"Mediaserver" battery heavy, ICS 4.0.3 - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Can anyone tell me what this is? And why could it be using so much battery?? I'm running bugless pete 4.0.3.

Mediaserver is the thingy providing media playback. (Generally player tells mediaserver to play music and it does). Listenong to the music a lot? Watching movies?

Normally when I'm driving it's pretty much my iPod.

Do you download stuff on your phone? Media server handles your downloads too

Try disabling Google Photo sync in your sync settings.. I remember reading somewhere else here that it's part of the media server thing. I listen to allot of music on the bus and while biking. Media sever dropped a bit after disabling this but not much...

Hey guys, No I dont download stuff on my phone ever. I just play music that's it. I'll try disabling anything media related and report back

Hi to everybody! So glad I found this post...hopefully this is going to give me some tips about that cause this is getting so annoying
I own a nexus s i9020 (I know...wrong section..sorry) with ics 4.0.4 (I guess the last 4 doesn't matter) and I'm used to play some music with the official Google music app....after about an hour "mediaserver" has taken the 30% while the music app only takes 20%
Any advice about it?!
Thanks

Hey You're not alone. Same issue here with 4.0.4 AOKP Crespo. Really annoying..

You do realize those percentages have to add up to 100 right(along with cell standby and phone idle and whatever else used the battery in that time frame)? I listen to GM on my way to work and my percentages are about the same. It may have to do with the media scanner searching for the files or something like that. I don't really know, but those numbers seem correct if ALL you're doing is listening to music. If you didn't use the phone, it'd probably be split up between just cell standby and phone idle. Now if you weren't actually using any media and it showed up on your usage chart, then I would be concerned.

same thing, all sync things are disabled, wifi/3g - off
music player and any other apps - killed
but media server still working and using about 40% of battery and loading cpu up to 90%
what to do?
phone - nexus s i9023

Always with ICS 4.0.3 ? Update it to the 4.0.4 version

[Q] Given Priority to Winamp instead of Google Music? (non-rooted)

So when you hit play from a bluetooth device it seems to be pure luck as to which player will start on android.
Is there anyway to alter this behaviour? The phone in question isn't rooted, and won't be. Since this is the case I can only remove the updates to the Music player, but it's still there and will randomly take priority over winamp.
I've always experienced this no matter what media players I'm using. Sometimes it will just start playing on the regular app instead of the app i want

[Q] Google Music 4.x is slow and uses a lot of battery

Hi,
No matter the rom (ICS) I use (Gummy, CyberGR MOd, PixelRom 1.60...) + google music app (4.1.152 and 4.1.153) + Eugene kernel 7 or Air kernel.
When I say slow I mean the browsing through files or, eg, when showing recent music Thumbnail... it takes year to show up. And when I press play it takes a lot of time to start the track.
Go a lot of battery drain too and when i play music and the cell getting hot.
it's acting like HDD with a lot of random access with poor data rate transfer...kind of wierd
any idea?
PS: did try to format the sd
Weird, because I've been using Google Music 4 since it came out and became my primary music player. I have no issue with the music app.

Are you playing music from the cloud?
The long loading times and pictures being shown slowly are because its downloading them to your device from the cloud.
And again, it takes a few seconds to play because it's streaming from the cloud.
So in this case, your internet must not be that great.
This is all assuming of course, you are using it to play from the cloud.
no i'm not. all mp3 are on my nand.
Bu Well, for nown it's fixed... made yet an other install (Gummy 0.8.2 + Google music 4.1.153 since a don't like the old music app form CM7 + Eugene's kernel).
Don't know what happen tbh since i did not changed anything in my way of installing a custom rom.
Maybe it's linked to an app I use for some reason.

Bluetooth track information

Has anyone been able to get track metadata information over bluetooth on their S3, stock or otherwise? I can control play/pause/forward/back, but am not getting track info in my car. Anyone else run into this issue?
I have read it may have something to do with AVRCP 1.3 support.
In my car it shows information for music stored locally on the phone but streaming Pandora doesn't share Song information, but I can control music still.

Which app are you using for local music playback?
Currently using S3 in a 2012 Ford with Sync. No issues with track info with either locally stored files, or Pandora as long as I use the mobile apps command in Sync. Has worked well with stock, and with current setup with the unofficial CM10 nightlies with KT747 kernel.

Would like to know also, I have tried just about everything!
I remember reading that to be able to read track info thru Bluetooth you have to have the phone on USB mass storage mode which this phone doesn't have but there is a hack to change that I found here

I followed the above link and got it switched over but it still didn't do the trick.
My phone shares meta data as long as I'm used local music or Google play. If I use Pandora it won't stream the meta data. Although my girlfriends iPhone (sorry) does transmit Pandora meta data.

I'm on stock and have the exact same experience. it frankly sucks. I was considering flashing AOKP just to see if it worked, but looks like you're having the same problem too. Would love a solution.

Yeah. This head unit I ha e it my car is awesome, Kenwood ddx719, but it's tuned for iDevices. There is a Pandora app on the head unit that will control pa Dora completely, thumbs up/down songs etc, but is useless for Android. Meta data streams from Pandora on iPhone but not android. Also, my old phone didn't stream meta data from Pandora either so it's not just the S3.i think the meta data is on Pandora just not implementing it.

I have done tons of research and it seems that the S3 has AVRCP 1.3 for the native players but not for media streaming apps. AVRCP support needs to be implemented in a custom rom to be used. Apparently it was implemented in CM9 but not in CM10.

I have the same issue, no track info or anything in my '12 dodge charger. I have tried the stock player (which skipped and paused randomly all of the time) and I have tried playerpro with the the option enabled. I'm at a loss because it is pointless for me to stream it BT if I need to hold the phone in my lap.

from what I read on the Dodge Charger, no Verizon phones are compatible with their systems including the iPhone ...

Also annoyed with this.
Ford Sync does not show streaming information from Slacker.
I tried editing the audio.conf file in /etc/bluetooth/ to enable all interfaces but that sadly did nothing except strangely cause the audio to hiccup every few seconds.

[Q] MP3 Files do not show up on music players - CM10 9/23

Hi Guys,
My phones media players no not show any MP3 files stored on my memory card or internal memory. I have them in the music folder. I have tried wiping cache, flasing the ROM. also tried deleting the .nomedia files that i could find. so far the music players i have tried are
winamp,doubletwist and Apollo
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
I had this problem once upon a time. I use Poweramp and that played mp3's, only bad thing is you have a trial period then have to buy it. What ROM are you running? When I got to JB for some reason most music players couldn't read mp3's. I could use a file explorer and open it up, but it would tell me the file type is not compatible, or something like that.
Sent from my SGH-I997 using xda app-developers app
yeah.. pretty much the same story for me.. file explorer can open it up with winamp sometimes... havent tried poweramp yet... im currently on CM 10 (JB) with the 9/23 build.
okay so i did a factory reset, wipe cache, wipe davlik cache and reinstalled the latest CM 10 version (thanks for that scott ) but still the same problem... i cant seem to figure out how to fix this. :S
Again, if you haven't tried poweramp I would suggest trying the trial version to see if it solves your problem. I just opened up the Apollo music player and it didn't list half my songs. Some of these music players just are not compatible with .MP3 files.

Thanks for the TIP... I actually did try poweramp. since it is folder based it plays the songs without any issues. My problem is that all the other players (winamp, apollo, etc..) used to play all my songs till just a few days ago... that's why im trying to figure out where it went wrong. and just FYI i tried other folder based players and they all seem to play the songs.
I believe its something to do with the media scanning on android.
If you're on Jellybean and use Camera360, the C360 files in your DCIM folder don't play well with JB media scanner. Delete or move them to your computer. You can't change the file name and get rid of C360, you have to just put up with your photos being gone...

could be media scanner derpage, are you having lag or battery life issues?

mmhh... i dont have any noticeable lag. Actually since the latest cm10 release its been pretty darn smooth.. But im getting around 10 to 12 hours of battery with moderate use. on 2G only and wifi enabled. Im not so sure on how that is comparatively

battery life can be all over the place depending on the cell signal and the modem, but that's less than i get with 3g and hspa on, it's not necessarily less than others get. if you get a logcat and see media scanner throwing errors it can be the battery life issue (assuming there is one) and the missing files issues. you might have broken files or if you have a ton of files the scanner might just be locking up when the phone sleeps. if mediascaller is throwing errors on a logcat try a fresh flash and set the phone to stay awake while charging, put the phone on a charger and walk away till the media scanner finishes. (a half hour should be more than enough) but if you have broken files you might have to do some cleaning.

[Q] Deep sleep with music playing?

This might be incredibly stupid, but does anyone know if it's possible to have your phone deep sleep while playing music through headphones? Because it sticks at min freq and kinda eats up battery, regardless of governor or I/O

Sry to unearth that thread, but i had the same question and didn't found an answer here on xda - so i checked it myself.
And the answer is yes, it is possible, but to my knowledge there aren't many music players that support this.
If the sceen is off they buffer the blayback and let the CPU go to sleep and occasionally wake it up to rebuffer.
CPU is in deep sleep for 60..80+ % of the time.
Music players that let the cpu deep sleep (to my knowledge):
- clean music player
- es player (part of es file explorer)
Music players that idle at min frequency or higher and dont allow deep sleep:
google music player, playerpro, neutron, shuttle, nexmusic, n7player, poweramp
I've checked the deep sleep behavior of the above mentioned players with CPU Spy v0.40 on Stock Nexus 5.
The downside is that costum Kernels can cause the playback to stutter, just stop and/or other things.
I don't know exactly why but my quess is that happens because of a too low frequency in the time the cpu is awake - to raise that may help.
Or its maybe because of too agressive governors that force the cpu to early back to deep sleep.
It would be interesting to see if anyone else had made similar observations, found other music players that support deep sleep of the cpu.
greetings muckefug
Hi,
The solution is to stop the media player after a certain time. If you want to sleep with music we have a tool that allows you to set the duration for the player and a gradual reduction of volume at the end. So it will stop the player and let the phone to go to deep sleep mode

The goal is not to go to sleep while hearing music and stopping the music when you are asleep.
The goal is that the music is playing while the cpu of your phone can go to the "deep sleep"-state and in consequence to save battery while playing music.

I understand that but what i mean is that playing music needs cpu to run in normal mode, I don't think that it's possible with android coding and i think that you don't have to worry about that as your screen will go off after a certain time and as you know the screen is consuming more than 95%
That was also my thought ... But some player like the above mentioned display this behavior of letting the cpu go into deep sleep state on nexus 5 with android 4.4. The playback works fine for a while but then just stops and/or crashes utterly. Seems to be a bug with the new android but non the less the playback works for a while (up to 5 to 10 min)
The CPU is for 50 to 75 % of the time in deep sleep
Would be interesting to see an player who can make usage of that behavior/bug. There is always need for more battery life

That's right but I don't think that as app developers, we have that control. All what we can use is wake lock to wake up the device partially or fully when it's locked or to keep screen on, but for media player it's handled by the system so I think that this optimization is done by mobile constructors. You can use batterystats app to keep track of wake locks to detect big consumers and stop them (or remove them) to keep your battery charged for long

I'd like to bump this thread. I'm REALLY interested in such music player that would allow deep sleep during playbackplayback. We now have high memory devices, some with whooping 4gb of ram that could hold the entire library of most casual users. I really do hope there actually is a player that would simply load like 20 tracks that are in the Playlist to ram and then simply let it go with minimal cpu usage thus hopefully allowing for deep sleep. I did see a something interesting on my windows pc. Few years ago, when I started using foobar2000 I got a BSOD, irrelevant to the player, but I was listening to music and after a BSOD it actually kept playing for quite long even though the os was on halt completely. Thanks to the long 30s buffer I set in foobar2000.
I think this concept COULD actually work on our android devices. Please do correct me if I'm wrong. If there's already such player then please post a link. I'll be glad to try it. I'm a music addict so that would help me.
I did try clean music player, but I couldn't find a way to play all tracks from one directory including it's subdirectories. All I care about is shuffle all tracks from one directory including it's subdirectories and of course ability to use a equalizer.

I haven't heard about any. I've had an idea of loading tracks in playlists into a single long track, then loading them to ram and that might allow to play them without waking the device, but that requires a certain level of skill.
Worth bumping up in 2022?
Maybe?
(Also looking if this can be solved for Spotify on bluetooth headphones).
I don't know why this excellent feature didn't get widespread acceptance. Other than Nexus 5, I only know the Xiaomi Redmi 3s which supported this feature that too only in Android 6 (stock MIUI and LOS 13). In all the Android versions till A12 which I have used it didn't work.
P.S. Unrelated but Xiaomi Redmi Note 10 Pro and Poco F4 can enter Deep Sleep while serving as a hotspot, at least in MIUI, but not during audio playback
