After an earlier failed attempt I managed with some help from here to get back to a stock rom and then upgrade it through KIES
However don't want to give up here and still want to get the tablet rooted as easily and safely as possible. So have a few questions - not looking for detailed answers but perhaps someone can point me to the right article
I have a Galaxy TAB2 10.1 WiFi only GT-P5100
I am currently running Android 4.1.1
Can someone point me to step by step instructions which will just root my tablet without changing the current version I am on - Ideally I dont want added steps to install an earlier version
No need to reply thanks - I ran CF-Auto root which I had tried before but it failed previously because I had accidently downloaded the 3 g version
this time it ran perfectly exactly as it should and have just verified that my tablet is now ROOTED in the end I followed these instructions as they were easier to follow http://www.teamandroid.com/2012/12/...01-p5110-android-411-404-official-firmware/2/ but I did check first that they seemed to correspond with what I could find on here as well - I felt more confident with this site because it said it would update from 4.1.1

Hi everyone, I have a Nexus S from Best Buy on ATT. Right now I'm stuck with 2.3.4 (build gtj61). I'm very new at this but am trying to research how to upgrade to ICS. From what I can figure I can either Flash the full rom to 2.3.6 and wait for the update to hit, or I can fastboot an image to 2.3.6 or 4.0.4.
What I need to know is which option would be easier for a noob and can you help me find a guide to complete the process. So far the best thing I have found is the guide on android addicted.
Even though it may seem pretty comprehensive to some of you, to a complete noob like myself it is very confusing. For example when it says to download the Android usb / adb driver it doesn't really say what to do with it. And the very next step it shows 2 files that it didn't tell me to dl and basically loses me.
Can anyone tell me what is the easiest way to go about this and what exactly I need to do.
Thanks
Dan
No need to keep repeating the four letter word (noob). We've all been there before. My suggestion to you is of course the safest route for any beginner: find the OTA update.zip for 2.3.6 and wait for the phone to prompt you for the ICS update. And while you're enjoying your stock ICS experience, start reading up on bootloader unlocking, rooting and using custom kernel and ROMs so you can make full use of your Google phone.
Hope this helps! Cheers!

I got mine back from repair today, and of course, they replaced the perfectly working 4.0.4 with a 2.3.6. The phone automatically started downloading the update a mere minute after booting, so what I'm stumped on is why yours didn't automagically update itself right away.
Maybe you could force an update check by typing *#*#2432546#*#* into the dialer, then checking the System Updates point inside About Phone.
Unlocking and flashing custom ROMs can be fraught with problems, and are not exactly for the faint of heart, given that there is no one-click executable to flash new ROMs like there was for Windows Mobile (my old phone was/is an HTC Universal, running Windows Mobile 6.5. A real fossil...). There are many guides on the forum, most of them stickied, be sure to chew through them, make backups, and pray to your chosen deity when you start typing in ADB
drivers are a HUGE pain. If you do this while running a linux distro (I run ubuntu) you don't need drivers. they are native with linux.
Anyways Linux is great and you should stop using winblows.
welcome!

You could always follow the steps in this thread;
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1445621
I used the same Method for My GT-I9020T (T-Mobile)
I was on 2.3.6. A month after my wifes phone got the OTA to 4.0.4 I still was on 2.3.6.
I followed the steps in the thread above and did the Up-Grade Myself.
No rooting, No Boot loader un-locking, From stock recovery.
Worked perfectly for me.
Read through that thread above to see what other AT&T users said about this.
Also his XDA threads are no longer being updated so after reading through the posts, go to his new place here:

to see the latest info and files.
good luck.
I just got my tablet today and im stuck on trying to get it upgraded and rooting it, Ive unlocked it but thats as far as I can seem to go. I cant update from my tablet as "No updates are found".
I did find this thread but it came up with file not found when I went to my firmwre
The Build Number is IM74K.WW_eepad-9.4.3.30-20120604, I looked on the website but couldnt seem to find an update for it.
If it's to root it (Im using Linux) so I can add a Custom ROM then please let me know im still relatively a noob when its comes to rooting etc using Terminal.
If you are still on ICS, you def want to read about nvflash backup. Once you upgrade, this safety net is gone forever !

Yes I have just helped someone with this same request.
You can have a look at my how-to upgrade/downgrade for any JB firmware
However as your coming from ICS have a look at my posts on the last page of this thread, page 243. There are detailed steps on how-to upgrade from ICS to JB 10.4.2.9 then to JB 10.4.2.20, you could also go from 10.4.2.9 to 10.6.1.15.3 here but just make sure you have the correct twrp version - see posts for details on which twrp version to flash for each bootloader
Once on a JB firmware you can follow my how-to to jump between any JB firmware.
Just make sure you flash the correct version of twrp for the bootloader your on.
Let me know if you need any help with any of the steps or have any questions
Im currently stuck on trying to flash TWRP to my device. Im using Linux so unsure of what the commands are for "flashing" it via the terminal. Ive got ADB set up and luckily found a script to root my device. I've got it up to JRO0C.WW_eepad-10.4.2.9-20120809 (Android 4.1.1) now but as I said getting the recovery installed is another game.
Facing the prospect of rooting my first phone, I dilligently researched for what I thought was the soundest info I could find from this site and last night proceeded to dive in. I carefully followed the instructions in downloading the proper files to my laptop, and opened Odin3 v1.85 to finish the process. (As I was doing this, I was watching a great video with detailed foolproof instructions). Once the files were loaded with the right settings and the rooting started, I was surprised to see if finish in less than 60 seconds when Odin flashed a GREEN pass! I thought I was home free and waited for the phone to reboot. Unfortunately, things came to a crashing halt when the phone never got passed the Samsung boot screen.l Fortunately, I was rather quickly able to find out I could get into download mode and found new files to restore the system back to where I started.
What I am hoping someone can answer what may have caused the rooting to stop where it did, and if anyone may have another option of how I can complete rooting the phone. The phone uses the Android 2.3.6 OS Kernel 2.6.35.7 Gingerbread FC09. I also updated the Samsung USB drivers and the files I used were cwm-5.0.2.7-epic4g.tar and Deodexed-FC09-BML.zip.exe
Hi
Thanks for writing to us at XDA Assist. Without knowing exactly which root method you've actually tried it's a bit difficult to suggest how to continue. During my searches I found these threads:

One Click Root & Recovery for the Epic 4G! v2.5.5 Now has ClockworkMod Redirector!

No response in two days, thread closed.
Hi, My Mum has given me her tablet as she says it is so slow and laggy, and she has bought a different one.
I am hoping that someone on here can give me an easy to follow step by step guide on how to root it.
I have rooted a phone in the past, so I am not a complete technophobe. But do need things given to me in step by step form.
And if you say install this or that can you make it clear where to install, (pc or Tablet?)
GT-P3110 is currently running android 4.2.2
Thank you
Jo

I'm new on this forum so I'm not sure if I'm in the right place or if anyone can point me in the right direction
I recently rooted my s8, I did it through Odin and used TWRP and just followed steps because I didn't like the look of the one click root things
Now I'm not sure how to update firmware with a rooted phone, I've heard of flashfire but also read it's a little bit temperamental on Samsung phones and I'm just not sure of the process of how to update while rooted if you even can, any help would be greatly appreciated
