpu up to 90%
what to do?
phone - nexus s i9023
Always with ICS 4.0.3 ? Update it to the 4.0.4 version

[Q] MP3 Files do not show up on music players - CM10 9/23

Hi Guys,
My phones media players no not show any MP3 files stored on my memory card or internal memory. I have them in the music folder. I have tried wiping cache, flasing the ROM. also tried deleting the .nomedia files that i could find. so far the music players i have tried are
winamp,doubletwist and Apollo
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
I had this problem once upon a time. I use Poweramp and that played mp3's, only bad thing is you have a trial period then have to buy it. What ROM are you running? When I got to JB for some reason most music players couldn't read mp3's. I could use a file explorer and open it up, but it would tell me the file type is not compatible, or something like that.
Sent from my SGH-I997 using xda app-developers app
yeah.. pretty much the same story for me.. file explorer can open it up with winamp sometimes... havent tried poweramp yet... im currently on CM 10 (JB) with the 9/23 build.
okay so i did a factory reset, wipe cache, wipe davlik cache and reinstalled the latest CM 10 version (thanks for that scott ) but still the same problem... i cant seem to figure out how to fix this. :S
Again, if you haven't tried poweramp I would suggest trying the trial version to see if it solves your problem. I just opened up the Apollo music player and it didn't list half my songs. Some of these music players just are not compatible with .MP3 files.

Thanks for the TIP... I actually did try poweramp. since it is folder based it plays the songs without any issues. My problem is that all the other players (winamp, apollo, etc..) used to play all my songs till just a few days ago... that's why im trying to figure out where it went wrong. and just FYI i tried other folder based players and they all seem to play the songs.
I believe its something to do with the media scanning on android.
If you're on Jellybean and use Camera360, the C360 files in your DCIM folder don't play well with JB media scanner. Delete or move them to your computer. You can't change the file name and get rid of C360, you have to just put up with your photos being gone...

could be media scanner derpage, are you having lag or battery life issues?

mmhh... i dont have any noticeable lag. Actually since the latest cm10 release its been pretty darn smooth.. But im getting around 10 to 12 hours of battery with moderate use. on 2G only and wifi enabled. Im not so sure on how that is comparatively

battery life can be all over the place depending on the cell signal and the modem, but that's less than i get with 3g and hspa on, it's not necessarily less than others get. if you get a logcat and see media scanner throwing errors it can be the battery life issue (assuming there is one) and the missing files issues. you might have broken files or if you have a ton of files the scanner might just be locking up when the phone sleeps. if mediascaller is throwing errors on a logcat try a fresh flash and set the phone to stay awake while charging, put the phone on a charger and walk away till the media scanner finishes. (a half hour should be more than enough) but if you have broken files you might have to do some cleaning.

Google Play Music: All Music Vs. On Device

I have a question for anyone using Google Play music. Has anyone else noticed that when playing music using All Music uses much more battery than just On Device even if ALL of your music is on your device. I've noticed that in my data usage screen Google Play Music stays as the highest consumer of data which makes no sense as all my music is locally stored. Chrome or Play Store should be the highest user of data. I am only playing music that is store on my SD card and have noticed a time or two that when fast forwarding in a song it'll buffer as if it's streaming. I've also went to play a song a couple times and noticed it buffering as well. Anyone else seen this????
has your music been uploaded as well as saved to the device? if so it may not have recognized that.
thats the only theory I have as I had an album on my device that got uploaded but it kept them separate. The only way I could tell is if i went to save to device and it was blacked out.
Yeah the music is both saved to the phone via usb transfer and has been uploaded onto the Google servers. But yeah it seems like it is keeping them separated for some reason ei. if the song is both on the phone and on the server when All Music is chosen it prefers to play from the server instead of the phone storage.
Maybe try just downloading the music to your device and get rid of the stuff you manually saved. Not sure how many files we are talking here. And naturally, you would want to do this via wifi
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
I've thought about that but we're talking about 20GB+ of music. lol Which really wouldn't be a big deal except that after any clean flash of a ROM I'd have to redownload everything again.
Then there's no point on having your music on the cloud
Sent from my Nexus 5 using xda app-developers app
That's how Google wants it though. It seems the only way to get album art working on the My Library widget is to upload your local music to google's servers but it seems in this case it is then streaming those files instead of using the local ones.

^^^^Exactly, this is why I uploaded to the cloud^^^^ Even if I used id editors or album art editors after every rom flash I'd have to go back and reinput album art that was missing. At least this way the art stays. I do think I've found the culprit though. I had been using Bank's core gapps on SlimKat which requires you yo download most Google apps through the Play Store as this gapps package contains minimal apps. After using SlimKat's gapps again which has Google Play music as a system app and not a user app, it seems to have gone away. It really shouldn't matter how the app is installed but it seems to have helped.

I've searched the issue after running into it myself and there are unresolved forum posts all over about it. Even using Album grabbers to replace already existing art hasn't got the widget to show anything but blank squares for some including myself. Of course while listening to the music the album art works normally and replaces the lock screen.
Editing the ID tags might do the trick you say?
