Well it mostly depends on what rom your using, what radio your currently using and if you are happy with your data speeds....
Yes it is possible to brick your phone....but if you follow instructions and always make sure you md5 checksum matches up....most people dont have any problems.
Well I'm using the RCmix kingdom rom....and I would like to try another radio. But a couple posts said that flashing a radio didn't really do much for a phone...what should I look for when trying to pick a radio?

From what I've read...most rom developers usually have a specific radio they suggest to use with there rom.
And if not, it's usually safest to stick with the stock radio's. I've had the best luck with the most recent radio released by AT&T....26.06.06.30_M
Personally from my experience, I've had nothing but kinda meh luck with radios and data speed since I rooted my phone. I've gone from 2mbps download and 1.5mbps uploads to around 1mbps downloads and 100kbps uploads, at best. I've tried a handful of radios and roms both, and so far stock is showing me the best results...But that's just my experiences. Maybe I'm one of the unlucky ones.

Rerun the hack kit on the rom your using but when it get's to step 3, have the radio image you want to use in the folder of the hack kit and let it push that to the phone.
This will fix your wireless data speeds.

When you say rerun the hack kit, I take it you mean re-root the phone altogether or wipe and re-install the ROM? It's 4AM here right now so my mind is a little muddled and I wanna make sure I understood right lol.

Tried it, and still getting around 150kbps download and 70kbps upload.
Thanks for the help, but I think I'll just go back stock. No point in having a great device if I can't even use it on the web, or to listen to music without it stopping half-way through every song.
make sure to flash the corresponding RIL with the radio

Just out of curiousity, what do the RIL even do?
For my problem, I've flashed the RIL, kernel, ROM, Radio, re-flashed the kit, kept the stock, flashed a dozen different radios with their RIL's and still...Nothing. Just stating my (bad) experience with Rooting, ROM's, and Radios. Kinda wish I could go back to how it was pre-rooting and get my 2mbps down/1.5mpbs up back, as well as having a stable connection back.
Your issue stems from the fact that your APN settings are fu*ked. Look up henrybravo's thread about apn settings in the dev section; it'll be on the 1st or 2nd page. If that doesn't clear your data speeds up, then post back here and I'll point you in the other direction. But, the APN trick worked great for me. I was *****ing about the exact same thing and everybody thought I was just too blazed or something because nobody paid attention until henrybravo figured out to change the access point names to the exact same entries as in the stock ROM. It works like a charm.

Talking about the MEdia.net and MMS settings that come with stock? I'm on stock now, and since rooting I've not been able to get my original stability and speed back. I dunno if the root kit I used screwed something up big-time or what, but I can't even listen to Pandora or Slacker anymore without having to unlock the phone screen, go into the app, wait a second, then it plays. Close screen. Rinse-repeat song by song. And it isn't like my phone is somewhere new; before rooting, for a few weeks before rooting, I'd listen to music for 8 hours every night or so there...After rooting, I can't.

I traded in my first Inspire for a replacement after the GPS started working less reliably after a couple weeks.
Now, a couple weeks into owning this one, I am (frustratingly) experiencing weird problems again.
Yesterday I tried using the GPS to navigate to a club in Baltimore... On the way down, I never got a solid gps lock in navigation. And, oddly enough, on the way back home, the lock was rock solid all the way.
I'm beginning to wonder if this is a defect with the Inspire itself, even though I haven't heard of many people having the same problems. The only "weird" thing I do with my GPS is use c:geo, a geocaching application... I'm wondering if this somehow tampers with GPS settings and starts to affect the gps tracking itself?
I do not use a case. I have not rooted or flashed the phone (nor did I on the previous model).. I really can't think about much else that I might be doing that coudl be affecting the gps.
Anyone have any ideas?

Go into your settings, location and then uncheck "use wireless networks". Try that and see how it works.
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA Premium App
I will try this later, but I hesitate to say that'd be the problem, when GPS test was only pulling 3-4 satellites earlier today. (under normal conditions it will get twice that easily after a few seconds).
I feel like if this hardware problem was this widespread (that an entire generation of GPS' started going bad on the inspires) more people would be talking about it... And yet I see very little discussion of this happening. Are people just not using their GPS' that much? lol
In my ecperience not all Roms have the greatest GPS for whatever reason.

Intermittent quality all the way home from work, even with "use wireless networks" turned off. By the end of the trip it could no longer hold a lock.
So frustrating. I would return this one, but for what? Another couple weeks and I'll be having the same problems.
Welp, rooted and flashed last night to Stock ROM Optimized, flashed LeeDroid 2.2.2. Kernel, applied this fix http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=997647, and I still couldn't get a strong lock on the way to work today.
This is baffling to me. I guess I just won't be using the Inspire's GPS a whole lot, which is a shame, because it's a perfect phone otherwise.

I have this exact same setup on my phone, same Rom, same kernel, and my gps didnt work. I reflashed the stock radio and now i get a lock in under 3 seconds. Give that a try.
Almost forgot I used THIS method to flash the radio, if that matters...
*BE VERY CAREFUL WITH THIS PROCESS YOU CAN BRICK YOUR PHONE WITH A CORRUPT RADIO.IMG*
To flash a radio using hboot with radio S-OFF you can simply take the zip file PD98IMG.zip from the hack kit (Thanks ATTN1) and remove the radio.img file from it using winrar or 7zip, and put a new radio.img from elsewhere in the zip named radio.img and using store (NO) compression. Make sure it is named exactly PD98IMG.zip and put it on the root of your sdcard. Reboot your phone into hboot and the new radio will prompt you to load. Press volume up on the phone and it will load automatically and ask you to press power to reboot.

Since your flashing the stock radio no need to take any radio.img file out or put a new one in, just simply flash the PD98IMG.zip in hboot

I ran alot of other roms, and noone of them were working for me, never got around to trying anything to fix it until i came across someone who reflashed the radio and it worked using the Stock Optomized rom in the thread, so figured id give it a try low and behold it worked for me as well.
Re-flashed the radio last night, don't think it made much of a difference.
Navigation to work today was spotty... Hanging at spots, and never getting a very solid lock (the circle around the little blue arrow would remain probably 20-30 meters large or more). When viewing GPS status I'll usually be anywhere from 4-8 satellites.
I dunno... maybe I'm expecting too much? It has been cloudy/rainy here the past few days, and maybe that's just really affecting it.
I just know that when I first got this phone (and the last one) I'd have strong locks very quickly that would stay strong for the majority of the trip... And it never seemed very weather dependant. *shrugs*
Be happy you get a GPS lock lol, i owned the Captivate for about 5 months and got 1 lock the entire time mo matter what fixes i tried, and the 1 lock was the day i got it.

Yeah, I guess inconsistently functional is better than nothing. I just don't get why I'm having these problems, when most Inspire owners seem to have perfect GPS still.
I might try trading in for ONE MORE model, just to see what happens... HTC's warranty should cover me for 9 months, right?

Your guarantee from AT&T itself is 30 days exchange for anything policy regardless. Trade it in for a different phone or another Inspire.
Just make sure you follow the back to stock flashing instructions in development thread before you take it in just in case they want to be assholes about you having alternate software running.
You should try GPS Status from the market.
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.eclipsim.gpsstatus2&feature=search_result
It downloads new AGPS info like once a day if you want it to and has quickened up my fixes a whole bunch. I would try D/L'ing the app, clearing the exsisting AGPS data through the app, and D/L'ing the data new.
Faster fix from the market works awesome to and always fixs my gps after a new rom install .

Hey wonderful community!
I am having some serious problems with my GPS. Everything was good until I flashed Android Revolution 3.2 from Android Revo 1.6. Luckily I had a backup so I flashed back to that through clockwork and all was well for a while. Then I got curious about LeeDroid so I flashed that and seemed good but the other night, after confirming a GPS lock the first night I flashed it, couldn't get a signal. I haven't flashed anything since my GPS was working but I still thought it had to be software related. So I flashed my backup expecting it to work just like it did before, but I got nothing. I get AGPS but no actual sats. Even if I leave GPS test open for an hour it never even sees even one satelite, let alone using any. This is on the same rom, same kernel, **** the same backup. So I flashed a few roms, and even did a full factory reset and have had no luck. I searched a couple threads looking for solutions but everything I have tried has not helped at all. Just so you know what I have tried that hasn't worked is as follows: the GPS.zip file thread extracted and pasted into system/xx/xx/hw, reinstalling locations, clearing map data, and installing faster fix.
I know this was a lot to read but I try to help anyone as much as I can and would really appreciate some help on this. LETS PAY IT FORWARD PEOPLE LOL.
Thanks in Advance.
EDIT: Ok so still don't know what the culprit was but with a lot of help from Kirk I redid step 5 from the Hack Kit, which flashes the stock radio, and WOOT WOOT! GPS back to it's mean self.
You need to re-flash the radio. You can flash it using HBOOT.
Try stock rooted and faster fix from the market.

Same issue as laxwillsch...
I am running 3.3 as of 2 hours ago - only issue was GPS. Performance is phenomenal on 3.3. I ran through your instructions. In step 6, mine quickly flashed up the screen that says it couldn't find any files to update, then returned to the HBOOT screen. There was nothing apparently for me to do, so I simply rebooted the device.
Guess what? GPS now works. I am certain the update didn't happen but something did! When I launched Google Maps, I immediately saw the satellite icon. I haven't seen that in awhile... Not waiting on Google Maps, I launched Compass (I like that app) and it locked 7 satellites in a fraction of a second. I returned to Google Maps and it works flawlessly.
My Radio version is 12.39.60.19U_26.06.04.06_M.
My speed test performance floats between 3.8 - 2.1 Mbps down and 1656 - 1200 Mbps up...
Thanks again!

Ok did it and it didnt find a radio to flash. I think this is because it is supposed to be renamed to PD98IMG.zip but I could be wrong. I will try that but I don't know if this will help because I actually already get the flashing GPS indicator it just fails to see any sats. Like absolutely none. Even if I keep GPS test up for an hour. It doesn't do anything. I dont understand this because I don't see anyone with the same problem. I think I am just going to exchange it tomorrow because I have a feeling something happened hardware wise because I didn't even flash anything to make this happen. The GPS worked one day and the next it didnt. And I didnt change anything, no themes, no roms, no nothing.

You need to rename the file as stated in my previous reply. Try that before you give up.
If you decide to exchange the phone, make sure you are within the 30 days when you bought it, and also s-off needs to be s-on and then install the stock ROM that came with the phone. Otherwise they will see you tinkered with the phone and altering your phone like that voids the warranty.
EDIT: Are you outside when you are looking for a GPS signal? The phone needs to be outdoors to grab a GPS signal. From what you said about leaving it on for an hour to look for GPS signal, sounds like you are indoors cause I wouldn't wanna stay outside for an hour in cold weather just to look for a GPS signal.

I tried it the way you posted with no avail. Then I just renamed it PD98IMG.zip and it updated this time but still no change. And yes I have been outside and on my deck, both places where I got perfect GPS signal a couple days ago. I really think it is something weird, because I have done everything I could think of software related with no change. I have probably flashed 5-6 roms and it is the same with all of them. I got excited when you suggested the radio but after it not changing anything I got to thinking that I never flashed a radio, I don't even have ENG-S-OFF so it wouldnt really make sense that it is radio related. I am open to more suggestions but I have tried everything I have learned about android in the last year with no avail. My next step is flashing the stock RUU and seeing if that fixes it and if not just taking it back to radio shack. I am over my 30 days but they said they can replace after 30 if the device is defective and I have a screen issue where if I press lightly on the search button it makes a clicking noise and plurs the corner of the LCD. Plus I am getting AGPS but literally my actual GPS is like totally borked. Not seeing any satelites at all, before even inside I would see like 7-9. Something is seriously wrong and I don't even know where to start.

That would be my next suggestion, to flash the stock untouched ROM. Hopefully that makes it work and then you can go from there. Either way, you need to install the stock ROM before you return it.
Also, did the phone show the update completed successfully or did it give an error?

A new thread just popped up in the Inspire 4G General section with someone that has the same problem you had.
I'm completely lost. I have tried everything I have found on the forums and nothing had restored my GPS. I've flashed fixes, flashed new radios, new roms, formatted everything and started over with a brand new rom install. Can somebody please help me.

Have you tried using Hboot to flash the radio? Follow the instructions on post 5 in this thread. Might work for you.
I'm not skyraider Zeus preview and have no no issues till last night. Now all of a sudden since last night I have not been able to get 1x, 3g anything and signal drops. Have multiple lines on verizon and the rest of the phones are fine. Really don't want to change roms but will if I have to.
Have you tried to just reload the rom on top of what you have now?
Have you tried to restore a backup?

Okay I just restored a backup of liquid gingersense and same problem... Starting to get a bit scared.
Alright flashed the brand new GB radio from "someplace." Still have same problem. Sometimes I have full bars but no 3g and can't get calls tried to test and calls don't go through so my phone is kinda pointless... I'm really panicking I need this thing...
When you installed the new radio did you also install the LTE radio?

Honestly no clue how would I be able to tell? I've installed nearly every radio and never has two separate radio files.

There are not two separate radios to install. If you downloaded MR3, it will work if you're on a GB Rom. If you're on a froyo Rom then you need a froyo radio.
Also check to make sure your battery door is completely attached. Your antennas are in the door and it must be attached.

I was running the OTA MR2 radio since release never had any problems then last night out of nowhere it just happened. Have been scrambling ever since.

Went back to MR2 radio now since I know it's not a radio issue. Battery door is completely sealed. Checked to see if the metal was bent in any way and it's not.
EDIT: Every time I reboot it gains bars back for a bit but no 3g. I've tried calling during this period to no avail. Then it looses bars with just an x over them. The one thing I am thinking is there any possibility that the sim just died...
Did you check your mobile network settings? Are you on LTE only mode possibly?
As goofy as it sounds, when I first rooted my TB awhile back I completely lost signal then was able to pick up 1x and that was it. I did a factory reset on the device (as instructed by VZW), and it actually worked. Nothing else had been done to the device besides a root, no one else could figure out what exactly went wrong, but the wipe restored it back to "factory" root and it worked perfectly.

No LTE/CDMA. I have done like 30 factory resets lol. Called Verizon to make sure there was no outage. I'm getting a new device (Not refurbished shockingly) over-nighted. The big bummer is having to reroot and such, but hey the guy was nice about it and everthing so no complaints. I can live without it for one day. Thanks for all your help guys!
Just want to know if its just me or other people also. Lately even when I have service I don't actually have service..... Internet won't work/don't get texts I have to restart my phone to get it working again. Just want to know if it my phone or the service. Im running on [ROM-Leak][ODIN] Gingerbread 2.3.4 T959VUVKG4.
I had a similar issue coupke if weeks ago. Lasted about a day here. do you have the problem when using wifi too?
Sent from my SGH-T959V using XDA App
No I have no issues with wifi.. This has been going on for about 3 days now... it pissing me off....
You could try flashing another modem and see if it gives you better results. It might just be that KG4 isn't good for your area.
um go To Wirless & networks then go to Mobile Networks Network operators and hit search now.. and when tmobile comes up click on it... try that see if it works
i don't know if this is considered a service issue or not though, but i did have a couple of calls that did not go through and i'm on Valhalla 1.3.2.
Anyone else you know in your area on T-Mobile? If so are they having an issue? If not, definitely turn off the phone, reseat the SIM (if it's old, go get a new one), then see if it's better. If not, try what bkoon said. Let us know how it goes.

I'm still new to this so I don't know how to flash a modem/what exactly a modem is but I will look it up and see.
Also I didn't say it in the OP but this happens randomly. I sometimes go for almost the whole day without it doing this and sometimes it happens 10 mins after I turn on my phone.

If she's having a similar issue on a totally different phone it would seem to be a T-Mobile issue. Does it only happen in a certain area (your house, places you go/hang out, etc.) or all over the city?

Ah, I misunderstood. I thought you meant she has the same issue. What about doing a factory data reset & also reseating the SIM? Barring that, maybe flash a new ROM onto it to see if that helps. As bkoon alluded to, some modems (the part that talks to T-Mobile as well as wifi) work better in some areas than in others. Flashing a different ROM via ODIN would give you a different modem.
If you just want to flash the modem itself via ODIN, take a look in the developer forum (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1192436). You open ODIN, put the modem file in the "PHONE" location, and hit start.
If you need help, let me know & I'll help in any way I can.

I have to admit I'm CWM stupid Iv'e only ever flashed dsexton's Adrenaline Shot from CWM. I've never flashed a new ROM that way. I imagine it's the same as flashing any other ZIP, though. Tell me what steps you followed & where you're stuck & I'll do my best to help.
I'm more of an ODIN guy, but that's because I'm fairly new to this too.

Well the thing is I have full bars and even says 4G but it acts like I have no service(also this only started recently and I used to never have problems). It hasn't happened since I installed a new ROM yet but I have only had the ROM for about 5 hours. I am going to try out modems also to see if I can get better reception in some areas, but I have never changed the modem before so we will see how it all goes.
Hello everyone. Been on here a while haven't really posted much. Have a shift 4G used to have new update prior to being able to root that so I downverted fully rooted and ran Cryo 7 for a while. Switched to MikShifted-Gv2.1. I love it! It's great. A buddy of mine was looking at my phone the other day and noticed that my phone wasn't using 3G because it wasn't saying 3G when I was at work (state buildings don't let you use their wifi It just has the 1X in the status bar... Just out of curiosity is he right? Am I really just running 2G? Where the heck did my 3G go if it is true?? Am I missing something? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
1x would be 2g, ev or 3g would be the 3g. Don't know why it would turn off, usually its data or no data. Check your setting to make sure its not disabled. Also check apps like tasker or juice defender if installed or anything similar, They can also control 2g/3g.

There probably isn't anything wrong. All phones switch in and out of signal types, 1x , 3G , etc. MikShifted G, and Supreme Sense are enabled to show you all the different types of signals so that's what your seeing. Most phones do not actually show you when you switch out of 3G. They want you to think your always on 3G at the very least.

What he said. Before I rooted I never saw anything lower than 3g. Since running custom ROMs I now know what I'm actually getting for a connection. Not sure why carriers decide not to give us an accurate portrayal. Oh well.

Thank you guys for the quick responses. So even though my phone ALWAYS says 1X unless I'm in either a 4G area with 4G turned on at home or on WiFi at home I won't exactly know if I'm in 3G or not? My wife has an Optimus S and she is in 3G at our house sitting right next to me. When we go out he phone is so much faster than mine looking online at things cause it says she's in 3G. I was looking through my phone at the Mik Tweeks and there is a place for me to change connection settings (EVDO etc.) Is this the place I need to see if there is a change? I just find it weird that no matter when I look it's always in 1X...

I checked and don't see anything about turning 3G on or off. And I don't have a task or juice defender or anything of that kind (learned my lesson) and nothing. I'm getting kinda frustrated. Would getting a new rom fix problem. I just want to make sure I'm getting my monies worth. We don't have 4G at my house yet but it's up the street by a Jack n' the box so I wanna at least be able to get my 3G when I want....

Yes, I've updated everything that I'm able to update on the phone (minus the software update. I think cause I'm rooted) And no dice. I've been fiddling around with it and was looking and it says 1XRTT... What does that mean?
So you don't 3G reception anywhere? Did you Update the Radios?

That's what I'm not sure about. I don't know if I get 3G or not. my status bar when not in either WiFi mode or 4G mode doesn't say 3G or EVDO or anything other than 1X. When I'm in 4G it says 4G when I'm in WiFi I see the WiFi symbol. When not in either of the two it says 1X... And yes, I've updated my radios. I check every 2 or so weeks to see if there is an update. Updated the radio yesterday.
If you've checked in several areas and never get 3G. What I would do is re-wipe, and re-flash. If it still doesn't work correctly try flashing a different Rom to see if it works correctly.
Okay so I tried to update the PRL and wiped my phone and tried to use the ROM again, still to no avail. I'm going to try newSense ROM hoping that it will help. I have a question though:
I cleared my cache and Dalvik cache. Is there something else I'm missing? I Thought I wiped my phone back to stock (assuming that meant getting rid of the ROM), but the ROM remained on my phone. Did I miss a step or was to supposed to happen?

Before you Flash a Rom, it's best IMO to do a FULL Wipe. There is a guide linked in my Sig. Read and follow the guide, and you should be all good. Also, if you did not do a FULL Wipe before Flashing MikShifted G that could be what's causing your issues. What do you mean by taking it back to stock BTW? Like Factory Stock? Or something else?

I'm curious as to if I can go back to the stock rom and remain rooted then try it all over again (as far as flashing ROM again.)
Then main thing I'm trying to fix is my 3G. I would love to have it again or at least know when I am. My wife's phone is far less superior than the Shift but when we are out and about her 3G works and kicks the pants off of my 1X any time of the day.
So... wiped EVERYTHING x3 as instructed, flashed new ROM (newSENSE) flashed just fine. Updated radio to the 1.8XXX, that worked just fine as well... STILL don't have a 3G signal, still says 1X.... Ahhh I'm getting frustrated!!! What do you guys think?

At this point I would RUU back to 2.2. Start the whole Rooting process over. RUU'ing should correct most any issue you may be having. It doesn't solve everything, but it will give you a better idea of what's going on. So RUU back to 2.2. Check the signal. Then Re-root, and check the signal. If all is still good flash a Rom, and check the signal.

Okay, I'm ready to give in and restore back to 2.2 I can't find a valid link. I had the zip file once, but no longer do. Can anyone help?
So I used the RUU and went back to stock, re rooted my phone (3 times in one night) and everytime I would root it, the 3G sign would remain, but as soon as I flashed ANY ROM on it it always went back to the 1X. Each time I rooted I used a different ROM so I give up. I'm just going to have to leave it as it is. I don't know what else to do
Thanks for all everyone's help trying to trouble shoot this. If anyone has had this problem and found a way to fix it, please let me know. Thanks XDA
Did you try a Stock Rooted Rom? Like the latest Rom, just Rooted. I believe Sparksco has one.
