So I didn't want to bog down posting something that has been answered multiple times over and over again but I am throughly confused on rooting, loading a custom ROM and kernel. So if you can give a straight forward answer to a straight forward question please do.
How do I:
Permanently root my Epic?
After reading I think I would like to install the Epic Experience ROM?
If I install the Epic Experience ROM do I also install the Phoenix kernel (Phoenix kernel is the one I like)?
What is the correct process for installing those kernels and ROMS?
Detailed responses are greatly appreciated!
I am almost thinking that I should wait for the FROYO update to roll out but my usage destroys my battery life and I cannot have my phone dying on me half way throughout the day. It seems the choices I have made (Epic Experience ROM and Phoenix kernel) will greatly improve my battery life. If I do chose to mod my phone does this affect my OTA to FROYO in the future?
Thanks in advance to all your help!

Refer to the guide at the bottom of my signature.
For your question about flashing kernels and ROMs, you'll flash them at the same time from Clockwork recovery.
Can't type all of your answers...it would take me a while so INSTEAD.....go to the stickies....read and follow the first sticky....then go to the third sticky and download what you need....also if not mentioned in those stickies after the first and before going to the third sticky down ......clockwork recovery.....prob in the third sticky tho.....enjoy and welcome
Edit: looks like i still got beat to the punch anyway

No problem. Feel free to PM me or add me on Gtalk, too. I'm always willing to help.
I've been lurking for a while, I will have my Epic Monday so I'm just preparing to root in the evening. I've rooted my Hero so I'm not a complete noob but do have a question.
I have downloaded the following:
-Clockwork Recovery
-Epic Experience ROM
-Sammy Drivers
Is this right, run the one click clockwork batch file which will root me and put clockwork recovery on the sd card so I can boot into recovery, nandroid then flash a rom?
Im not understanding the need to joeykrim root if noobl's clockwork gives perma root.
The EE rom doesnt include a kernel, so you will want to decide on which you would like to download.
As far as I understand, if you only install clockwork recovery (without the one click root), you will have the ability to flash a rom and kernel, but you wont necessarly have root unless you flash a rooted kernel, then you definately will have root.
Got it. Thanks! I actually have phoenix kernel ready to flash once EE is nandroided so i should be all good for root! Thanks for your help!
The first step is probably the most difficult and that is getting you phone recognized by your computer. You have to get the drivers recognized and make sure you have a cable that actually works and a usb port that magically works. The best way to test the cable is first get you phone working in mass storage mode. Then after you can get you phone recognized in usb debug mode you have easy sailing.
I am sure this should be covered in DevinXtreme's walkthrough these are just my 2 cents from my experience.
Edit: I just checked the walkthrough and both of the driver downloads seem to not work they both come up as 227 byte files
also 2 things, which, if they are confusing then just ignore me but I never had to type anything into the cmd prompt and mine worked just fine. Also zip files you want to flash using clockwork mod can be placed anywhere not just on root of sd card. I keep my stuff pretty organized.
There's a video walkthrough on youtube
The video root guide is quite helpful. If you have issues getting your PC to "see" your phone try USB ports on the back of your tower until Windows recognizes it. Front case ports seem to be a no-no for phone recognition. Even getting the same rear port to recognize the phone can be tricky... just play the USB shuffle until one works. It will eventually after installing the Samsung drivers. I've read the stock USB cable is crap, always worked for me though.

I would recommend the guide from the following link:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=798067
Easy to follow, and as long as you know what youre doing you should be good. So easy, a 12 year old can do it.
IF you use your phone as much as I do, nothing besides a back up battery will help you ensure you can use your phone an entire day. Plenty of people claim great battery life. However, what ive noticed is that battery life fully depends and varies due to certain factors that you cannot 100% emulate unless you have their exact set up, with their exact apps and exact settings for every app and every function, and sometimes their exact location or service with the network, 4G or WiFi.
Personally, I prefer Epic Experience with Mixup Kernel. I like the look of AOSP Magic ROM, but Epic Experience seems to have better speed and the Dev responds and updates frequently.
Greetings to all Xoom users!
I'm a happy Xoom Wifi user (HWI69) with some basic root questions.
- If I unlock and root my Xoom will I be able to unroot and relock my xoom since the official motorola files are out?
- If I follow the procedure to unlock and root the xoom will I lose all the apps/configuration that I have customized?
- Is there a way to make a full backup without rooting?
- Is there anyway to use the sdcard slot without rooting the xoom?
- Any news on a motorola update that will activate the sdcard slot?
- I saw quite a lot of users who have bricked their wifi xoom trying to root the beast. Since the official motorola wifi files are available is it guaranty that I will be able to unbrick my xoom if something goes wrong?
- Is there a difference between soft brick and hard brick?
I think that's all for the moment
Thanks for your help!

They have had problems only because they attempted to relock without flashing the official Motorola images first; Motorola did not have these available for download until very recently. So long as you don't try and relock without the correct images on the device first, you should be fine.

Thanks for the answers ! I have read about all the posts on the Xoom section and i asked those questions because im kind of confused as the informations found are quite different depending on the model/date of the posts.
Some more questions
- For the unrooted backup do you have any app suggestions ?
- What is the purpose of ClockWorkMod Recovery ? Will it protect me from flashing the wrong xoom files (boot ?) ? Kind of a HardSPL/USPL we use with the HTC custom roms ?

If you do it properly, I don't see why not.
I use My Backup Pro. It's not free but its pretty good. Actually haven't tried it yet on the Zoom but it works fine on my EVO. For rooted users Titanium Backup is good.
The custom recovery will be the foundation of "easy" upgrades to new Rom's, kernels, etc. through flash-able files. Without it you would be required to use ADB to "push" everything to the device. It is also the best backup solution to insure a "complete" backup of your entire system through the Nandroid backup feature. This feature is currently experiencing issues because it is trying to backup the entire "internal" storage to an "external SD card". Since the card is formatted as Fat32 the largest file it can hold is 4GB. This poses a problem because the "internal" drive could have "partitions" larger than 4GB if you have a lot of media on your device. Its still a work in progress. As far as if it "protects" you.....probably not. You need to be sure of what you are doing before using the features.
Regarding the re-lock.... A few users have posted that they were able to re-lock their device but I do not believe anyone has posted as to whether doing so erases any indication that the device was originally un-locked. If you plan on keeping your Xoom for the long haul, I would recommend un-locking and leaving it alone. If for some reason you need to return it for service...THEN worry about re-locking it and dealing any potential pit falls doing so may uncover.

I'm brand new to Android. I just upgraded from the Tilt2. I flashed my original Tilt and my Tilt2 many times. Everything here seems totally alien right now. I've been reading non-stop. However, a couple of things seem ominously elusive.
1. When you create a gold card, do you have to use the same SD Card that you used to create the Gold Card at all times in your phone? Right now I have a 16GB card, but I plan to order a 32GB card. My 16GB card is only class 2. In order to record HD video, I have read that I will need a faster card. Still, I'm anxious to root my phone. I don't want to wait until I get a larger, faster card. Can I root my phone with the 16GB card, and when the 32GB card arrives, just pop it out, insert the the 32GB card, and have everything still work?
2. I have decided to use the Ace-Hack Kit to emancipate my phone. I know that this request usually brings out the flame throwers. I thought I would then flash Core Droid. It seems like it's the most popular Rom here. It has over 4,000 replies to the thread. Does that sound like a reasonable place for a total noob to start?
Thanks.
This thread will likely be moved to general so please in the future post these things there. We like to keep this sub forum clean for development only.
That said...
1. Absolutely. You can put your gold card up once you're rooted and pop in the 32. No problem.
2. Great choice . Although there are alot a good roms out there to choose from with good devs behind them. Try a few.
3. Welcome to android

First, please post questions in the general section. The development section is for.....development.
On your first question. You can do whatever you want with the gold card once your done rooting. Take it out, reformat and reuse it, save it for another root.
On your second question, number of posts on a ROM thread doesn't mean anything. What about new ROMs that just came out that only 10 people have posted to so far?
Post count =/= popularity contest.
Your choice of Core Droid is as good as any other choice. In other words, root, read the thread of a potential ROM, and you will get a feel for what people are liking/disliking about that ROM, then flash it and judge for yourself.
Thanks for your reply.
I realize that older roms will have more replies. Since I'm new, I just wanted to start with something that a lot of people have used and could help me with. This seems infinitely more complicated that flashing a Tilt2. I'm pretty nervous.
This is what I plan to do, sound okay?
Liberate the phone using Ace Hack Kit.
Reinstall stock radio.
Flash Core Droid.
Am I missing anything?

Yes.
1. Read
2. Read
3. Read
4. Root
5. Flash stock ROM
6. Flash CoreDroid
7. Post in the correct section next time.
Okay
In the "effen manual" in the Ace Hack Kit, it gives instructions for reflashing the stock radio and the stock rom after you've rooted the phone. Per your suggestion, I will be sure to reflash the phone to stock before I install Core Droid. I am reading like crazy. There's just a ton of stuff that isn't applicable, man.
I figured the menu that allows you to restore the phone to stock was put in the Ace Hack Kit just in case you needed to return the phone for insurance purposes. I didn't realize it was a critical step in the process. Thanks for the clarification.

I was parroting back what you had written semi-sarcastically, and didn't realize it was misleading. For that I apologize...
You don't necessarily have to flash back to stock before flashing CoreDroid. You just need s-Off, which the hack kit achieves.
But you do have to flash SOMETHING, because, and I'm not completely up-to-date with the latest version of the hack kit, but last I was aware, you will have, at the end of the process, an intentionally (though meant to be only temporary) downgraded rom.
That menu you speak of may just be the newer version of the hack kit making it easier for people to get a working rom, instead of leaving with the downgraded ROM, and wondering why **** isn't working right. That's a common speed bump people run into. They think they're done, and don't realize part of this process *MUST* downgrade the ROM this one initial time,in order to make it rootable going forward.
At that point, its up to the rooter to flash a fully functional ROM.
Now, *as long as you've got s-Off*, which you will be able to check when you reboot the phone into hboot, you can flash any ROM you want.
You'll be rooted if you flash a rooted ROM, CoreDroid, whatever.
Okay.
I'm starting to see the light.
After I have have downgraded the rom using the Ace Hack Kit, I reflash the stock radio but not the stock rom? Then I install core droid (or whatever custom rom I want)? The radio will not be affected by flashing a custom rom? The stock radio will work with core droid?

Like I said, I'm not fully up to date with the hack kit. Your best source of information about the state of the radio it leaves you with is the manual, or that thread.
I don't want to give you answers I'm not qualified to give. I used bubby's method, and that took care of getting back to a stock, rooted ROM with the stock radio.
At that point I flashed a different ROM, and later still, eventually updated my radio to the most recent one.
So I took a different path, but have a basic, very basic, awareness of the hack kit/related concepts.
That's why you should seek out the answers specific to the hack kit/CoreDroid in their respective threads.
Thanks
You've been very helpful.
Thread closed since you laready got your answers. Also, please post in the correct sections .
Hi,
I am new to the android OS and, after seeing netflix still doesn't work after the 3.2 update, I am ready to root my TF.
I think I had read enough before the 3.2 update to root the 3.1, but now with the 3.2 installed, I have a question.
I have been looking at the thread called
"Batch script Pure Root Method for 8.4.4.11 & 8.6.5.6US - v5 beta update"
and am thinking if this is the one I use to root my stock unrooted 3.2 TF to a rooted TF. Is that correct? Oh and do I have to use the v5 or can I use the v4. I just want to make sure before I do something that's not reversible.
Actually I am quite a bit confused, but I think I am slowly getting there..
thanks for any help,
John
8.5.5.6 is the 3.2 update, so if a method says it will work with 8.5.5.6 (and the comments on that thread concur), then that one should work for you. I don't know if you can use the v4 version of the script, but since v5 is available, I would use that.
If you follow the steps carefully, you can be rooted in under 10 minutes with no skills other than being able to read and operate a mouse required. Then once you are rooted, you can learn as much or as little about the android OS as you want.

Hi,
Thanks, Yes someone answered my question in that thread after I had read through it. I think what was throwing me off was the date the thread was created (which was before the 3.2 update) I guess the thread was updated.
I read through some older threads where commands were entered through the DOS prompt and I took a look at the bat file. I guess I just like to know what is going on incase there is a problem. Still seeing the problems, others have had, which I guess most are from missing drivers, etc...
Thanks for the help, I will let you know what happens when I get the nerve to try this
Oh, I didnt see anything about it in the thread, instructions or FAQ in the batch file. do you know if I need a sd card in it for that method?
thanks again
John
Hi,
I am wanting to root my TF but I am still not exactly sure, I am looking at the thread/method
Batch script Pure Root Method for 8.4.4.11 & 8.6.5.6 US and TW - v5 beta2 update
here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1185104
the thing is, the faq (instructions) in the bat file for v5 havent been updated (or I totally do not understand what I am doing) some of the menu options have changed there number, etc...
One question I have is, do I want to back up my current boot and recovery image before I flash root? in the bat, flash root is steps 1 and 2 where back up current boot.img and recovery.img is step 3. then 4 and 5 are to flash the stock images but there are 2 versions in this method (8.4.4.11 & 8.6.5.6) so I am not sure which gets restored (I will leave that part alone.
If anyone knows, or has used this to root a stock unrooted 3.2 tf please help if you can.
thanks,
John
I used this guide to root my stock non-root tf 3.2, it was really very easy:

Honestly, I read all 39+ pages of that thread mentioned above, and I'm not confident I know what to do, and in what order, so I'm leery of trying it out. A noob like me can easily create an expensive brick if I screw it up. But this one seems sort of "plug-n-play" and is appealing for that reason. If you folks here validate it, I might try it out.

The instruction is assumed that you already unlocked and have custom recovery installed. If you provide your setup we can help.
1. Are you unlocked?
2. Do you have custom recovery installed like either twrp or cwm?
3. What os version you are running currently? I assumed you're on JB?
Thanks for the offer of assistance. I bought the TF700 on ICS, and immediately did the following (based on advice I hopefully gleaned correctly from this board):
- Factory Data Reset three times (by booting with the volume key held down, etc.), even wtih nothing personal done to it (like add my name as Owner, or install anything).
- Loaded the full update downloaded from the ASUS site and flashed (correct term?) accordingly. Those instructions, at least, I could figure out.
- Another FDR.
- Used as normal on the current version of JB. I believe it had a minor JB upgrade shortly after that, which I let it perform through the "You have an update" process.
As it sits, the TF700 works quite well for me, but I use Titanium Backup on my Droid Razr Maxx (for which I rooted using one of those "automated root" programs that worked well), and I'd like to use it here. And Root File Manager (also found on the Droid).
As a noob, the instructions for that other method (using CWM and SuperSU) look like they presume too much knowledge on my part of what to install and when, and I'm leery of creating an expensive brick. For example, there is something in there about "fastboot," but that is completely over my head.

All I want to do is root it. While I know there are some advantages to a custom ROM or Kernel, that's NOT what I forecast doing*. I plan to leave it on JB.
* = Caveat: Eventually ASUS will stop supporting this tablet, at which time I will probably look at custom ROMs if I still own it (and haven't EBay'd it).

Since you already on JB, the only way you could root is to downgrade back to ICS (version .30). Here is general guide line:
1. Download full package firmware .30 from Asus site
2. Then use root tool to root,
3. Download and installed SuperSU to replace the old superuser
4. Download Voodoo OTA root keeper to preserve root (If you have a paid SuperSU version, you just have to click on "preserve root" and it automatically saved root for you).
5. Let the OTA upgrade to JB
6. Once done, use root keeper to restore root.

I think he's looking to ROOT, but not to unlock!
I rooted and unlocked allready on JB
sent from my cutting board
Could you share the steps/sequence (in detail, not like the way they are described in that 40+ page thread, which is (IMHO) sparsely)?
