[Q] Charging when abroad? - Eee Pad Transformer Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So was away over the weekend and had my TF-101 with me along with the charger.
Tried charging the TF-101 via a standard plug converter (TF-101 has a standard UK three pin, while I was in a country that had two pin). Tried all combinations (with keyboard attached, just the keyboard and just the tablet) but it wasn't showing as charging.
Now this could be a bit of a problem. Is this a known issue? Is there a way round it, short of getting a separate charger for when visiting foreign countries? Would it just drip charge if I had left it?
Also, do any of these battery juice / power packs that are around in the market work with the TF-101 or are we just limited to a wall charger?
Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Hmmm... That is a little strange, I am deployed in Afghanistan right now and I have charged my tab in all countries in between (various airports and tents powered by generators) from 110~220 and besides adapters, I have plugged in and charged just fine.
I am starting to have issues with the cable showing signs of wear and possible fraying, but the only thing that showed my TF101 not charging was one iffy ROM. Are you on stock or have you flashed another ROM?
Right now I am testing CM9 with Cornerstone and one thing I have noticed is that when docked, it constantly shows as if it is charging even when the battery is not full which I never noticed on stock or revolver ROMs.

My TF101 has been half way around the world and i've never had a problem charging it. Try rotating the plug. It has charged in Canada, Taiwan Hong kong, shenzen, and indonesia with no problems. the onlyissue i had was that the dock would vibrate when i plugged it in sometimes but that was fixed by rotating the plug to switch the polarity.
edit: the battery shows charging because it is drawing power from the dock. revolver is basically a suped up stock rom so it would show the proper indicators. CM9 is a custom build so it it built from CM9 source and adapted to the tf101.

[Q] Asus Eee Pad Transformer charging question

Hi,
I recently got my Transformer with keyboard dock a couple of days ago and am very pleased with how it's been performing up to now (updated to 3.1 soon after I got it ). I've got one question though (not sure if anyone has tested this): if you have the keyboard docked and you plug the charger into the dock, will both the dock and tablet charge in one sitting? Or does the power not get passed through somehow, meaning I have to charge each device separately?
Thanks.
Regards,
Jon.
Basically yes. The charger will charge whatever needs charging. I have the user created dual charging application that shows me exactly what's happening, and that's how it happens. It's the best case scenario. The ASUS engineer who designed that part of the system was wide awake when he / she was working on it.
Bye.

Thanks for that .
Just a heads up, you're not going to want to leave the tablet docked to the keyboard when not in use as it drains the battery very quickly.

When you say 'not in use' I'm guessing you mean when the tablet is switched on and left alone, right? Or does the same thing happen in this scenario even with the tab switched off? (Probably a dumb question lol )
problem with charging transformer
hi i have problem with this baby transformer ...
when i plugged charger with ac power to tablet charge indicator blink 2 time and then charge led in dock turning off
does it charge now or tablet or dock has problem ??
thanks in advance if anyone with experiences with this tablet aid me .
I think what you're describing is the "no power" light which pretty much says that the battery is completely dead, give it about 20 minutes and the light should (hopefully) come back on.

My charging saga
Here is my charging saga,
Received my TF yesterday (along with the keyboard dock), thought I would boot it up for a quick look. It did not have enough charge to that. Put it on the charger, wasn't sure it was charging then but as mentioned in above post it was getting something cause it came on for a brief moment. After 8 hours I powered on the TF, booted up no issue but I had only 38% charged, but it wasn't showing it was charging (unless I overlooked some kind of icon). Quickly installed dual battery app, it showed battery was not charging. So, I put it on the dock (did not want to I wanted to sell the dock, it was free with the purchase) anyway, the dock was drained also but at least it showed at that time it was charging both. Will see what next after work.

[Q] Dock charging problem

I bought my transformer five days ago. PAD IS B70 and dock is B60. Dock stays charged at 33% and don't get higher. When pad reached 5% i docked it, but nothing happened it just discharges after 20 minutes. So its like there isn'tbattery in it at all.
What shouldi do?
I would suggest plug the DOCK only in, using the wall charger supplied (NOT a PC) the lil light next to the plug will be orange while charging, then green when charged.
THEN, do the same with the TABLET only. (or vice versa)
Once they are both fully charged, you shouldnt have further problems, when they are docked together. Just make sure you use the charger that came with it. It charges at a higher volatage and amperage than a USB connection to say a PC can do...
Nothing
Thats the problem, dock indicator all the time is red it's charging for 10hours, but still 34%.
Dock doesn't chrge tablet and it doesn't charge from wall chrger, just like there isn't battery at all.
I think the problem is at docks software, so tablets factory reset is useless.
Hardware
Seems you have a hardware problem or firmware problem. Is the dock on the latest firmware? If it is, I think your dock is malfunctioning and you are obliged to get a repair.
Update
Yes it came from asus already with 3.1and checked the dock firmware, and everything is updated, waiting for 3.2 WW, if then anything doesn't change I will take it back.

[Q] Asus Transformer Dock not Charging [SOLVED]

Just got the dock a few days ago and it charged up fine the first day. Then a few minor glitches started.... the tablet wouldn't wake up from keyboard input or trackpad input. Now, the dock wont charge at all.
Dual battery widget shows it at 0%, and when I apply the charging cable, the LED shows green (when the tablet is at 100%). So it's almost as if it doesn't even see the dock battery.
Any ideas?
UPDATE: This issue has been SOLVED! See post #3 for my solution.
If you just got it, then it is in waranty. I would send it back for repair since they will replace it with a functioning one. My dock did this (although it was, like, a week after my newegg waranty expired) and I sent it into asus and they replaced it in a little under 5 days.
On a side note, have you tried removing the transformer, waiting about 10-15 seconds, and then replacing the transformer back on the dock (while the dock is not charging). Also, does the transformer show it is charging when you put it in the dock with under 90% charge? The dual battery widget sometimes says I have no charge on my dock when I clearly do. To fix it I just remove my transformer from the dock, wait a little, and put it back in aaaand: voila, it works perfectly.
Oh yea, and try disabling "power saving mode" in the settings under input if you want to wake up your tablet with the keyboard or trackpad.

Dyskmaster,
Thanks for the tips. I tried all of your suggestions, and nothing worked. The weird part was - every time I plugged in the dock, the light displayed solid green (indicating 100% charge on both batteries), but dual battery showed 0% charge on the dock. This got me thinking that the dual battery widget was not reporting correctly.
I then found a tip on another Android forum that suggested plugging in the dock to a USB port on a PC - waiting 5-10 minutes - and then trying the AC wall charger again. I did this, and boom.. the dual battery widget showed 100% on both batteries.
It's been working fine for about a week now, with no repeats... I have no idea what the problem was. My only guess is that the dual battery widget freaked out the first time the dock went to 0% charge. It seems it's reporting fine though now, even after the dock hits 0%.
I have this problem too, the led in dock always blinking in orange and dual battery always shows 0% ( of Dock) and i also changed the charger and changed the roms , but still not charging, what should i do?
Fixed for me too
I had RMA's my TF101 as it had completely died on my following ICS upgrade, Asus returned my tablet with ICS 4.0.3. For around 3 days I was using it very happily, no more reboots, no screens of death, I was so happy.
Then one morning after recharging my tablet while docked, I checked the dual battery monitor and it showed the dock battery rapidly fluctuating from 100% to 0%, it would show fully charged when plugged into the wall.
I was about to RMA the keyboard when I saw your post, plugged the keyboard into my laptop USB, left it probably 5 mins, then attacehed the tablet, dual battery widget showing both batteries correctly and no flucuating readings.
Thanks again

[Q] Tablet not charging when docked to keyboard

I've googled around and searched here and I haven't seen anyone else with this problem. Weird. So anyway, please help me!
Here's the situation: My TF101 no longer draws a charge from the keyboard dock unless the keyboard dock is plugged into the wall.
Details:
-Running stock unrooted 4.0.3 (latest firmware 9.1.17, US)
-The problem started after the latest firmware update, so that may be related, but it didn't start until several days after the update
-The TF101 still charges just fine when plugged into the wall, as does the keyboard dock itself
-The keyboard dock still works - ie, I can plug it into the tablet and type, use the trackpad and USB ports, etc.
-As stated, if the keyboard dock is plugged into the wall and the TF101 is docked, both the TF101 and the keyboard dock will charge
-When the TF101 is docked and the keyboard is not plugged into the wall, the battery settings say "discharging" and the TF101's battery drains as if it's not plugged into anything.
-Oddly, the keyboard's battery ALSO drains (according to the dual battery widget) in this situation, albeit very slowly, leading me to believe that the TF101 is getting a trickle from the keyboard, but not a full charge.
-The problem started a few days ago and has persisted since then, with no moments of workingness (except when the keyboard is plugged into the wall)
If you need any other information let me know. Thanks for any help you can provide.
My experience with dual battery widget is that it has a flaw in not showing correctly, if you do a cold boot(power button and volume down) it displays properly and the tablet and dock sync for some reason, I will try to pm the dev on this issue.

I am having the almost the same problem, except my dock wont charge at all.
I would like to add that my keyboard dock blinks orange when docked with the tablet and not plugged in. Also it blinks orange when wall charger is plugged in with or without the tablet docked.
I have tried leaving it plugged into the wall charger for 12+ hours with the keyboard docked and again with the dock not attached to the tablet. It never stops blinking orange. Never turns green like it used to. (The tablet will charge but the dock never charges. The dock is now at 0% according to the dual battery widget)
I have heard charging the dock by its self for 4hrs+ on usb3.0 will "wake the dock up" and let you finish charging from the wall charger.
So right now I am trying to charge it by USB 3.0 directly from my computers motherboard but it does not activate the charging light on the dock (docked or not), also the tablet does not charge from USB3.0 anymore like it used to.
Please someone help us solve this!
I love my transformer and use it daily and I am finding it hard to live without the extra battery life the dock gave the tablet.

Hello
I also had this problem. The tablet drained the docking station dry, and then neither device would charge from the adapter.
I solved the problem as follows:
1) Remove table from docking station.
2) Turn tablet off completely.
3) Plug tablet only into the charger, at this point the tablet turned on, and began charging.
4) Allow the tablet to charge completely!
5) Reconnect tablet to docking station, and plug docking station into charger.
Voila, all charged Hope it works for others who have this issue!

Almost same issue
Hello all, i am having a similar issue as the original poster. Only my TF101 will not charge while connected to the dock whether the dock is plugged in or not. The dock and tablet charge just fine seperatley and the dock will charge while they are connected.
I'm hoping someone can give me some guidence in regards as to what I should do or try.

Dock won't charge but still charges tablet and functions well.

I've seen many questions about the dock but can't find one that talks about this issue I just had this morning.
Last night both my tablet and dock were charged completely. This afternoon I start using my tablet and notice the tablet is at 30% and the dock is fully discharged at 0%. I plugged the keyboard in connected to the tablet to charge it. The tablet is charging just fine but the keyboard is flashing the orange light and is not charging. I have tried plugging just the keyboard in and it is still flashing orange and not charging. I thought it could be the power supply but the tablet itself is charging just fine.
Does anyone have any ideas I should try before trying to see if I can get a replacement?

When the dock is fully discharged the red led will flash for a while when your charging. It's normal, when you have charged for a while it will be constantly on!

Defective. Exchange dock or send to Asus for repair.
I don't know what happened but I left it plugged in all night yesterday and this morning it was half charged with the light on orange so I'm hoping that sometime when I was sleeping it fixed itself.

A whole night charged and half charged still doesnt seem right... If its all fully charged now.. it a matter of time when it will happen again..

I've had a dock die and just flash with no charging on the prime before guess it was defective. Picked up an open box from ebay for 90 bucks works like a charm.
I got the dock to charge, but had to monkey around to get it to fit just right....still not fun....
Got it solved by doing a cold boot.
Turned it off then held power + vol down combo untill I saw the text "cold-coot linux" apear, released the buttons and waited boot.
Now the charging light is blinking.on the dock.
Ok. Honest mistake. It wasn't charging. It blinks when active (connected to tablet and tablet unlocked...if you lock the tablet the dock led stops blinking).
Tried the cold boot thing described above. Didn't work.
The charger charges the tablet alright, but not the dock.
Opened it up yo see if there was something wrong (cable disconnected or so). Unplugged and plugged everything back. Still won't charge. =/
Any ideas????
Thanks in advance!
Got it to charge using a pliers. Images attached.
Apparently or my dock jack is bad or my cable connector...most probably the dock. =/
Any ideas on what to do now? Where can I get this jack? Is it not extremely hard to replace? Worth it?
I'm in Brazil, so I got no official ASUS support for this piece. =(

I have the same issue, and after reading your post, I tried your hack and the charging light finally came on for my dock. Evidence strongly suggests its a flaky electrical connection in either the cord or the jack. I am leaning towards jack because my cord will charge my tablet when directly plugged in, but I am not yet convinced.
Noticing that the connector's pins are on the outside, and it connects to a double-sided blade of pins, I tried to squeeze the connector some to make a better electrical connection. It was a little better, in that I could occasionally now get the charging light to turn on for a few seconds by applying pressure to just the cord's connector, but still not reliable. I then tried to use a small blade between the plastic and outer metal casing of the cord's connector, and I destroyed the came and now it won't even charge my tablet. I'll have to go to the store tomorrow to replace the cable, and we'll see if a new cord works to power the dock.
There's a distinct possibility that a new cable might just be all the fix I need.
Looking at the teardown on ifixit, it seems like the tablet uses a slightly different connector housing than the dock. Perhaps the dock has a less reliable part.

A new cable did not fix it.
Without another good path forward, I get brave and have attempted to reshape the receiver jack's metal housing to be more snug, hoping that a squeeze would do it. I have only managed to mangle it further.
