[Q] Does ROMs affect Signal Strenght? - HTC Inspire 4G

Hi, I recently obtained a new HTC Inspire 4G and rooted it in order to unlock it and use another provider's SIM card. I've noticed that using this phone with the other company's SIM doesn't work very well for me, because given that I'm at a certain place with that company's stock phone i have complete signal bars and when I use the Inspire 4g i only have like 2 or don't have service at all, which sucks... I just wanted to know if anyone can tell me if the ROM or radio on the rooted phone somehow determines the signal strength of some other provider service. Can anyone help me here? I would really appreciate it. Thanks a lot in advance.

ROM doesn't play all that much into the signal strength directly, but indirectly each ROM will have a different RIL which has a radio that corresponds to it. (Before you go well how does that all work, please see the radio thread in the dev section). So if you're changing ROMs and keeping the same radio (since I can tell you already know but I'll just make sure...radios don't change when you flash a new rom) you may be pairing a radio to the wrong RIL.
From your last thread and I'm not sure why you created two threads for this but whatever, you need to allow time for everything to settle in at least a couple hours. You may also want to check your apn settings if you're using a different carrier outside of AT&T. It may take some time until you find the proper radio/ril combo that works best for you. You need to allow some time for testing. If this is annoying to you or you just can't do it, unroot your phone and leave it stock because you're gonna find that a lot of these things are trial and error.

Bars are NOT a representation of signal strength. If you arent having it displaying your snr and giving those numbers, bars are meaningless. Remember the att fix for the iphone 4? they changed the height of the bars to trick people into a fix.

They're not completely meaningless. Each bar consistently represents a range of strength, and I think they can be configured.

Right but without knowing what that is, its apples and oranges. But i agree with what you are saying. Would be nice to configure at the user end.

APNs are going to affect your signal strength also. Just try a different APN setting and see if that helps. I'm sure you can find some by searching.

Thanks to all of you for your responses. I've not been working on that since I've had a lot of work and college but now Im ready. Ive got the part where someone said that it wouldnt affect, but the radio does... OK, I paired the ROM with the recommendded radio and still no changes noticed. So, I guess I'll have to change the ROM all over again. Can anyone recommend me a good one? Thanks a lot.

what? I'm unsure of what you're telling me or the OP? IF you're saying flash RUU to get back to stock then yes, I agree. Gene has made a wonderful tool that will help you get back to stock. But in general, no ROM will change your radio, you mustdo it yourself.

An official HTC RUU.exe will install a radio.

Well it mostly depends on what rom your using, what radio your currently using and if you are happy with your data speeds....
Yes it is possible to brick your phone....but if you follow instructions and always make sure you md5 checksum matches up....most people dont have any problems.
Well I'm using the RCmix kingdom rom....and I would like to try another radio. But a couple posts said that flashing a radio didn't really do much for a phone...what should I look for when trying to pick a radio?

From what I've read...most rom developers usually have a specific radio they suggest to use with there rom.
And if not, it's usually safest to stick with the stock radio's. I've had the best luck with the most recent radio released by AT&T....26.06.06.30_M
Personally from my experience, I've had nothing but kinda meh luck with radios and data speed since I rooted my phone. I've gone from 2mbps download and 1.5mbps uploads to around 1mbps downloads and 100kbps uploads, at best. I've tried a handful of radios and roms both, and so far stock is showing me the best results...But that's just my experiences. Maybe I'm one of the unlucky ones.

Rerun the hack kit on the rom your using but when it get's to step 3, have the radio image you want to use in the folder of the hack kit and let it push that to the phone.
This will fix your wireless data speeds.

When you say rerun the hack kit, I take it you mean re-root the phone altogether or wipe and re-install the ROM? It's 4AM here right now so my mind is a little muddled and I wanna make sure I understood right lol.

Tried it, and still getting around 150kbps download and 70kbps upload.
Thanks for the help, but I think I'll just go back stock. No point in having a great device if I can't even use it on the web, or to listen to music without it stopping half-way through every song.

Just out of curiousity, what do the RIL even do?
For my problem, I've flashed the RIL, kernel, ROM, Radio, re-flashed the kit, kept the stock, flashed a dozen different radios with their RIL's and still...Nothing. Just stating my (bad) experience with Rooting, ROM's, and Radios. Kinda wish I could go back to how it was pre-rooting and get my 2mbps down/1.5mpbs up back, as well as having a stable connection back.
Your issue stems from the fact that your APN settings are fu*ked. Look up henrybravo's thread about apn settings in the dev section; it'll be on the 1st or 2nd page. If that doesn't clear your data speeds up, then post back here and I'll point you in the other direction. But, the APN trick worked great for me. I was *****ing about the exact same thing and everybody thought I was just too blazed or something because nobody paid attention until henrybravo figured out to change the access point names to the exact same entries as in the stock ROM. It works like a charm.

Talking about the MEdia.net and MMS settings that come with stock? I'm on stock now, and since rooting I've not been able to get my original stability and speed back. I dunno if the root kit I used screwed something up big-time or what, but I can't even listen to Pandora or Slacker anymore without having to unlock the phone screen, go into the app, wait a second, then it plays. Close screen. Rinse-repeat song by song. And it isn't like my phone is somewhere new; before rooting, for a few weeks before rooting, I'd listen to music for 8 hours every night or so there...After rooting, I can't.

Yes try my APN fix and it's quite possible you'll get your speeds back to stock levels. Link is in my sig.

[Q] Signal Indicator and Signal Not in Sync

I've been running Valhalla v1.3.2 since it was released (about 13 days). About 5 days ago I started having issues with reception. I tried different modems from the modem thread and that didn't work. So I tried reflashing the ROM and that also didn't work. I checked the check sums after downloading the ROM, so I know I got a good file.
As I mentioned, these issues are new in the last 5 days, reception was great a week ago.
What I've noticed in the last couple days are two things.
1. The signal indicator on the top of the phone doesn't match up with actual signal. In the one attached screenshot you can see it indicating 3 bars of service, but no carrier. The other screenshot shows 2 bars and no carrier. I've also been driving and had dropped calls while indicating 4 bars service. I work 30 miles from home, so this isn't an issue with a single tower.
2. The ROM has the signal indicators themed green, although, as you can see, sometimes when I'm having issues they go back to gray.
Any help would be greatly appreciated as I'm basically relying on wifi calling at this point.
Thank you,
Ryan
Maybe verify with T-Mobile that they're not having issues, also. We had a problem here for over a day where we had bars but couldn't place calls, calls dropped, etc, and it was occurring all over the city.
Not sure if it'll make a difference, but maybe make sure your SIM card is clean & snug, possibly even replace the SIM if necessary.
Good luck; I'm curious what the issue is.
The signal indicator going from grey to green is a Gingerbread feature, not a bug. It indicates if the signal is "locked on" or not. My friend has a Nexus S and it does the same thing.
It's difficult to say if your signal problem is the phone or something in your area. I get the same issue when I'm at work but I know for a fact it's because the tower is far and the building blocks a lot of signal for all phones regardless of carrier. It sounds like a true weak signal though, could be caused by the tower having issues or some interference.

Thank you for the suggestion, but I don't think the green/gray is working as designed. With the Valhalla rom the OP specifically mentioned in one version he'd forgotten to theme the signal indicator. Likewise, sometimes when I can make calls it's green, sometimes it's gray, so it doesn't seem to be specific to signal status.
I called t-mobile customer care yesterday and they told me to go to the store and get an new SIM card as mine was outdated. I did that today and am still having the same issues. I'm thinking of ODINing back to stock KD1 to see how things go.
Thoughts?

I was really hoping the SIM card would work out for you. Going back to KD1 isn't a bad test to see if the problem goes away. Keep me posted, I'm curious if it makes a difference. If so, maybe shoot for KG4 as it was the first GB ROM to come with the boot loaders & see if the phone still acts normal.
I get the same grey / white bars when the phone first boots, and occasionally during normal operation. It usually lasts for 5 to 10 seconds and doesn't seem to affect signal quality at all.
Green means its synced with Google. Grey means its not.

I experienced similar issues, for me when the bars were gray I had no data. Facebook wouldn't connect and my widgets weren't able to update. I was still texting and receiving MMS fine. I hardly make calls so not certain if those were ever effected. I still get this happening to me maybe once a day but I simply throw on Airplane mode then turn it right off and my data is once again flowing.
I called TMobile again and they asked me to uninstall all my apps while I was on the phone with them to make sure nothing there was interfering. I didn't have time to do that at the moment, so I told them I'd call back. In the interest of getting everything bone stock, I figured I'd ODIN the stock KD1. However, when I look at the bible thread all I can find is a deodexed KD1 with root. I can't seem to find the true stock KD1 rom. Where can I get that?
Thanks again,
Ryan

You basically set the preset to SGH-T959V, scroll back up to the Input section, and click send. It downloads the stock ROM.

edit: the SGH-T959 is listed as being supported on that thread, but not the SGH-T959V .
just go to samfirmware.com and download the stock kd1 file, you'll have to sign up so you can download it but its free

[Q] Got GSIII and reception is terrible

It's easily 50% worse than my last phone (palm pre 3) and I've never had issues at my home with anyone's verizon phone.
I did flash LK1 RPM and Radio from this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2007414
I'm not sure if that has any bearing on it and am also not sure if it was like that before. I did it all when I was in town.
Is there another radio I can flash and see if it's better? Or does the GSIII just have garbage reception on the outskirts?

I've tried the miui 4.1

and the mean jellybean one I posted above.
To be honest when I first flashed any ROM on to my GS3 my reception was terrible. Every ROM that I used was the same, I also tried every radio available.
My only solution was just to go back to stock which I did now this Stock ICS has me at 4-5 bars everywhere I go.
My last CM ROM had me at 0-1 bar in the same places.
I hope this helps.
Check to see if you have the updated prl version 15154. Do this by going to settings, about phone, status. I think that is an updated list of the towers and that could be your problem. If its not the updated version just shut phone off take out SIM card for 2 min and then just start it up and it should automatically update. I read this somewhere in another post and just figured i'd pass it on. Hope it helps.

Unfortunately I'm already on this PRL
Going to try some ICS roms I guess.
I have tried each radio as they have come out with mixed reviews. Some are better than others for me but YMMV. I have found the latest VRLK1 is what works best for me. I came from the Thunderbolt, and I really miss the reception I had with that phone; however, that is the ONLY thing I miss about it. I am currently running CleanRom v5.0 and VRLK1. I definitely get the best reception, and can maintain 4G at work while the other radios would drop to 3g or 1x. I only hope it continues to improve, but I don't think it will ever be as good as I had with the Thunderbolt. Good Luck.
Did you try all the radios, even the ICS ones.

Mark as solved!
I tried every radio I agree the newest seemed to work best but still was ridiculous. Barely any service even though I had two bars at times. Not enough for a single call and had to be by a window to get spotty text service.
Traded for a lumia 822. Works perfect.
This is funny. Coming from the nexus this phone has way more signal and better reception. Instant switching from 3g to 4g and to wifi. Ive tried every radio and they all work very well. Tried on my nexus and all were horrible. Just my .02 cents but this phone rocks.

As others have said try out all of the older radios and use whichever one works best for you. Unfortunately, this phone is not particularly known for having a strong radio (and no software update is ever going to really fix that).
If you are really on a fringe area of service, this might not be the best phone for you. In my experience, Motorola phones have always had the best radios in the industry, and are the most reliable in fringe service areas.

Bars can be deceptive and can be manipulated. Are your speeds lower or your call quality worse?
Some carriers (*cough* AT&T *cough*) change the settings your signal looks stronger than it really is. Using a rom on a non-AT&T base will remove these fake bars and give you a more realistic signal reading.

If you are on the 1.14 hboot, you can't flash radios.
It says this clearly in the radio thread that iElvis told you to read. If you are on the 1.14 hboot, then you neglected this clear warning and need to slow down and research before messing with your phone anymore. Messing with the radio is one of the few ways to actually brick your phone.

Issues with mobile data - Wont stay on LTE - Switches constantly.

Hello! Thanks for taking time to help me out!
Here is what is happening; I just recently updated my phone to Marshmallow and am running XtraSmooth with EXKernel. I live in China and had to follow the tutorial to change one of my bands to get LTE here. Of course everything was working fine before I updated to M6.
I can go into the 'Testing' Menu (*#*#4636#*#*) and switch to LTE only and LTE works great, however I then can not receive or send calls or text messages. When I do switch to LTE Only the LTE connection is usually much stronger than when not on LTE. For now I leave it on LTE/GSM (auto).
When I wake up my phone it is usually connected to 3g or edge, after a while it connects to H but then jumps back to 3g, and never seems to connect to LTE.
Is there a new feature I am not aware of that is causing this issue that I could turn off?
Thanks Again,
Chris

Thanks for your reply! I really appreciate your help!
This is the thread I got the hack/mod from for the LTE bands. I did re-perform the hack to verify it is still functioning. A few users in that thread reported it working with Marshmallow.
I was just out and about and I did notice LTE being used occasionally, sometime working sometimes not -- Oddly enough H seemed to not work at all giving DNS errors in chrome.
I am about to just restore my phone back to Lollipop with the twrp image I have... But I really do like to stay update to date with the latest OS. I also wanted to try a Chinese ROM like MIUI but they are still stuck on kitkat for the N5 and I don't want to go that far back... If the phone is still performing poorly and no one knows what is going on in a day or two I may revert back just to save myself the headache! I may also try a different ROM like Chroma to see if it helps.
If anyone else has ideas please let me know! Thank you!

Last thought it make sure you wiped everything in TWRP before flashing the ROM and make sure the modem you're using is marshmallow compatible. if you performed the steps on modem that isn't compatible, that could have caused your issues. I hope this is helpful to you. and feel free to hit the like :silly::good:

I don't know a lot about phones... When you say modem when referring to phones do you mean radio? I flashed the stock M6 factory Google Image by running the flash-all.bat. After that I flashed the ROM. Should doing this have taken care of that
Should I attempt to flash some other things? If so can you point me in the right direction.
Also it seems to be working a little better, steadily connected to LTE, however I get many many DNS errors; again I live in China. I am going to try to set custom DNS that I know works well here, when I get home from school. Is there a good app for this?

first, when you see modem and radio, those are the same file. and yes you flashed it correctly using the "flash-all.bat." :good: so you have the latest modem for the nexus 5. The DNS errors could mean many things. DNS depends on carrier, proxys they may be using, phone settings, etc. also for next time before you flash any files, read the stickies and rules. If not people may get mad at you & call you names if you ask question that already have answers inside of the rules and stickies

focus on fixing the LTE problem first completely than deal with the DNS so you don't confuse the problems.

I think the LTE issue has mostly resolved itself. My house must be in a very poorly covered area and so I gets disconnected.
The big thing now is dns issues... Is there a good way to change it or do tests for issues?
Thanks

I'm sorry, this must seem crazy. So when I am connected to WiFi I can surf the internet just fine (as well as we can here) when on 3G or H data connection it works. But when I'm on LTE I cannot browse. Chrome gives a DNS_PROBE_FINISHED_NXDOMAIN error (for websites like bing.com and baidu.com [like chinese google]).

hmmm interesting. have you tried google searching the issue? someone else who has your phone and carrier may have had the issue, nexus 5 is pretty common.
also what carrier do you have?

I have a little, and I really cant find anything. It seems I may not be getting an IP at all. I d/l a DNS Switcher app and it has a button to show current network settings and ip displays as 0.0.0.0 dns as 0.0.0.0
I may have to modify my searches.

Honestly if those settings are coming up using the cell network, idk. Be certain your APN settings are correct since that could effect it. Lastly if that didn't happen with out the custom radio than you may be having some issues with the mod. go back to the thread and make sure you did everything like they said. also try using a different browser, I heard something about google and China not being good with each other

I really appreciate you sticking around and helping me out! I am at school or work all day so I only have short evenings to trouble shoot. So here is what I experienced today;
I can now steadily connect to LTE (even in areas I was having trouble with before). Sometimes, when I connect to wifi then disconnect and therefore reconnect to LTE it doesn't handle the switch-over very well and gives issues with the connection (the NXDOMAIN errors or, more rarely, no internet connection at all). I downloaded LTE Discovery which showed me I am connected on band 3 which means the 'hack' successfully applied. I also asked over on their post and they said It will stay across a factory update. To fix the connection errors I can usually restart my phone or play with the APNs (switch back and forth), merely turning data off then back on does not fix the issue.
My next idea is to switch ROMs then downgrade. but oddly enough, right now, no matter what I do it works... This is nuts, haha.

No problem, and try different modems first, that could clear up the issue. than try some different ROMs and going back to stock like you said.. Also you never mentioned what you doing when you get those DNS related errors. don't forget to hit thanks man, def appreciated.
also, be sure no one else in your area, with your service provider is having the same issue.
