sgs4g newbie - Samsung Galaxy S (4G Model)

i cant install cwm on my phone, i flashed the stock gingerbread rom but i dont know how to root and install cmw so that i can flash custom firmwares.

superoneclick to root and then flash new kernel with sgs kernel flasher or some thing. or use this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1333423 (cwm version) and then you will have root and cwm.

Any one of these will help you get the proper kernel support to install custom roms via cwm.
This one uses odin to get you ready. It has steps you have to be comfortable doing buts its pretty failsafe.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1223765
This one was created to clear gremlins but it will get you loaded with a custom recovery and ready to install any rom you want. This is really a one click option. Probably the easiest IMO because you dont have to do anything but click a button once and wait for it to do its thing.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1500427
This one is suppose to be the easiest. It doesnt involve odin or hemidall.

You are still incorrect. That is not the easiest way to get CWM. And you are welcome. The first link in my signature is the easiest way for NOOBS to get going. Read it and you will see. No Heimdall. No ODIN. Very easy stuff.
Rooting and downloading SGS Kernel Flasher beats the hell out of Heimdall and ODIN if you ask me.

[Q] att firmware upgrade 2.3.6 root?

Hi noob here with a general question about the official 2.3.6 att upgrade, hope i posted in the right place. question is basically if and when the phone can gain root access. any answeres would be grately appreciated. thanx
it can gain root access now there just isn't a thread on it yet. I'd tell ya how but then nobody would see it. I am woking on packaging all the parts together and starting a thread. in the future it will get easier however if new kernel sorces are released. the only way to get root right now is through a kernel and the existing kernels have a few issues on the new firmware so you have to flash back to the stock one after.
adding a script to in initramfs on the new kernel is possible but the problem is that repcking initramfs in a kernel to flash to the phone is such a waste if the parts to build a better kernel are just around the corner.

Something like that.
There are some threads in the general and the q/a on the method.
Seriously, though, Victory runs on stock kernel and rooted and optimized uckl2.
Sounds like Dani will release a rooted package in a few days

There is no need to use kies...you can if you want.
Just use odin or heimdall and flash the uckl2 leak pretzket posted in the dev section.
go to Victory OP page.

On Victory OP, the second post has an odin infused gb kernel - towards the bottomof the page.
you can download that kernel to your pc.
you will need to know how to use odin.
you will need to dl victory..some the of links still works..the mulitload first link doesn't..the deposit link..4-5 down still works
after you odin the kernel, you will boot into a red recovery..
you will need to go to the voodoo option and disable lagfix
then you can flash victory through the cwm menu
make sure you disable lagfix like the OP says..follow direction ...you are alread on rfs file system..not ext4
if you mess up and get stuck on the bootloop..don't worry..odin back to stock..whichever stock and start over.

After you have DL the odin infused gb kernel and flashed it,
you will need to boot into recovery. it should be red.
instead of going into voodoo lagfix to disable, you will not have to do anything with it.
you will only need to factory reset, wipe data and wipe cache, go to advance, wipe dalvik.
then flash zeus build 5.2 stock.
zeus uses voodoo file sytem (ext4) ..
victory uses stock uckl2 rfs file system. that is why hdmi output is not broken.
read my help page a few times..it should help clear things up...there are some links on there that will be helpful

yes. root is not actually in the kernel for use. its a script that moves it to the rom where it stays. the root kernel is only needed for 1 boot. its the only way to move a file with root privilege before you gain root privilege for the user.
I was working on a oneclick root kernel package and an update.zip to return You to the stock kernel and update su but my update script keeps getting parsing error. I have to do it all over again in a different text editor... lame. the update.zip would be good even for custom roms because I added vold.fstab from the stock rom which will fix sdcard mounting if it was changed for a Rogers kernel.

Did you download the odin infused gb kernel from post #2 in the victory thread?
Open it with 7zip.
Extract odin and the kernel.
If you have the correct drivers, run odin.
It should show up comm## something.
Put the kernel in the pda...i think..havent used odin in a while.
Put your phone in DOWNLOAD mode, see my help page. Flash with odin.

Complete noob to rooting and confused

Right, so after growing bored with using the stock Sense ROM, I've decided to try rooting my phone for the first time ever. And I literally have no idea what I'm doing. The phone is unlocked using HTCdev. The HBoot version is 1.27.0000, so the Revolutionary way of doing things isn't going to work for me. I've had a look at the Juopunutbear way of achieving S-Off, but here is where I've hit a brick wall. It says my phone must be rooted, but that's what I'm trying to do. Can somebody please help, as I literally have no idea what I'm doing. Any help would be very much appreciated. Thanks in advance!
rooting
Hi before you start get good instructions for your device
I know xda has wonderful instructions for your h boot, so does HTC sensation forums. What I did was PRINT out the instructions so I would have them in front of me because you do NOT want to miss ANY steps. For me it was just easier to have instructions In hand. Follow those instructions to a tee! They will walk you through EVERY STEP!if you follow the instructions you will do just fine and be happily rooted. Take my advice and print the instructions because it makes it a lot easier to remember if you look in rooting you should find EVERYTHING you need RIGHT there! I do wish you the very best and I'm sure you will do very well and be rooted in no time! Just make sure to follow the instructions.Good Luck and please let us know how it goes, OK ?
I would start by relocking your bootloader using the Toolkit in the Development section, then follow the guide below to do the rest:

The SDK has a version for Mac users. All you have to do is flash the recovery via fast boot, then you can root very easily by downloading Super User or SuperSU and installing them. I personally suggest SuperSU. Then you will need to download and install BusyBox. If you want to check and see if you have root just download and install Root Checker.
Much easier than that...
Once recovery is flashed via fast boot, you can just flash a rooted rom and it will root the phone. This means u don't need to bother with flashing busybox, supersu etc

When you boot to the Hboot screen, after the booloader runs a check for a PM58IMG.zip on the root of your SD card. You should see a a couple of options, you want to select recover. But only select recovery if you have flashed a custom recovery already, the stock recovery will not flash a custom ROM so booting into it is almost useless. Anyway, once you are in recovery you should see a option that says install from SD card, again a stock recovery does not have this option.

See, I checked out the link, and I searched all night last night. In order to flash a custom recovery, the phone needs to be rooted. Which method are you using to get root and CWM recovery? It sounds like you are trying to use the old method of installing the modified 3e recovery and then using an update.zip. There is an updated way to do this with AT&T 2.3.6, and the old way doesn't quite work the same anymore. Let me know which method you're trying so I know where to direct you from there.
EDIT: Since I'm pretty sure that you are using the old method from stock Froyo to get root and CWM recovery, take a look at this thread. It's a how-to that explains most of the ways to get root and CWM recovery on 2.3.6.:

It sounds like the old way using an update.zip. In Froyo, we used to replace the stock recovery with a 3e recovery that would allow unsigned files to be flashed. Then we'd flash an update.zip that contained CWM recovery. Just curious, how did you root, and is this AT&T Gingerbread?
I'd read through that how-to thread I posted. If you can use Heimdall or Odin, there are some quick ways to get CWM recovery. In that thread, I've also outlined how to do it yourself on stock 2.3.6.

To get Gingerbread with CWM recovery for flashing roms, you could flash Option C or Option D from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1613523
Or, if you prefer Heimdall, qkster has some nice one-click packages. There are links for those in the first thread I gave you.
If you already have root (How did you root, again?), then you could just flash one of the Gingerbread kernel / CWM recovery packages from here.:

Before you go any further, we need to investigate something. First, let's confirm that you are on AT&T 2.3.6, because most of us haven't found or made a working one-click program to root stock 2.3.6 directly. Can you go to Settings / About Phone and tell me what is listed under "Baseband version"?
If you can do that to confirm that this is AT&T 2.3.6, I'd really like to know what program you used. Or did you root the phone before you were on Gingerbread?
Any of those links that I've given you in the last post will give you CWM (clockwork) recovery to install different roms. An easy way would be to do Option C or Option D at this one. Either one will do. Here's the link again.:

I'm assuming you're on stock Gingerbread.
Flashing a one-click kernel with CWM built in, via Heimdall, is a pretty simple way of doing it. It's not quite as simple as what you seem to be looking for, but it's not difficult at all.
Click the following link and scroll down til you see Heimdall Suite 1.3.1. Download and install that.

Once you have Heimdall installed and running properly, download and flash Entropy's 4.4.2012 Kernel from post #2. That'll flash the new insecure kernel, as well as CWM Red. Once that's done, you'll have a working CWM installation and be able to flash whatever you want.

Once you have Heimdall installed and running properly, download and flash Entropy's 4.4.2012 Kernel from post #2. That'll flash the new insecure kernel, as well as CWM Red. Once that's done, you'll have a working CWM installation and be able to flash whatever you want.

The problem with heimdall, it keeps asking me to install driver or change, which I do over and over...
And the 2nd link refers to froyo, I'd rather avoid touching that period...
How many devices you have? Is it safe to assume this is the same as the following link? Answers will probably be the same.

Just got this phone and I have a few questions?

So i just got this phone. I was told it was rooted and running alliance rom but its not they took it back to stock i guess. I am wanting to put alliance rom on it. It is on 4.3 and its nc1. It has safestrap on it because super user is on it and when i go into the safestrap app and go to recovery it takes me to the safestrap recovery. I tried to install twrp and it said root was required so i check root with root checker and it says its not rooted. My goal is to have it rooted running alliance rom (or if y'all have any suggestions on roms lol feel free to suggest) and being running smooth. any information would be helpful. thanks! :good:

use safestrap to install alliance, Now that you are on 4.3 you can not use the normal version of twrp. You can install over the stock rom I wouldn't recommend it but I understand why people do.

I think its just the modules you need to flash (fixes wifi for locked phones). The modem flash is for people on a unlocked bootloader. If you have connectivity problems try to flash the modem file because alliance is based on ml1 and nobody is sure if the modem is different in the new update.

As long as you don't try to downgrade past 4.3 or try to unlock your bootloader your pretty safe. Any brick you encounter can easily be fixed by a ml1 or nc1 odin flash. If the modem doesn't work with alliance you wont brick by flashing the ml1 modem. seriously stay away from pre 4.3 odin files, bootloader unlock, and custom recovery's that are not safestrap its a headache to unbrick. Also be aware that you can only flash touch wiz 4.3 roms (no aosp).

Well that answers a question I had does safestrap work on nc1. Flash ml1 in odin and root with saferoot then install safestrap. You should be good to go after that.

if you stay on 4.3 and do not unplug mid flash its safe enough. I have never had a problem other than the time I tried to odin to 4.1.2 after I took the 4.3 update.
