HTC Now Offering to Unlock our Bootloaders - myTouch 4G General

http://www.androidcentral.com/htc-n...ck-hero-legend-eris-mytouch-3g-and-mytouch-4g
HTC has turned on the Wayback Machine and is now offering a bootloader unlock solution for the Droid Eris, the HTC Hero, the HTC Legend, and the T-Mobile myTouch 3G and 4G flavors. It's a move that surprises most of us, as we never expected HTC to go back that far in their device lineup to do the right thing. Most of us have moved past these devices, but I can't be the only one who wants to get a little nostalgic and break out the phone we used before the phone we used before the phone we're using now and give it a go. Do note that the Hero unlock tool is for the GSM versions only, and you may have to flash a new RUU (HTC-speak for a full OEM ROM) to do the deed.
But, hey, they were great phones for their time, and they deserve the same treatment as todays great phones do. Thanks, HTC! Hit the source link to get your unlock on.

[Q] Is The Signed/Locked Bootloader A Deal Breaker?

I have the G2x right now and I keep considering the Sensation. The only thing that is stopping me is that the bootloader may be hard to crack. The devs have yet to do it for several devices and this may be the next. Will this stop you or are you still buying?

Was definitely a deal breaker for me with atrix, but sense I can live with until its hacked. Blur and touchwiz I cannot, so no, I'm still getting it

From what HTC leaks said, it will have a level of security like thunderbolt or incredible S.
If it's like thunderbolt it will be very easy to unlock, if it's like IS given the actual R&D of the devs...it ''may'' be unlocked once released if the IS method is working.
So it doesn't look like an impossible mission for our good devs
All the N1,Desire and DHD devs will work on it, very few are going towar the SGS2
Yes. It IS a deal-breaker for me. It was the only reason I didn't get the Incredible S two months ago.
So far it looks like the only way to unlock the Incredible S is with an XTC Clip and the last time I looked it was only working for some models.
Bin4ry may have made some headway on this but the last post I see from him with any new information on the matter was on the 26th of April when he said, "I said that i made progress YES, but i have not achieved anything."
TBH I've been having a terrible Android experience so far. Being on the Motorola Milestone, I still don' tknow what it's like to be on a fully free device... not to mention the 256mb RAM really CRIPPLES the entire experience of this phone.
So while the specs on these new phones are nice, I think I'd be getting a screwed up vision of Android once again if these phones never get unlocked. Somehow I had hoped Moto's bootloader would get cracked. Boy was I wrong.
The question is : why getting the risk ? there is plenty of unlocked bootloaders devices out there from LG and SE and even some better spec'd like the SGS2. LG and SE aren't very supported by devs but HTC and Samsung are the best supported one, so if a free bootloader is important for you and you don't even want to worry about dev support take an unlocked one
But for me it is not a dealbreaker as I'm getting both (SGS2 and Sensation), but for someone that will only pick one of the two you might have to think twice..

Still the kernel can't be changed. Keep in mind that a stable 2.2 rom wasn't possible until motorola released beta's of that rom. This due to the fact that the 2.2 rom didn't really want to work with the 2.1 kernel. Motorola isn't really great at writing kernels either.
I already know the next android version will probably won't work.

So it will be rootable and we can block ads, use apps requiring root, etc, just not load different ROMs?
Not overly concerned about custom Roms, but definitely want to be able to run some apps that require root.
If I am understanding this correctly my G2x is going back tonight.
I'm completely content to run a stock ROM if it's stable. I've never had occasion to root or put an alternative ROM on my Nexus One and all of my experiences with the HD2, G1, and Viewsonic G-Tablet ROMs have been mixed, Cyanogen or otherwise.
Definitely not a deal breaker.

Hmm I did understand that the latest update of the wildfire made it impossible to flash custom firmware. Hope it doesn't go that way.

[Q] HTC Bootloader and NAND campaign

What is the point of this?
The idea of this is to convince htc to unlock the bootloaders and disable the NAND protection on their phones
Why should I support this?
Unlocking the bootloader and disabling the NAND protection will allow users to keep their phones up to date using custom roms such as CM7. Take the htc wildfire for example. In december 2010, HTC released a 2.2 update for the wildfire. However, hidden in this update was a new bootloader which could not (and still can not as of the 15th may 2011) be modified. It is unlikely that HTC will release another update for this phone, meaning that users are going to be stuck on this rom. The reason? So HTC can sell new phones. However what this is doing is putting users off buying HTC's devices since rival companies have announced that the users can easily unlock the bootloaders on their devices.
To support the campaign please sign the petition at http://goo.gl/uIeqv and you can like us on facebook at http://goo.gl/e1CqN and you can see updates on my blog at http://goo.gl/KdpFr

we need way more attention to this topic...after 1.5 years with the motorola milestone I was waiting for a awesome htc device...although the sensation is inferior to the samsung galaxy s2, I would go for it..I would totally turn a blind eye on the fact that it has less ram, ridiculouse internal storage and its thickness..my only true concern was the bootloader..after the milestone I would never ever go for a device with a signed bootloader again..I would totally pass on guarantee just to have an open bootloader..
If I may interject. The point of a locked bootloader is not to sell more devices, it is to protect the intellectual property contained on said locked device from being dumped, IE full versions of otherwise payed programs that the OEM includes in their ROM(Swype etc.). If users are able to simply dump an image that contains these programs, they can then redistribute them as they see fit. Do not misread me, I am for unlocked bootloaders 100% and have used HTC devices for almost 5 years now. I just wanted to add my opinion that its not about you buying another device for an update, its about manufactures trying to protect themselves.

But sadly, none of these currently have an ENG H-BOOT (as far as we know )
We need that.

S-off is coming! Documentation being prepared!

Many sensation owners do not believe that S-off wil be coming by HTC. too all you disbelievers out there, i attach proof. Just spoke to a customer advisor right now. this is what i was told. i thought i would make a new thread as all the other threads get clogged up with off topic clutter, so please keep this topic related, and update it if we receive any more info on bootloaders. There is hope out there
Naturally i pencilled in my device number
I hope this is true, I mean it shouldn't be hard for them HTC to unlock their own bootloaders! Look at Motorola they did it. Hopefully it will be soon! Before fall I am keeping my fingers crossed!

+1 for that, why we don't have the same unlocking process like Sony ??
I'm not really fussed with S-OFF as the internal memory is the only reason I rooted my Desire BUT it would be nice to remove the apps I don't use just to tidy things up a bit. That and put the stock boot animations on

If your a noob and you brick your device, you should be required to pay a fee for them to unbrick it. That should only be fair.
i think the noob will not unlock the bootloader, my oncle have a Desire and he don't know nothing about bootloader and flash, i do that for him....
That chat box doesn't say anything that hasn't already been said. It's just worded different. A waste of a thread that will do nothing but get peoples hopes up.
Nothing more than we already know. BTW, the earpiece will likely come back sounding the same.
I'm new to android.
Can someone clear this out for me:
* S-OFF means Bootloader unlocked?
* I'm asuming HTC will make an update for all devices which automatically unlocks the bootloader of any sensation? Or will the bootloader only be unlocked with the new devices?

thou I think that the inspire is a good phone, I think with all the new dual core phones that are being released I would not waste an upgrade on this particular phone. I do like this HTC Inspire but still is old tech.
Really? Another opinion thread on the Inspire? How many do we need this week? This is not the section to ask questions also. Can we please clean this forum up starting with threads like this first?

[POLL] rom aggrandizement

So, I really, really don't want to come back to HTC while AT&T has them bent over. However I did tell everyone I was going to make a rom for this device. If jcase gets it unlocked tomorrow I will be a bit more inclined to do it. The thought of playing the Apple cat and mouse game with an android device isn't very appealing to me at all!
So I leave this up to you! Should I make a rom for the AT&T One X? (added a poll)
