I've seen many different rooting methods for the nexus s but unfortunately they don't allow rooting without unlocking the bootloader like the samsung vibrant allows is there anyway I can root my phone without unlocking the bootloader?
why I don't want to unloack the boot loader because I'm fine with the stock ROM on my nexus s. I was really into installing ROMs and things with my Vibrant but the Nexus S feels really complete so I feel like I don't need to unlock my boot loader
Also for the first time I have decent signal in my house after switiching from my blackberry to android so I don't wanna change my baseband and my battery life is good too so I don't want to mess with the kernel

If it means anything, u can re-lock the bootloader just as easily as u can unlock it.
Also, u can unlock and root without messing with baseband or kernel.

You don't have to change any of those things with an unlocked boot loader. Unlocking the boot loader does only one thing, unlock the boot loader. It doesn't need a custom rom. You don't even have to install a custom recovery if you don't want to.
All stock OTAs will continue to work as well - it will just allow you to load a custom recovery and the su binary if you please, with the ability to relock at any point in the future if desired.
One of the features of the nexus line of phones (and upcoming unlockable boot loaders) is that you aren't reliant on finding an exploit to elevate privileges in order to gain root access - you simply unlock the boot loader and you are free to do as you please (or not do if you choose).

the bootloader was never locked. superoneclick gives you root. and to flash custom roms and kernels you need a recovery that lets you flash unsigned packages.
the boot loader is not locked but is not well understood. only motorola locks bootloaders and it has hindered rom building since the droidx/droid2. dont think hwever that a non locked bootloader means you can flash wp7 or winmo, or meego like on an hd2. thtere is alot of research being done on samsung bootloaders and it might come someday but right now it just means you can flash samsung based roms freely(cyanogen mod as well when it a kernel becomes available). recovery mode is locked but once rooted it can be overwritten with a recovery that lacks the signature check. look for gtg's video on the forum or on you tube it is insanely easy!
motorola isnt the only one that locks bootloaders. sonys have this problem bad and are responding by offering bootloader unlocks to a couple phones like the arc. htc joined in with its first bootloader locked phone, the sensation. motorola is actually unlocking their bootloaders in all new roms. hopefully htc sees how bad it is to make that move and joins motorola and sony.
I need to root, unlock, and install CWM right? How exactly do I do this? I tried to locate a how to without any luck.

OK I've read some more and had a couple more questions...
I noticed that the roms I've looked at don't require an unlocked phone. What's the point of unlocking the phone then? Can I just root and install CWM?
Some roms say "needs the 1.85 base." What does this mean and how do I get it before flashing a rom?

Some of the roms, prior to the unlock discovery, were executable as an RUU. All the updated versions require recovery which you need the bootloader unlocked to get in to. It's a painless process and there's even a 1-Click script method for those who dont want to take chances.
Will I be able to get the phone back to COMPLETELY stock should I decide to sell it in the future?

After unlocking your phone, there will be no way to get back to 100% stock unless we can get S-OFF (which hopefully may be in the near future due to a few devices already being S-OFF).
However, you can root your device and not unlock it (1.82 and prior as of now) and still be able to revert to 100% stock as if it came right out of the box.
Most of the ROMs currently do not require an unlocked bootloader.
However, this will definitely change as we begin to see custom kernels (hopefully soon with the release of the source by HTC Dev) and more complex ROMs (such as those based on AOSP, such as CM9 and AOKP).
So in short, you can still use most of the ROMs in the dev section. Just be aware however that if you do not unlock then you cannot install CWM (limiting the number of ROM options) and also if you update past 1.82.502.3 then you cannot root (at this time, other root exploits are being explored).

Nope. You are thinking of SIM unlock.
Bootloader unlock lets you load custom ROMs and change recovery, that's all.
There are many threads about how to unlock and root but things get old much fast, I feel like FAQ is too old to follow.
I prefer ask before make same thing wrong.
I have a Moto G 4g with lollipop locked and orginal, so I decide to put new thing now because same things are annoying me in the phone, I think xposed can help me well, so I only need unlock and put root, but need to know the last way to do this, I know unlock is easy but what recovery to flash and how? What I need to root? Is there same problem with xposed in lollipop?
I did come from Razer D3 mediatek, had not unlocked bootloader but was easy to root and te best way to custom was with xposed, so im more "acquainted" with this.
any help on this would be appreciated.

If your phone is not retail and your carrier locked your bootloader, it's not currently possible to unlock the bootloader or permanently root it. You can only temproot it currently.
If you want to flash a recovery your bootloader must be unlocked. You cannot flash anything with a locked bootloader. But if you wish to know, you can use TWRP or CWM for peregrine phones.
I am thinking of getting an S6 and i wanted a rootable phone. i see a root method available but no bootloader unlock and yet i see ROMs available. how does this work. i thought bootloader needed to be unlocked in order to do custom ROMs. Or is htere a verizon bootloader unlock available i could not find?

There is not and 99% chance there will never be a bootloader unlock. Root method no longer works in later versions of android. The bootloader does not need to be unlocked with a custom recovery.
I apologize for not diligently searching as I should, I came across this asking the same more or less as I was.... I have one sitting on lrx22g.g920vvru1a0c3 which if I read the root method correctly I can root... At that point you say that the boot loader doesn't need to be unlocked so I can ( mfastboot flash recover xxxx.IMG ) on a locked boot loader? Or use rashr ? And after which we can ROM it?... Could I then theme it as well? I am coming for Motorola's all I've ever had/used/touched ever.... Running stock do I need to deodex it to be able to theme it? Do we have firmware out there n a tool (like Moto's rsd lite/ house of moto) to flash it with? With unlimited data is there a mobile hotspot mod/hack use utilize the baked I hotspot app? Can I still pull system apps theme um zip um and flash up.... Not having the Sim card yet I can really play with it as I wish to ... I just powered it on and its asking for an update... OE2 is the latest firmware that is rootable. Once rooted, you can flash a custom recovery and load roms through that.
There is a rooted S6 available for sale on swappa right now, just so you know

It might sound dumb but I was wondering if it was possible to relock the bootloader while keeping root.
In fact, I did not want to modify my Honor 8 that much too soon but I enjoy playing some games on my phone using a pad, I did not want to spend alot so I just went with a pad I already have, the DualShock 4. It works well except the button mapping in native Android games, that's why I have to root to use Sixaxis app to solve the issue.
So I may have to root my device soon but I don't plan any other modification to the system atm and I particularly hate the warning message when you boot (gosh, I hated it on my Moto G but it was easy to replace).
That leads me to the thread title: Is it possible to root and then get rid of the unlocking message (relock the bootloader or anything else would be okayish)?
I just want to get root access on the phone for my gamepad issue and eventually setup some typical things such as a real adblocking solution (DNS66 is not bad but hosts file is still the way to go imo) and maybe Xposed.
Is there a way to reduce the modification on the phone? (Thus the idea of relocking it, I was thinking that maybe, once relocked it won't show the message. But maybe relocking just wipe the phone again? (as unlocking it does))

thats possible to relock bootloader .but if u used flash custom recovery and SuperSu.zip to root your phone , after rooted device , please reflash stock recovery vi fastboot and relock your bootloader

It was possible with the Nexus 5 and a few other phones to root it and then relock it. Obviously the only way to know if that's the case on this phone is to try it. But you just have to make sure that the stock recovery is there instead of twrp before relocking.
One brave soul needs to try it though. [emoji4]
