[Q] How to edit files via terminal? - Samsung Galaxy S (4G Model)

I'm trying to edit text in a specific file and save the changes.
I've found info on how to flash, push, pull, yadda yadda via terminal. But how do I simply change some text?
This is specifically what I'm trying to do.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=22367371&postcount=25
FYI I'm on 2.3.6 Vahalla black Edition Final

I'm not sure about terminal but couldn't you do this with Rootexplorer? Just go to /system/etc/init.d/ then mount as rw and long click the file 00remount and there's an option for open in text editor then add the line?
Lol I'm sure there's an easier way but this might be an alternative
Thank's aren't asked for but aappreciated

You can do the adb pull from the phone to your PC. If you're on Windows, use WordPad (not Notepad due to the CR+LF needs) then adb push it back. Keep in mind you have to have /system mounted and read/write to do that.
If you're on a Linux box, using Vi, Pico, Emacs, etc should suffice. The adb commands are the same either way.
Did I help or make it even more confusing?

Thanks guys.
I didn't know I could edit files with File Manager (RootExplorer same thing right). That was easy.
But now I'm left with more questions.
After getting to VBE Final everything ran smooth, quad score around 1850. Now after flashing the A.S. v14 the phone seems the same and now has quad of 1200. I know quads don't really mean much but this is weird.

Did you flash AS14 for Valhalla black or the universal one?

You can use vi directly on your phone since it comes preinstalled as a CLI program. It sounds like you prefer the gui approach though.
Also, did you update to the new quadrant? Its scores are different than the older versions.

Universal. I didn't see one specifically for VB. Dang it.

I do prefer to do things directly on the phone. I try to connect to a computer as little as possible.
And I do have the new version for Quadrant Standard (2.0, updated 2/13). I forgot that I read the new version is different.

dsexton702 says he's makin a few guides for a new booster. I'm assuming one might be specifically for valhalla black final. Everything is working fine now, so I'll wait until then to do anymore tweaks.

AJZ Hero Speedup Script

if you want a certain script added, chances are some1 else does too. if you have an idea, or find a script you want added, please either post or PM me. i take a look at this thread alot throughout the day, so i will be able to see your ideas quickly. YOUR IDEAS ARE IMPORTANT
first of all, i did not write this script, i took it from the thread HTC Hero Speedup v2.0 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=521421), which was put together by tehseano, who i must thank, however, it seems to only work for Haykuro's Hero ROM
THIS SCRIPT is made to speedup the HTC HERO rom on the g1's. my speedup script is made to work under JACman's. if tried on someone elses, you could brick your phone (although i doubt it), and i will not take responcibility for bricks
trying to use it under JACman 1.72, i couldn't get tehseano's script to work, so im going through a bunch of tweaking and editing for it to work under JACman roms (im guessing twistedumbrella's too).
currently, i'm about to release version 0.2. - released
i have fixed most of the directories and codes except for Battery fix, i have gotten the HTC camera to work, read the readme file
out of curiosity, does any1 have any preference on where i upload the files? want someplace easy and fast, so no rapidshare or anything like that. first working suggestion gets it
please do not use option #8 once it is up, it is not done yet
everything else should be good. this is made STRICTLY for JACman roms, not haykuro's, but twistedumbrella's should work, since it is based off of JACmans
____________________________________________________________________________________________
version 0.2 - http://www.4shared.com/file/113524687/c98398cd/AJZ_HeroSpeed_02.html
very minor changes
fixed the scripts
working on a battery fix
version 1.0 will be more compatible with JAChero 1.8, i expect to release that in the next few day, but this might not be possible because i'm going on vacation

I ACCIDENTLY UPLOADED THE BAT AS A TXT FILE. im not gunna change it, so until the next release, just rename the file as a bat
0.1.5: http://www.4shared.com/file/113343120/6c89dd65/AJZ_HeroSpeed_015.html
i must thank dpgc213 for creating the original lockscreen change bat file
Changes:
deleted option to delete pc sync, causes bootloops and doesnt exist
added possibility to change the screen lock image (although doesnt have to do with speed)
added quick directions for changing the lock screen image

version 0.1 - http://rapidshare.com/files/247165073/hero_speedup_2.0_AJZ_0.1.zip
here's a mirror of 0.1 http://www.4shared.com/file/113320662/7e513586/hero_speedup_20_AJZ_01.html
in version 0.2, expect to see support for the deletion of htc sync, and support for changing your lock screen
can you please include instructions for mac users? thanks good work
did you get it to work with JACman 1.72, you said you would try to tweak it, but did not say if you were successful?
I dont know how to apply the script cuz its made for windows, If some1 put instructions plz?

i got all the commands and everything working in 1.72 except for #2 to work. #2 will cause a boot loop.
#2 just deletes your htc sync, which idk what it does anyways.
in 0.2, i will try to fix this, as well as add support to change your lock screen
i got the change lockscreen part in, now just gatta see the problem with htc sync

When I ran option 3, 6 and 5 in that order without a reboot and then reboot after I did all those I got a bootloop, when I did #5 it was saying success on each one. If I installed dextop-wrapper awhile back like weeks ago do I have to install it again because I didn't install it. I figured I still had it.

Yes.
That's what I'm using ti with. And it's made Rosie completely usable for the first time for me.
Has anyone had the experience where Rosie was really fast when first optimizing using whatever procedure but then lags down over time? That was what I experienced when using a different optimizer. Hopefully this one is consistent.

[ROM-DEV] Android 2.0.1-r5v0.6 (Dead)

Android 2.0.1-r5v0.6
Dead:
==============
After spending some time and looking over this rom and ways to make it work with out any legal issues. The most viable option was to build something like what cynanogen has built. His process takes the proprietary bits (all google apps including sync) and copies them off onto the SD card before doing a update. After the update it copies them back to the newly installed rom. This method basically does a automated backup/restore of your licensed applications. I can't do this for several reasons including that we are supposed to be coming from a 1.5 OS to a 2.0.1, which isn't compatible with the older application set.
Temporarily Offline:
==============
I am sorry to have to do this but we are now having more then just a small handful goofing with this ROM and I need to take this offline while I inspect each of the parts and make sure all licensing is in order since its a bit more then the google Opensource framework. I know that several other ROM creators have not paid much attention to it as I am going to now but I really don't want to upset any IP holders like what happened to Cynanogen a couple months back.
I will put it back up but I want to make sure that I am totally covered and don't have any issues.
version 0.6: download (offline)
==============
-fixed wifi thanks to http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=593620
-Now starts up with Android stock keyboard. (No longer needs HTC_IME.apk for second keyboard)
A few have asked for this ROM so I thought I would put it up here for anyone that wants to contribute to or take from it.
This ROM is only compatible with the Sprint CDMA HTC Hero. It is not finished and still requires some work but its good enough for my day to day use and I am sure others may find the same potential.
This ROM is vanilla android and what it takes to actually get it running on a CDMA phone. It is built off of this GSM variant. I am going to try and work to remove the google bits so that you can use Cynanogens method of extracting your own and then doing a follow up update to install them. My efforts for this is not to build a better rom but to build a cleaner base that has limited to no proprietary IP.
Credits to all on this forum how have helped or contributed in any way to building the roms that are here. I would point out names but there are to many to name. I am positive that anyone that pays attention to this forum will know who you are. I used many parts of these ROM's and many others on XDA to build this one.
This is my first ROM and was primarily made for myself to help me learn how to create a custom ROM.
Here is the link to my blog where I originally posted about this and a video of it booting.
Here is the Youtube video of it booting: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tRTh-rXKe-E
*Warning*: Don't attempt to flash this ROM onto anything else unless you know what you are doing! I am not responsible for any device malfunctions or "Bricks".
Notes on Installing:
- Run a Nandroid backup before you do anything.
- Make sure you do a full wipe first. (Sorry )
- Run the update zip found * Version 0.6 *(offline) from the recovery console.
To get the HTC keyboard installed: (Now Optional as of Version 0.6)
- Follow the instructions here.
Things that don't work:
- Gallery some times has issues.
- Camera
- Wired or Wireless Tethering (Now Testing)
- Orientation
- Trackball light
- Trackball click (Rolling and moving are fine)
- (Let me know if something else needs to go here.)
Possible issues that are not repeatable:
- speaker not working on out bound calls? I made 30 test calls to my home phone and was not able to replicate this issue. Needs to be verified (see here)

So you installed both the HTC_IME.apk and the Clicker.apk? Did you do a adb push or a adb install?
Try and go into settings --> Language & Keyboard --> Touch Input --> Text Input?
I think its a force of habit with out really thinking to go there and calibrate but just going there may help.
Try that and let me know.

Thanks, but I really can't take to much credit. Its a "Pick and Pull" from several ROMs. This one actually came from our GSM Brothers and then I used the CDMA tricks in this form to make it work.
I keep watching and playing with the Google Nexus Dumps. I would really like to get one of them up and running.
Based on your posting and replies I assume you are re-using the 2.6.27 kernel like the other roms?

Wow thats allot in a little space.
What I gather is that it originally booted, then after trying to install via droid explorer and then astro it now just dies after the lockscreen.
I am not sure where to start. I would just say to do a full wipe, then a clean install. Then if you have the sdk try the ADB install method as Cynanogen's post talks about.
I am working on trying to get the stock Android keyboard to work. If we can figure out that then we don't have to mess with the HTC one.

Yeah, actually some of your work if I remember correctly, thats why its got the same issues. My first goal when I built this for my self was to get past the blasted google bits sync loop. The more I worked into it the more I moved on to the 2.0.1 build with some of your stuff in it.
Your welcome to anything I have learned, its really not my work.

me too, but i have to admit... there is a difference from my tab for the first 10 minutes it boots compared to after i open a couple apps. even if i try to kill all running processes with a task manager and it says it closed them all. it slows just a tiny bit
but all in all i wouldn't change a thing about my gtab other than light up soft keys and a different lcd. but even those aren't a big issue
i tried this lagfix and it failed for me. i could not install the ext2 tools in order to run the lagfix. however this lagfix apk has the onclick root on it as well as the lagfix, pretty handy if it worked.

To use Titanium Backup, your GTab needs rooted.
Best way is:
- install TnT-Lite from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=842004
* already rooted for you.
Be sure to read all instructions posted in 1st page.
Hope this help.

[ROM] NFX-Shift STOCK Version 2.0 deodexed/odex updated 3/19/11

Updated: 3/19/2011
NFX-Shift.Deodex.STOCK.V.2.0
NFX-Shift.Odex.STOCK.V.2.0
This will not wipe your data, ALthough always best to start fresh!
- [Kernel] [GPL] Sense 2.6.32.21 OC/UV 1.51GHZ (CFS-Smartass-TUN) Thanks to bcnice20
- Default CPU clock will be 1.0ghz with ondemand , changable thru setcpu or if you want to edit the kernel directly. I have never been a fan of the overclocking apps as once the system is boot they need to wait for the SU to grant permissions for the settings. this way it is from boot.
Remove the script below to use setcpu
If you would like to change the defaults in the kernel just look in system/etc/init.d/ 80screenstate_scaling
echo 245760 > /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_min_freq
echo 1209600 > /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_max_freq
System Currently boot at 1.2 ghz with the script. if you have issues with this speed remove the sript and reboot. This will allow for the settings in the kernel to boot at 1ghz.
- Unlocked 3G USB tethering & Sprint Hotspot - no need for any other apks aka wired or wireless tether
- Read ahead fixed to 256k for the SDcard (speed fix) - should increase the read times from sdcard

Sweet! Glad to see you developing roms even b4 you've received your shift lol. Downloading now

good deal nand welcome to the shift. ha ha. bout to test this out know. ive tried out some of your hero stuff and seen the good work you've done.
I did a full wipe before flashing, and it booted up, but does not seem to have a functioning launcher. If I turn the screen off, and back on, I see the lock screen, but swiping down results in a black screen.
Make sure you have cache wiped too, sounds like maybe a corupt download.
I've been running this for four days and have not had a single hiccup.

if you can could you get me a ddms or logcat while booting so I can see what may be causing this issue for you.
As I said previously I dont have amy shift yet so I can only possibly track down the issue if you can grab a logcat or ddms report of the issue.
Thanks
glad to see the thread is getting active... will download and post feedback

I apologize, I already did a nandroid recover. Everything went through fine on the logcat, but after boot it kept giving me an error in regard to wakelock not responding. I probably had a bad download. I will try again this weekend (have to go meet the wife right now) and let you know the results. I am really excited to run this, so I am sure I can get it to work eventually. Thanks a lot for your work on this.
Running well for me, and I'm using bcnice20's oc-uv sense kernel with it ... albeit according to quadrant a little slower than the stock odex rom with the same kernel.

Well that is great then considering odex vs deodexed, cause we all now that there is about a 15 to 20% loss with deodexing a rom. Once I get my shift I will odex and really get into slimlineing the rom, just like the HeroC
Man it is great to see you here!! When I sold my hero, the guy wanted to keep your ROM that I was running on it. Paypal is about to see some action once I try this out.

Which version of quadrant? 1.1.5?

Great to see you here man! I'm super stoked we got some good developers on the shift now. I cant wait to see what comes next
Any way to add the power widgets like CM6 had on the pull down menu? I loved having all my stuff soo easy to turn on/off. Usually I didnt like Sense because it slowed down the phone but the shift is super fast with it. I'm looking forward to the odex version your planning on making. Thanks for your hard work!

Actually 1.1.1. I tried standard edition from market (1.1.7) and get about the same (a little less first run). I don't have 1.1.5 to try.

Yes there is a mod for it in the EVO forum, just need to port it to this, but cant do it yet till I actually get the phone so I can test
I am new to all this rooting and installing new roms, so please bare with me. I have downloaded this rom twice to my computer, but can not get it to install on my phone. I have extracted the file to my sd card, did a data wipe on phone, went to install zip from sd, but cannot "find" and install new rom. Any suggestions? At least I have found out how to do recovery.

Don't extract it, leave it as a zip to flash

No Difference in Supercharger V6

Has anyone tried the supercharger V6 on the sidekick 4g? Is it me or do I just not notice nay significant difference on the sidekick 4g? My friend has tried it on his Galaxy S2 and I have noticed its gotten alot more snappy, but mine just seems the same as it was before.
I'm gonna second your post.. I actually wanted to ask the same thing.. I got supercharger v6 a few days ago too and haven't noticed any difference at all.. I saw some posts about people saying it improved their performance a lot. I have the widget and it seems like its working, i'm getting the right minfrees and all that.. Tried aggressive 1. but it doesn't seem to be any faster or anything.. but it wasn't that bad to begin with so maybe thats why?

first of all, you need supercharger update 9, secondly, if you are on stock firmware and running the boot script to make supercharger permanent, it doesnt really make it permanent. if you are on stock firmware, you need a root file browser that allows you to remount system as read/write and also allows you to create new folders. browse to /system/etc, remount system as read/write, create a new folder, and name it init.d and supercharge will then be completely permanent and have total system integration. if you are on a custom rom, you should already have init.d but you can check to make sure. i am running update 9 on stock firmware and i ran options 7 and 13. it makes a huge difference.

Are the instructions the same when running the update9? Do you have to remove the .pdf extension like removing .txt in update8 before running script or does it not matter? Also what rom are you running?
not sure about the pdf extension. go to the supercharge thread and look for update 9. when you download it, you will figure it out. i just cant remember. see my signature for what firmware i am on.
yeah, I was running gingerclone v2.. but it was already running smooth and not slow so maybe thats why i didn't really notice? I'm on glorious overdose 2 now though so I'm going to try again on that. I also think I was using update 7, not 9 so maybe that will make a difference when I put the right one now..
