[Q] Newbie to Xoom tablet

Hey guys , i took the plunge and bought a WIFI only Xoom a little under a week ago and so far i really like it . though i did question the purchase after seeing the lack of apps in the market that scale to the xoom's 10 inch screen .
I have been reading around the forum and trying to decide if i want to unlock and root my xoom .
I love flashing kernels and such to my HTC Desire but I was wanting some input as to whats really out there for the xoom and is it worth doing .
I think the xoom is rather speedy as it is stock , so is the tiamat kernel really worth doing ?
also , reading around the net i see that the Google Movies addon (when it comes to wifi only xooms) will not work with rooted devices .
this is a big negative to me and the family as we justified the purchase of the xoom on a lot of features including the movies in the android market .
so , please chime in if you dont mind and let me know what you think about the above .

At the moment the main kernel available is Tiamat's, or some other variations on more or less his work. These are great kernels, but are mainly useful for overclocking. If you do not intend to do a lot of intensive gaming and are happy with your current speed on the Xoom, then overclocking really isn't a big need for you.
Considering your situation, if I were you I would leave my Xoom as it is, unrooted for now. That way you can get the Google Movies when they arrive as you stated that was a very important feature for you. If after a while you decide you are not getting as much value out of that feature as you expected, or if Google changes its policy, there will always be time to root your device later. Also by that time there may be more kernel options or Ice Cream Sandwich hacks to flash.
You are not closing any doors by not rooting/flashing right out of the box. I just can't see any compelling reason for you to root at this point....and a couple good reasons why you shouldn't for now. The Xoom is a great device and has more then enough to hold your attention without flashing.

I haven't rooted my Xoom, nor have I rented out any flix. The tiamat kernel (from my understanding) enables SD card and allows you to overclock.
I don't ever 'rent' any content, and I'm willing to wait for an update that will enable the SD card. You can watch your own movies just fine on the Xoom, and watch TV shows from the network television sites.
Android Market tablet apps are still too few, but that should change quickly this summer as many more Honeycomb tablets are released (of course, we thought that would have happened already with the release of the Acer and Asus tablets).

Once I rooted and flashed the Tiamat kernel I have had no problems at all with the external SD card.

As long as you are willing to take responsibility for your actions if your brick or otherwise roast your device I dont' care what you do with it. If I may rant for 5 seconds I'm becomming increasingly irritated with people who are coming in here... breaking their Xoom's and then crying for advice and the advice being given is "take it back to the store and swap it out". No, that's called theft.
I think rooting is probably 100x safer than overclocking though which is where most of these people seem to get in trouble.
Other than that, welcome to the Xoom and I hope you enjoy it. I really love mine and could probably go on for half an hour about what I use it for.
Here is a quick and dirty list of apps that I find myself using daily:
- Pulse
- Paradise Island (lol)
- PocketCloud (paid ver)
Entertainment I find myself dabbling with almost daily:
- Pinball HD
- Riptide GP (both paid, very fun)
- Splashtop (for remote WoW, lol... also paid)
Other stuff I use daily but isnt downloaded apps include the browser obviously, I also use Firefox to access intranet sites (like sbs2003/sbs2008). I use the heck out the mail client. I also switch back and forth between the facebook app and using the page in the browser.
There are probably more tablet oriented apps than you think by now, as I find that new ones are coming out every day and some of them are really good.
If there's anything particular you think you'd like to know about just ask

No it doesnt. The possibility of data corruption exists. ASUS and Acer have implimented Kernel hacks to enable SD support. My personal vote is to wait for Google to properly impliment SD support and be satisfied with the more than ample 32GB of on board storage.

About the availability of apps with coinciding tablet release.... some developers just aren't in a position to go out and buy tablets I guess which is why I'm very happy to see Google give 5000 units away at their I/O even if someone of them went to dip**** bloggers.

What about that tiny little charging plug was looking at that and looks to be easily broken. Has anyone had a problem with it?

32gb Xoom Showing 4GB Total Space

Dear Fellow Xoom Users,
I have a 32 GB, 3.1 From Factory, 3G Xoom. It is a MZ601 which was bought on a trip to Hong Kong.
It all worked fine untill I succumbed to the bug most of us have and decided to start modding, hacking and tinkering with my Xoom. There is something about the rush of possibly destroying an almost 800 Dollar tablet that cant be matched
I flased the Tiamat 2.0.1 rom and The Xoom Zone one. It all looked good and worked flawlessly. I tried messing with the stock one and creating a custom rom and kernel of my own. I am slowly getting there,I would get to a point where I messed it up, I would use fastboot to get myself back to stock ( 3.0.1 ) with files sourced from;

I used the international ROM software, as I didnt know which version of the MZ601 I had coming from Hong Kong. The files posted on motorola funny enough take me to 3.0.1 rather than the stock 3.1 I had out of the box, but a few minutes later, 3.1 comes OTA.
I was checking the 'About Tablet' and noticed something weird with my tablet, it is showing 4GB total space, a little odd for a 32GB tablet no?? (See Pic)

What do you guys think...am I just high again and seeing the wrong thing or do you know what the problem is?? When I first got the tablet I loaded about 20GB worth of books, music and videos on it....so i DO REMEMBER it having 32GB!!!

Well you are not wrong there, something is DEFINATELY wrong!! I have probably written something to its memory causing it to now show only 4GB but I was just wondering if anyone would know what.how why etc saving me the time from exploring the issue in hours of Ubuntu terminal command line!!

Maybe old clockwork recovery file and it backed up the whole system image? Make sure u have the latest recovery installed

Yes I do have the latest CWM Recovery from THIS THREAD so I assume that it is the optimal one to use.
Also, something to note, the above image is from STOCK. To get back to stock, instructions were followed from, developer.motorola.com/xoomsoftware.
4GB is Hilarous, and not matter what I flash, full stock, xoom zone, Tiamat....they all show the EXACT same about screen indicating I have 4GB....

You said that you bought this on a trip to Hong Kong. Did you buy it IN Hong Kong or in a store that you can return the device to?
I noticed that you said in your post that you bought if from the factory... But Where?
Reasons I ask --
If bought in Hong Kong, you might have gotten a knock off version of the Xoom.
If bought down the street at a store you can go back to, I would say reflash it with Stock and take it back and demand a refund, repair, or replace (the three R's heh...)
You could have also flashed the device with a bad sector that is suppose to display the size of the internal memory... Keep us up to date on this and I hope all goes well for you... just remember the 3 R's... helped me in many situations...

Bought it IN Hong Kong, from a rather reputable store. If it is a knock off, it is a really good one!! It had everything it should, right down to the stickers. Not a single bit of engrish either. It truly has me baffled, I think it was a poor write which in turn messed up a memory sector as I CLEARLY remember putting on 20 gigs of data before I started messing with custom roms. I shall persevere a tad more and see what I can find.

Hey Guys - This may sound kinda funny but I have the exact same problem. When i got the tab, it showed the whole 32GB, but after tinkering with it, and after using Tiamat's rom (no blame game here), it shows exactly 4.11GB and the startup screen is gone from a breathing "M" logo to a custom hexagon flash...
HELP!.. Is ther anyway, I can re-partition the internal storage thru fastboot?

I wonder if you are going to need to completely re-flash everything to stock, meaning that you would need to wipe everything off the internal SDD. Or maybe the rom was slightly corrupted though download? I would suggest looking into maybe going and seeing how to wipe the full SDD and reformat, partition, and start with a clean Stock Rom? That is the only way that I can see this getting fixed unfortunately... you might have had a weird switch where the OS is on the 28gbs that is free and the 4gbs that are for the OS to be stored as is the internal... (is this even possible?! I have had some weird stuff happen with computers where i have made a 1tb look like a 2 gig hdd... but I'm just saying... it is a possibility and maybe a point in the right direction?)
I would also like to note to Aeren, I was not meaning to say that you did buy a knockoff, I just now there are some out there of many of the tablets... so it was a thought process and I was just playing devils advocate on what could be the troubles... and wanted to make sure it wasn't

Right.. and how would one go about doing that? - i.e., wiping the SDD (truly).. I mean its not like we can plug it into windows and startup partition magic. There has to be a way to actually wipe the entire internal storage and bring it back to factory.

I, obviously, am curious as to whether I can reformat/partition the internal SSD of my Xoom. I have looked for it in Disk Manager and GParted on Ubuntu to no luck,I am guessing it is hidden for a reason.
I was wondering if anyone had any sort of advice, short of returning it , as to how I may access the 'drive' inside of the xoom so I could partition/format it/look at it/investigate/LOSE MY MIND!!
I guess we could just get a rather large microSD to compensate. :S

I will look into this when i get back to my computer... but I am not quite sure... you might be able to do something by looking up how people have formatted their iphones and put android on them, or partitioned the ssd to be allowed to place a dual boot and multiboot os on the system. there have also been people that have placed ubuntu on the rooted systems to run in the back ground allowing people to do a 12.0.0.1 vnc into the os. Looking at all these and seeing how they were able to create these is worth a shot. Another way that could be able to help it move along, is maybe get a terminal emulator and run commands through it and see if there is a way to activate certain command lines... but a novice (not saying you are, just warning is all) should not try this because you can easily brick your tablet...
Also speaking of which... maybe looking at how bricking tablets are fixed might help too? I am sorry taht I can't help any more then suggest at this current moment, I am not at home with my computer to be able to look at links quickly... hurraay mobile browsers haha....

I've exactly the same problem!.
Bought an MZ601 last monday in HK at a big chain with different stores. As the build installed has no spanish language neither spanish keyboard input, I downloaded and fastbooted the EU version from Motorola developers zone.
There is a glitch when flashing userdata.img. The tablet says image file si bigger that partition, so it cannot load it.
Finally, everything seems to be ok, except the memory (in my case is 4,11 Gb!).
I spent lot of time doing different tests and trying with diferent versions. Allways the same result.
My guess is that those two things shall be related (did you experienced also trouble when flashing userdata.img?). As the tablet I bought was brand installed allready in 3.1 and I'm flashing 3.0, maybe partitions have been already shrinked and the old file does not fit.
Anyway, I will keep in contact and hope to find a fix.

Sounds pretty much EXACTLY what happened to me. Also same thing happened to another user in this thread after flashing Tiamat. I am also not playing a blame game, but I would like to suggest that there is possibly something unique with our HK xooms?? Mine was sourced direct from a genuine Motorola source, so I know its not a case of fakes but maybe the Chinese/hk xoom is different in some way....damn communism. Could there maybe be differences in algorithms, encryption etc due to their restrictiveness in china??
I am using SSH and investigating other methods of getting into the 'drive' so will keep updated,.

I don't think this problem deals with encryption or so.
As far as I remember, the stock HK version (build H.6.1-17-CN-40) had more features that the actual 3.1 OTA updated. Specially I connected an USB pen and it directly readed it!.
So, what I think is that Moto just released a more avanced version in HK. As it is factory loaded directly in 3.1, probably the size of mtdblock5 has been adjusted to fit with this new release and that's the reason because it cannot load userdata from the downloadable 3.0's from the moto site. I'm not slilled in android but surely this userdata has information used by the system to map memory or to handle storage.
So, I will continue to look for an image that fits, or looking the way to adjust the partition sizes.
Hope a lote we can find a fix for this. I hope this exactli 28 Gb!

I think you could be right!! It also seems out HK/CN xooms are the only ones without an image on the dev motor site, :-( I am trying to find stock images for our xooms to se if that was the issue....seems as though we had the same thought.

Right ladies, its is true I got mine from the Motowprd in HK now i'm in Kuwait and been mucking about with the xoom. Anyway, turns out you "can" mount the darn thing in buntu and win7 but whats the point?, it still shows 4.11 GB.
So unless we get a tool command line or not, to partition the drive and format it in the right filesystem, we are - how do i put it?....****ED!

I met the same problem. There's something wrong with HK-version MZ601. After rooted , internal memory became 4.2G instead of 28G.

Nextbook Premium 9

Has anyone heard of the Nextbook Premium 9? I am trying to root it, but have been unsuccessful with all of the current rooting tools (z4root, Androot etc) and have been searching the internet for anyone who has found a successful method for rooting.

Is there any hope for rooting the Nextbook Premium 9?
I have a new Nextbook Premium 9, and it has been limited very tightly by Efun, and I cannot find where anyone that has posted on the Internet has managed to root it. The problem is the tight memory limitations (kills me having that much free space on the device and no access to it).
I have done all that I know to do: add a 32gb micro-sdcard, and used ADB to install some stubborn apks, and set the preferred target of installations and data to the sdcard. I moved everything over that can be moved (it has Android 2.3.1). I cannot fit the apps that I really need all at the same time. I can uninstall and reinstall from the backups on the card... a pain, and it limits its usefulness.
Not having Market is a pain, but I can live with that with help from Amazon and others. But it doesn't do me a lot of good as tightly locked down as it is. I have an Onda VX610W coming (if DHL ever decides to move it out of Hong Kong to me) with ICS already installed, but its too small for what I am using the NextbookP9 to do. I need the Nextbook for my presentations. It has the larger screen, and I just need it.
Please, is there anyone who can help me or who can point me in the right direction. I need help with this one. Thanks in advance.

Simular situation. A friend tried to root his with the 8p's root. While it worked the touchscreen doesnt work.
So how do I go about figuring out what driver I should compile and throw in the image?

The Nextbook Premium series are rebranded Kohotech Tablets, and I think I am about to dive into the nightmare of trying to get technical support from a Chinese company. Efun is 'less than' helpful, and the response I got to the request for help left me gritting my teeth. They are selling the new 10 inch Kohotech that carries Android 4 ICS. This is done before they fulfill their promise to upgrade the other Premiums to ICS. That would help, but not solve the memory problems.
I bought the Onda VX610W I mentioned, and even though the Nextbook has a superior resolution than the Onda and a camera, the Onda flies circles around it in performance. It came pre-rooted from the company I bought it from.
The Onda has ICS and the Nextbook Gingerbread, and the processor of the Onda is an Allwinner A10 (faster than I expected). The Onda came with 8gb internal memory (I have a 32gb micro-sdcard due here tomorrow), and the Nextbook came with 4gb and has an external 32gb sdcard. But the majority of the Nextbook's internal memory is untouched, with no way to move anything over to ROM without rooting. When you see the performance side by side, the difference kind of hurts when you consider what is in the Nextbook.
I think though, most of the operational difference has to do with the fact that the Nextbook is so walled up that it is difficult to access its memory and other parts of its hardware (having difficulties using its magnetometer). It just doesn't have enough memory to function well, and most of it just sits there idle.
I have a 32gb micro-sdcard in it, and have used the Android Debugger to have it default to moving a lot of the apps to the sdcard instead of internal memory when installed. It helps, but it is continually slowing or locking on operations that should not bottleneck it (doesn't matter if they are in internal memory or the external sdcard). I have to push the reset at least twice per day. What I am doing on it should give it no great grief, but it does. The Onda makes the problems with the Nextbook all the more obvious. The problem is that the screen on the Onda is going to finish making me blind I think. I need the Nextbook. I don't really want to have to consider this a wasted tablet.
I understand from other discussions that the Premium 9 is very brick-resistant. Its a good thing, because I am ready to experiment. If I just want to watch a movie, its okay... but if I try to really use it, it works about 1/4 of the time. It has good hardware, but it is just so walled up. Nooks are apparently easier to root than these.
If anyone can help, I would really, really appreciate it.

Efun is 'less than' helpful, and the response I got to the request for help left me gritting my teeth. They are selling the new 10 inch Kohotech that carries Android 4 ICS. This is done before they fulfill their promise to upgrade the other Premiums to ICS. That would help, but not solve the memory problems.
I bought the Onda VX610W I mentioned, and even though the Nextbook has a superior resolution than the Onda and a camera, the Onda flies circles around it in performance. It came pre-rooted from the company I bought it from.
The Onda has ICS and the Nextbook Gingerbread, and the processor of the Onda is an Allwinner A10 (faster than I expected). The Onda came with 8gb internal memory (I have a 32gb micro-sdcard due here tomorrow), and the Nextbook came with 4gb and has an external 32gb sdcard. But the majority of the Nextbook's internal memory is untouched, with no way to move anything over to ROM without rooting. When you see the performance side by side, the difference kind of hurts when you consider what is in the Nextbook.
I think though, most of the operational difference has to do with the fact that the Nextbook is so walled up that it is difficult to access its memory and other parts of its hardware (having difficulties using its magnetometer). It just doesn't have enough memory to function well, and most of it just sits there idle.
I have a 32gb micro-sdcard in it, and have used the Android Debugger to have it default to moving a lot of the apps to the sdcard instead of internal memory when installed. It helps, but it is continually slowing or locking on operations that should not bottleneck it (doesn't matter if they are in internal memory or the external sdcard). I have to push the reset at least twice per day. What I am doing on it should give it no great grief, but it does. The Onda makes the problems with the Nextbook all the more obvious. The problem is that the screen on the Onda is going to finish making me blind I think. I need the Nextbook. I don't really want to have to consider this a wasted tablet.
I understand from other discussions that the Premium 9 is very brick-resistant. Its a good thing, because I am ready to experiment. If I just want to watch a movie, its okay... but if I try to really use it, it works about 1/4 of the time. It has good hardware, but it is just so walled up. Nooks are apparently easier to root than these.
If anyone can help, I would really, really appreciate it.

I have a rooted android running on the 9P ... just need touchscreen drivers for it

When you get it running... touchscreen and all, then please contact me again. I need the help. I have run into a glitch on the Onda and it is consuming my time right now... trying to avoid reflashing it, but it seems the best option. I can't keep my little hands off of things when they are working just fine it seems... always trying to find out what can work better. Its a life-long trend, and at this point it seems kind of useless to try and stop.
Anyway, whenever I find out why I have wifi connectivity and no network interface on the Onda, I am going to switch my focus back to the Nextbook. It is actually running better than it has run before because I unloaded a lot of nice apps to give it more breathing room. But it kind of sacrificed the purpose to which I got it. There is no balanced compromise with that one... I have to root it when it is possible, to free up memory and maybe to upgrade past Gingerbread. They are offering the new 10 inch tablet with ICS installed right now. I checked with Kohotech, and there is almost no difference in the Nextbook 9 and 10... even more alike than the 8 and 9, but ICS changes it a lot.
I have a device running 2.1, 2.3 and 4.0, and let me tell you... despite the obvious similarities of them all being Android, the 4.0 does some neat things the others just can't, and it is smoother.
Got to start with rooting the thing, though.
If you get the screen working, then I would like to hear more about it... thanks.
UPDATE: For some reason, the permissions on this page suddenly would not let me post a reply, which I really need to do. Finless on Freaktab.com has produced a working custom rooted rom for the NEXTBOOK PREMIUM 9. He also included the original stock rom in case of emergencies. I have not tried it, but according to others, it works. I just finished downloading the files and will try it tomorrow after a nap.
I request permission to post a new reply in this thread. If you will let me, I will post a link to the thread found on Freaktabs that has the solution. I will first try out the ROM myself though. I was about to sell this thing to a friend in frustration.
It has such a beautiful display, I think I'll keep it with the 1gb USER APP space and access to Google Play that he gave it. He said he could do more, but 1 gb will make the thing workable... especially since he got rid of the bloatware bogging it down. But there is hope for the Premium9 users now. I sent tech support at Nextbook an inquiry about upgrades to ICS as there was some real indication of an upgrade. They said no plans were in the works for upgrading the very bogged down unrooted Gingerbread ROM it comes with. GET THIS: they suggested that I buy one of their "new" series of tablets (like... 5 months after the Premiums hit the market) instead. Hey, just forget the $200 or so dollar investment and buy a newer one with ICS from us... also unrooted. No thank you. I have an Archos on the way and own an Onda. I don't think I want another unrooted bogged down tablet from Nextbook after just getting this one. Except for having 4gb instead of 8gb memory, the hardware in the thing is pretty sound. But it was the locked down rom that made it a misery to use. If it works out, I will post the results.

Certinally. Because this was passed to me I was responsible for returning a working device TODAY so I ended up buying a brand new one >.>

Any news regarding this Nextbook Premium 9 root + market? I will receive one this week but... it seems that I will regret having it...
It would be awsome if some dev put his hands on one...

I have managed to get a rom dump of the Nextbook Next9 NXM908HC
The romdump (done through adb) reported successful dump all exept config.gz where I wound up with 0 bytes. I read over there that the custom rom for the Next8p runs on the 9p but drivers are wrong for the digitizer on the 9p.

For those looking for rooted nextbook9
Head on over to freaktab.com. A fella that goes by Finless (administrator) AKA Bob has done us all a great service by putting together a rooted, debloated nextbook9 ROM.
I have tested it on my nextbook9 and found that it works.
BTW: When he says debloated he means it. This is positively the most stripped down ROM I have ever seen and I've been flashing custom builds since the windows mobile6 days.

Inside the custom rom found on that page at freaktab.com look for app injector. This takes care of the too stripped down to be usefull. With that you can add the market (Play Store) gapps and the other apps that come with the stock rom.

I tried the ROM from Freaktab and it worked great. My 9P is rooted, I have the full android market. The ROM utilizes more memory, boots faster, and seems to run apps faster. What more can you ask for?!

the freaktab rom is ginger not ics is there a root/debloat rom for ics ?

I have the Nextbook P10SE. I just flashed a few different ROMS for it, including a JB rom. only problem is, inverted screen and touch.
which of course renders it useless. Finless rom has the touch correct, but the image is rotated 180 degrees.
the JB rom found here on XDA (look for Rockchip ROM) has the screen oriented correctly but the touch is rotated 180 degrees
sigh.

try kingo root, that software does root almost every device that i know of. i have been there with a device that is unknown or limited and you cant find any thing at all, thats why i start to build my own stuff. Try kingo root that would be first step and then cwm .

Recently I bought a PiPO M9 3G from Focal Price website. It arrived safely and Android 4.2.2 installed. But the tablet wasn't rooted. I look for info to root the tablet and install a custom ROM. After a lot of search found the way to root my PiPO M9 3G. I'm not a dev, just a user. I've been with XDA from 2009 as a user with my G1. Even I looked for info about any custom ROM for the tablet in XDA but no luck. There are few threads about CWM.

I'm really sorry to hear that. I'm not a developer, just a user, I wish if I could give you any nice solution for this. It happened to me as well. I pressed the reset button while pressing the Esc key and the tablet restarted and worked.

I have ordered the PiPo M9 Pro (1900x1200 and 32GB nand), and will let you know when I receive it (within 2 weeks) and how I get it rooted (or not )

The seller on ebay claimed it could be rooted.. he tried over this weekend, Yesterday I get message from him saying "it's not stable, so going to send you english firmware one but un-rooted"

Finally got my M9 Pro!
Was a problem at the shop but got it fast right after.
Nice thing already: you can open multiple apps at the same time (multi-window) and have them next to each other.
I will go try to root it now, will reply after if it worked or not...
One disadvantage I notice sometimes: with 3D apps, the menu/screen of the background peeks thru sometimes (guess this will be fixed in a patch).
Also HDMI output is cool; 1080 50/60hz or 720 50/60hz output.
And it supports external controller (doesn't work on a lot devices because it asks for more power)

In my pipo m9pro 3g is no Greek language. It has a lot of language but no greek

Root your stock Pipo M9 Pro
So I finally got my Pipo M9 Pro yesterday, I love the Metro style launcher (Pipo Family Launcher) that comes with it.
I decided to try Riley's Custom ROM v1.6, so I got all the benefits you get from it, but I also lost the launcher I liked so much.
So to make a long story short, I downloaded the latest official firmware, from pipo's web site (20130822).
Flashed it, and everything was back as before.
Now I just needed to get root.
I used UNLOCKROOT tool for windows, the only problem with this tool is that you need to have installed the proper drivers for the Pipo, so the PC will be able to detect it, to properly inyect the SuperSU apk. But since the drivers where installed when I flashed the custom ROM this wasn't the case.
So now I have my Pipo M9 Pro with the la test stock firmware, Pipo launcher and... rooted!
I'm happy and will keep these settings until something better comes for our tablet.

For the people waiting for my experiences;
Got easily flashed Rileys rom onto the tablet.
Because I didn't have the correct drivers for Windows, I couldn't root the stock.
Rileys rom is really easy in use and cleaned nice up.
There still are the wifi issues from the newest roms from PiPo, but not that problematic.
Rileys rom for the M9 Pro is currently at 1.3

I am now using Rileys rom 1.6, the wifi seems to be worked on at PiPo.
Testing the Family Launcher now (in Rileys Rom 1.6beta), works kinda nice and easy if you want to entertain a kid and you can switch to normal launcher again with Rileys rom.
In my earlier version I started to have random freezes, It seems that's solved in this version.
(if your tablet freezes and you pressed the reset, after booting up it's recommended to do a reboot, or it starts freezing again)
With the RKMultiPlayer you can play a movie in a small screen and keep working in other apps.
MultiWindow is really nice with 2 apps together, but you can use 4 with a second push on the MW button.
Tablet is very well build; dropped it from the table, only had to click a corner of the screen back, no scratch or crack!
With the FlashTool you can flash your own Start Up Flashscreen (still image) and with root you can change your Bootanimation.

I just ordered the Wifi version of the Pipo M9 Pro. I am curious, as I cannot seem to get an answer anywhere on the internet and perhaps someone here knows. Is the 3G version supported in the USA spectrum or no? If it is, how does one go about activating it?
Also, is it possible to get a full section for this tablet on this website or is that not allowed? It seems like all kinds of things are scattered all over the internet and the info is iffy. However, this website tends to keep things simple and has a good crowd that keeps things organized.

[Q] Upgrade/Downgrade/headaches.

This is my first post here so please be gentle. I have a Note pro 12.2 (p900/WiFi) tablet that I purchased last year after 2 months of reading/doing research/and hands on between it and the Surface3 pro. Biggest problem was I had to go to Florida to actually get my hands on a Pro because no one in the tri state area (MD/PA/NJ) had it in stock or even as a display. And when I bought it i HAD to order it.
Past all that, the Note has been invaluable to me, 64GB plus 128GB card. I use it every day, 8-12 hours minimum. I have not rooted it because I am worried about support. I also have a Note 3 running 4.4.2 - I turned off the auto updates and have refused to allow the upgrade to Lollipop on that device because of all the problems I have been reading about. That device works perfectly. My wife's first S4 did and auto update which completely messed up that phone. So I have experience trying to get those children at the Sprint store to try to help. _anyway, I digress. Today, I checked, an update is available for the Note Pro (+1GB file to download by the looks of it) I would not mind trying it but first I want to do a complete backup snapshot of my device. Just like I do on my pc's and laptops. For example, I use Clonezilla and can image the whole thing, perfectly, and restore it COMPLETELY - at will. I have not found ANY tool that allows me to do that to ANY android device. It is like I am being help hostage. I hate it.
1. I want to be able to get a complete (Clonezilla style image) of my NOTE PRO and I want to be able to restore that should the Lollipop experience be Lollypoop.
2. I want to be able to capture that snapshot of the device with all its settings intact - including the Knox
Can this be done? What tool is there that allows a real complete snapshot of an android device and allows you to restore a previous or older version, SHOULD I CHOOSE TO (from 5.02 to 4.4.2 - something the Sprint children told me is not possible with android)
Any useful help and pointing into a direction that can do this would be greatly appreciated. I know that I am not alone in this frustration with Google forcibly controlling EVERYTHING ( I was livid last year when my Notes upgraded to 4.4.2 and I lost the ability to write to the external card on nearly every app that I had paid for, even sent multiple e-mails to Samsung, to no avail)

I've been an XDA member for nearly 7 years, but I don't usually ask much in the way of questions. I hardly post at all, actually. I can usually find my answers by searching and reading the forums. This is my first Samsung device (I've always had either Nexus or HTC phones. & Nexus tablets) and I find working with it to be kind of frustrating. I've kept it stock at 4.4 because it works 95% of the time. The only problem I have is with wifi at times.
I'd like to put an alternate ROM on it and find a way to keep most of the S-pen functionality, but so far the array of "X works, but Y" doesn't info associated with various roms I've read about is daunting.

Can you imagine, making an upgrade and blowing out a major manufacturer like Logitec? Not some hokum chinese knockoff, but a name brand. This is exactly what is wrong with android. It seems inexperienced and oblivious children are driving it. That is one of the major reasons android was lacking serious professional support and respect all these years. Making boneheaded decisions that destroy existing functionality, for what? A new color scheme? A flat screen lay out? Really, thats what we need?
And when they PUSH the upgrades, its like you are trapped. A cloned backup and the ability to restore to a previous good setup is absolutely essential. I have looked at all these mods of the kernel and tweaks, etc. The fact is that NONE of them have 100% functionality. You always lose something, sometimes a lot. And the gains do not seem to be worth destroying the stock setup. ESPECIALLY WHEN YOU CAN NOT UNDO IT.
The loss of direct access to external sd cards for example, because google is pushing phones with no external sd slots. Really? I avoided apple products EXACTLY because there was no expansion slot. Then google goes and kills it.
Here is a suggestion. NOT ALL DEVICES ARE PHONES. Tablets have been around for years. Enough already with phone upgrades for tablets. Tablets should have their own firmware and operating system.
Here is a novel idea. You want loyal customers? Give them what they are clamoring for. Give them the ability to save their systems. Then upgrade fo your hearts content. BUT IF IT IS A CRAP UPGRADE. Allow them to undo it. Think about how much less bad feedback and emergency support you can avoid. Thats real dollars being save.
And by the way, as unresponsive as Samsung has been, they see the writing on the wall. Android on Samsung devices is heading the way of the dodo. Some skinned version of a tablet/phone linux replacement is coming. It will be one of the first major rejections of google power grab by a major player in the market.
So give us the ability to backup our systems. WITHOUT HAVING TO ROOT, when even that does not guarantee 100% sucess

Judging by the slew of problems, an ever increasing list, Lollipoop is so not a worthwhile upgrade. This is exactly why we need to be able to snapshot/backup the complete system BEFORE ANY UPDATES.
After two days of waiting, it is disappointing to me that no answer has been posted. I thought if any place had it it would be here. I might be wrong.

As you've guessed, you're basically looking for an answer that doesn't exist, at least not the specific one you want. The one you don't? . . . Root and install custom recovery? . . that's the only answer at this point . . and yes it trips Knox . . it is what it is . . Trust me, you're not the first or only person to lament about the situation. I've been up on my own soap box many times too.

I had a premonition, considering how no one touched my question. You can get a lot of answers by just by asking the right question, even when they don't answer.
As long as Android remains attached to this childish, closed sandbox and its restrictions, then its days are numbered. From the standpoint of a business owner, if I was a major company with product in the pipeline that needs something to run as the basic operating system, I WOULD BE LOOKING SOMEPLACE ELSE.
Google is not the end-all be-all of software. There were other operating systems before them and there will be operating systems after they move into the dustbin of history. I hope they are paying attention here. I personally have been in the field since the mid-70's, I see a strong pattern here.
Anyway, thank you for flipping on the light bulb. I will contain my rage and re-direct it to something more productive (like those dweebs at Papyrus - jesus)

regarding Knox... no you cannot restore that under any circumstances.
snapshot of everything else... yes and no. you cannot snapshot (aka nandroid aka twrp backup) your bootloader or STOCK recovery.
bootloader: you can only change this via Odin or OTA updates, and depending on the specific update cannot downgrade these below a certain point of the currently installed (if at all)
recovery:
you can freely flash new versions without a pc, but you cannot backup the stock recovery in a nandroid because the nandroid is generated using twrp -- a custom recovery that takes the place of stock recovery (mostly useless). if you find a copy of the stock recovery on the forum, you could then flash it back using Flashify from Google Play, but you'd then lose the ability to restore your nandroid until TWRP is restored.
also, you cannot take OTA updates while TWRP is installed, and in some cases at all / ever again after installing TWRP or root.

I can confirm that OF4 (the initial lollipop update) can be downgraded to NK1 (the newest kitkat update). if anyone can confirm for me whether or not OI1 can be downgraded to kitkat NK1 I would greatly appreciate it!

Depending on what version of Note Pro you have, LTE versions have locked bootloader, so they cannot downgrade.
Wifi Note Pro doesn't have locked bootloader, but downgrade from Lollipop to Kitkat you need bootloader for Kitkat along with the firmware NK1. If you read the threat LogicTech keyboard not working after update to Lollipop, you will see the link to Kitkat bootloader.
Without this bootloader, your tablet will hang at boot up after you flash the Kitkat firmware.

I downgrade it to NK1, this process only takes 5 minutes
I did it only for demonstration but personally I think Lollipop has a better graphic interface, then I go back to Lollipop .
I can go back and forth from Kitkat to Lollipop with ease as long as right bootloader is loaded.
Since I loaded the OH2, the tablet is updating now to OI1 and it's wifi version SM-P900 Note.

That's not entirely true.
The USA LTE versions have a locked bootloader.
The International P905, however, does not. (Device-locking of any kind is illegal under EU law.)
Now, whether you can downgrade the P905 I really can't say, because mine has been comfortably sitting on 4.4.2, and I have no desire to let Lollipop anywhere near it. :laugh: Just thought I'd clarify that the US and EU devices are not the same

If you can post your tablet with back cover removed, I can tell if it's different from US device. I once opened a tablet sold in England, I did not see any differences from US device except the hardware code indicates it's not from US. I swap a mainboard from SM-P907A, an LTE tablet from AT&T to SM-P905V, an LTE tablet from Verizon, it runs normally except the software customized for AT&T. I don't change anything from the Verizon tablet, except the mainboard from AT&T.
Even with a LTE mainboard, I can use any part of a Wifi Note Pro SM-P900 except the rear camera as they are exactly the same.
Or I can change a LTE Note Pro to a Wifi Note Pro by swapping the mainboard and rear camera, the rest are identical.
From my experiences of varieties of Samsung tablets, I don't see any major differences of Note Pro LTE and Wifi versions as they almost use the same parts.
By using a mainboard of Tab Pro in a Note Pro tablet, I can even change a Note Pro to a Tab Pro as they are using the same parts except the Tab Pro mainboard doesn't have S Pen cable connector, it works normally as a Tab Pro.
That means I can downgrade a LTE Note Pro to Wifi Note Pro or Wifi Tab Pro by only swapping mainboard and rear camera.
Given the fact that LTE tablets sold in US have different names but actually they are Identical , I can tell Samsung makes the same tablet but the differences
are software and firmware loaded into it, like SM-P905A, SM-P907V, SM-P907T, they're branded by LTE providers but the hardwares are the same
