ICS doesn't use 3.0 kernel. Why? - Eee Pad Transformer Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Why doesn't the new update from Asus uses the 3.0 kernal? aren't there a lot of enhancements with it?

The 2.6.xx kernels vs the 3.0 kernel........
2.6.39.4 is maybe one ver behind 3.0 i think
Besides all the features can be back ported to the kernel that we are using
Also we still have to wait for kernel source before we can expect anything exciting
Sent from my Transformer TF101 using xda premium

its also kernel not kernal.

There aren't a lot of differences between 2.6.39 and 3.0. In fact, Linus made the Linux kernel jump to version 3 because it has 20 years now, not because it's a major release.
So I don't think it really needed as 2.6.39 works well so far

The main reason due to Asus uses the old 2.6.39 (yes old, we are at 3.3 now, with a looot of changes) is because nVidia doesn't provide updated sources for Tegra's devices
That's all

I remember reading on Wikipedia Android History that ICS is based on Kernel v3.0 as default, seems not the case with this one then?
It's not another complaint about ICS, I don't care if it is Kernel v1.0, I just need something that works

Yeah, original ICS from Google is based on newest kernel 3.0, but as i said nVidia just added ICS support to his old 2.6.39 kernel

has nvidia mentione anything about upgrading to 3.0? it seems tegra 3 does use it.

Just noticed spark is using 3.1 kernel. Interesting

Source Kernel ICS

So looking over primes development I see they have OC'd ICS are we not bugging Asus for source kernel at the level we should be or what?

Well most likely they have waited on purpose. Asus is already aware of the few bugs we have with the ICS upgrade. And most of the bugs seem to be kernel related. So once they iron out the bugs we'll get kernel source in due time.

Yep, they are probably working the bugs out of the source (or as many as they can) and will update our TF101s ad release kernel source at that time..I hope anyway..

[Request] Info about kernel dev and lunch target

@ All devs for the TF300T,
I just got a TF300T and was wandering a couple of things. I have been developing a rom for the advent vega (shuttle P10AN01) (ICS and JB). Since i got a TF300T i thought i might check some things over here.
What i am looking for are working kernel sources (hopefully in the 3.x range) and a lunch target. Are the ones on the CyanogenMod GitHub up to date for JB or are there others floating around?
This does not mean i will be actively developing for the TF300T, because the P10AN01 comes first at the moment.

I believe in keeping things as stock as possible. I had to make an exception for that kernel to get the WiFi working in Jellybean (using a 3.1 version of the bcmdhd driver), other than that it is the exact same kernel that Asus released on support.asus.com.
The guys that work on the TF201 look like they play with kernels a lot more so you might want to look at their work.

This is awesome! We need kernel development bad on the tf300t. I asked around to other developers they said they would help but... They don't have the device. When I get home I'll forward you there names.

People,
Please read.. i wrote that i am developing for another tablet and that has to be finished first. Besides asking for information about kernel sources and asking about the development of the kernel does not mean that i am a kernel developer. The device (advent vega) is a tegra2 based device and thus using the kernel sources based on the nvidia kernel tree. That is why i asked because that source tree (current tag is rel-15r7) includes support for Tegra2 and Tegra3.
At the moment for me it is sniffing around and perhaps try a couple of things. That is how it works for me. That is the way it went with the advent vega.

Working 3G kernel for TF300TG

Hi,
I just want to publish JB stock kernel for TF300TG with modem part writen by myself from zero.
I'm usind this kernel for a while and have no problems with 3G hangs, network lost stuff, etc.
ACM (AT control channel), POWER CONTROL and RAW IP NETWORK writen from zero.
Other code (RIL part and BASEBAND CHR for FW update) was not changed (bugfix only).
Installer can be found^
https://dl.dropbox.com/u/90185166/TF300TG-andrewz1-v3.zip
This is a plain stock kernel!
I hope when you share source code, developers will better support model t300tg. And I hope in the future to see a little overclocked version of the kernel. : P
Thanks again andrew_z1 for support kernel. Kernel version v3 is very stable.
Thank you for sharing. Hope this gets a working kernel for CM / AOSP based Roms as well.
Working flawlessy. It is a breathe, to find a person who supports 3g version of a tablet.
Maybe you could collaborate with other developers to widen support of TF300TG model.
Thanks a lot.

Great thanks!
I have the tf300tl LTE and im stuck with the stock kernel and the poor I/O performance
Is it possible to implement the 3G changes you announced in Untermensch kernel for example,
my dream is to have a kernel with good I/O performance and working 3g!!
thanks!
Can you please share the source code for this? With no great devs around to do stuff for the TG, it's left to each one of us to dabble a bit and see what we can do
Thanks
Do you mind if I include this in my kernel installer for CleanROM Inheritance?

Million thanks for this kernel :good:. I installed it with CleanROM Inheritance 3.4.4 on my TF300L. It works really fine with 3G. I'm not convinced about LTE, but unfortunately I do not have an LTE subscription yet. According to SpeedTest it works fine at around 10Mbps, which is the bandwidth I pay for currently.
Do you think you can make OC available in this kernel?
Does this kernel work on last cm tf300t, using a tf300tg device?

I doubt it as it is a stock kernel.
Can I use this kernel with the the stock ROM? I didn't switch to any custom ROM yet.
Edit: I guess sbdags already answered my question

CleanROM 4.2.1 vs CleanROM 4.1.1

I'm on the last updated CleanROM 4.1.1 (3.4.6) using unters kernel and EVERYTHING just works flawlessly and smooth. I like to always flash the newest thing out and been debating about 4.2.1? Anyone else debating like me? I see there's really no alternative kernel support on the new CleanROM 4.0 but how does it overall compare to the latest update on CleanROM 4.1.1 (3.4.6)? Battery life? Speed? Functionality?

I'm still on the older bootloader too and running CROMI v3.3. I like to keep up to date on the newest software too but I've decided to hold off until they at least get an oc kernel and release a newer version of TWRP.
I'm very happy with v3.3. It runs flawlessly for me. I guess I'll just stick with it for the time being.

im loving the new cromi but dont use the cromi bootanimation as it messes things up, but everything is running great and smooth for me even with out an oc kernal

Yeah, I talked to Elesbb and he said his was running great without the OC Kernel too. Imagine what it's going to be like once a performance kernel is released. Wheweeee!

Agreed. Really smooth even without OC kernel
(OC kernel never worked for me anyways as it would make my tf300 freak out for some reason)
really happy with the move

[Q] 4.3 Kernel w/ Data2SD support?

Title kind of says it all, I have heard of folks in a few posts for 4.3 based roms mention just running a kernel with Data2SD built in. Bryce's kernel is the only 4.3 kernel i have found and it does not appear to have data2sd included....
4.3 runs pretty well without it but it would be nice to have.

That's kernel version 6 kind of supports 4.3 and has preinit support built in which means with a small script you can set the mount points for data2sd before android boots.
Pop over to his thread for info.

Thanks for the reply, as far as I know that will not work on 4.3: From that thread:

No this kernel is only for stock based roms, it will not work on CM 10.2 (currently there's no custom kernel for CM10.2).

I used it on CM10.2 as did that. The new version is 4.3 compatible as it says in the changelog. Although he didin't put it in the first post it is near the end of the thread. You also need to inject his modules into CM.
If you pop over to his dual boot thread he shows you how to do this as well
Awesome thanks for posting again! I will give this a try right away! I'd seriously contemplating going down the path of compiling my own....but would rather not
