I've been running Valhalla v1.3.2 since it was released (about 13 days). About 5 days ago I started having issues with reception. I tried different modems from the modem thread and that didn't work. So I tried reflashing the ROM and that also didn't work. I checked the check sums after downloading the ROM, so I know I got a good file.
As I mentioned, these issues are new in the last 5 days, reception was great a week ago.
What I've noticed in the last couple days are two things.
1. The signal indicator on the top of the phone doesn't match up with actual signal. In the one attached screenshot you can see it indicating 3 bars of service, but no carrier. The other screenshot shows 2 bars and no carrier. I've also been driving and had dropped calls while indicating 4 bars service. I work 30 miles from home, so this isn't an issue with a single tower.
2. The ROM has the signal indicators themed green, although, as you can see, sometimes when I'm having issues they go back to gray.
Any help would be greatly appreciated as I'm basically relying on wifi calling at this point.
Thank you,
Ryan
Maybe verify with T-Mobile that they're not having issues, also. We had a problem here for over a day where we had bars but couldn't place calls, calls dropped, etc, and it was occurring all over the city.
Not sure if it'll make a difference, but maybe make sure your SIM card is clean & snug, possibly even replace the SIM if necessary.
Good luck; I'm curious what the issue is.
The signal indicator going from grey to green is a Gingerbread feature, not a bug. It indicates if the signal is "locked on" or not. My friend has a Nexus S and it does the same thing.
It's difficult to say if your signal problem is the phone or something in your area. I get the same issue when I'm at work but I know for a fact it's because the tower is far and the building blocks a lot of signal for all phones regardless of carrier. It sounds like a true weak signal though, could be caused by the tower having issues or some interference.

Thank you for the suggestion, but I don't think the green/gray is working as designed. With the Valhalla rom the OP specifically mentioned in one version he'd forgotten to theme the signal indicator. Likewise, sometimes when I can make calls it's green, sometimes it's gray, so it doesn't seem to be specific to signal status.
I called t-mobile customer care yesterday and they told me to go to the store and get an new SIM card as mine was outdated. I did that today and am still having the same issues. I'm thinking of ODINing back to stock KD1 to see how things go.
Thoughts?

I was really hoping the SIM card would work out for you. Going back to KD1 isn't a bad test to see if the problem goes away. Keep me posted, I'm curious if it makes a difference. If so, maybe shoot for KG4 as it was the first GB ROM to come with the boot loaders & see if the phone still acts normal.
I get the same grey / white bars when the phone first boots, and occasionally during normal operation. It usually lasts for 5 to 10 seconds and doesn't seem to affect signal quality at all.
Green means its synced with Google. Grey means its not.

I experienced similar issues, for me when the bars were gray I had no data. Facebook wouldn't connect and my widgets weren't able to update. I was still texting and receiving MMS fine. I hardly make calls so not certain if those were ever effected. I still get this happening to me maybe once a day but I simply throw on Airplane mode then turn it right off and my data is once again flowing.
I called TMobile again and they asked me to uninstall all my apps while I was on the phone with them to make sure nothing there was interfering. I didn't have time to do that at the moment, so I told them I'd call back. In the interest of getting everything bone stock, I figured I'd ODIN the stock KD1. However, when I look at the bible thread all I can find is a deodexed KD1 with root. I can't seem to find the true stock KD1 rom. Where can I get that?
Thanks again,
Ryan

I did a bit of searching and LuffarJoh posted this link:

You basically set the preset to SGH-T959V, scroll back up to the Input section, and click send. It downloads the stock ROM.
Good luck!

I downloaded that application but received the message "No firmware info retrieved for given data." I tried searching again and didn't find anything.
Anyone else have a link?
edit: the SGH-T959 is listed as being supported on that thread, but not the SGH-T959V .
just go to samfirmware.com and download the stock kd1 file, you'll have to sign up so you can download it but its free
After a few more go arounds, the decision is that my phone is dead. So I'm getting a G2x in it's place.
I'll miss the SGS4g community here. Valhalla was great as was Black Ice and ICBINB.

Hello, I'm on my third Mesmerize from UScellular. It is a very buggy phone. The most unreliable phone I've ever owned. The alarm app fails often, the email app usually has to be force closed and reopened to check for new email. It obviously misses calls often, and even can't send texts, and misses some some texts as well. I hate the phone. I got the new EE19 radio update last tuesday and Friday it missed a call, and Saturday it missed two calls back to back, and couldn't send a text message for about 10 minutes . I took it back to the store, and was very upset. I thought they would give me a different phone all together... hopefully something that works. But no, they are doing a warranty replacement .
Should I sell the phone, and get better brand? If I learn how to flash ROM's and change the rom and kernel will it be more reliable? Will I still have the missed call issue with the EE19 radio and a custom ROM, or would I need to try a new radio as well? Any thoughts, tips, advice, pointers would be greatly welcomed!!!

I wonder if part of it is a reception issue. If you've gone through three phones, and each time you're having not just missed calls but text problems also, that suggests to me it's not getting the kind of signal it needs, at least for the phone network portion of it.
That said, I think it's entirely worth asking: have you done ANYTHING at all to customize it? Rooted it, loaded a custom ROM, recovery, kernel, radio, anything? Has your e-mail and alarm app broken that same way on all three phones? If you're having these problems right out of the box with ZERO customization on your part, then it's possible you've just been monumentally unlucky with which particular phones you've gotten; they say each specific unit can function differently compared to another as far as performance benchmarks and which ROMs work and which don't.
I question if a custom ROM would solve your problem, or just introduce more. I suspect it's possible either way in my opinion. You could try them with the understanding they may not do a thing for you---or may make the phone perform even worse.
I personally haven't had a problem with mine. I happen to like the phone, especially with Odin/Heimdall to go back to a stock configuration when all else fails (and I don't run a TouchWiz ROM, but even then those weren't THAT bad). Certainly no missed texts, and I didn't really notice any missed calls either. To me, that means you're either (A) getting lemons, (B) have a reception issue, or (C) are messing with your phone and aren't telling us. I'm cool with giving the benefit of the doubt on C.
If you're really motivated to get it figured out, try keeping a journal with where you are, what time it happened, and what failed and how.
Thank you for the reply.
The phone is 100% stock. This one has not been rooted or compromised in anyway. I did root my first one, and tried to install a lagfix, unsuccessfully. But then reverted back to stock. The first one ONLY had the missed call issue, which Samsung tried to address with the new EE19 radio update. But they took my good Mes, and make me swap it out within my 30 days for another "hoping it would fix the missing call problem". I knew it wouldn't because thousands of other users were having the same issues.
The second handset is the one with all the issues, the stock alarm app force closes during the night and wont go off in the am (twice) or when I turn the alarm off at night it still goes off in the am. The email app has to be force closed all the time and re-opened. It does drop a lot of calls, and is cuts in and out during calls. Reception does seem to be a major issue, but everyone else's phones work fine. We have several uscellular phones here, and a co-worker with a Droid 2 global from verizon (his signal strength is MUCH better than mine). I'm hoping its a broken antennae. The first one worked flawlessly in the same locations (before the leaves sprouted though).
-I've had many other issues too, like the screen going black and unresponsive except for the status bar. No buttons work, but it allows me to power down, BUT WILL NOT TURN BACK ON without battery removal. Other bugs, and issues too.
On this second handset I have the new EE19 update, which seems to be exacerbating my problems. I didn't have much for texting issues pre-update, and now post update get a lot of them. Maybe the EE19 radio is not as good? I have not actually received the third phone yet, but have no confidence in it now.
I don't have a computer programming degree or background, and am not familiar with flashing custom roms, and linux and all of that. But I'm trying to learn, and may try some different radios, and different roms. I'm interested in gingerbread for EE19, but its hard to search on here. I also want a voodoo lagfix.
The Mes does have a pretty weak antenna from what I have seen. There are a lot of people that have said they get worse reception with it then they did with a similar USCC phone (Desire for example).
I live in the middle of bumfuct and I have some of the missed call, text issues though not horrible and as with ee19 as I did with ec10. Depending on how I hold the phone I can go from full reception to no reception, same thing room to room. Also, there are times where I'll get no interwebs access without a battery pull and restart, like it won't reconnect after so long. If I was to guess though I would say its more of a reception issue than an overall phone issue. I have been on ec01 and the issues remained the same, but I like my mes, especially in comparison to the acclaim I had before it, though the acclaim did have better overall reception everything else about was "the gay". Have you tried different alarm clock, email apps from the market? Maybe that would help. I had no issues with my blackberry curve before the acclaim but it wasnt nearly as fun as the androids I've had. I'd say if the new apps don't help, maybe try a different phone, lg, htc, blackberry, there is lots of options out there.

I agree that it does sound like a reception issue. Problem is, I live in the downtown of a college city, and am supposed to have full 100% reception. I work in My state Capital, and once again, full reception. My other work location also has full reception according to their coverage maps. I think they need to issue me a real phone, and not just more Mesmerizes.

ummm .... didn't you choose the phone?
Not really. They only had two options at the time. The samsung mesmerize with 7hr battery life, and the HTC Desire with a 2.5hr battery life. I made the logical choice.
I would say at this point make them give you another mez and give it a try. Unfortunately, my experience with this phone and the belief project in general, they are taking “swapped" phones and recycling them back into the pool. I guess they are banking on someone else getting the phone and not realizing its a flaming hot mess.
I had to get 2 swaps done to get one that works.
The problems you described are very unusual for the phone in my experience.
Get one more swap, then get the store to apply the EE19 update before you register it. Do a PRL update after that (*228) and you should be good to go. I'm going on 2 weeks with a stock EE19 from the shop. I rooted with S1C, been running great since I got it.

So where did you make up that information from?
LaTuFu,
I believe you are absolutely correct! They do take their returned phones and ship them right back out to unsuspecting customers. Mine arrived today with packing tape all over the screen, and a scratched up camera lens. What kind of warranty replacement is that? So much for Uscellular having "the best customer satisfaction and network satisfaction of any national carrier".
Anyone getting sick of only having 1 bar with 3g being flaky? Maybe it's my area (milwaukee), maybe its the new ee19 radio, maybe it's the rom. Is it just me or are other experiencing issues?
p.s. Yes i've done *228
I have my mesmerize fully flashed to boost mobile. All settings are in place correctly, and I get 1x constantly.... when 3g pops up it stays dormant, or I get 1 up arrow, one down arrow, and then bam back to 1x. Speed tests on 1x reveal that it is clearly 1x, as the speeds are never higher than 200kbps. I think the mesmerize has a weak antenna and I have read non stop **** about the flaky failure 3g. I have been toying with the idea of flashing the fascinate radio to my mesmerize to see if thatd help, but honestly have just been wishing there was a sprint radio I could flash.
Heh I've considered going to at and t or verizon. I've used probably 4 Diff radios including a fascinate one and it didn't make any Diff.

I'm using EE19PnP and having bad data connection that comes and goes. Only issue I've had with the ROM. We'll see what happens.
After flashing The 6/22 Heinz rom, I've lost all data connection while roaming. I've tried everything I can think of to fix. The latest I tried was I just flashed the full EE19 build and dialed *228 to update prl and left everything completely stock, still no luck. Before that, I tried a nandroid restore to prior to the flash where everything ran great and I was getting 2 days out of the battery. I can't figure out what happened or how to fix it. Any ideas?
I had the same issue. Called the tech at my local store and he knew exactly what was wrong. They have to change a setting on their (USCC) side after you update to ee19. Since then, not a problem with data connection

Wait, so you had flaky data or literally no data at all?
I talked with uscc. She said they had a problem with roaming 3g in the update that was performed by a uscc store, but not the Kies. Does anyone know if the full EE19 retore in the "get your phone back to stock" was pulled from what the uscc stores received to update phones in house? This way they'll know how to fix it.
From what phidelt says it was pulled from keis and put into odin form.

I know that the EE19 update package was pulled from kies, but wasn't sure if the full EE19 restore was as well.
That one I'm not positive about. I would think so but will want to wait for confirmation.

Any idea what they did?
I am also in the Milwaukee area, with Heinz57 v1.3, and get 1-2 bars with flaky 3g, I would love to know what they did as well, I've been searching all over for any kind of fix, but have not found anything very useful at all yet, other than external antennas which is a path I would rather not try if there is a simpler option.
I wonder if it's an area thing?
I'm running a completely different ROM (MIUI 1.7.1.3), but running the EE19 radio, and my 3g seems fairly good. I haven't been running it *that* long, less than a week, but it still seems pretty stable/fast. I used to have occasional problems with the EC10 radio on the old froyo MIUI v8 Mes port dropping to 1x (sometimes staying in 1x for hours), but eventually I could get back to 3g. I'm only ever showing 1-2 bars, but if I recall our MIUI port may not correctly display reception bars relative to actual phone reception (especially the case in old MIUI, where I ALWAYS showed 2 bars no matter what, I swear).
I'm not sure how helpful this really is, since I'm in a different location and running a different ROM, but at least thus far, I'd observe EE19 to have better reception/speed than EC10. Just my own limited experience though.
Chromwolf; thats a good point about the EE19 radio... im running the newest Heinz, which shows EE19 in the build number, but EC10 in the "Baseband version" which i might assume to mean EC10 radio...
It might be an area thing, but I have been much more north, where other people get 3+ bars, and I struggle to get one. I have the dBm show in my statusbar, and it actually varies from the dBm in the phone status though, but that might just be a refresh discrepancy.
Did you flash the EE19 radio seperate from the MIUI rom? I would like to give that a shot, but a quick google search didnt give me any places to download the EE19 radio by itself.

We don't have a stand alone radio file (that I'm aware of). Just update to stock EE19 and reflash the ROM.
According to the TSM guys the dBm that shows in status bar is being pulled from a different place than it is in the phone status menu. No idea what the difference is but that's what I was told when I saw the same thing a while back.

gotcha, Ill do that and see what happens. I missed that line in the Heinz post, to update to EE19 before flashing Heinz, so I suppose thats my fault
FWIW I have had this phone since December, and I have taken it from the South Carolina coast up through Tennessee and into Chicago (which probably doesn't count, since US Cell is the biggest player there), and I've found the coverage maps to be pretty accurate. I've never had a trouble getting a signal or getting solid 3g, unless I'm in a building. The only issue I've ever had was running cm7 and my phone messing up and thinking it was supposed to be on verizon. Then I did get 1x and a flaky connection.
If I were in your shoes, I'd do a complete wipe, etc, with EE19. Not the update package. Take it to stock like a new phone and see how that helps, and if it doesn't, take it to the store.

Actually, I'm almost positive I've seen separate Odin flashes for both the EC10 and EE19 radios buried in a different thread somewhere care of Phidelt82, but I couldn't tell you which thread that was in. XP
I grabbed the full EE19 ROM Odin Phi originally posted, picked the TAR.MD5 apart, and Heimdall'd just the modem while on old MIUI v8 (Froyo), then flashed to GB MIUI MTD.
That said.....

I think I like this advice better for your issue. It weeds out the possibility for other stuff getting in the way. I'd Nandroid first, Titanium Backup all your apps, then Odin fresh to EC10, then EE19 like knoxjon suggests (from what I saw in the EE19 package I used, it's not a full package and won't repartition since it doesn't flash any bootloaders---but I could be wrong), and finally, flash H57.
EDIT: Actually, "not the update package"... is there a full EE19 with bootloaders and everything I'm not aware of..?
I was hoping to get a modem that actually works - And when I can actually see something I see 4 bars of LTE where I normally can barely pull 2. Unfortunately, I pretty much can't see anything other than FC messages and a phone asking me to pick a launcher after I've already chosen one.

Works great with UCALC4, but I flash UCLC5 and it's like my phone took a gun to its head.
I can't say why your phone is having these problems, but it sounds like you may need to reflash things. I typically follow the modem flashing pattern of two times 30 seconds apart and then a 60 second pause before restarting [Thanks to whoever posted this in their post originally as I can't find it]
I will say this about the UCLC5 modem in general. Once flashed on my ICS rocket, it would give me a reading of more bars in the same position. However, download speeds were exactly the same, and upload speeds were absolutely terrible. I could care less how many bars it shows. I'd rather have it fast, so I went back to the standard ICS modem for now.
Try Blaze 4g from the t989 forum. I used it for a few days and it worked well.

Well I tried that, and I tried about seven other patterns and orders of flashing various things since I was completely restarting from scratch. My phone just hates it. I've probably tried flashing it about eight different times, different ways each time and including twice with a different ROM.

Some people it works, some people it gives hell. I really don't get it. It must just be the fact that all phones aren't created equal. Maybe your phone has the slightest hardware difference that makes it not take. That and its not really for our phone. Our ics modem really sucks.

Where I live its a struggle for signal, I'm out in hick country and every bar matters. Lc5 shows the correct signal strength for me while our stock ics modem shows more bars when I'm really in a poor area. I need the modem to tell me I'm in a bad zone to wait on that text message or phone call. 1 bar realistic will show 3 on the skyrocket ics modem and I wont be able to send a text, lc5 shows one and I know it's a bad time. Also I have no lte here, ****s slow regardless.
I guess modem choice lands on where you live and what works best, that is if you can even get o to work LOL.

Just don't use UCLC5. I've tried more than a few times, overlaps no-wipes as well as fresh installs with different ROMs and it still chokes. I gave up.
UCLC5 doesn't work on my Skyrocket with NexusMod Beta 3 either. Maybe that ROM just doesn't work with that radio.
I have UCLC5 on mine running NexusMod b3 and it seems to be working well. Battery may have improved a smidgin, and i have yet to see a FC. I flashed last night, so its still new.
But like i said, I have no problems with it.
I tried wiping and reinstalling NexusMod b3 then UCLC5 and still no dice. It boots then as soon as Trebuchet loads it freezes. Looks like I'm stuck with UCALC4 and 2MB up/200KB down for the time being.
I searched but didn't come up with anything, or I'm doing it wrong.
In the last three days suddenly I have little-to-no signal. My wife has a SGS4G with the stock T-mobile Gingerbread ROM on it and she'll have anywhere from 2-3 bars more signal than I do.
Right now I'm staring at my phone and I have excellent wi-fi (being 6 feet from my router) but no cell signal at all.
I haven't done anything differently with my phone in the last three days.
I *have* started jogging with it in the last few weeks... could the antenna be coming loose from the bouncing? I wear it in one of those neoprene armbands.
Where should I start?
Thanks in advance!
Jim
Signal bars are not going to be exact. Its better to check the dbm rating.
settings>about phone>status then check signal strength.
I have seen two phones running stock firmware sitting side by side and the bars are different but the dbm rating is the exact same.

Fair enough! So what is considered "good" signal? Earlier I had "-97dbm/11 asu" and no service. Right now I have -103/5 and 3 bars.
Also, I forgot to mention in my original post that sometimes when I have no service if I flip to airplane mode and back I get my service back. But then sometimes no.
Very annoying.
Thanks again!
Edit: Now I'm at -109/2 and no signal. My wife is at -105/4 and "2 bars." The phones are side-by-side.
You just have to wait. When the internet thing becomes "E" it usually becomes 4g in a few seconds to minutes.

Try a few different modems and test them for a bit to see which may work best for you.
A modem that works best for me here in Orlando may not work as good for someone in lets say.....Ohio
Okay I'll look into that. I still don't get why this would be a change in the last week when it's been fine for the last year that I've had the phone and the past two months I've been on VB. :dunno:

May just need to clean the phone...
I use to wipe format and reinstall windows on my computers every 6 months
Wiping doesn't do anything except get rid of all the apps and giving you more room. I would be a suggestion if you new how to back the stuff up. Also it will go back to little to no bars.

Well I'll look at a different modem - I'm just baffled that it could go to crap so fast. It's really irritating to have the data come and go while I'm standing still looking at a tower less than ¼ mile away.
I'll do some searching but if anyone has an idea of what modems work best for what & where... that'd be great.
Tried flashing to KG4.
"Mobile network not available."
Wifey's phone is running KJ6 just fine. *sigh*
Edit: Ditto for KC1. (I'm going through the modem thread to see what modems people like.)
Edit: Ditto for KG6.
Edit: Ditto for KD1.
Edit: Ditto for KI3. (Almost looked like it was going to work - had a little signal at first but it disappeared before I could register on the network.)

Wifi and modem are two separate chips so that makes sense. Seems like you've already done a lot to try and get better service. Have you flashed back to stock? I'd try that and then see. If the problem persists I would bet hardware.

I'm on the line with T-mobile tech support right now. She's recommended a "factory reset." I figured what the heck because it seems like the next step is reflashing VB again...
EDIT: Weird weird weird. The "factory reset" from the Settings menu didn't work. Tried it twice. Then I tried it from the CWM menu. Also did not delete my data. But after rebooting from the CWM "factory reset"... I had my signal back.
So........... wtf. lol
Right now I'm on KI3 and I guess I'll leave it unless I have some reason to switch back to KJ6. lol
Thanks for the help guys!
Hmm so I guess I was right....lol
About the wipe and re flash.
I just recently completed a move from Vegas to Phoenix. Upon arriving i saw that my mobile network just constantly bounced from edge to none to 4g to 3g and nothing ever above 2 bars. no matter where i go, thats the way it is. even when other people with TMO are right next to me and have perfect service. i finally bit the bullet and went into the tmo store and basically the guy told me that i had to get a new phone. My current rom is paranoid android but it does the same on AOSP MIUI and sense 4 viper rom. havent tried any others because i figure i have most of my bases covered there. ive flashed every combination of radio and RIL possible and it does the same thing. when i went in, they gave me a new sim card because they said my sim card was "2G" but seemed to pick up 4g just fine in vegas with 0 issues.
did my phone just really magically break while driving i guess?
another note: it seems worst when sending text messages, like ill recieve one with 2 bars of 3g, type it out, hit send, right after i hit send it just drops the service and says message cannot be delivered. i just have to keep getting it sent back and send it again until it finally goes through. this issue is very very frustrating. thanks for any help you guys can give me, i do want to get a new phone but need this one to work until i can afford it. oh yeah, newest firmware if that matters but i hadnt even updated it before i got out here, it was just one of things i tried to fix it. NOTHING has worked or even helped a little bit.
You and I live in different ends of the US but we seem to have the same issue. My wife has a Sensation also and has good signal most places when I can be right beside her and have no signal, just like right now, I will be lucky to get this to send. I too have tried several radios and RIL's also. I got some advice from mf2112 a short while back. I am just now going to look into it further. Check the pins that make connection to the back cover and make sure they all are making good connection. I am checking mine as soon as I get home, I am sick of not having signal when I know I should.
Hey guys i have an advice the same happened with me and i installed the official ruu with european radio and ril and it just went fine from there and after that i installed many roms(i lost the count anyway)it worked fine 4me try it out bestof luck

I just checked my connections and even lightly cleaned the dust off of them to see if maybe that was the issue. actually seems like it helped a little but not enough to solve the issue. it was definitely worth a shot though. might be placebo effect tho...

are you talking about flashing the actual RUU that says "mod edit: do not flash" or are you talking about the 3.33 firmware from europe? i flashed this firmware and it didnt help my issues. im wondering if i shouldnt try to go back to 100% stock or something this is very frustrating. the guy at the store told me "you know, when you flash things over and over sometimes stuff just breaks" which doesnt make any sense to me. every phone ive ever had i could flash as i please. and i wasnt even heavily flashing anything on this one until i started having this issue.
I have done exactly what the poster has done.
I have done everything... here's what I know
The issue is only from cm9 and aokp.. try flashog hyper nonsense and you shouldn't have issues.. problem is u lose all the aokp settings
It seems.like the issues flux in out.. one day it will work.. one day it wont.. sometimes I.wonder if the tower you are connected to.makes a difference
No,.it.doesn't break from.flashing it.over and over.. the storage is flash so it doesn't have a limit
Regards
