[Q] Little to no signal? [Valhalla Black] - Samsung Galaxy S (4G Model)

I searched but didn't come up with anything, or I'm doing it wrong.
In the last three days suddenly I have little-to-no signal. My wife has a SGS4G with the stock T-mobile Gingerbread ROM on it and she'll have anywhere from 2-3 bars more signal than I do.
Right now I'm staring at my phone and I have excellent wi-fi (being 6 feet from my router) but no cell signal at all.
I haven't done anything differently with my phone in the last three days.
I *have* started jogging with it in the last few weeks... could the antenna be coming loose from the bouncing? I wear it in one of those neoprene armbands.
Where should I start?
Thanks in advance!
Jim

Signal bars are not going to be exact. Its better to check the dbm rating.
settings>about phone>status then check signal strength.
I have seen two phones running stock firmware sitting side by side and the bars are different but the dbm rating is the exact same.

Fair enough! So what is considered "good" signal? Earlier I had "-97dbm/11 asu" and no service. Right now I have -103/5 and 3 bars.
Also, I forgot to mention in my original post that sometimes when I have no service if I flip to airplane mode and back I get my service back. But then sometimes no.
Very annoying.
Thanks again!
Edit: Now I'm at -109/2 and no signal. My wife is at -105/4 and "2 bars." The phones are side-by-side.

You just have to wait. When the internet thing becomes "E" it usually becomes 4g in a few seconds to minutes.

Try a few different modems and test them for a bit to see which may work best for you.
A modem that works best for me here in Orlando may not work as good for someone in lets say.....Ohio

Okay I'll look into that. I still don't get why this would be a change in the last week when it's been fine for the last year that I've had the phone and the past two months I've been on VB. :dunno:

May just need to clean the phone...
I use to wipe format and reinstall windows on my computers every 6 months

Wiping doesn't do anything except get rid of all the apps and giving you more room. I would be a suggestion if you new how to back the stuff up. Also it will go back to little to no bars.

Well I'll look at a different modem - I'm just baffled that it could go to crap so fast. It's really irritating to have the data come and go while I'm standing still looking at a tower less than ΒΌ mile away.
I'll do some searching but if anyone has an idea of what modems work best for what & where... that'd be great.

Tried flashing to KG4.
"Mobile network not available."
Wifey's phone is running KJ6 just fine. *sigh*
Edit: Ditto for KC1. (I'm going through the modem thread to see what modems people like.)
Edit: Ditto for KG6.
Edit: Ditto for KD1.
Edit: Ditto for KI3. (Almost looked like it was going to work - had a little signal at first but it disappeared before I could register on the network.)

Wifi and modem are two separate chips so that makes sense. Seems like you've already done a lot to try and get better service. Have you flashed back to stock? I'd try that and then see. If the problem persists I would bet hardware.

I'm on the line with T-mobile tech support right now. She's recommended a "factory reset." I figured what the heck because it seems like the next step is reflashing VB again...
EDIT: Weird weird weird. The "factory reset" from the Settings menu didn't work. Tried it twice. Then I tried it from the CWM menu. Also did not delete my data. But after rebooting from the CWM "factory reset"... I had my signal back.
So........... wtf. lol
Right now I'm on KI3 and I guess I'll leave it unless I have some reason to switch back to KJ6. lol
Thanks for the help guys!

Hmm so I guess I was right....lol
About the wipe and re flash.

Any way to improve wifi reception?

Is the problem the hardware? Or can the software be tweaked? Just wanna know because as everyone knows it is horrible on this phone.

Helpful....
and really, 30 feet? that's not exactly far.....
Its not the router, it is the phone. Mine, though it will remember the networks I use, will NEVER reconnect to one when its in range. Signal strength is also an issue. All previous phones I've had have been able to get at least 2 bars of wifi signal at the other end of our house, but the Infuse just can't do it. Drops to the very least signal indicator on the display and will not pull any data.
I've had a bit better luck with Infused 1.6, but it may just be in my head as I don't think that it actually changes anything in the software for wifi over the stock ROM.
There are a LOT of posts about this and there doesn't seem to be an answer (at least that I have been able to find) to it or any work-arounds. This is really my only complaint with the phone, the wifi is absolute garbage. Some have said that its because the phone only does b/g and not N, so if you have N and you can set it to B or G that may be better.

Well from 30 feet away you should have full bars.
But at the op, I know what you mean about wifi signal. I learned though that even though it shows low bars, my speed was still good.
On the other hand, for some odd reason the miui rom made my wifi signal better. I went from about 16 mbs down to 23 down. Maybe a coincidence, I dunno.

I think it's mostly a hardware problem. The consensus among those who own the phone seems to be that wifi reception is average to poor.
I don't have the knowledge to be able to speak authoritatively, but I think software *can* have an impact.
With my particular Infuse, I have better reception with the new MIUI rom posted by Mikey than anything else I've tried (almost all of them). I get full reception - "excellent" - in locations where on any other rom I would have "fair" or "poor"...
I don't know if this makes sense but that is my experience.

While Strych is being rude (normal from his other posts) I have to agree that it might just be your situation.
My router is on the ground floor and I can use my wifi from the third floor in my house.
Then again I've used Wifi Analyzer (from the market) to test the channels and see what wans were overlapping mine and select one that was empty with good strength.
I also tend not to flash beta roms and then wonder why things aren't working as expected.
If you want help with your issue, you may want to post in the Q&A forum and describe what you're running, what problem you're having (specifically), and what you've done to test/fix the problem. Otherwise, if you're just ranting, I can understand that as well.
Hmm well a lot of helpful tips. I will be purchasing a brand new router. The one I have is just a basic Linksys. So ill upgrade the next level up. Idk I've never been able to get great reception. But on the flipside Ive always used a basic router.

What were you on before? AT&T Froyo or Rogers Gingerbread?
One of the problems with Rogers Gingerbread were crappy TCP buffer settings - CM7 had the "better" AT&T settings for a long time until it was updated to the new UCKI3/I4 settings. This would explain faster WiFi performance regardless of signal quality.
Signal quality has always been fine for me. Froyo has some annoying power management issues where the wifi chipset basically dies and needs to be disabled/reenabled to reconnect (This is actually common across many devices with the BCM4330 - happens a lot on the Tab 10.1 too, and in that case it's sometimes so bad that it hoses up the lockscreen.), Gingerbread seems to have fixed the wifi-death issues on our devices.

I am pretty sure this wifi problem is def not your router. I use wifi here at work and home while both receptions are TERRIBLE. I think its hardware related because I have still yet to find anyone with a fix.

I agree...both the thrill and my new phone have better reception and speeds than my infuse did.. same conditions/same router

I also have the same exact issue. I went thru 3 diff routers and no change. I also have an inspire and a iphone and they connect perfectly when mine cant. I live in a apartment and my router is in the same room. My wifes inspire works and mine dont. I know one of you are gonna say something like maybe you have too many things connected. Well that would be false. Both inspires had no problems but when i got my infuse it was just still 2 phones connected. Im calling samsung tomorrow to see what they have to say. [Q] Signal Indicator and Signal Not in Sync

I've been running Valhalla v1.3.2 since it was released (about 13 days). About 5 days ago I started having issues with reception. I tried different modems from the modem thread and that didn't work. So I tried reflashing the ROM and that also didn't work. I checked the check sums after downloading the ROM, so I know I got a good file.
As I mentioned, these issues are new in the last 5 days, reception was great a week ago.
What I've noticed in the last couple days are two things.
1. The signal indicator on the top of the phone doesn't match up with actual signal. In the one attached screenshot you can see it indicating 3 bars of service, but no carrier. The other screenshot shows 2 bars and no carrier. I've also been driving and had dropped calls while indicating 4 bars service. I work 30 miles from home, so this isn't an issue with a single tower.
2. The ROM has the signal indicators themed green, although, as you can see, sometimes when I'm having issues they go back to gray.
Any help would be greatly appreciated as I'm basically relying on wifi calling at this point.
Thank you,
Ryan
Maybe verify with T-Mobile that they're not having issues, also. We had a problem here for over a day where we had bars but couldn't place calls, calls dropped, etc, and it was occurring all over the city.
Not sure if it'll make a difference, but maybe make sure your SIM card is clean & snug, possibly even replace the SIM if necessary.
Good luck; I'm curious what the issue is.
The signal indicator going from grey to green is a Gingerbread feature, not a bug. It indicates if the signal is "locked on" or not. My friend has a Nexus S and it does the same thing.
It's difficult to say if your signal problem is the phone or something in your area. I get the same issue when I'm at work but I know for a fact it's because the tower is far and the building blocks a lot of signal for all phones regardless of carrier. It sounds like a true weak signal though, could be caused by the tower having issues or some interference.

Thank you for the suggestion, but I don't think the green/gray is working as designed. With the Valhalla rom the OP specifically mentioned in one version he'd forgotten to theme the signal indicator. Likewise, sometimes when I can make calls it's green, sometimes it's gray, so it doesn't seem to be specific to signal status.
I called t-mobile customer care yesterday and they told me to go to the store and get an new SIM card as mine was outdated. I did that today and am still having the same issues. I'm thinking of ODINing back to stock KD1 to see how things go.
Thoughts?

I was really hoping the SIM card would work out for you. Going back to KD1 isn't a bad test to see if the problem goes away. Keep me posted, I'm curious if it makes a difference. If so, maybe shoot for KG4 as it was the first GB ROM to come with the boot loaders & see if the phone still acts normal.
I get the same grey / white bars when the phone first boots, and occasionally during normal operation. It usually lasts for 5 to 10 seconds and doesn't seem to affect signal quality at all.
Green means its synced with Google. Grey means its not.

I experienced similar issues, for me when the bars were gray I had no data. Facebook wouldn't connect and my widgets weren't able to update. I was still texting and receiving MMS fine. I hardly make calls so not certain if those were ever effected. I still get this happening to me maybe once a day but I simply throw on Airplane mode then turn it right off and my data is once again flowing.
I called TMobile again and they asked me to uninstall all my apps while I was on the phone with them to make sure nothing there was interfering. I didn't have time to do that at the moment, so I told them I'd call back. In the interest of getting everything bone stock, I figured I'd ODIN the stock KD1. However, when I look at the bible thread all I can find is a deodexed KD1 with root. I can't seem to find the true stock KD1 rom. Where can I get that?
Thanks again,
Ryan

Anyone else have a link?
edit: the SGH-T959 is listed as being supported on that thread, but not the SGH-T959V .
just go to samfirmware.com and download the stock kd1 file, you'll have to sign up so you can download it but its free
After a few more go arounds, the decision is that my phone is dead. So I'm getting a G2x in it's place.
I'll miss the SGS4g community here. Valhalla was great as was Black Ice and ICBINB.

Sorry, it's already gone. You have to ask quick around here .

So my phone really doesn't like the UCLC5 modem...Ideas?

I was hoping to get a modem that actually works - And when I can actually see something I see 4 bars of LTE where I normally can barely pull 2. Unfortunately, I pretty much can't see anything other than FC messages and a phone asking me to pick a launcher after I've already chosen one.
ROM:NexusMod Beta 3
Kernel: Whatever NM b3 comes with.

Works great with UCALC4, but I flash UCLC5 and it's like my phone took a gun to its head.
I can't say why your phone is having these problems, but it sounds like you may need to reflash things. I typically follow the modem flashing pattern of two times 30 seconds apart and then a 60 second pause before restarting [Thanks to whoever posted this in their post originally as I can't find it]
I will say this about the UCLC5 modem in general. Once flashed on my ICS rocket, it would give me a reading of more bars in the same position. However, download speeds were exactly the same, and upload speeds were absolutely terrible. I could care less how many bars it shows. I'd rather have it fast, so I went back to the standard ICS modem for now.
Try Blaze 4g from the t989 forum. I used it for a few days and it worked well.

Well I tried that, and I tried about seven other patterns and orders of flashing various things since I was completely restarting from scratch. My phone just hates it. I've probably tried flashing it about eight different times, different ways each time and including twice with a different ROM.
I'm just going to go back to UCALC4 since I need a working phone more than I need a phone that works better.

Some people it works, some people it gives hell. I really don't get it. It must just be the fact that all phones aren't created equal. Maybe your phone has the slightest hardware difference that makes it not take. That and its not really for our phone. Our ics modem really sucks.

Where I live its a struggle for signal, I'm out in hick country and every bar matters. Lc5 shows the correct signal strength for me while our stock ics modem shows more bars when I'm really in a poor area. I need the modem to tell me I'm in a bad zone to wait on that text message or phone call. 1 bar realistic will show 3 on the skyrocket ics modem and I wont be able to send a text, lc5 shows one and I know it's a bad time. Also I have no lte here, ****s slow regardless.
I guess modem choice lands on where you live and what works best, that is if you can even get o to work LOL.

Just don't use UCLC5. I've tried more than a few times, overlaps no-wipes as well as fresh installs with different ROMs and it still chokes. I gave up.
UCLC5 doesn't work on my Skyrocket with NexusMod Beta 3 either. Maybe that ROM just doesn't work with that radio.
I have UCLC5 on mine running NexusMod b3 and it seems to be working well. Battery may have improved a smidgin, and i have yet to see a FC. I flashed last night, so its still new.
But like i said, I have no problems with it.
I tried wiping and reinstalling NexusMod b3 then UCLC5 and still no dice. It boots then as soon as Trebuchet loads it freezes. Looks like I'm stuck with UCALC4 and 2MB up/200KB down for the time being.

[Q] Reception issues?

Unlike some people I've always had pretty good reception on my S3 where I live near Chicago. I had been running "Jelly Beans Build 4" for several weeks with no problems (using K1 Modem and Stock Kernel). Then last week I updated to the new Beans build, Build 6 and installed the K3 Modem and RPM (running LeanKernel). Ever since doing that, my reception has gone from always around 4 bars to usually hovering around 1-2 (happens both when I'm at home, and at work in the city and has been pretty consistent). I tried going back to the K1 modems and it didn't change anything (ended up trying all the JB modems with no differing results). I've also tried flashing the stock kernel again. No matter what I do, my reception doesn't seem to change and I can't get it back to where it used to be. Is there anything else I can try? I'm about to flash back to another ROM to see if that changes anything. Any ideas would be great though. Thanks guys.
Maybe check to see if your prl version is up to date. Do this by going to settings about phone them status. Should be 15154. If that is good no modems work and previous roms are no success then maybe they are doing work on some towers in your area. That happened to a coworker of mine on sprint and once they were finished everything went back to normal maybe even better but it took about a week of him pulling out his hair. (he is bald now). hope this helps and good luck.

Thanks for the advice; yeah I checked, the PRL is up to date as well. And flashing back to another build didn't make any difference. So I'm beginning to think maybe you're right, maybe they are doing construction or something.

[Q] Wifi Help

Hey xda-devs. I've got a Samsung Galaxy S 4G and I'm having a bit of an issue with the wifi. First of all, this is not flashed nor rooted. At first I wasn't able to get any connection to my wifi from my room. It would show 1-2 bars of connection but a 5mb connection speed which does nothing. About a weeks after that the wifi started working in my room. This happened for about a week. Now it's doing the same thing it did the first time. Does anyone know how to fix this or get better reception on phone? Do I need to put a new modem on it?
Move your router better? Seems like maybe someone was or wasn't in the way before or somedays, wifi works better than other. but if on stock, you only get 5mb, no modem or rom is going to fix that, seems like it's a distance thing.

Well it seems like moving the router better fixes every problem. Let me elaborate some more then.
It's just this phone. One of my friends has the same model yet gets better reception than I do. This phone is a used phone and it's been dropped. I'm thinking the antenna might have gone bad from these drops.
Some router brands and isp's work better with this phone, some less. I had better connection when using att service at my friend's house than at mine on Time Warner. I believe it was the router. My original router from Linksys on g band gave full signal, while my new supposedly "state-of-the-art" router from dlink on n band only gives me 2 bars. But hey, as long as u have a connection, you are good as a full signal.
Hit the thanks button if it helps. It's my motivator to be more helpful.

What? Since when? Signal strength is huge for how much bandwidth you can actually use out of what's available. Think of it like a water supply. The person closest to the supply gets most of what's available. The person 300 feet down the line gets less because of friction loss. Same principle just described really badly by me. LOL
Well, I was able to watch netflix on 2 bars without a hiccup. Signal strength only applicable if you have a lot of users connecting to the same router. Here is an analogy: if you only need to consume to 8 glasses of water to stay healthy, do you really need a whole tank of water?

Good analogy. Try this one. Say your house is on fire. Do you want to put it out with cups or would you want that water tank close by?
Lol, that is not the same.

Sure it is. Its based on how much of a resource you can use. Cups if your far away the whole tank if you're close. Why settle for cups?
Alrighty, no help so far. Here's an update on the situation. Whenever I'm like less than a foot away from my router I have full bars and the internet on my phone is running full speed. Then it disconnects for a few seconds to a minute saying I have no wifi. Anyone know how to fix this issue?
Does this happen on other wifi networks outside of your home? Or you might have hardware problem then.

I do randomly disconnect from other networks as well. So this is a hardware issue then?
We can't determine it is a hardware problem yet. Try to do a factory reset or perhaps flashing a new Gingerbread rom on this forum. Use AntonX version. Is your phone on Froyo or Gingerbread?

I also have this phone, at first I was on froyo but hated it and upgraded to ICS.....I've used 2 different ROMs but all have really poor wifi signals.....where I can connect on my nexus 7 I can't even get one bar on my phone...if I'm in the same room as the router I get one bar. My friend said its a ICS problem and that all ROMs have the same problem and that flashing a kernel won't help. He also said that To get a better signal I would have to go back to froyo.....is there really no other way????
Please help and tell me how our WiFi is on your device!!
I'm running aokp latest build

ICS displays signal strength differently from Froyo/GB. If you want an accurate view, use a ROM with percentage display rather than bars. It's still the same, it just looks different.
Yeah I read that but it's not just the bars I'm not seeing..... I'm not connecting either!!! To use my Wi-Fi I have to be exactly in the sane room as the router or the room right next to it!! And that's really limiting!!

Not sure what kind of router you are using. I would look at dd-wrt router software so you can turn up the output signal of the router. I have a netgear router that is a repeater in the house. The output on it is turned as high as possible without deteriorating the signal. And that helps the devices that have piss poor reception on the other side of the house.

Factory reset was no good. I'm using Froyo. So I should flash Gingerbread?
