Hi All,
I am using my Galaxy 3 on Froyo for sometime now and now I would like to upgrade to Gingerbread. I am not allowed to post under Development threads. Hence I have this post here.
Please let me know if there is any Gingerbread ROM available.

No, there's not such ROM... developpers still work on Froyo... the others wander whether G3 supports or not Gingerbread and whether Samsung will support or not Gingerbread on G3...
Samsung won't release gingerbread for our phones, I can guarantee you that. We're lucky if we get froyo.
First, is the hardware limitation
Second, there's no point for samsung to officially release it to our phone. We're not paying them anything anymore, It's much more profitable to release a new phone with gingerbread in it. That's how biz-nes works.
@thom47 there is NO hardware limits... if phone runs froyo it can also run gingerbread

I know it can run it technically and people can cope with it, but can Samsung agree to the performance of it is a different thing. But well, we're not getting it anyways so let's not get our hopes up

well if we would have good devs they could port it to sg3 from sgs, i mean how hard could it be?? (YES, i know VERY hard)...
There are not many significant features/improvements in Gingerbread over Froyo..I would be happy to get official Froyo soon..and maybe Cyanogen Mod later

I agree,
a stable Froyo + some usable custom ROM is much more important then still a newest version.
There are not significant advantages - and our hardware (no 3d acceleration, no JIT) has its limits

Why should JIT be a matter of hardware?
MAD-Team has enabled JIT for the G5 too...
Anyway it's very cool to have gingerbread because of the lock animation

for that attitude Samsung will ruin their business very soon just because of no customer support.
Supporting customer is the best way increase brand name and free fund marketing.

Yeah Samsung has also confirmed that we will not be getting ICS:

if samsung has not decleared it officially even though everybody know unofficially by default that samsung will never give us ICS. Never mind still I am happy with 2.3.6 version & waiting for 2.3.7 version...!
this is not official by samsung.this list only includes the devices which has been confirmed for the update and devices which doesn't have any confirmation are stated as will not get ICS.we CAN get confirmation in future but chances for that are very less.

Very little hope of that too. He's got no time for the i9003 and its just lying around somewhere in his house. This phone is one of those unfortunate ones that no one seems to care about or even remember. ROM Manager still doesn't recognize it, most forums don't even acknowledge its existence and Samsung doesn't give two rats about it.
You either have to live with GB, wait for someone to port CM9 (unlikely) or maybe IF Samsung decide to throw a 4.0.x update at it later or just move on to another device that is actually popular and supported by the larger dev community.
I personally got frustrated and went for the Galaxy Nexus but I still have my i9003 and care about it. Its a pretty good device but one of the least supported. The Optimus Black, Droid X and other similar phones have plenty support. Even the super cheap low-end LG, HTC and Samsung phones have more support than the i9003. Its just a mystery why! Samsung just didn't release this device in enough countries.

Pretty sad considering that the original GS and its US variants are basically the Nexus S which already has the update.
At least they left the device running nicely on Gingerbread (even if you need to use ODIN to upgrade depending on your region)
Petition.
If you guys still are in hope of ICS for the i9003, go HERE and sign the petition.
Remember to add the optional message and mention the i9003.
Keep it civil though.
So sammy doesn't seem to honor the 18 months update schedule? Original i9000 was released long ago and i9003 deserves ICS according to the plan...
its not official
i9003 has not completed the 12months support period thats y samsung has to rlease it otherwise we can always ask samsung to xchange our phonz with GALAXY SII
Is that possible .... can we demand such a way?

I didn't know abt the 12 or 18 month support thing... Where is this mentioned??
Can somebody guide with a Internet link or whatever so that I can check..
If that's viable then we don't have to start a petition or anything., instead complaint to our respective Consumer Support Forums.. (no disrespect, but petitions are crap which'll never work)
Samsung threw us(
the industry won't let this happen... new phones will get ics officialy, older phones just will get it modded... always works in that way.
We need to buy about 2 phones for testing some custom android apps we've built.
Does anyone have suggestions on what the best phones for testing would be?
I was thinking something with HTC sense on it, and something with stock android on it. Both need to be able to s-off and root easily.
erm... the google dev phones (nexus) ?? Personally I use galaxy nexus most for this kinda thing
For any kind of software testing, you need to know how it will function on both the latest and greatest devices, as well as the oldest hardware you intend to support.
I'd think for the price of two top-tier 2012 phones, you could buy 1 top of the line current phone, one from last year, and one from 2 years ago. Possibly also include Sense, Touchwiz and vanilla android.
Something running GB and something running ICS/JB. Many phones are still on GB so a used device running GB would be useful to test on.
Test it on emulator first?

Yes for sure it's the first thing to do,but not always if it works on emulator it will work on specific phone
Nexus one and galaxy nexus. Then you've got gingerbread and jellybean covered
If you need a newer phone for testing , the Galaxy Nexus is an obvious choice .
If you need a older phone ( old hardware ) to test yous apps , have a look at Nexus 1 or HTC Desire , it can run flawlessly 2.2 , 2.3 and 4.0.4 . I have a Desire on ICS ( BCM ) so I can tell .

HD2? ROMs range from Android 2.1-4.1 (AOSP, AOKP, CM), Sense 2.0-3.5 (one discontinued Sense 4 alpha), TouchWiz + GB, Xperia Arc GB, MIUI etc. It's also got similar specs to a low-range phone nowadays so that would be a good choice I think. In addition, a One X probably.

It seems it is indeed no contest there.
Does the Galaxy Nexus come with Sense by default? (It's been a while since I've looked into these. Last Android phone I owned was a droid bionic and before that the htc hero.)
We definitely are going to support gingerbread, so we'll need a little bit of an older phone too. I'm sure breaking it up like that into 3 or so phones is ok, as long as they fall under budget.
And yeah, the dev tests with emulators, but I'm QA on this project so I get to play with them real-world once he's done and find more bugs.

GNex is a Nexus phone, so why would it come with Sense?
Anyway, the best choice is still the HD2 IMO. You can test it on all versions of Android from 2.1-4.1 and it's incredibly cheap, with specs which are not too bad (1GHz Snapdragon with 576MB RAM) for the price. If you can get the app to run smoothly on the HD2 the likelihood is that it will run on any newer phone.
IMHO you have yo use a stock device.. nexus as all the docs suggest. Custom ROMs have additions substitutions and tweaks that in a dev sense are not baseline. Although the differences are minimal or should be. Better to play safe. So nexus s and galaxy nexus.. Google provide stock ROMs for these in dev device downloads.

Noted. Thanks.
And yeah, that's cool that some of these phones support plenty of roms, but I don't want to be flashing 3 different roms every time the dev iterates a new point (v.2) update. I'd rather have 2-3 phones ready to go. (seems lazy, but I've got a lot of other work to do to
We got a droid (motorola timestamp issues), a Galaxy Nexus, and an hd2. So the hd2 comes stock with windows mobile? This is strange to me.

Well, the hd2 does have a lot of support, but when the top threads in the device specific forum warn of how unstable and beta-ish android development is on this phone, then I'm not really as excited as I was. might end up returning this one.
Hello All,
I want to ask you guys that I am getting this Phone in cheap like around $125. I need to ask you guys that in that price is the right phone also I heard that people are complaining regarding this phone which majorly include random reboot. If I root it and flashed it via any custom 4.0 rom will it fix these problems ? Also I didn't understand what are the GB roms mean ? If anyone can suggest me a gud MIUI or any 4.0 rom it would be great.
Many Thanks in advance for your help.

Do yourself and your sanity a favor. DON'T pick up this phone! It's backed by a lying company, and it's an Nvidia based product making it subject to Nvidia's stuck up policy for releasing hardware drivers. Get something else. You'll be happier you did. LG NEVER again!

So....for the sane response. If you're planning on sticking with the stock firmware, then I'd also say to move on to another phone. If you're comfortable flashing a custom rom, I'd say if you can wait a while the this will probably be one of the best phones available.
To clarify, stock on this phone is very poor. CM7 is pretty good, but still has some bugs and obviously lacks all the newer features of ICS/JB. Right now we don't have a good ICS/JB build, but we're hoping to have one soon. Source was recently released for one of our "sister" phones. RC (Arcee, Ricardo) has already released CM10 for the O2x, but is ironing out some details on it atm. The reasonable assumption is that after is done with that, he'll make a version for the G2x (as he did with the "hacked" version of CM9 in the past).
So in short....hardware's great, but software's crap. Hopefully we'll see improvement on the software side soon though

At $125, if you will be satisfied with running Android 2.3.4 such as the stock LG/T-Mobile V21E or V21Y or a modded ROM of either of those such as Weapon, then the phone is a bargain if it is also in very good condition. The phone may or, most likely, won't get any further updates to ICS and/or JB even from developers such as those on XDA or Cyanogenmod (CM10). If you want to get the latest Android, buy a newly released NEXUS qualified phone with JB which will also get future Android updates.
Yeah, for $125 you can pick up a new non-LG phone that is far superior in terms of support and feature set. Anyone who recommends you to buy an LG smartphone does not care for you the way I do. I want you to live your life, not sit here in an XDA forum like the rest of us waiting to be saved by the open source community.

Fixed your post. The p999 will be definitely getting CM10. Right now, were just in a period when all the other devs are being respectful to arcee and waiting for all the kinks to be worked out of the p990 CM10 before porting to the P999. Plus we will most likely get official CM support from arcee as well.

Respect. Odd concept these days unless between gangs when it is used as a warning before all hell breaks loose.
So far, even though asked repsectfully and politely, RC hasn't provided any information about providing CM10 for the P999. I think we're hoping that he will after he gets some of the problems with CM10 for the P990 remedied. Apparently, he doesn't have a P999 but there's a rumour that he's getting one which I hope he does so he can optimize CM10 for the P999 without a lot of iterative programming. It's difficult to figure out what's happening with other developers, whether they're holding back out of "respect" for RC or they're gone from P999 development (there's one XDA member currently trying to port the P990 CM10 ROM but is having serious difficulties doing it).
Hey buddy there isn't anything wrong with the g2x as a phone. It still has tetra 2 and plays well with a lot apps and games. Its much better than any low cost new phone out there.
Leave it stock and maybe rooted and you will be fine.
Unless lg releases ics for it you wont have a full working ics rom for it.
And the problem isn't nvidia! Tegra2 devices are everywhere and the t3 is one the highest demanded chips out there.
Lg isn't totally to blame either.
The problem is anytime you buy a branded version of a phone it has to wait to get its software out too. So since the g2x says T-Mobile on it, they are also the reason the phone doesnt have much respect for the dev community,
Have fun with your 100$ phone. Best you can't find a better one cheaper

I wouldn't let NVIDIA and LG off the hook for blame, they both have caused problems for the phones NVIDIA's chips are in and LG for the phones it makes. I own an unbranded Optimus 2X which is exactly the same as the T-Mobile G2X in every respect except that it is LG's branded phone. How did that happen? It's because it is a Canadian Optimus 2X which was sold by some Canadian cell phone service providers such as WIND Mobile and Mobilicity and operates on the same AWS bands as the T-Mobile G2X. It came with Froyo and, in spite of it being advertised as being upgradeable and to receive an upgrade to Gingerbread, it has not received any Android OS updates at all and, according to LG Canada, never will.
I'd say $75 would be the price I would recommend it at. I paid $200 with contract unfortunately

CM ver will probably continue supports One S but no more HTC Sense. HTC said it officially M7 will receive Android L within 90days so indeed we still have chance but only after kernel sources released.
I doubt we still have any devs live in this board at that time, they probably will all move to other newer HTC phones.
There will still be devs looking to port it, guaranteed. All phones have devs that stick around for a long time.

I guess it is not possible, many devs already not owned their One S and been moved to other phones now. I can't believe the rest of devs will still have it next year. Yes, I think there will still have someone who try to port but it will be a never stable release edition and can not using as a daily driver.
