I just got my s2 i777 and I love my phone but now I see you can get it online only. The only ones they sale or the skyrocket. Should I stick with this or upgrade while I still have the option. I don't live in a LTE area. Please give me your opinion's. Thanks.
PS AT&T just put two new towers in my area so I have HSPA+ about 90% of the time.
I'm looking for people that had the i777 and then got the skyrocket.

Because your stuck in a 2 year contract and maybe in those two years LTE will be in your area, so if you buy a non lte phone your screwed either way. Plus, never know, you may move to a LTE area...

I understand the point about being stuck in a contract. I would avoid the contract myself but on the other hand if he knows hes gonna stick with 1 carrier then why not.
Its kinda hard for me to judge this seeing how i have been on LTE for almost a year and it doesnt seem like a big deal to me.
One thing the topic creator should know is the i777 and skyrocket are pretty much different phones so if hes into flashing roms that may make a difference in his decision.
Don't, just stick with what you got. Wait till something comes out don't jump on a phone now. In 6 months time you will find something else better and won't be able to get it. Just my opinion.

I would wait also there will so many more choices in a few months the s2 you have is probably a better phone if you don't have lte. And there is so much more rom wise to flash for your s2 than the skyrocket

If you're within the return period and you think there's a high likelihood of LTE coming to your city in the next two years, then I would switch (this is what I did).
Otherwise, the i777 is just as good as or better than the Skyrocket (unless you really gotta have that extra 0.2' screen real estate). Other than LTE, the only thing that I liked better about the Skyrocket is that the screen wakes up faster when you press the power button. Otherwise, they're pretty much the same. You should wait until until the Skyrocket HD, Sony Ion, or any other new phone coming out this year.

I've had both and they're pretty much the same phone. Some people say exynos processor and all that other junk....real usage they are the same.
If you think you'll get LTE in the next two years get an LTE phone.
Also..buy it off the market place or Craigslist, screw signing a contract.

I started with the 777 and swapped to the 727 25 days into the contract when I heard that LTE was coming to KC.
Both are great handsets, but glad to have LTE-- which is rolling out quickly, so if you are in a metro area there is a good chance you will have it in the next year or so.
If you can switch for not much cost I would say do it.

What phone to go with is going to depend a LOT on where you are. My wife as the 777 and I have the skyrocket. Outside of network they feel like the same phone just mine is a little bigger . In Chicago outside of LTE att's data network is beyond slow it takes about a minute to load a webpage on utms or hspa during rush hour. On lte it's just as fast as when I'm on wifi.
Keep your S2 if you don't have LTE, trust me it's a better phone, imo I prefer the 4'3 size, the square body,it's lighter too, the processor is definately better I used to have a S2 and switched to skyrocket only cause LTE and I notice the difference a lot but I guess I was willing to trade performance over internet speeds.
Simple if no LTE S2 better, if LTE Skyrocket only if you like speeds, if you ok with H+ speeds (3-6mbps) the the S2 still a better choice.
And at the end of the year it won't matter anyways Iphone5 or S3 will be out.

LTE is amazing. If you can get it, it is as good as everyone says. Pings in the 60ms on the average. I've seen up to around 50mbps down. Even when you have weak LTE, you are still getting more than 10mbps. Because of the low pings, it truly feels like wifi. bigger screen is just a tiny bit nicer. But processor is slow. Xvid playback is choppy. 3D games don't run as smooth. Just buttery smoothness you won't get that you got with i777.
I say the i777 is one of the best phones ever made. But lacking LTE. Even though the screen is tiny bit smaller, the i777 is a bit sleeker, more elegant.

I have the GS2, the Skyrocket, and the Vivid and I don't live in a LTE market and I highly doubt I will get it any time soon. I find that the LTE phones get better service in my area Compared to the HSPA+ phones.
Stay with i777, much better device. No screen or speed issues. That phones gets many more things.
Huh?? u guys r all crazy lol. I'm watching 1080p h264 on my phone with no lag or anything, the rendered your app was using must have sucked. Yes exynos is a superior chipset when compared to snapdragon s3, but that's only at the same frequency. In benchmarks its been proven that the higher clock speed of 1.5 more than makes up for the lack of architecture. Don't just spout off nonsense from other reviewers without doing your own homework

Okay so i just left Sprint for Verizon to get the thunderbolt and was royally pissed off lol, but now i'm not. Okay, so i been on the fence contemplating going back to Sprint and decided not to. When i had my EVO (which i still do waiting to sell it), the support it got was amazing, but my 3g on it was sub-par. I live in New York, and i was seriously getting horrid connection. I even thought about all the graphic power the new one is getting, but then i said to myself "half the games in the market don't even use all that power", so isn't it redundant to desire such a powerful phone with so many games work fine on the thunderbolt? I mean, i sound like i'm trying to justify my switch, but just thinking out loud for anyone who feels the same as me. And what up with all the hate on the thunderbolt by Evo users? I thought the Android community was suppose to be together, some of them sound like whining Apple fanbois.

I am not jealous of the new EVO. The reason is two. First I have a moto xoom, so I have a powerful device with a screen big enough to enjoy the power. Second, like you said, is that Sprint is crap. I would have said the opposite a week ago, but I would have been in denial .
The EVO was better than the iPhone 2g/3g/3gs' and Sprint was better than AT&T that I had had for the 3 years prior. As such I was happy with the phone, which was somewhat crippled by the sprint network. The biggest thing I hated about Sprint, was they were INCONSISTENT. Didn't matter if it was peak or off-peak hours everytime I grabbed the phone I had no way of knowing if it would give me an efficient or inefficient experience. In the car I used a Wilson Sleek signal booster which made things like streaming over Pandora or Slacker consistent, but it's a cradle so its not idea for much more than that.
The thunderbird thus far has proven to be a better phone than the old EVO, but more importantly it seems to have hardware that works well on the network. Anyone with an EVO even in a strong 4G area can attest to the 30+ seconds it takes to get a 4G connection, and how it never seemed to come back if the connection in the area was less than idea. The one time so far that my EVO went to 3G, it went back to 4G almost immediately. I live in North Las Vegas, but my part of town has not been the Boonies for 20 years.
In summation. Even if Sprint "does it again" and releases a super friggin awesome phone, as the EVO was, it wont make up for their less than ideal network. Sprint is not bad per se, they just aren't great.

Well of course i know that, just bummed as soon as i jumped ship they release this haha. The obvious, of course, is that we will get something similar also, but just wanted to speak my mind for those who feel like me. I focused more on the specs in the original post, but i was also curious why almost every website i got on about the thunderbolt you have some uptight mad Evo user bashing it, quite comical and sad at the same time.

I too left Sprint (of 5 plus years) for the TB... I am jealous of the Sprint's new EVO, but not their 2.5 GHz WIMAX.. If hey get their 800MHz frequency up and running with LTE or even move WIMAX there or maybe even WIMAX 2, then I shall return

Nice hardware is useless when the service is useless. I've been a Sprint customer forever but lately their 3G is useless and 4G coverage is spotty and slower than when it was first rolled out. The HTC Thunderbolt hardware is no comparison to Samsung Epic 4G, mainly AMOLED screen/CPU/GPU performance, but the superior LTE connectivity makes the hardware inferiority a small compromise.

I will never go back to Sprint ever after they treated me terribly when I complained about getting 1x speeds in the city of Chicago outdoors in an area marked "best indoor 4g coverage" on their map. With Verizon I get 4g anywhere indoors and don't have to stick my head and arm way out the window to get decent data speeds. And on Sprint the decent data speeds are literally 400kbps. see thread "data speeds, wtf?" in the Evo general forum.

No I don't think the infuse has a LTE chip in it. LTE is a completely separate chip and it eats batteries like CRAZY!!!!!
I get about 8mbs down in my work area and 6MB at home.... I am pretty satisfied with those speeds.... Stream movies no problem on it.

Really not true. Lte is great. The thunderbolt just has a tiny battery. Those claiming they don't want it haven't used it.
I get 4-5 times your download speed with lower ping for the same price. Upload is probably way more. And 6mb on att is hardly consistent.

Well we have battery issue in Infuse 4g too even without LTE and [email protected] remove the option to turn off 4g, when you charge your infuse, try to turn off data network to turn off 4g,you will notice charging will cut in almost half the time even with wifi on, so 4g on the infuse is always turned on, is the main cause battery is poor not the big screen.

Display is the number one battery drain (depending on use). Followed by the radio(s).

I'm assuming it was a rebuttal. HSPA+ isn't a significant difference from 3g. Disagree completely with it draining much faster.
I wouldn't want LTE ability even if it was available for the Infuse. I see what it does to my friends Thunderbolt and the battery life is atrocious

The only reason why you get good download speeds right now is because Verizon is new to the 4G game and 90% of their users are on 3G so you have the advantage right now wait til you hit Att problem that IPHONE hoggers take up all the bandwith then you can comment.

htc always has bad battery life. have you ever seen an evo? even the inspire users i see complain.
Not interested myself....
LTE or WiMax devices all have putrid battery life and everyone I know that have an evo or thunderbolt keep their 4g off or else they wouldn't make it through HALF a day....plus 4g reception is spotty at best...

I also thought that HSDPA is capable of upto 21 MBPS. I get 6-7 megs down now. what do we really need. I can stream just fine with that and most places I go have wifi.
i used to think highly of lte and lowly of hspa+ as 4g. wimax, lte, and hspa+ are actually all rehashes of 3g technology modified enough to be considered 4g. the problem i have with lte is that the phones are very thick and the battery life is horrible. it makes a better phone when you actually turn 4g off, and thats not good on verizon since their 3g maxes out at 1.5mbit if your lucky. lte is the future of cell phone tech but its seems its not ready right now. ill wait for a good 4g phone.

even the bionic specs out exactly the same, they apparrently need to revamp it though. the verizon techs at the store said it had heat issues.
and i head the droid 3 and x2 are not going to be 4g.

LOL... I had an inspire and went back to iPhone after 2 weeks. I HATED the battery. I'd charge it, go to bed, and wake up and it'd have auto powered off, WTF?!!?
I returned it. I just bought an Infuse 4G... haven't set it up yet, hopefully it's nice on batter.
And FYI on LTE: Seriously? AT&T hasn't launched a single market on LTE... by the time they have the top 50 markets covered it'll be Summer 2012... get real, of course the Infuse doesn't have LTE, haha. If they launch LTE handsets by mid 2012 I'd be shocked. This is AT&T we're talking about.

Overall, I think it's a very solid phone. I'm sure there are plenty of users out there wondering: "Should I buy the Skyrocket?" I'm not sure I answer that unanswerable question in my review, but hopefully it clears things up for anyone who hasn't made up their mind.
One of the main points, that I stress in the conclusion is that AT&T forecasted 170 million covered with LTE by the end of 2012. And, Advanced coming in 2013. If you're committing to two years with a device, don't necessarily go with the SGS2 I777 because LTE doesn't cover your area. I think that's a really valid point. Although the Exynos model is more powerful, LTE is arguably more important to most people.

There have been constant reports of network issues. This is on AT&T's side of things, not the device itself. It seems that the towers are not properly recognizing the device (be it on LTE, HSPA+, etc.) and dropping signal. There is a temporary APN fix in the development fourm. Multiple users have called into AT&T to tell them about it--- I would advise others to do the same so that they know this is a widespread issue.
Other than that, this is a great phone.

Interesting. I haven't experienced any network issues. Then again, I've been cold swapping SIMs and changing APNs on a daily basis between my review unit SIM and personal SIM.

Haven't had any issues. Have root working and just installed the first (of many) deoxed stock rom...... Needs a touch of Alien though, LOL. Glad to see ya. Thinking about a new phone-task? Hope they don't drop a samsung phone in 29 days that is better but so far this phone seems solid. I think it has a lot of potential. Granted the exynos isn'tin it but the snapdragon3 oc'd a little to 1.7ish....I think this phone will be awesome even moreso when there are more LTE areas.
Not to mention NFC support and ICS confirmed.

I was going to get a skyrocket until I researched the differences between it and i777. The LTE is only so much of a positive, especially since you should use wifi whenever you can. Some guy on another thread used 6gb over LTE in a week, which is enough to get you throttled. Someone commented that you can use 2gb over LTE in 20 minutes. For the most part, LTE just means things occur a little faster. I compared Pandora's loading time and some other things between the two and there was only a minor (and sometimes non-existent) difference. The LTE is a plus, but a relatively small one (especially if you don't want to get throttled).
On the plus side, the i777 comes out far ahead. The processor difference is more than just a higher-quality processor. The difference is so great that the skyrocket's processor has to be set to 1.5 ghz just to match the speed and performance of the i777's 1.2 ghz. Have you used (owned) the phone for a day or more? I haven't experienced any lag in day to day use at all. Gaming has not been a problem, although I cannot compare it to the SGS2 since I did not own it. The HSPA+ network is actually a lot better on this phone than my previous Infuse and other phones were. So even if you are not in an LTE area, it could be worth it, especially if you plan on keeping it for two years as LTE becomes more widely available.
If you used the phone in-store that could explain things. After I got rid of the bloatware and cleaned up some routine things (like I do on every phone / computer once purchased) the in-store "lagness" disappeared completely. As far as the "exynos vs snapdragon" debate --- it is still a dual core phone. Most phones can't claim that. While Exynos may be better on sheet, it isn't compatible (yet) with LTE. Given that the day to day experiences are the same (roughly benchmark the same as well), I will put this as a positive for the snapdragon.
Coming from the SGS2 it might not be worth the upgrade (since it just released a month ago). But if anyone is coming from other phones I would recommend this over the SGS2 for the reasons I stated.
Dumb question -- If I go get this from AT&T, am I going to see additional monthly charges due to my "upgrading" to LTE or is my contract the same? If so, say I sell my SGSII and buy the Skyrocket off the secondary market -- Would I get LTE in the areas available with my normal contract?

No you won't see any additional charges. You do have to upgrade (exchange for 4G) your sim card though.

I completely disagree. Man I just don't understand the need to make up lies and no valid point as to why osgs2 is better. You like everyone else are just defending your purchase. For all potential owners do your own research. From my personal experience with both phone your not missing anything but gaining LTE, 4.5 screen, higher HSPA+ speed better battery. If you like lots of custom roms and your a gamer go with the osgs2.

So changing out your 3G for 4G SIM card does that constitute a contract change and then give ATT free reign to change your plan and take away the unlimited grandfathered plans and features that I have had for several years and I am absolutely not willing to change?

Possibly? You would have to ask a store rep. I still have unlimited and my features from my previous plans. I am not sure if a sim card upgrade constitutes as a plan/contract upgrade.

Just was checking and getting feedback...I always ask the rep to NOT change any instance of my plan or adjust anything that will effect the status of it. Thanks for the input and thoughts.
good review Ken. yeah the only problem i have with this thing so far is the resolution (especially when you go from looking at a vivid/raider screen to it). and changing the density is good but then touchwiz and the dialer need to be resized.

If you had a previous "4g" device such as infuse,attic,inspire,or the gs2 you dont need to switch your sim just pop the old out and into your New phone

There is always going to be pros and cons on any phone that comes out. Whether its hardware or looks there will always be people who like it or dislike it. Just from what I have read the lte is only major advantage the skyrocket has. Other then that there pretty close as far as day to day use. I don't live in a lte area and I have no idea when it will actually be available here. I hear people say get the skyrocket now cause in a year or two it lte should be available in most major cities. That's my issue though cause in a year or two there will be a lot more phones that are lte capable out there. They will be faster and probably HD screen (seems to be the way the screens are going now) have the latest software etc etc etc. So I will wait. Even though I have a upgrade next month ill wait. Quad core phones are starting to step into the picture. By next year we should have some amazing phones with outrageous specs. I am jealous at those that live in a lte area. The lte speeds you guys are getting are crazy.

I live in a rural West TN area but AT&T has put up a 3G tower near my home so I left the herd (iphone) and got me a skyrocket but now my skyrocket has slower speed test results than my wife's Iphone 4. I was wondering if anyone else has found this in there skyrocket?

I'm in Rogers but I have bad connection speed in my room,was only get 1 bar LTE and it was killing my battery I was using the kj2 radio by changed to the UCLA3 and my speed has increased by several mbps, as well as signal strength. Flash ucla3 through cwm and see how that works for u

Although I AM a iphone hater , the iphone has always had the best reception compared to all the phones put together on AT&T's network. The reasons for this are obvious..........may not have the best tech features, but it still remains the best BUILT phone as far as hardware is concerned !!
So your wife will always be happier than you when she look at her signal strength !!!
EDIT: Furthermore, the Skyrocket was a hastily put together device to leverage the "new" 4G LTE network that AT&T was desperate to sell. So, this phone came out within months of the plain Galaxy S II, which is thus a better phone in build quality than the Skyrocket.

This, is wrong. The chipset is based off one of the best radios qualcomm has ever produced, and is one of, if not the only pentaband radio with LTE (multi band lte support I might add). You can use the phone with any gsm carrier world wide. As for reception, if you don't have 4g in ur area, use the t989 telus radio, it has much better 3g signal support in my opinion. As for build quality, well its pretty much identical to the s2 exterior wise, so... :-D
I am an ex iPhone user and can say that in my area, the skyrocket blows the iPhone away. This is in signal, call quality and data speeds. Hands down, the Skyrocket is far superior to the overblown iDevices. These statements are from comparing the iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4 and the Skyrocket. Not to mention iPhones have yet to go above 512 RAM and cannot utilize LTE. They are skating on hype and brand recognition, not superior hardware.

yes but that doesn't mean their the same SOC. They possess an entirely different gpu, much more capavle than ours. That's y ios is so "smooth," all the 3d and graphic rendering is offloaded to gpu, unlike android, aka "android lag."

What's up One X peeps? I am currently with Sprint on a Galaxy S2 in the Bristol, Tn area. Not so great of service and it is only 3g coverage for Sprint here so far(no plans in the future to add LTE here as far as I know...which is stupid because the race track is sponsored by Sprint and yet they have the worst service in the area duhuh..)...aaanyway, I am considering AT&T because I can pay a little extra and have 4g almost anywhere I go in the Tri Cities. So I am torn between the S3 and the One X. I have had Sense phones and touchwiz phones so I am really asking if anyone would care to share what they love about their One X and why they chose it over the S3. They are both remarkable but I am honestly leaning toward the One X because it is different in an appealing kind of way. I am just an average user other than rooting every phone I get my hands on. Browsing, texting, listening to music with headphones, email, etc. I had a Nexus S 4G before the S2 and a Hero before that. I have loved all of my phones but I kind of want something different right now. It also helps that the One X is on sale for $99 until September.
Funny you mentioned the race track, I'm right by Pocono and there is no lte either lol, oh wait there's no service at all by the SPRINT sponsored race track! Lolol. So glad I'm on att now

DO IT. I was with Sprint for 5 years, and ever since they got the iPhone my 3G speeds were simply atrocious. How good is having unlimited data when you're pulling 0.5mbps down(on a good day)? And I'm in a network vision completed area! The difference really is night and day, and so damn worth it.
Also, battery life on the One X with LTE is better than my EVO 4G, EVO 3D and Galaxy Nexus ever had on 3G... TIMES TWO. I've left my phone unplugged for eight hours when going to bed, to wake up and find out it only used 2% battery. ON LTE.
There really is no contest here. It's even worth paying an ETF. I sold my (mint condition) Galaxy Nexus on ebay for $350 and paid my ETF with that.

I was a Sprint customer for a decade and finally got fed up with their data speeds. What's the point of unlimited data if you can't even use it? After a brief trial with Verizon, I made the move to AT&T in January and couldn't be happier. The HOX is an absolute beast of a phone and coupled with AT&T's blazing LTE speeds (and even their fast-enough HSPA+ when LTE isn't available) it's pretty much unstoppable. I had heard horror stories about AT&T's customer service before coming over here but my experience with them has been nothing but positive, and I have tested the patience of more than a handful of AT&T reps since making the move. They are friendly, somewhat knowledgeable, they do try to help as best they can, and best of all- they are incredibly easy to manipulate. Do it man, you'll be glad you did.
The main reason I left sprint was due to the horrible 3G speeds. You know how bad it feels to see buffering every 5 seconds on sprint watching youtube? The slowest speed I've got on ATT was 6mbps, thats more than enough for anything I need to do. Sprint, I was barely able to do 0.5mpbs with full bars, pathetic.
Good bye Sprint, You won't ever see me again. I'm paying $10 more a month, but its we'll worth it.
Yeah, I am thinking it is going to be worth the transfer. It doesnt seem too crazy to get root and unlock the bootloader from what I have read so I am sure I can manage. The only work arpund I will have to find is the storage but dropbox is offering the 25gb space still if I am not mistaken.

The latest firmware version (2.20) is not currently rootable, although its being worked on. No root also means no bootloader unlock. It seems that based on reports here, a lot of newly purchased One X's have 2.20 pre-installed. Maybe you can find a store with some older stock (1.73 and 1.85 are okay). But if you need root and unlocked BL right now, be aware when buying.
Also, I think AT&T stopped supporting the Dropbox promotion a while ago.
I'd recommend the secondary market vs buying a new one at this point.
Att gave me a $175 trade on my Epic 4G touch when I came from sprint a month ago...best decision I made in a long time.

come on over! I honestly don't know how people put up with Sprint's data speeds. Also, I don't have any complaints with AT&T except I'm patiently waiting for LTE in Denver (HSPA+ is good enough, but why put up with "good enough" ). I've been with the company since their Cingular days and won't be going anywhere for a while (unless I jump over to Straight Talk to save some $$)
The S3 has better hardware specs but the HOX is better looking.
Basically it comes down to sd card/more ram/removable battery vs better screen and build quality.
IMO the S3 is ugly as sin, with a dated, pedestrian design (seriously, a physical home button?). But some people like it.
If you're a power user you may be better off with the S3 because of the better multitasking (more ram) and storage space. If looks and design matter to you, go with the HOX.
I came from iOS, so the sd card slot and battery were not really a big deal, while the design was.
AT&T's coverage is not as big as Verizon's but the data speeds are nice. Their customer service has always been pretty good on most issues (exceptions being the various things they like to lock down--but Verizon has always been far worse about that anyway).

U know how ppl who have sprint deal with the horrid speeds? by never experiencing good speeds..lol..I've never saw over a mb/s unless on my airave or WiFi....I don't even attempt doing stuff when I'm out and about that requires more than minimal bandwidth..but I'm in the early 2nd round of network vision so hopefully that will change ..if 6mb/s is slow for you then I'm jealous..can't imagine u need much more than that for anything..YouTube app still buffers for me on WiFi when playing hd content..and its 20 down..anyone else have that issue ?

The LTE service that I get is so fast, there is ZERO difference from WiFi, and can even be faster in some cases. When I start watching a video on youtube and switch to HD, it starts playing immediately. I can't even begin to explain how much faster it is compared to even Sprint's solid WiMAX service here in Boston.
Speaking of WiMAX, LTE on AT&T runs at 700mhz, so LTE signals penetrate buildings even better than 3G and voice if you can believe it. I remember with WiMAX my signal would drop if I stepped over a shadow.
And while I've seen bursts of up to 60mbps(I kid you not), It's the insanely low ping times(about 30ms) that make you feel like you're using WiFi.
I think I will go for it. It will cost probably $10-20 mpre a month because pf the discpunt I get with Sprint through my bank...but again, I am tired of waiting for service and having to constantly roam with roamcontrol just to make a phone call in my apartment. I will try to get time to give more thanks later. I believe I talked myself into it earlier today. Design and feel mean a lot to me. And if those Apple fanbois are happy with no removable battery or sd card then I can manage too lol. Thank you all for your input!
