Google Play Music: All Music Vs. On Device - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a question for anyone using Google Play music. Has anyone else noticed that when playing music using All Music uses much more battery than just On Device even if ALL of your music is on your device. I've noticed that in my data usage screen Google Play Music stays as the highest consumer of data which makes no sense as all my music is locally stored. Chrome or Play Store should be the highest user of data. I am only playing music that is store on my SD card and have noticed a time or two that when fast forwarding in a song it'll buffer as if it's streaming. I've also went to play a song a couple times and noticed it buffering as well. Anyone else seen this????

has your music been uploaded as well as saved to the device? if so it may not have recognized that.
thats the only theory I have as I had an album on my device that got uploaded but it kept them separate. The only way I could tell is if i went to save to device and it was blacked out.

Yeah the music is both saved to the phone via usb transfer and has been uploaded onto the Google servers. But yeah it seems like it is keeping them separated for some reason ei. if the song is both on the phone and on the server when All Music is chosen it prefers to play from the server instead of the phone storage.

Maybe try just downloading the music to your device and get rid of the stuff you manually saved. Not sure how many files we are talking here. And naturally, you would want to do this via wifi

I've thought about that but we're talking about 20GB+ of music. lol Which really wouldn't be a big deal except that after any clean flash of a ROM I'd have to redownload everything again.

Then there's no point on having your music on the cloud

That's how Google wants it though. It seems the only way to get album art working on the My Library widget is to upload your local music to google's servers but it seems in this case it is then streaming those files instead of using the local ones.

^^^^Exactly, this is why I uploaded to the cloud^^^^ Even if I used id editors or album art editors after every rom flash I'd have to go back and reinput album art that was missing. At least this way the art stays. I do think I've found the culprit though. I had been using Bank's core gapps on SlimKat which requires you yo download most Google apps through the Play Store as this gapps package contains minimal apps. After using SlimKat's gapps again which has Google Play music as a system app and not a user app, it seems to have gone away. It really shouldn't matter how the app is installed but it seems to have helped.

I've searched the issue after running into it myself and there are unresolved forum posts all over about it. Even using Album grabbers to replace already existing art hasn't got the widget to show anything but blank squares for some including myself. Of course while listening to the music the album art works normally and replaces the lock screen.
Editing the ID tags might do the trick you say?

Req NEW Honeycomb Music Player

A new version has been ported and released on the Evo, with cloud sync working. Would love it on my Inc. running SR3.5
Do you have a link?
hey fellas,
i don't think the app is new. a user over in the Evo section noticed that after flashing the latest CM7 build and replacing the stock Music.apk with the Honeycomb music app already floating around his sych/cloud services started to work:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=980018
Here's a link to the Honeycomb Music apk:
http://www.mediafire.com/?j73zh5ld7bpcbqn
I installed it and it worked for me and my music synced in the cloud!
wait, so its already working for our Inc's? Does it have lock screen controls? That was another thing missing from the first leaked version. Also does it improve the volume levels at all? I have to listen at full volume for some songs. Im dying for a new music player, stock one is so bland.
I am not sure about the lock screen controls but I was able to install the apk and it played all the music

Does the cloud sync work?
anyone know how to get ringtones, system sounds, (non music) to stop showing up in the music app? i would like to see only music
I wouldn't recommend this app to anyone quite yet, it has a lot of bugs I noticed after just a couple minutes:
1) No lock screen controls
2) Notification shows content://media/external/...blah blah instead of the song name
3) The pause/next feature present while browsing your library disappears once you hit next (it's possible this was intentional but I tend to believe it's always supposed to be there so you can keep skipping while browsing)
4) Pure music widget crashes when trying to launch app (may be related to #5, not sure).
5) Not sure why, but after I tapped the notification a few times, now I can't even use it. Every time I play a song, it skips to the next one and keeps skipping every second or two to the next song. A reboot did not resolve the issue. The album art displays "buffering" before it skips, so maybe it has something to do with cloud sync, which I didn't play around with, other than selecting my google account in the settings.

Pure music never worked with Gingerbread according to my experience.
One more problem/thing I overlooked: what about shuffle and repeat?
Thanx for the info Xidexl, thats all I needed to know. Guess ill stick with stock. Hopefully new SR will come with a new player.
Couldn't we just rip the final version off of the xoom then that would fix the issues we're having with bugs and I've also seen the one on the xoom and it seems to be a bit different

[Q] Android software that would work as a music store and apps. I.E. Itunes, Zune...

I just wanted to know if there was any talk ever about software that would help me manage my phone and maybe that i could get music from?
Use Android Music to manage your music files and Amazon Music to buy the music.
It just seems weird that Google wouldnt do that especially with this device I saw called the Samsung Galaxy 5. When I found that, it prompted my original question because it is marketed as a music player.
I read somewhere they are working on adding a music store to the Google Music app

Check out media monkey. It allow for syncing to android devices. And only runs one background process (when running).. unlike iTunes which runs four at all times.

[Mirror][app] TinyShark 3.1.5 (Groveshark client)

Update: I hadn't realized the original developer still has this on their website. I searched Google before but didn't find any place to download, that's why I posted the mirror. But later on I stumbled upon it. The developer's site is http://exigocs.com you can also download TinyShark Downloader from there.
It's no longer available on Play Store, but I downloaded it shortly after I got Android. I then discovered soon after it was removed from Play Store, so it has since lived on my sdcard with TitaniumBackup, since I did a lot of ROM flashing.
Despite not being updated for over a year, it works great on Jelly Bean , and is still is one of the best Grooveshark apps for android I've ever tried, with playlists, offline cache option, and more.
With offline cache, you can effectively use this as a mobile Grooveshark downloader. It dumps the songs into sdcard/tinyshark_songs/ where they have id3 tags, but are just named a bunch of numbers. You could cache them 1 at a time, then go there and rename the file to whatever you want, or you could just copy to your PC and use software to use id3 to name the files.
Here is the original description:
Listen to Grooveshark on your Android device for FREE.
- Search the Grooveshark database
- Import Grooveshark playlists
- Play individual songs or an entire playlist
- Cache songs for offline playback
Does NOT require Adobe Flash to play music (Settings -> Use Flash Player). TinyShark now does not need Flash for music playback, but it is still an option for those that find it works better.
Starting with version 3.0 a lot has changed under the hood. A lot of fixes are being made so check for updates often. If you are having problems try reinstalling and create a new shortcut in your launcher. If you are still having issues please email details and send any crash reports you can.
Thanks to everyone that's been emailing!
To download songs try Tinyshark Downloader also available in the market.
Taken from:
http://www.bestappsmarket.com/p/app?appId=8894&title=tinyshark
It really works much better with "Use Flash Player" unchecked. [You have to do that to enable Offline Cache]
The app id is com.exigo.tiny

Not connecting
I am experiencing some problems during the last month with this amazing app. It doesn't connect, when i try to connect i can see the 'connecting...' with the yellow light, but in a few seconds becomes again 'Disconnected' with the red light. Is it just me or this app is not working now?
I am having the same issue as well.
Try using tinytunes app from play store.
It's from the same developer but not related to grooveshark
It's pretty good.
As I am a new user I am not able to paste the link.

If you guys are having issues with 3.1.5 you need to first uninstall 3.1.5 and then update to 3.1.7 found on their website http://exigocs.com/. If you still have problems download and install tiny shark downloader.

I would consider this app *warez* for the fact it is used to steal music off a site that is know for being borderline legal anyways. There is a reason Google removed it from Play.
Just sayin.
Also, buy the music you like. Support your artists

Sadly, by buying music you're supporting the music industry (RIAA). By going to concerts you're supporting the artists.

Not the artists I listen to. I buy direct from them or their independent label.
If your music is controlled by the RIAA then you need to stop listening to USA Top 40 and go out and find real music.
Either way is better then supporting this app.
But back to why I brought this up, if XDA allows this app then why not all the other MP3 downloaders in the play Store?
Mod maybe answer?

How to setup squid Proxy for tinyshark for streaming?
Somehow my T-Mobile connection seems to be blocking the tinyshark connection. Whenever I use the T-Mo data connection, my tinyshark would immediately show disconnected.
I managed to setup a squid server so that it now shows "connected" ( squid log says TCP_HIT/200 1495 GET http://grooveshark.com/crossdomain.xml - NONE/- text/xml )
But the songs are not streaming...
Anyone has experience setting up squid for tinyshark that could share some insight?
Thanks!

[Q] Nexus 5 Won't Play WAV Voicemail attachments

Our phone system at my job sends voicemails as WAV attachments through our Exchange server when someone leaves a message on your extension. Even up to when I was on my Galaxy S3 I've had to install a third party audio player that supports WAV files to play these.
I recently discovered that Kit Kat (4.4) now plays these WAV attachments natively. I and two of my fellow IT teammates all purchased the N5 on release day but while both of their N5s will play them as expected, I get a popup that says "Sorry, cannot open this file". I tried a factory reset and only installed apps that weren't audio related, but still get the same message. Anyone else able to open WAVs or getting this error? How would I troubleshoot this? I also tried resetting all app defaults in the app manager to no avail.
Thanks in advance for any help with this. Minor annoyances are usually the ones that eat at me the most.
All of a sudden my phone has started doing this. I use to work fine with just Play Music installed and would just play the wav file from the email screen but it doesn't do it anymore.

This just started happening to me as well. Just minutes ago I went to play a voicemail I received through my Exchange email and had the same result. I even tried saving the .wav file but nothing will open it. I could probably install an audio player that will handle wav files, but I'm pretty sure this previously used to work fine.
Has anyone else experienced this, or have any ideas?

Its the same sort of thing for me as well, even if I download it it won't play. I think and this is only me guessing but its probably something to do with an update to Play Music since that is the only thing that has changed on my phone since it stopped working.

It looks like others have noticed similar things, such as here on a Motorola phone: https://forums.motorola.com/posts/fe2e143972
In that thread, two people reported that rolling back Play Music (and Quickoffice?) fixed the problem, while one person said that didn't fix it. I just tried it myself and still have the same problem after going back to the factory versions of Play Music and Quickoffice.
I also found that Google officially doesn't even list wav files as supported by Play Music: https://support.google.com/googleplay/answer/1100462
It looks like people are just installing other media players that will handle wav files... but I liked that I could play them directly in the email without even having to open another app...

I don't even have Quickoffice installed. I have tried a few different music players but for some reason they don't like to play it from within the email app.
I have this problem too with the copy of my voicemail that is delivered via MMS to Hangouts (see my thread here). Play Music and VLC just won't play them. Installed MX Player which opens and plays them without issue.

I am a new N5 owner, and have the same issue. This was my first major disappointment with the phone, coming from a N4. My N4 handled .wav voice mails native in the mail app, which I was excited about, coming from a HTC One S where I had to download each attachment and play it in an alternate app. I feel like I have moved backwards.
I have noticed for a very long time on my N5. In fact, not sure it was working from the very beginning. When trying to pick the WAV as attachment in Gmail, I'm presented with the native picker only a couple XBMC remote control apps. The odd thing is is that if I select that WAV from a file explorer app, such ES File Explorer, it presents many more apps with which to play the file, including Google Play Music itself, which then is played flawlessly in Google Play. I wonder why the native app picker doesn't present you with all the music player apps that are installed.
Mine definitely used to work... I was very surprised today when I found it didn't work anymore. I've had my Nexus 5 for over 3 months and I'm positive I've listened to voicemail email attachments during that time. Not sure what's up with this, but I'd really like this feature back...
I tried MX Player and many other players... some will open the file after saving it, but I couldn't make any work from email. Tapping on the attachment just says "Couldn't play the track you requested."
Sad to see this go too. I was playing .wav files through the native gmail app as well until just a few days ago. Now I get no app installed to open this file.
Ended up buying Wav Player by Dennis Lockshine. This app will play within the gmail app.
Same here on my nexus 5. Already had this issue back in december ended up fixing it when I rooted and reinstalled everything. Now the problem is back again.

I tried this the other day, with no luck. I even cleared the Play Music cache, rebooted, wiped cache and dalvik cache in TWRP, still nothing. After seeing your post I decided to just try a .wav voicemail again and now it actually works... I haven't changed anything since the other day. Really strange. I've disabled automatic updates to Play Music and will just leave it be for now, since this is working again...
For those for whom removing updates does not work, could it be that you're running a custom ROM or have a Gapps package with an update to the app that can't be reverted back to the version with which WAVs can be played from Gmail?

Help me find a music app

Up until a few months ago I always used the same music app an my phone. I never made a note of what it was called, it just said "music" on the app drawer and it had an "f" against like a purple and black background. I've hunted through all my saved apps and all the music apps on the Play store and I can't find it.
Can anyone help?
i think you should give some description about the app, it's easier to find the app with wanted features. I know many nice app on Play Store. :fingers-crossed:

I'd say it was probably a propitiatory app to your phone manufacturer?? What model of phone is it, that may help find your app faster?
Otherwise, there are A LOT of GREAT music apps out there... Several free, several cheap ($1-$2), and several expensive ($4-8). Several of the cost ones, have a free trial... I'd just keep installing and deleting them until you find you like....I just went through this a few weeks ago myself after using the same one for the past 3 years.
Been using Blackplayer for a while now. By far my favorite

It was definitely an app I downloaded as opposed to the installing directly from the Play Store so it would've been free. What I liked about was that it played every track on an album without having to select all the tracks in a folder first. It also had an auto resume feature which played your last listened to track from exactly where you left off. It also had a decent eq. And the app was made up of several pages, easily accessible by sweeping left or right. The graphics were pretty good too. I'm sure there are a good deal of similar music apps on the Play store but I don't want to have to install each one to find one which does as is expected.
Try Ubermusic. Take your download may through the Browser by searching the APK. It is very old but the design is neat.
