[Q] Help with WiFi XOOM Root - Xoom Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a XOOM running the new 4.0.3, IML77, with kernel version 2.6.39.4-gf03a679, [email protected] #1.
I have rooted many devices in the past, including this same XOOM when it was on Honeycomb, have followed every guide I could find, but have, so far, been unsuccessful in rooting this thing.
Can someone point me to a step-by-step guide please?
also, when I'm, finally rooted, what is the easiest way to enable full SD CARD capabilities (read/write/etc)?
Thanks so much in advance.

Any Model, Any version.

[Q] Achieving Root on stock ROM?

Is it possible to simply achieve root on the stock 3.1 ROM? While I easily followed, understood and successfully rooted my Inspire4G, I seem to be having a harder time wrapping my head around the process for my new Xoom WiFi. I'm sure I will soon do it, but am currently analyzing all possible paths. I do not want a 10.1 inch brick.
Question 2: I noticed most methods involve placing files onto an sdcard. I have one, but was under the impression that there was no support for the card and the Xoom yet. How are those files used if they are not visible.? Do they become visible after flashing new ROM? Confused.
Thanks in advance.

Yes, there are a few guides in the Development section that are quite good. I would avoid any "one click" method, however. Do you want to flash a new recovery and custom kernel/rom or do you want to remain stock after rooting?
Edit: I hadn't seen your second question until I had responded to the first.
Well here's where the custom recovery and kernel/rom comes in.
The Team Tiamat kernels/roms add functionality of external SD card among other wonderful things. I urge you to consider flashing one of them. The configuration I have (in my signature) works really well and adds a lot of functionality to the Xoom. It's basically the latest Tiamat recovery and Tiamat Rom 1.1. You may have to also flash a bootloader that's appropriate to your Xoom, though you may be able to avoid that extra step.
Read as much as you can in the relevant threads and when you choose a method, follow it carefully. Just get everything ready in advance, take your time and you'll be fine.
Good luck and enjoy!
I just rooted my wifi xoom using this procedure. It was pretty straight forward and everything worked perfectly.

[Q] Looking for step-by-step directions for rooting US 3G 3.2 stock (build HTJ85B).

Okay. I am a virgin rooter, but I have I have been following the various threads for awhile and I am ready to take the plunge. Love the Xoom but would like to be able to read-write micro-SD and have better USB access to external storage and devices (and tinker with OC, etc). I find instructions for various configurations, but not mine. The forum help looks terrific but I would like to start down the correct path. Can anyone point me to a proven method for my configuration (US 3G 3.2 stock)?
Thanks in advance.

Thanks. I will read and reread (several times) before attempting. Probably won't get to it until this weekend. I'm a bit anxious about using the wifi instructions on a three-G. We'll see what happens...
I'll go out on a limb here and add that YD, may be like myself, I read the instructions tonight, I'm in the same boat, but when I say I'm a Virg. rooter, I mean that I'm I'm totally new to Linux/android and the instructions still don't make sense.
Sooo, is there a dummy version that fills in some of the little details? What I got out of the post was that all the downloads go on your laptop or desktop and after setting things up on ur PC you attach ur xoom via USB? That really is the extent of my understanding.

I'm not much more experienced than you virgins, but I have rooted my xoom and have uploaded a different rom. It was a lot of trial and error. Mostly error. I'd be happy to talk to either of you on google talk and walk you through it if you have any questions. Again I'm not a pro, but some of the instructions are intimidating for the first-timers, and maybe I can help make some sense to it. My gtalk is radi0chik. the 0 is a zero.

If you are willing to downgrade I posted a possible solution at the end of this thread: http://www.xoomforums.com/forum/motorola-xoom-development/8693-xoom-3g-3-2-first-root-2.html

Have you tried this link?
http://www.mydroidworld.com/forums/...-update-your-3g-xoom-3-2-directions-file.html
If you already rooted I followed the instructions under the header "You Must Use this nandroid backup if you are running a non stock Rom. This is already Rooted"
All you're doing there is upgrading the recovery then restoring a backup for 3.2 that is rooted. No wipe needed. It just restores the files you need to be on 3.2. Once I was done it stopped nagging me to do the 3.2 update & said I was up to date.
Done!
I finally got around to trying to root my 3G 3.2 stock. I used the updated tutorial from jase33 at this link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1170760
I had a few minor issues that I was able to resolve without too much difficulty (slow and steady). I see at least one other poster on that thread had a similar issue.
[oshizzle1991] "I was able to unlock my bootloader, but when i try and flash the rootboot.img, i get this error "error: cannot load "rootboot.img"" any ideas? i'm very experienced with adb and rooting lol, its not like i dont have adb or fastboot set up. any help would be appreciated!"
I found a solution but I wasn't able to post it on that thread (Developer's) because I am a newb. Here's what worked for me. After receiving the same error message (several times), I typed this in at the command prompt:
cd C:\android-sdk-windows\platform-tools
THEN I continued with the tutorial from where I had been stuck::
fastboot flash boot 3Grootboot.img
It was smooth sailing the rest of the way.
Big THANKS to jase33.

[Q] How to root TW 8.6.5.9 20110816?

I have stock TW_epad-8.6.5.9-20110816. I noticed a couple of ways to root older versions.
How about my rom version? Which way to go to root my TF?
I have the same issue, I had it rooted when it was 8.6.5.6 but when I did the upgrade and tried to reroot it with the instructions from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1125714, the same instructions I used the first time, with the new boot image provided and followed all the same instructions, yet for some reason it is not rooting this time.
may i ask which updated version are you on? is it 8.6.5.9tw? and what happened to the TF after you cannot root it this time
also very curious to know if it's my firmware. I also have 8.6.5.9 20110816
I've tried countless rooting and trying to install cwm and flashing roms... I literally kept running into walls. So after some less doing and more reading, I am suspecting it might have something to do with my device itself.
Also, I read that it might be related to the fact I have the newer TF, B70K?
if anyone can confirm or relate, that'd be much appreciated
thanks

I successfully rooted my recently updated Tranformer using this method: http://www.todaytablet.com/step-by-...omb-3-2-root-with-one-click-for-windows-user/
I actually rooted my device with the same procedure. I learned about 8.6.5.9 20110816 twenty minuts later (doh!). This removed root of course. I re-rooted it using the same instructions and image I burned. Rooted once again.
Sucessfuly rooted and installed CWM and custom ROM
Guys,
yesterday i received my transformer from germany, DE build 8.5.6.9 version. I managed to root it with this method
Here is the link

[Q] Help needed finding the right rooting article here

After an earlier failed attempt I managed with some help from here to get back to a stock rom and then upgrade it through KIES
However don't want to give up here and still want to get the tablet rooted as easily and safely as possible. So have a few questions - not looking for detailed answers but perhaps someone can point me to the right article
I have a Galaxy TAB2 10.1 WiFi only GT-P5100
I am currently running Android 4.1.1
Can someone point me to step by step instructions which will just root my tablet without changing the current version I am on - Ideally I dont want added steps to install an earlier version
No need to reply thanks - I ran CF-Auto root which I had tried before but it failed previously because I had accidently downloaded the 3 g version
this time it ran perfectly exactly as it should and have just verified that my tablet is now ROOTED in the end I followed these instructions as they were easier to follow http://www.teamandroid.com/2012/12/...01-p5110-android-411-404-official-firmware/2/ but I did check first that they seemed to correspond with what I could find on here as well - I felt more confident with this site because it said it would update from 4.1.1

[Q] Rooting non-us device mz604

I'm looking to root my xoom device after realising I won't be getting any more updates after ics 4.0.4. I've read a lot of threads but they seem to be for us devices only. The more I read the more confused i'm getting. My device is mz604 wifi ics4.0.4. I'm in Ireland so its eu version. Im looking to root and try out custom roms. Would prefer twrp recovery but cwm would sufice if it needs to be that way. I've done a backup of all my data but the more i read the more threads conflict cause they are old enough. Just looking to put a bit of life back into my device. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
