[Q] Try new kernels on rooted i9023 with Bootloader still locked - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a GSM Nexus S (i9023) with stock ICS that I rooted without unlocking the bootloader (I used this excellent script).
After installing several root apps, I'm now looking at various kernels and I'm tempted to try and experiment a bit (interested in particular in trying Deep Idle), but I'm not familiar with kernels at all.
I had a look at many posts but could not figure out if I can install kernels on a rooted phone without touching the bootloader (basically I would like to maintain the current configuration with locked bootloader).
Any views if this can be done?
Thx in advance

I am just jumping into the android moding world, and I just can't seem to find clarification on a particular issue. It seems that most phones are rootable but many have a locked bootloader. From what I can glean through reading many posts here and searching the web, the geekish options that you give up on a phone with a locked bootloader is the ability to flash the ROM. However, this is contradicted by examples here on this site of ROMs for phones with locked bootloaders. (Moto Atrix for example.) Is it that custom ROMs can only go so far with rooting alone, like the inability to replace the kernel? What exactly do you give up by only achieving root with a locked bootloader vs a rooted phone with an unlocked bootloader? Is it ROM related at all?

You can't flash a custom rom without root. Root is needed to write to system partition etc.
But you can get root without a custom rom.
A locked bootloader means you will have to stay on stock rom. Means no custom kernels, no custom firmware.
Someone correct me if im wrong.
still confused
As mentioned there seem to be custom ROMs for for phones with a locked bootloader. The new Motorola Atrix is an example. While there is complaining that the bootloader is locked there are custom ROMs (2, I believe, so far) available from members of this forum. What is it that can't be done with a locked bootloader?
I'm still confused, but I appreciate the reply.

Rooting Nexus S without unlocking bootloader

I've seen many different rooting methods for the nexus s but unfortunately they don't allow rooting without unlocking the bootloader like the samsung vibrant allows is there anyway I can root my phone without unlocking the bootloader?
why I don't want to unloack the boot loader because I'm fine with the stock ROM on my nexus s. I was really into installing ROMs and things with my Vibrant but the Nexus S feels really complete so I feel like I don't need to unlock my boot loader
Also for the first time I have decent signal in my house after switiching from my blackberry to android so I don't wanna change my baseband and my battery life is good too so I don't want to mess with the kernel
Nope, can't root w/o unlocking bootloader anymore.
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
If it means anything, u can re-lock the bootloader just as easily as u can unlock it.
Also, u can unlock and root without messing with baseband or kernel.

You don't have to change any of those things with an unlocked boot loader. Unlocking the boot loader does only one thing, unlock the boot loader. It doesn't need a custom rom. You don't even have to install a custom recovery if you don't want to.
All stock OTAs will continue to work as well - it will just allow you to load a custom recovery and the su binary if you please, with the ability to relock at any point in the future if desired.
One of the features of the nexus line of phones (and upcoming unlockable boot loaders) is that you aren't reliant on finding an exploit to elevate privileges in order to gain root access - you simply unlock the boot loader and you are free to do as you please (or not do if you choose).

worked perfectly on my i9023 running stock ICS.

[Q] Locked bootloader x10 mini pro

Hi everyone,
I've recently rooted, unlocked bootloader, installed MiniCM7 and flashed the nAa kernel; all was satisfactory up until I discovered my signal was now non-existent. I have since returned everything to stock and executed msm7227_semc which seems to have restored signal
My question is this; if the bootloader needs to be locked to retain signal, does this mean, as a result of the above, I cannot run custom ROMs nor kernels without losing signal as I understand re-locking the bootloader whilst a custom kernel is installed will result in a bricked handset. If this isn't possible, how would I unlock the bootloader with no effect on signal?
Side note: I have tried to locate similar threads but to no avail.
Thanks for any advice you can offer.
Spike.

[Q] Quick Question for Quick Answer

Hello folks,
What is the benefit of rooting a locked bootloader phone? If I am understanding it correctly, if my phone is locked that means I cannot install custom ROM/Kernel or is that assumption wrong? FYI - According to my research my phone bootloader cannot be unlocked (thanks ROGERS!...)
I want to know to determine if I should use the up-to-date firmware or downgrade my firmware and root it.
thanks!
Vicente
with root on locked bootloader phone, you can save drm keys to relock in a future in case you want.
If you only want to use some apps that need root (like Titanium, Greenify, SoftKeyz...) but want to stay in stock.
and you understands correctly, if you have a locked phone, you CAN'T flash custom rom or kernel (some phones have roms to locked bootloaders, but not this case....)
If you have locked bootloader you CAN use stock BASED custom roms. You can't use non stock based roms like cm12 etc. And also custom kernels can't be used like said before. Every rom should contain information if it's usable for locked bootloader or not in the OP
Backing up TA is not even useful for you since your bootloader can't be unlocked.
Root is used only for root apps like rootexplorer, titanium backup, xposed etc.

[q] need root assistance

I have an Xperia Z3 D6603 running android lollipop 5.0.2 and it says in my service menu that im not allowed to unlock my bootloader. ive heard that its posssible to change this on multiple occasions and seen phones of the exact same model and firmware as mine that have unlocked their bootloaders and rooted their phones and i would like to do the same. i have tried different methods of unlocking from both official and unoffical sources, with no success. if anyone can please tell me how i might change the status or how i can unlock my bootloader and root (yes ive heard the risks a million times, no i dont really care about losing the drm keys that allow better lowlight conditions with the camera, and my phone actually has slowed slightly since the lollipop update) it would be much appreciated and of course if any additional info is needed, i will of course provide such as quickly as i am able to. thanks in advance and all input is appreciated.
you cant unlock the bootloader then, if you want root then you will need to downgrade to kk and root the device and install a pre-rooted lp rom
