Say Hello to a Confused and Recent HTC Convert

I just finally dumped Big Red and came over to AT&T (combined contracts with my wife). I'm going from the HTC Incredible and purchased the Sammy Captivate. I was very active back in the Dinc forum, and would consider myself "Advanced" - I did some development, but wasn't yet at the level of ROM Cooking.
I got over here to the Captivate - I'm confused as hell. I've followed my own advice and read forum after forum after forum before posting anything - the Cappy just seems like Greek to me.
Here's what I'm picking up:
1. GPS is spotty, but not for everyone. Mine has always been dead on, but then again I'm not a first-adopter of the Galaxy S. Perhaps it was a batch issue?
2. ROMs seem significantly harder to cook for the Cappy. I see a bunch of leaks from the Froyo build, but it looks half-done at best. Don't get me wrong, I'm running Cognition and I love it for day to day use. I had read a bit online about the lag issues, but I didn't imagine they would be *this* prominent even after rooting and removing bloatware.
That's about it, really. I'm checking back in the forums every day. I'm loving the hardware on this phone - the screen is fantastic, and when the Cappy is fast it's FAST. But I've gotta admit I'm fairly dissapointed thus far with some of the User Experience pieces. The Samsung overlay has some nice attributes (the swiping in Contacts is great, for one), but there are other bits that are wholly frustrating about this phone (WHY would they make the buttons at the bottom time out before the screen, forcing you to touch the screen to get the buttons lit up again??).
OH! And why did they switch "Home" and "Menu"??? I realize Samsung is a global company and that not all of their products are released Stateside, but it's still annoying.
I must apologize, this has turned from a general "how do you do" to a vent-fest. I'd love to hear from any experienced and new users alike. Thanks!

hi I just came from HTC too, I had the Aira, but I broke it. When I went to the ATT store, I saw the Captivate and decided to try it. I'm with you -- the hardware specs are great, screen is beautiful, camera is better than aria, etc. But the programming is lame, especially compared to aria. I haven't had an issue with the GPS, but there are a tons of software issues on this phone, such as wifi just not working at times, the exchange email client almost unusable, lack of languages, lag, and those lights at the bottom like you mentioned. HTC sense is wonderful.
I'm also having a hard time figuring out all of the ROMS and etc out there. I did install one of the lag fixes and it's made quite a difference. I also installed the HPUSA thing but I don't know how to tell if it's actually working. Anyway, install the lag fix, it will definitely help. And if anyone knows of a fix for the wifi, I'd love to know what it is (One would expect that it would just work out of the box).

What WiFi issues are you having? I can't even "see" any WPA networks. I have a Verizon FiOS router and can't see it because I'm assuming the WPA security. I tried switching to WEP though and still couldn't see it. I've search all over the web and XDA and can't seem to find anyone complaining of the same issue.

I haven't had any problems with Wifi and use WPA. I can see all of my networks (which are G, not N).
The button thing is kind of annoying, so I agree with you there. My GPS has been hit or miss, but I bought this phone used, so I'm not sure if it was a first batch model or not.
There's not much in the way of ROMs. There's stock and leaks, then there's Cognition and Eugene's, and that's about it. All of those are based on a leak or stock build, so they'll usually contain the same problems as the stock/leak build.
We're supposed to be getting a CyanogenMOD ROM sometime, or at least be able to port it...but I'm sure they can't do anything until Samsung releases the source for Froyo.

Anoter HTC convert here, but I came from the Pure.
GPS is definitely an issue. Mine improved with the OTA update to JH7. Its still not as accurate at highway speeds as the HTC.
HTC sense Rules compared to the UI in the Cappy. Im hoping that improvements will come as 2.2 is more widely adopted.

That has NOTHING to do with Samsung. At all.
Do a little research and you'll see almost every phone has a different arrangement of the four buttons.

Just going to answer the part of your question about the lag and lag fixes.
The lag on the galaxy s phones is the result of samsung using rfs file system - rfs has a much slower input/output read/write than ext* file systems generally found on linux distros. This is the lag that is being refereed to in the lag fixes.
so as long as samsung continues to put out official roms with rfs file system there will always be an opportunity for a "lag fix" with ext2 (i.e. ryanza's OCLF) or ext4 (i.e. voodoo).

GPS is hit or miss, but on the FroYo leak it has gotten much better, unfortunately Samsung released the phones with brand new hardware and apparently didn't test...
The lag is as mentioned another Samsung fubar along the lines of using an inferior file system.
I think the reason for lack of ROMs is most people are waiting for FroYo to launch. We just got our first beta build leaked this week. Once source for the new kernel gets released, we should see a lot more activity as far as that goes.

I've done a lot of research, and I alluded to that point in my post. Survey the *American* market and empirically you will see that of the slate Android phones, most have the buttons in the order Home, Menu, Back, Search. And I would argue that it has everything to do with Samsung - unless you're implying that someone else designed the layout of the buttons on their device. After all, they are the reason the European variant of the i9000 has three buttons like the X10, correct?

Thanks, dayv. That's a good explanation and gives me some idea of where to go from here.
As for an update, turns out the WiFi issues were strictly hardware. After putting in a bridge with my FiOS router and still not getting any improvement, I took it back to Best Buy and swapped it out. Connected the second I got home. Unfortunately, the touch buttons were totally borked and I had to do a battery pull three times in 20 minutes because apparently the buttons would "touch themselves when they thought of me." In other words, you could see the buttons flash on and off, feel the haptic go crazy, and all kinds of strange stuff on the screen. Yet another swapout and I'm good to go.
I also installed Eugene's Frankin-Twiz last night - it really helped improve just about everything. Hardly any lag at all and I'm liking the associated themes available. GPS on my new device works great too.

I imagine we can also add to this that the Captivate has only been out for not quite 3 months if I recall correctly. So between the newness and people holding their breath for Froyo I could understand people's hesitancy to invest a lot of time and energy in making a soon to be outdated ROM.

came from a tilt2 which is/was? still trying to develop android..it was pretty good but wow i can never go back to windows phone after that mess. freggin love this captivate thou...when it doesnt break lol. ive never had a phone that i seem to get ALL the known issues with and still decide to stick with getting a new one instead. I miss sense somedays but overall i still am willing to stick with a less "bogged down" OS that i can practically do the same with. if i can make the phone do what i need faster then screw the pretty screen gadgets lol

I'm sorry but I to came from the htc aria, awesome little phone. I bought the aria because I thought the sense ui was pretty awesome. After using Cyanogen mods on the aria and playing with other launchers and now playing with tw launcher, sorry but sense ui is crap and for noobs . I got over the whole sense ui about a week of owning the aria and wasn't able to use it after adw and launcher pro.
Sorry had to post it. I just don't feel you can use an androids phone ui to bash another phone. I have only seen a few who use any androids phone stock ui any way and I'm one of them and as basic as it is it still makes sense ui look a babies toy.

Curious because I'm considering returning the captivate for the aria (other than the Screen the Captivate Really Kinda Sucks). If you had it to do again would you pick the Aria over the Captivate?

Not a chance lol the aria is awesome for its size but doesn't come close to the captivate , that's just my imo though. Only problem I have had with captivate is gps and I really don't use gps, so not that big of deal. The aria, like I said awesome for its size, just has to small of processor to do what the captivate can do. Most things lag on the aria games and movies almost un playable. I love my captivate.
I had bought an iphone4 for my wife to replace her old iphone. Well long story short , I turned a "i will not use anything else but iphone ! " the iphone 4 went back two weeks of having it cause of to many problems to we booth own captivates now and shes sold.

besides the gps.... i am very satisfied. here is why.....
I woke up this morning and opened allshare to stream music from my synology diskstation. Got in the car and loaded up bluetooth to my moto speakerphone/radio transmitter. Put my captivate in my proclipusa mount and Loaded up pandora to stream to my car stereo... Loaded up the navigation for testing purposes and was on my way...
Both worked without issue on the commute in.. rocking to guerrillla radio and limp bizkit. Got some tweets and emails... and the phone took it like... IS THAT ALL YOU GOT!!!!
My blackberry 9700 would have exploded and for sure the "r" key would have flew straight into my forehead... where then people would ask me why i have an R indented in my head... is it for Retard?
I rate the phone 95% out of 100%. If you really have that much to complain about then you will never be happy with any phone.....
p.s. - for people who have captivates that reboot or shutoff, that has to be a defect and you need to get it replaced. My phone has never rebooted or shutoff by itself.
p.s.s. Gps isn't great... but the phone does everything else i need really well.

This has been a really stable rom with HSUPA enabled(no bluetooth issues) good GPS (for me) and a nice theme.
It is an international rom so all of the att crap is gone. No need for the sideloading crap.
I tried Cog beta 1,2, and 3 and F-T and I'm back to this rom. It's good for me until we get a good stable 2.2 rom.

That's an interesting question. The aria costs a lot less than the captivate. As far as hardware goes, the captivate is superior: 16 GB RAM, the screen is awesome, the speaker is better (ringtones sound nicer) and the quality of phone calls, at least for me, is a lot better than the aria. Oh and the camera is LOT better on the captivate. I haven't had issues with the GPS (the aria locked on a little faster, but captivate performs well). The issues with wireless for me are really frustrating, but others don't seem to have an issue (wireless sometimes works, sometimes doesn't even though it's connected, I have no idea why).
Based on my experience, I'd rather have the captivate. It definitely takes more tweaking than the aria but in the 1 week I've had it, I think I got everything worked out. I definitely liked the sense UI and email client on the aria, but I can live with the UI and stuff on the captivate considering how much better the hardware is.
If anyone has any idea about how to fix wireless, I'd really appreciate it.

Yeah I'm not gonna lie, we really don't have much of choice on at&t . To me we only have two choices right now Aria or captivate. If at&t got a htc equivalent to the captivate then I would have a hard choice .

Thanks for the tip! I've never met a ROM that I wouldn't reflash if something else came along. I will try it out later tonight. Do you happen to know if the Twiz mods for custom fonts will flash ok?

New Inspire, Wifi crackdown ??

Whats goin on guys, I havent posted in a long while mostly due to being busy as all hell and the fact that my TP2 is modded to the teeth and I was pretty much done, HOWEVER, after an epic 4 hour battle with ATT today I scored an Imagine for $50, nice.
Apperently ATT thinks they're smart and blocking WiFi tethering. I read the other posts but just to be totally clear, This DOES NOT apply to rooted devices correct?
My TP2 wireless tether works perfectly fine tested 5 mins ago and getting the inspire without wireless tether for free is a total deal breaker

There is a thread a little ways down that tells you how to do it on the stock unrooted rom. Any rooted ROM should already have it, as it is just an apn change.

I moved from the Atrix to the Inspire and I haven't looked back since. It feels just as snappy as the atrix did through the menus and installing or launching of apps. I've been running the CM nightlies and this device hasn't failed me yet. A few bugs and quirks here and there but nothing I couldn't fix or bypass with help from these forums. The Inspire is a great current generation device, and with the power user options to root it, overclock it (1.5+ ghz- screams through fancy screen transitions, games, and movies), underclock it (245 mhz-saves battery when the phone is in my pocket), and really just customize it as you see fit. It's a really good choice if you want those types of options available from your device. I really like my Inspire and I think you will too!

Did the atrix really feel snappy? When I tried it out in a store it was super slow just scrolling between home screens. I assumed this was due to MotoBlur being a steaming pile, haha.

Dude I originally got excited about the Atrix and the Tegra but then I saw it at best buy next to the inspire and I was immediately drawn to the larger screen.
Im pretty HTC loyal now, their devices are ass kicking, root ready, and well constructed. Ive dropped my TP2 down a flight of concrete steps and it just bounced and laughed.

Every atrix I have used was laggy as a mother while navigating android, but applications them self ran really fast (aka angry birds). adw and lp dont help it all that much either in my experience.
Just imagine what that thing could do with the right kernel and rom though The phone has such potential but is crippled by its maker.

nice i had a 3 hour battle with AT&T and got the inspire for 15 dollars i was a cappy user. decided to try out HTC still stock not yet rooted i did make my GoldCard. am having a slite hiss in my voice audio and not sure. i am going to stop by the store and see if a replacement has the same issue oh and the battery really stinks..

Yes the Atrix did feel snappy but only after I rooted it, installed Titanium backup and then froze motoblur and other bloatware apps. Installed Launcher Pro and it flew. But it wasn't enough. I moved on to the Inspire and I don't regret it at all!!!

[Q] I'm Indecisive: Thunderbolt or Incredible 2?

My Incredible is currently on its last leg...random reboots/shutdowns and I'm outside the warranty. I'm currently rooted, running CM7 and I love it (CM7 and my Inc). I don't flash roms everyday or even every week (really haven't changed since moving to CM) but I like having the flexibility to do so if I want. So the question is do I go with the Thunderbolt or the Incredible 2?
The 4G on the Thunderbolt would just be added feature to me...nothing I need. I looked at the Thunderbolt yesterday and it seemed bulky compared to my current Inc; before that I was set to buy the Thunderbolt. So now I'm struggling...do I get the Thunderbolt that has root or get the Inc2, which I like size wise but only has temp root (and hope full root comes along)?
Question: Rooted Thunderbolt or Temp Root (for now) Incredible 2?

Rooted/Unrooted shouldn't be an issue.. the Inc2 will have stable root for sure.
I am myself coming from the incredible.. (which too I loved).. but I don't regret going over to the TB. The TB looks damn good.. better than the incredible in my opinion.
The extra real estate comes in handy quite a bit when you are browsing or when you are typing.
4G is a HUGE factor for me. Now that I have 4G all around my area.. I can't imagine going back to 3G. Market updates on the go are a lot faster.. downloads are a lot faster and apps that depend on the internet are a lot snappier..... plus the fact that VZW is offering unlimited 4G for 29.99 sweetens the deal.. (not sure if that offer will last for long though).
The bulk factor of the TB that you are talking about..is something you'll get used to within a few days.. so it really is no biggie.. but of course it feels builky to you now because it is new... and you are still using your incredible... But trust me.. after a few days.. it'll feel right.

I've been reading the TB forums for a week, since I decided I needed a new phone, and it seems like there might be issues. I also asked some friends at Verizon what their thoughts were and they pretty much told me to steer clear of the TB for now due to buginess...has that been your experience? I don't expect to have some of the problems they mentioned since it most likely wouldn't stay stock for too long.

It depends on what you are running. The latest MR2 has been as stable as a ROM could be... battery life even with 4G is pretty decent... no random reboots.. 4G to 3G exchange is seamless.. and over all it is pretty stable.
Gingerbread on the other hand has memory issues, battery issues etc.. though over all it IS kinda stable with the newer radio..
I don't think the leaked GB RUU is as stable or efficient as the latest FRoyo.. and most of them out there are running GB mainly because of the sense 3.0 lockscreen and weather aspects that have been cooked into it (they ARE pretty cool).. but honestly for me.. the stock MR2 Froyo is rock solid and unbeatable.. and I can easily wait until a better GB RUU is dropped.
You have 2 weeks to try out a new phone anyways.. so get yourself a TB.. root it.. install the MR2 stock.. and see how you like it..
If you don't.. then return it back to stock and exchange your phone for something you'll like better.

Another thing that a lot of people don't really mention but has a huge impact on how you use your phone. 4g allows you to browse the internet, recieve emails, texts etc while youre talking on it. Kind of nice in some situations. I take full advantage of it.

excellent point.. but I believe it is possible only on 3G with the Thunderbolt (correct me if I am wrong).

Once you experience 4G .. you wouldn't wanna go back to 3G.. plus the fact that you are getting 4G for the same price from VZW (cheapest in the industry at the moment).. is too good a deal to pass over.
Also factor in the fact the verizon's LTE network.. is wayyy better than sprints WiMax's or AT&T (infact ATT even released a statement that their 4G is not as advanced as Verizon's).

I have the Tbolt and my son has the Inc2. Both have been kept stock (no rooting/roms/etc) and neither one of us have experienced any of the problems that others complain about in the forums, with one exception. Both of have occasional problems syncing multiple email accounts. We live in an area with excellent signal coverage so I don't think that is the issue.
I liked the (slightly) smaller size of the Inc2 better (coming from an Imagio) but have gotten used to the Tbolt. I now prefer the larger screen since it is a bit easier on my eyes. Both phone screens are clear and bright. The on-screen keyboard is easier (for my fat fingers) to use on the Tbolt since it is a bit larger.
The external buttons on the Inc2 are better. The ones on the Tbolt feel mushy but work ok.
Speed of the apps on both seems similar. There is, of course, a bigger memory card on the Tbolt.
Inc2 is global, Tbolt is not so if you travel out of country a lot that might be a consideration.
We live in a 4g area so we can compare network speeds. This is where the huge difference is. The Tbolt download speeds on 4g typically run at 20 to 35 mbps. The best the Inc2 (3g) gets is 2.5 mbps. We can download the same program at the same time, and I will be downloaded, installed, and playing long before my son is finished downloading. I didn't think I would care that much but the Tbolt is a real pleasure in that regard. Unfortunately battery life on the Tbolt is somewhat worse as a result. The Inc2 will consistently go the whole day without charging. The Tbolt seems to be much more random, sometimes getting through the day (16-18 hrs), sometimes half that even though my usage is fairly consistent from day to day. I've disabled/changed settings on all the usual suspects without much effect.
Call quality, bluetooth, speakerphone, and voice commands are very good on both phones. Cameras work well on both.
All things considered, I do not regret getting the Tbolt and probably would again, even though the battery life is not the best. The only thing my son would change about his Inc2 is the lack of 4g. Otherwise he loves it.

Thanks for the comparison...it sounds like the TB size is something I could get use to. I think I'm leaning back towards the TB at this point.

g2x experiences

Hey guys, i am currently interested in getting the g2x to dev on. I dev for the Moto defy since the day it came out and have plenty of roms. Now my question is how are you guys experience with this device? I've read some complaints of tons of reboot and back light leak, poor signal..etc.. Any comments would be much appreciated, looking forward to getting this phone

Very good device. Some have backlight bleed but only really noticeable in the dark and when looking at it on an angle.
I haven't had any reboots recently but once when i got a call and after hung up it just died and had to pull battery.
Main problem seems to be that Nvidia's lack of sources for A2DP functionality for stereo bluetooth and that 2.3.3 is on froyo kernel so further updates with custom roms would be difficult.

In all honesty, CM7 works perfectly even with the lack of a2dp support. 2.3.3 OTA based roms (namely Weapon G2x) works just as well if you want that close to stock feel with more features. MIUI has all the same problems CM7 does since they run off the same kernel.
I've never had any issues with reboots, and if people do it's probably because of rogue apps running in the background. I never had a reboot because I like keeping my app drawer as minimal as possible At least, that is my theory

I love my g2x..just checked the sgs2 but not really into that much, my g2x on Cm7 was faster... The roms are good, I do agree with the lack of tegra support but Meh. Love it..please get one and welcome..

Excellent performance, excellent display, and excellent battery life. I'm on my 3rd one, but that was because my first one kept locking up, and my 2nd replacement came damaged.
I love this phone, and I wouldn't want to replace it with anything else until the Nexus Prime. ^_^

Absolutely zero problems, love this phone so much. One of the best parts is the glass. It's curved, which makes unlocking it feel really good , and the glass feels really thick and solid. Also NO scratches, coming from an iphone all these things are huge. Loving it.

I feel like this phone can stay up to date with most of the devices coming out right now... On Android, you don't actually need 1GB of RAM... Heck, 512MB is more than enough! I'm gonna hold out until the quad core phones start coming in... If the Nexus Prime is still a dual core, I won't even bother.

I got 99 experiences but a reboot ain't one.

My 1st G2x is running good.
no reboots, no reception issues.
runs great and my app drawer always has at least 200 apps.

This.... Not thinking if anything but quad core to upgrade...

Anyone get a problem where the phone wont find network after you go into a dead area like subway and you have to disable and re-enable all connections for it to work again?

Reboots
My wife and I both have our 3rd G2x (due to replacements of bad phones). The phones we have now are doing well, however we both did experience a random SHUTOFF not reboot. It only happened twice, so I'm just waiting to see if that happens again, really weird.

My G2x is is running great. On my second one due to random shut downs on my first. I only experienced a couple reboots until I got a brand new battery and rooted the phone. Currently running Eagles Blood 2.3.5 others no misshaps. Love it.

This is a great phone. For those of us that have had no problems, the intended impact of the device is evident.
However, you cannot ignore what a lot of people went through. for many, the g2x experience was the worst possible.
LG and T-Mobile appear to have let the phone fade away. Even though its for sale, and can be had for cheap, it no longer appears in comparison with other good phones on the market today. Check the reviews out their today...cnet, etc....The powers that be have let it fade away.
Even DEVs appear to have moved on. Many of the people here a few months ago have moved to other devices. Even saying that, there are some real good ROMs out there...just less people deving them.
In all honesty I have to say, this phone is the best phone I've owned. But in that same honesty, I'd have to say, you may want to consider something else. Even the Sensation is now getting far more press and exposure from T-Mobile than this beauty. There are TONs of ROMs available for the Sensation and some of the best DEVs from the android world are there.
I've recently considered the Bionic....but the VzW pricing plan is just too much. Minimum $100 a month to walk out with a Bionic.
I love the G2x. But if you want long term upgradabiity...you may wish to look elsewhere.

No. It just finds it. Maybe not on second one, but 10-20.
Also, I came to G2x from the Bold, which would die in a day with no usage under dead zones. That was a huge problem - I was forced to enable and disable airplane mode all around. The G2x is great in that matter.

I have noticed that a lot of problems happen under the stock ROM or roms based on the stock one.
Flashing something like CM7 or MIUI fixes a lot of problems.

Seriously, why is our phone so neglected?

Honestly, the A2 has great performance, it is not top of the line, but it is certainly pretty high end. It has a decent feel overall, but still know one knows about it. Why is this?!!? I'm not even talking strictly from a development standpoint, as it is just so unheard of. everyone knows about the whole droid line and such, but our great phone is completely neglected. There is no way i'm the only one that is bothered by this, especially because there is so much potential in our phone. I know the locked bootloader, makes things difficult, but a way around that is near, so do y'all think development will take off once we get it bypassed or unlocked? Thanks for listening to my rant and feel free to give your own opinion

Motorola or Att did not push this phone like they did with the original Atrix. Most people are going with samsung (sgs2 or the note). That is why we do not have very many devs. Samsung phone are much easier to work with. I know because i have one. If no one else decides to get this phone that's fine with me. I like the phone as is. Im also happy with the few devs we have. Their work is greatly appreciated.

Once cm9 or a form of ics gets calling and texting going then things will start to kick off. Right now with our limited amount of knowledgeable devs some have lost interest and are just sitting by waiting for Motorola to release ics.

you aren't the only one. It pisses me off. I always have service on this phone, for the most part it's fast and smooth, and the ROM support is becoming awesome. Yet still people don't know the name of my phone , they just know it's "big"

Actually, one of the orignal devs for this phone (been on it since it came out) has not lost interest but is working on kexec for our phone which is BY FAR more important than ICS... The possibilities are endless once we have a bootloader bypass.
Motorola did not advertise or really let ANYONE know that the phone was being released. For example, when I walked into the AT&T store with a $100 and a contract renewal, I just browsed/tried all of the phones they had in stock, and happend to like the feature set/performance of the Atrix 2 the best. The funny part is that I had NO idea that the phone actually came out the day before and was just put on display. Luckily the phone is great and the community to go along with it is even greater.

Honestly I'm on Supercharged right now, clocked around 1.25 GHz, and I can go higher, but my battery life sucks. I don't really care about the attention. We're getting ICS, and I'm hoping I don't have a good enough excuse to go back to stock until ICS is out. Then I'm going back to stock for sure. The speed is great, the lagginess and bloat on the stock rom just sucked, but so does my battery life now. It doesn't really take a whole lot to trim down a stock rom, I'm sure someone will do it for ICS if I don't myself.

Freezing apps does wonders for performance + battery life. I use Titanium Backup for this. All the "junk apps" that Motorola/AT&T installed (that I don't use) get frozen.

Some of our roms are great, but there are only 4 or 5 or something, it would be nice to see some of the big ones like cm7. hopefully an unlocked BL and ICS will spark some serious development. I think the biggest problem is the lack of serious developers. Who do we really have? Jimbridgman, lfabor06, and Rdavisct are the only ones I can really think of off the top of my head. We all play a role, but only the true genius' like them do a lot of good towards roms and things

To buy an Atrix 2, I had to special order it from Amazon. The local places didn't sell it because it didn't work with LTE in the area, and were mainly pushing iStuff.
Motorola needs to wake up and start tooting their own horn. The Atrix 2 has been an excellent phone, both in the reception department (better voice and call quality than my HTC and iPhone), CPU department, and in general usage.
Plus, there is an untapped market for these types of phones -- business people who just need a basic laptop where all their data is stored securely at one place, either on the phone with the on device encryption (or SD encryption), or using a Citrix receiver.

This really is the truth of the matter. Until we can load custom kernels on the A2, the devs are kinda limited on what they can modify. ICS with a locked bootloader is not much better than GB with a locked bootloader.
My wife has a Samsung Galaxy and the A2 is better in almost every area; reception, interface, speaker...
