Latency: slow pings on ICS - HTC Sensation

I have noticed the higher latency for sure on the ICS ROMs. I tried ExtremeSensation and InsertCoin, and had the same issue with both. I was around 85ms on GB, and around 160ms, or higher on ICS. I tried stock radios/RILs on ICS as well, and the issue persisted.
This needs to get fixed. Everyone seems to be overlooking it, but several people have said they have the same problem.

not the biggest problem in the world...you can live with it...for now

Yeah. I noticed that too. For me, I typically get around 45-55ms on gingerbread. Ics measures around 110-120. Not a deal breaker but annoying for sure
Sent from my HTC Sensation Z710e using Tapatalk

Yeah, it's almost a deal breaker for me. I have my older MyTouch 4G sitting right here next to me, and it's latency and speed is fine. It's signal does not fluctuate either, like this new Sensation does on ICS.

55??? Mines terrible, 280+ and sometimes it will just sit there, then say my ping is 1500!!

Another vote, mine's a ***** as well.

Yeah, I went back to a Gingerbread ROM, and all was well. Not sure what's up with Ice Cream Sandwich ROMs.

I have slow pings with a Moto G that I bought a couple of months ago. I had a suspicion that the pings might be slow even before I bought it. So I tested, and as you can see from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=51354213#post51354213, my pings are slow too.
There are two problems with the pings:
mean delay
variance of delay
Both are excessive. Both of these are problematic for certain types of application. Both of these are things that easy to not-get-wrong by a software developer with experience in computer networking. Makes one wonder.
What worries me is that the communication path of general Android applications might suffer the same deficiencies.
Can anyone ping their device and check the delay? Over Wifi with strong signal, you should be getting sub 10 ms times, easily.

Say Hello to a Confused and Recent HTC Convert

I just finally dumped Big Red and came over to AT&T (combined contracts with my wife). I'm going from the HTC Incredible and purchased the Sammy Captivate. I was very active back in the Dinc forum, and would consider myself "Advanced" - I did some development, but wasn't yet at the level of ROM Cooking.
I got over here to the Captivate - I'm confused as hell. I've followed my own advice and read forum after forum after forum before posting anything - the Cappy just seems like Greek to me.
Here's what I'm picking up:
1. GPS is spotty, but not for everyone. Mine has always been dead on, but then again I'm not a first-adopter of the Galaxy S. Perhaps it was a batch issue?
2. ROMs seem significantly harder to cook for the Cappy. I see a bunch of leaks from the Froyo build, but it looks half-done at best. Don't get me wrong, I'm running Cognition and I love it for day to day use. I had read a bit online about the lag issues, but I didn't imagine they would be *this* prominent even after rooting and removing bloatware.
That's about it, really. I'm checking back in the forums every day. I'm loving the hardware on this phone - the screen is fantastic, and when the Cappy is fast it's FAST. But I've gotta admit I'm fairly dissapointed thus far with some of the User Experience pieces. The Samsung overlay has some nice attributes (the swiping in Contacts is great, for one), but there are other bits that are wholly frustrating about this phone (WHY would they make the buttons at the bottom time out before the screen, forcing you to touch the screen to get the buttons lit up again??).
OH! And why did they switch "Home" and "Menu"??? I realize Samsung is a global company and that not all of their products are released Stateside, but it's still annoying.
I must apologize, this has turned from a general "how do you do" to a vent-fest. I'd love to hear from any experienced and new users alike. Thanks!
hi I just came from HTC too, I had the Aira, but I broke it. When I went to the ATT store, I saw the Captivate and decided to try it. I'm with you -- the hardware specs are great, screen is beautiful, camera is better than aria, etc. But the programming is lame, especially compared to aria. I haven't had an issue with the GPS, but there are a tons of software issues on this phone, such as wifi just not working at times, the exchange email client almost unusable, lack of languages, lag, and those lights at the bottom like you mentioned. HTC sense is wonderful.
I'm also having a hard time figuring out all of the ROMS and etc out there. I did install one of the lag fixes and it's made quite a difference. I also installed the HPUSA thing but I don't know how to tell if it's actually working. Anyway, install the lag fix, it will definitely help. And if anyone knows of a fix for the wifi, I'd love to know what it is (One would expect that it would just work out of the box).
What WiFi issues are you having? I can't even "see" any WPA networks. I have a Verizon FiOS router and can't see it because I'm assuming the WPA security. I tried switching to WEP though and still couldn't see it. I've search all over the web and XDA and can't seem to find anyone complaining of the same issue.

I haven't had any problems with Wifi and use WPA. I can see all of my networks (which are G, not N).
The button thing is kind of annoying, so I agree with you there. My GPS has been hit or miss, but I bought this phone used, so I'm not sure if it was a first batch model or not.
There's not much in the way of ROMs. There's stock and leaks, then there's Cognition and Eugene's, and that's about it. All of those are based on a leak or stock build, so they'll usually contain the same problems as the stock/leak build.
We're supposed to be getting a CyanogenMOD ROM sometime, or at least be able to port it...but I'm sure they can't do anything until Samsung releases the source for Froyo.
Anoter HTC convert here, but I came from the Pure.
GPS is definitely an issue. Mine improved with the OTA update to JH7. Its still not as accurate at highway speeds as the HTC.
HTC sense Rules compared to the UI in the Cappy. Im hoping that improvements will come as 2.2 is more widely adopted.

That has NOTHING to do with Samsung. At all.
Do a little research and you'll see almost every phone has a different arrangement of the four buttons.
Just going to answer the part of your question about the lag and lag fixes.
The lag on the galaxy s phones is the result of samsung using rfs file system - rfs has a much slower input/output read/write than ext* file systems generally found on linux distros. This is the lag that is being refereed to in the lag fixes.
so as long as samsung continues to put out official roms with rfs file system there will always be an opportunity for a "lag fix" with ext2 (i.e. ryanza's OCLF) or ext4 (i.e. voodoo).
hello_______
GPS is hit or miss, but on the FroYo leak it has gotten much better, unfortunately Samsung released the phones with brand new hardware and apparently didn't test...
The lag is as mentioned another Samsung fubar along the lines of using an inferior file system.
I think the reason for lack of ROMs is most people are waiting for FroYo to launch. We just got our first beta build leaked this week. Once source for the new kernel gets released, we should see a lot more activity as far as that goes.

I've done a lot of research, and I alluded to that point in my post. Survey the *American* market and empirically you will see that of the slate Android phones, most have the buttons in the order Home, Menu, Back, Search. And I would argue that it has everything to do with Samsung - unless you're implying that someone else designed the layout of the buttons on their device. After all, they are the reason the European variant of the i9000 has three buttons like the X10, correct?

Thanks, dayv. That's a good explanation and gives me some idea of where to go from here.
As for an update, turns out the WiFi issues were strictly hardware. After putting in a bridge with my FiOS router and still not getting any improvement, I took it back to Best Buy and swapped it out. Connected the second I got home. Unfortunately, the touch buttons were totally borked and I had to do a battery pull three times in 20 minutes because apparently the buttons would "touch themselves when they thought of me." In other words, you could see the buttons flash on and off, feel the haptic go crazy, and all kinds of strange stuff on the screen. Yet another swapout and I'm good to go.
I also installed Eugene's Frankin-Twiz last night - it really helped improve just about everything. Hardly any lag at all and I'm liking the associated themes available. GPS on my new device works great too.

I imagine we can also add to this that the Captivate has only been out for not quite 3 months if I recall correctly. So between the newness and people holding their breath for Froyo I could understand people's hesitancy to invest a lot of time and energy in making a soon to be outdated ROM.
came from a tilt2 which is/was? still trying to develop android..it was pretty good but wow i can never go back to windows phone after that mess. freggin love this captivate thou...when it doesnt break lol. ive never had a phone that i seem to get ALL the known issues with and still decide to stick with getting a new one instead. I miss sense somedays but overall i still am willing to stick with a less "bogged down" OS that i can practically do the same with. if i can make the phone do what i need faster then screw the pretty screen gadgets lol

I'm sorry but I to came from the htc aria, awesome little phone. I bought the aria because I thought the sense ui was pretty awesome. After using Cyanogen mods on the aria and playing with other launchers and now playing with tw launcher, sorry but sense ui is crap and for noobs . I got over the whole sense ui about a week of owning the aria and wasn't able to use it after adw and launcher pro.
Sorry had to post it. I just don't feel you can use an androids phone ui to bash another phone. I have only seen a few who use any androids phone stock ui any way and I'm one of them and as basic as it is it still makes sense ui look a babies toy.

Curious because I'm considering returning the captivate for the aria (other than the Screen the Captivate Really Kinda Sucks). If you had it to do again would you pick the Aria over the Captivate?

Not a chance lol the aria is awesome for its size but doesn't come close to the captivate , that's just my imo though. Only problem I have had with captivate is gps and I really don't use gps, so not that big of deal. The aria, like I said awesome for its size, just has to small of processor to do what the captivate can do. Most things lag on the aria games and movies almost un playable. I love my captivate.
I had bought an iphone4 for my wife to replace her old iphone. Well long story short , I turned a "i will not use anything else but iphone ! " the iphone 4 went back two weeks of having it cause of to many problems to we booth own captivates now and shes sold.

besides the gps.... i am very satisfied. here is why.....
I woke up this morning and opened allshare to stream music from my synology diskstation. Got in the car and loaded up bluetooth to my moto speakerphone/radio transmitter. Put my captivate in my proclipusa mount and Loaded up pandora to stream to my car stereo... Loaded up the navigation for testing purposes and was on my way...
Both worked without issue on the commute in.. rocking to guerrillla radio and limp bizkit. Got some tweets and emails... and the phone took it like... IS THAT ALL YOU GOT!!!!
My blackberry 9700 would have exploded and for sure the "r" key would have flew straight into my forehead... where then people would ask me why i have an R indented in my head... is it for Retard?
I rate the phone 95% out of 100%. If you really have that much to complain about then you will never be happy with any phone.....
p.s. - for people who have captivates that reboot or shutoff, that has to be a defect and you need to get it replaced. My phone has never rebooted or shutoff by itself.
p.s.s. Gps isn't great... but the phone does everything else i need really well.
rant over.

This has been a really stable rom with HSUPA enabled(no bluetooth issues) good GPS (for me) and a nice theme.
It is an international rom so all of the att crap is gone. No need for the sideloading crap.
I tried Cog beta 1,2, and 3 and F-T and I'm back to this rom. It's good for me until we get a good stable 2.2 rom.

That's an interesting question. The aria costs a lot less than the captivate. As far as hardware goes, the captivate is superior: 16 GB RAM, the screen is awesome, the speaker is better (ringtones sound nicer) and the quality of phone calls, at least for me, is a lot better than the aria. Oh and the camera is LOT better on the captivate. I haven't had issues with the GPS (the aria locked on a little faster, but captivate performs well). The issues with wireless for me are really frustrating, but others don't seem to have an issue (wireless sometimes works, sometimes doesn't even though it's connected, I have no idea why).
Based on my experience, I'd rather have the captivate. It definitely takes more tweaking than the aria but in the 1 week I've had it, I think I got everything worked out. I definitely liked the sense UI and email client on the aria, but I can live with the UI and stuff on the captivate considering how much better the hardware is.
If anyone has any idea about how to fix wireless, I'd really appreciate it.
Yeah I'm not gonna lie, we really don't have much of choice on at&t . To me we only have two choices right now Aria or captivate. If at&t got a htc equivalent to the captivate then I would have a hard choice .

From Inspire to Atrix back to Inspire :D

I really enjoyed the Inspire but I started to get all crazy reception issues where I couldnt make a call or receive sometimes. Anyone else having these issues? Someone at the att store said alot of ppl are complaining of this.
Yesterday I exchanged for the atrix and it felt a lil bit more snappy, nothing to wow me but I could make calls and receive, no issues at all. My main issue was it would hardly charge on usb from any pc I used, and it would get really hot trying so right there I said, this is going back. In less than 24hrs I was back at the AT&T store to get a new inspire.
I really dont want to have any reception issues, and I almost believe all the flashing roms, radios, kernels, I messed something up along the way. Heck, Im even scared to root now. I want to use the phone totally stock and make sure it works great whereever I am before I root even. I'm also wondering if rooting causes battery to drain quicker.
So I ask all you experienced Android users/developers. Am I right in believing that all the flashing I've done might of messed my reception? Even maybe rooting might have messed something up? If not, is there a way to make a complete backup right now, so I can go right back to this when I do begin to root and what not. I almost feel like the stock rom, when I went back to it and unrooted before I returned the last inspire made no difference. The new Inspire seems to hold a better signal now. So can I back up the current stock rom before I do anything?
Interested to hear what advice this drums up. I went from Atrix (painfully bad PenTile LCD, shamelessly locked down) to Inspire back to my old N1 because I got a few days of no signal and missed calls in the office. I read recently that there's some sort of leaked magical radio that fixes a lot of the issues, so I'm keeping an eye towards the Inspire. $20 at Costco is a worthy use of my contract upgrade.
Yeah, there are other phones coming down the pike. I'm stuck with AT&T and given this is an otherwise solid phone and how awesome HTC tech support has been with my N1 I don't want to go with another mfr. Also Optimus 3D has only 512MB RAM? WTF?
If you have patience, your issues will be ironed out. Inspire ROMs and development is still kind of early.
If you just be patient, GPS...reception....bugs....will all be a thing of the past. Both devices are excellent. HTC build quality and 'openness' is something to envy. Just relax, I think you made a wise choice.
Just out of curiosity, what rom were you running when you started having issues? I'm on stock with root and have yet to have any problems with gps or reception.

nailed my main problems right there (in bold)...
Nice to see you lingering in the inspire forums DG
I purchased the Inspire the day it came out and absolutely loved it. That one had major issues with the screen. It would not register my touch about 80% of the time. So I exchanged that one for another Inspire and the second one had all sorts of problems. Dropped calls, calls no received, no VM notification, random reboots, and of course the always popular, locked phone that required a battery pull.
At that point I just thought the Inspire was not that great of a phone so I exchanged for the Atrix. When the phone arrived I knew two seconds after it booted that I hated the phone. It felt cheap, it was tiny, and Motoblur reminded me too much of TouchWiz - which is a shame because the guts of the phone should have made it a monster but Moto has a long way to go with their Motoblur. Within 2 hours of getting the Atrix I took it back.
So, I am on my third Inspire and so far so good. No missed calls, dropped calls, texts, no reboots, no locks, no problems at all. Right now I am rooted running the stock rom. I have tried a few different roms - RCMiXHD_v5X, LeeDroid_HD v2.2.2, and Android Revolution 4G. I had GPS issues with LeeDroid and Revolution and data problems with RCMiXHD. The phone has performed pretty dang good with root+Stock so I will probably keep it that way. Hopefully a GB version will drop soon because I do like the extra features that brings.
Anyway, thats just my experience.
This thread is getting some good information placed in it, and a good OP as well.
My recommendation is that you follow the hack kit, but stick to ROMs based off of the Stock Inspire ROM for now. As much as I enjoy a UV/OC kernal, I can't say it's making a huge impact in my day-to-day use of this phone. I'm running AR 3.2, without any issues right now on the stock inspire radio, but my next flash will probably be a ROM like ClearDroid.
I also wish we had an easy stock backup procedure, but as far as i know we're stuck with the reflash + s-off combo.
As a side note: Where the heck did DG come from?! It's good to see you popping your head in here. I started with your Super-rooter and lived on Cognition and Perception for my Captivate.

I cant really recall as battery life hasnt been a huge issue for me on the inspire, but for everyone that has rooted their phone, would you say battery life improved or worsened? I'm probably going to root later on tonight.
Oh and why no 'one click' root/unroot scripts for the Inspire yet? Just wondering, because even the atrix had a one click root script.

Yeah I meant more of a legit release not a leaked version. I have tried RCMix and Adroid Revolution and had issues with both. Nothing major but enough for me to go back to stock.
I'm having an oposite dilemma.. I first bought the Atrix and then after i noticed a little lag when unlocking the device i bought the Inspire.. I had the Atrix for 2 weeks and i have had the Inspire for 1 week.
What i have noticed about the Inspire is that when I try to open a .doc file thats only 62kb large, its not nearly as smooth as the Atrix with the scrolling and double tapping to zoom in. I dont know why this is... 62kb is pretty small. When i had the Atrix, it opened the same file super fast and there was no lag at all..
Also, with websites like adultswim and phonedog which has a lot of flash, the Inspire lags quite a bit compared to the Atrix which has little to no lag.
Im very tempted to go back to the Atrix and just live with the little bit of lag when unlocking.. IDK what i should do..

Well good luck in your decision. I dont doubt the Atrix was a tad faster at some things left stock, but that wasnt a main concern for me as I know on the Inspire a rom here a kernel there can remedy that.
I've actually opened .doc and .xls files close to that size on a daily basis with no real lag issue. Then again I'm using Documents To Go, app I used from my Blackberry days. Works pretty smoothly.

I m running the rooted stock rom self-cleaned from the ATT bloat with TiBU in chuck norris mode... No problem with my GPS, no problem with the reception... battery life around one day of pretty intensive use... I notice altough I m not having issues as i mentioned the signal's strength displayed is always pretty low (2/3 on 5)...
I tried ClearDroid but since it was pretty much the same as my 'self-purified' stock i just got back to it...
I don't think the reception's issue was related to the rooting itself... some device is just kinda defective from factory...
In the end it boils down to personal preferences.
I had both and got rid of the Atrix for the Inspire because of screen size and its speedy as is out the box. Don't really see the need for a Dual CoreS unless I'm gonna shell out more cash for the laptop Which I see is pointless since I might as well lug around my Vaio i7. In the end I'm happy with the Inspires build quality and performance.

It depends on your needs/preferences. Specs wise, yes the Atrix might be better but the Atrix does have its issues as well which irked me enough to come back to the Inspire which I liked so much I'm willing to give it a second try. One thing is for sure, I cant see myself getting another Motorola device anytime soon. Been there a few times, and had bad experiences with their locked devices. HTC has been the better experience for me so far and I'm enjoying the Inspire more than I did the Atrix.
Very true about preference...I like the Inspire's size wouldn't want to go bigger. Many hate motor for locking down the BL....but it seems like HTC will be doing the same on future devices

Bugs: Sensation>G2X

I just bought one at Walmart yesterday and was going to decide whether or not to give it to my wife or keep it and give her the G2X. Needless to say, I can't do anything with it. After playing with it for 30 minutes it got hotter than any other phone I've ever used and then froze. After a reboot it worked for about 15 minutes and the second I opened up the market app it rebooted itself. I called T-Mobile and they can't do anything until the phone is officially released and Wal-Mart doesn't have anymore in stock since they only got 2 to begin with. All of the other local Wal-Marts didn't get any in. My only option is to return it for my money back which I will be doing tomorrow. In the end, I was lucky enough to get a G2X with no bugs but not lucky enough to get a Sensation with none.
G2X - 1
Sensation - 0
Side note: In the 30 minutes I had to play with the Sensation, I already figured out I would have been giving it to my wife. It is not as fast as the G2X and it's clear that Sense 3.0 is bogging it down. The internet browser is also no where near as fast as the G2X. Don't get me wrong, it will be a good upgrade from her MyTouch Slide but it's not a upgrade to the G2X (if you got one without bugs).
I've been using a Sensation for two days now and I have yet to have any bugs. My only complaint is the bluetooth voice dialing doesn't work natively and the internet seems to run a little slower than the G2X. But I have found it is definitely much more stable out of the box than the G2X. I have had the phone running now for 2 days without any issues. When I bought the G2X my phone had already rebooted a few times in that same amount of time.

Well hopefully the next one I buy is big free. I've been reading over the Sensation forum the past couple of days and it looks like I'm not the only one with major issues. Like I said, I was lucky enough to get a working G2X. Guess you were just lucky enough to get a working Sensation.
Whats your take on the speed of the device? I definitely noticed lag in the UI and it was noticeably slower than the G2X. I didn't get a chance to play any games before mine locked up but I would like to know how it performs in that area. I don't expect the Snapdraggon to perform as well as the Tegra II since it is built off of the old A8 architecture while the Tegra II is built on the new A9 but I would like my wife to be able to play her games with no stutter. Have you played any games on it and if so which ones and how did they perform?
Well for now...I love my g2x....I will get the sensation when its well mature in the scene...the g2x still young...

Hello, good to knoe man. I have been really happy with my phone.
On a side note, you should probably change the title. Is a little misleading. I actually thought you meant that Sensation was less buggy.

I haven't really seen a lot of major issues being posted over on the Sensation forums. The bug threads that I've seen have only had minor things in it. Anyways, to answer your question I don't notice any lag. What I did notice is that there are a lot more animations on the Sensation than on the G2X. Those animations make the phone feel slower than the G2X. For example when you press the home button, the fade in animation that takes you to the home screen is slower than the quick little effect that happens when you press the home button on the G2X. I changed my animation setting on my Sensation to "some animations" so that I didn't have as much eye candy and had a little bit better speed. I noticed when I set it to "no animations" I didn't see any difference between it and the G2X. I put up a thread with a bit more of an in depth comparison between the two phones. Check it out, perhaps it may be of some help for you.
As for gaming, I've yet to do any real 3d gaming besides Nova (which ran perfectly fine).

As for the major bugs I have read about in multiple forums, they are as fallows:
Display has a yellowish tint
Rebooting
Freezing
Locking up when using the camera
Getting hot
Wifi and Cell signal dropping when holding the phone in landscape
During some games you get screen tearing
From my 30 minute experience I thought the display looked good. I didn't have the yellowish tint. As for the other bugs, the only one I experienced was the locking up, getting hot and rebooting. I didn't get a chance to use the camera or use the phone in landscape. I will test all of these things when I get it but the signal degradation seems to be pretty major. There a thread dedicated to it on there forums and also a blog entry about it on GSM Arena.
I'm aware of GSM Arena article..they have a thread about it in the Sensation forum...but also in the same thread nobody is really having that issue, and I haven't been able to replicate it either. All in all I think it's safe to say that the G2X definitely has more issues than the Sensation. They may eventually get fixed but as it stands now, it has more issues. In the same two days I've been experimenting with the Sensation, my G2X has reboot itself a few times..and I won't get into the battery life lol.

Actually in the Sensation forum multiple people have also stated that they are getting dust particles under their screen. To me that is a really huge problem.

I had this happen on 3 of my Nexus Ones. I dunno what the hell HTC is doing, but something isn't right.

My gf has the HTC aria from at&t and it has voice search but it doesn't work with voice dialing. If you say "call wife mobile" on her phone, it just does a Google search.
It does know map and text I believe but I think it's just a sense thing.

Try this on her phone. It sounds like the same thing. It's stupid that HTC left it out.

EP4P is super solid, I'm shocked that GB hasn't been pushed out officially

This version is amazing and super stable. I can't imagine why it hasn't been pushed out officially...

EE4 wasn't a great modem either. Darn VIA radio.
But the GB builds have an issue with noises in phone calls that is still there in EP4P, if VZW is also seeing that in testing that could hold it up. And if they plan an ICS release for the phone Samsung might not try too hard to fix it - they obviously haven't been able to do so yet.

+1 The noise happens to me on any 2.3 rom, hopefully it's one of the issues they're trying to resolve before releasing gingerbread, though I hate to be part if the reason it's being held up

i think that something is wrong with my phone. It does not like any custom roms. It freezes and acts up often. Once i put the stock froyo or gbread it flies and works perfectly fine..... And gbread 2.3.5 and 2.3.6 were solid with no issues so far.
I think its the modem. I had my first static incall today after running the 2.3.6 leak for a week.
Never had that issue on froyo roms.

There are some problems with this build as well. It seems to mostly be with the radio, echoing what people have said here. I've had a couple times where I could no longer send/receive SMS and had to reboot (where it immediately started working again).
There's some other weird things going on with the I/O. I use PowerAmp for music and I'm getting strange skips and pauses that I never had before. Could just be my configuration, but I'm still running pretty lean.
The latest rumor is that the OTA is happening on the 29th. That and $3.49 will get you a McRib.
GB is alright. They need to fix the freeze issue that has been on quite a few GB leaks. It doesn't happen that much on EP4P but it's still there. The modems on EP3 were great in the sense that the signal was SO much better, it obtained/held 4g with such ease. Then I upgraded to the EP4 modems and i lose my 4g signal like i did on EE4 but my 3g is actually usable now. Before the 3g speeds were so TERRIBLY slow i could never dream of browsing the web on it. These speeds are reasonable and i think these modems are the best so far. They need to combine EP3 and EP4 modems to make a solid, stable 4g connection but a very fast 3g connection when it does drop down. Ontop of all that they still need to fix the ****ty voice issue on all GB versions. EE4 was great with this but the GB modems make the voice quality sound like crap.
So, all in all, even though GB is clearly no where near ready to be launched i still just want them to push it anyway because that means GB source code which means CM7 which means CM9(if we get a dev on it)
I feel as the OP feels. As far as a bad radio, I guess I'm just lucky. I haven't had issues with data loss, crackling noise, Bluetooth problems, or anything else. This phone has been darn near perfect since I got it. The only real complaint I have (which really isn't a complaint) is battery consumption. I wish it was a tad better but I manage just fine. Oh, I do wish there was more memory too. I haven't been able to play a couple games because of low memory. Battery and memory are my only real issues at this point. Still, I'm overall very happy with the Charge and would have no problem staying with it if I didn't have an upgrade available.

The modem is better than before. I'm not saying the modem is good or ready yet, but it is working better than any of the last 2 or 3 that I've tried / used.
I sure hope they don't screw up the O/S portion or give up completely because they radio is crap.

Where did you hear that bro?
This release is solid
I was sick of waiting so I flashed this ROM to my phone and I have had the same results as the op. The phone is so responsive and snappy. It is like a new phone. I used to experience numerous data drops before and now, maybe a few in the last ten days. I have not had any of the static/call issues others have had. GPS is still slow to lock. Download GPS fix from the market and run it before you use the GPS...it helps IMO.
My battery life has improved since porting this release. I am a moderate user (phone calls, text, facebook, twitter, occasional GPS) and I get an entire day from my phone (7:00 am - 11:30 pm). I am sure streaming movies and gaming would cut it down significantly but the casual user will notice a big improvement in battery life.
Again, this is just my personal experience.
I agree that the latest version is awesome.
I guess I am really lucky as I have never had the slightest problem with data, phone call quality or anything else. My phone setup the way it is runs faster & smoother than my bosses Bionic.
The ONLY thing I would change if I could would be the poor battery life, but that's a fact of life with these huge screens etc.

No problem with my Modem. Maybe its your Charge? The leak has been solid for me.

[Q] Signal/Reception on ICS (4.0.3)

So let me start off by saying I've used both stock Gingerbread, and ICS probably about equal time each so I'm used to the signal behaviours of each.
My signal was always bad where I am at University and all of my flat mates had great signal (3G, HSPDA). I took my phone in for repair and they replaced the main board, they also reinstalled Gingerbread, even though I had already S-ON'd unbranded etc etc.
My signal was great and I could use my phone properly again, internet everywhere and it was amazing.
Now I have my new SD card and I've just rerooted S-OFF'd etc and now my signal is playing up. I thought well hey if ICS is coming out soon why not just install it now anyway, because if my signal is bad on ICS i'll know it.
My question is what is your signal like since upgrading to ICS, if you have that is. I'm averaging 2/5 bars of HSPDA whereas before I was getting 2/4 HSPDA, and the overall loading is slower.
I'm running latest Insert Coin with the firmware from the user-friendly firmware thread.
Any help/tips or insight on the matter is greatly appreciated, also this is my first post so I'm sorry if I missed something.
tl;dr, since upgrading to ICS signal is crap, what's your signal like if you run ICS.
Edit 1: Done some things and found stuff out.
It seems to be for sure that ICS is to blame for this, although I'm getting weird results. I installed the ROM from MrT's (I think that was his name) and my signal did improve slightly, from 0-2 asu up to 6-8 asu, although it still fluctuates. I've tried ARHD and IC both have bad signal (definitely NOT the developers fault I was just saying).
I am gonna try the OTA next and see what the difference is. I mustn't be the only person who has much worse signal on ICS. There is zero point reverting to S-ON and going to GB, because we'll all be getting ICS this week or next anyway.
Will keep thread update in case anyone else has similar issues that they wish to fix.
Edit 2: I reverted to stock GB and then used the OTA file so now I'm at official stock ICS untouched. The signal is improved although still not as good as GB. I will wait until the release and see if I receive another update and then edit the OP again.
I also have bad reception and voice calls bad sound on ICS , I didn't use gb so I can't know the difference but on ics is crapy
Bought mine used, and the seller had just s-offed it. Ever since I've had it, all radio reception has been terrible in comparison to my N1, the worst being bluetooth, closely followed by wifi. Cell/data reception is acceptable but still not as good as the N1. I've just ordered a "new" back cover from Ebay in the hope that it's a hardware/antenna issue, I have reason to believe it might be based on the erratic nature of the bluetooth problems.
Should have mentioned first, I'm not running a 4.0 rom yet, I've been flipping between the original T-Mobile Sense g/b rom and CM7. Bluetooth's bad on both, but I've got a sneaking suspicion that wifi is better on the Sense rom, although that might be my imagination.
Thanks for your replies guys.
I will try installing the OTA file, maybe it has something different to the firmware and ROM I am using, it's worth a try anyway.
It's also worth noting that signal does go down upon picking up the phone into my hand. Right now it has 3/5 HSPDA but when I pick it up in my hand, 5 inches higher than it was, the signal drops to 1/5.
I changed firmware to 3.32 and it's little beter now. I think it's radio software problem

Yeah I'm using 3.32 but it's actually worse. I've tried a few different versions I've found around the forum and they're all the same. Signal is fine when not being used but goes down when I use it or hold it in my hand.
I hope the official OTA is not like this or I will have to send it in for repairs again or get a new phone altogether.

Thanks for sharing, how much worse is it? For example with me I used to get about 7-10 asu in network section of settings, now its 0-2.
I guess I will try to cope until it is officially out for the Sensation in the UK and then after I can go into the shop and send it in for repair (second time).
I have the same problem before I used to get 2-3megabytes on speed test and now I'm getting half a megabyte and from the same place in my room where I used to have full 4 bars now I have 4/5 bars and I can't even buffer YouTube video
Sent from my HTC Sensation using xda premium
I have to say that my reception is worse on ICS. I was using gingerbread on sensation, from new, for about a month before I made any changes to my phone (root, s-off etc.) I would get a constant full 4 bar reception, it would never drop. Now on ICS, signal strength flits between 3 and 4 bars frequently, sometimes dropping to 2 or even 1 very ocassionaly. It is pretty annoying.
YES. i am experiencing the same exact problem. i have to say ics has been pretty disappointing. my signal in my room used to be 1-3 with an average of 2. Now its the same, but wit frequent drops to 0. Cmon. crappy browser, bad signal, isnt this supposed to be final version?
ok my receiption is worse at my office.. Not only worse can describe but i kinda suffer cuz of my connection. I think its related to the radio and i should try another one cuz its really annoying
im on ics, suffered the same fate, maybe this is due to DEATH GRIP?

Obviously I can't speak for everyone, but it is definitely not due to death grip with me. I can just leave the phone stationary, not even touching it and I can see the signal strength bars going up and down. I would really like to know what is causing it. I used to have perfect signal on Gingerbread.

i just wish its the ICS problem... i really love the phone, but im a little bit dissapointed as what i see on the google regarding death grip.
Same problem in my S2. I'm in a place which is like a Faradays cage, so signal fluctuates from 0 to 4. My new phone improved performance a lot because signal was fluctuating more quickly. I thought it was the hardware, I was very happy, but after updating to ICS it happened again. I think it's a kind of watchdog for signal, which is slower in ICS than GB. So should be a way to speed it. I decided to go back to GB but I can't: factory reset doesn't return phone to 2.3.5
