Best Modem for AT&T? - Captivate General

For any Cappy users here that have AT&T as their Cell provider what modem do you feel is the best,or does it matter?
Thanks

It really depends on your location. There is a sticky in the dev section that has a user-feedback modem location map that could help you

Honestly, there are so many modems reported in your area that are the "best" that my recommendation would be to try to find someone who also uses your same ROM and use their modem. All the modems can be downloaded from this site as well.

Precision was my daily driver before KB1 was released. It has the best battery life, great performance, and all of those features you are looking for.

I have no idea what those are, but if it's a market app then I would have to say yes.

I can see you do not understand what a modem is, so I will do my best to explain it in simple terms.
A modem is what modulates and demodulates a signal wave in the air, allowing you to send and receive messages/phone calls/data. It is also known as a baseband. It takes digital data and converts it into an analog signal (the waves in the air) and the recipient converts it back into digital information again.
Each modem is designed to specifically work with a certain phone and firmware version. Do not mix i9000 modems with captivate kernels or vice versa.
Depending on the area you live in, certain modems will give you better battery/signal reception/call quality/download speeds.
Ok I understand about the baseband. Just wasnt connecting it with the Modem in my brain. How does the 3G data reception do with that modem? That is a concern as I use internet from phone on work. I am in the Midwest Kansas City area but travel alot on work.

Well you can only use KB1 with captivate ROMs, Precision won't work with it.
KB1 for me has slower data speeds than i9000 modems like JK4 and JL2. Also the GPS doesn't seem as fast.
Should I use Odin to install this rom, also the link to it in the GUIDE thread doesnt seem to be working anymore. Where Can I get Odin???

No, you can't flash it through odin. You install it in clockworkmod recovery.
Never used clockworkmod recovery. Any tips

[q] service issue

I have noticed after cm7 service signal is not that great with the infuse, i saw the modem section in the THREAD WITH ALL THE THE ROMS AND KERNELS , and i saw a few people were having some luck with one of the modems. Is there a particular modem for service i saw a few new ones have been added. any you recommend? thanks.
A MODEM ON THE INFUSE IS THE SAME THING AS A RADIO..say for like an atrix RIGHT?
Yes the modem is the radio as for which is best everyone gets different results you just have to try them and see what works best in your area

differences in modem versions

What's the difference in the modem versions for the SGS4G? I read somewhere that they can get you better reception, but I guess which one is the best/newest one?
Sent from my Transformer TF101
The newest is Kj6 as it is from the official gingerbread release. And the “best” is going to vary on a user to user basis as some provide better coverage for certain users than others. I have a complete list in my guide linked in my signature if you would like to check them out

You can get better reception depending on what modem you use.
The latest one is KJ6...
There are a couple of threads that have many different modems in them to flash. You basically have to find which one works best in your area by trying them out yourself. Maybe reading those threads will give you an answer for where you are.
Or you can post where you are located in this thread and hope that another member may live near you and has already found the best modem for your area.
I hate it when I mobile reply and someone beats me to the punch..
Sorry for being off topic.

Rogers captivate supports hspa - 3 ics modem.zips included

I realize this should have been noticed forever ago.... Rogers stock supports hspa, but never was on stock long enough to notice, and up till now for ATT people to get hspa they needed to flash a reoriented i9000 kernel and i9000 modem.
guess this is why the rogers captivate is i896 instead of i897. official hspa+ support. the way the phone was designed.
so in the rogers sources would be kernel info to get official 4g support, when used with the rogers uxkh2 modem
ICS/miui/cm7 compatible zip in post 4 - hspa and audience support -the ONLY modem that supports both
i just threw together a cm7/miui/ICS flashable zip of the Rogers CAPTIVATE hspa enabled modem with Audience chip support! .
works awesome on kang ics (any cm7/miui/ics should work) on both rogers and bell sim card/networks.
enjoy an official captivate modem with hspa and audience chip support !

I thought that audience chip support also had to be implemented in the kernel... wasn't that all the fuss about how i897 modems cannot be used with oriented i9000 kernels?
It is possible to build kernels with audience support the audience support source information is in the Rogers gingerbread source code
Some speed tests:
Bottom 3 results are ugkg3 modem. Two of those at work, the third at home. Great speeds.
Top 3 results from the Rogers captivate modem. Reasonable download speed, but upload speed sucks.
This should be tested by someone running a kk4 build maybe, with a captivate kernel. Might yield different results.
All depends on location and carrier. And came from rogers kh2 rom. And to your previous post, i never said this would work on i9000 re-oriented kernels....
and personally im not too worried about the down/up load speeds. At my new job, building a In-situ sag-d oil plant in the middle of nowhere, this is the ONLY modem that has given me any signal at all on rogers network... (when I stand in the right part of the parking lot).
imagine that.. rogers modem gives me the best signal (any signal at this location) on rogers network.

But we don't have any CM7/ICS kernels that support it as of now
Sent from my SGH-I897 using XDA
but its possible to build them. the problem was people had to choose i897 kernel to get audience chip support OR i9000 kernel to get hspa (to use a i9000 modem), and most people wanted hspa more.
now we dont have to choose. we can build a captivate kernel that supports both!
^
Nice find btw on this !

I tested on CM9 nightly with radio-cm7-ics-captivate-uxkh2 and found the upload and ping speeds lacking, but this may differ in your area.
Best results I have gotten are with the KC1 modem.

I flashed the XHKH2 to my phone (AT&T Captivate, Running MIUI 2.3.7) and it functioned. I got decent download/upload speeds, but the call quality didn't work out for me very well (people on the other end said it was hard to understand me, lots of reverberation on my side).
In all fairness, I am in the US, so that may have something to do with it.
testing the uxkh2 I got audio problem, but only when not using handsfree or others... so I dice to enter on SamsungServiceMode and start changing settings and now people dont hear themselves but still hear the background noise high, maybe just more tweek could solve it. Any expert on SamsungServiceMode configs here? XD
Gonna try those other modem later, what mean that one is eclair and the other froyo???

What does radios and apn do?

What exactly do these things do? I'm on embryo 5.3 and the call quality is bad. It sounds like I'm under water. Will flashing a new radio or change apn help with this?
Sent from my S2 Skyrocket
Radio/Modem is basically how you get your signal or connection. Different versions may affect people differently depending on location, say if UCLF6 was better in Florida than in Texas or UCLF5 is better than UCLF6 in call quality (just an example), you just have to test which one you like the best when it comes down to customizing them.
APN can be included with radio/modem installations but its basically Access Point Names and its what the radio/modem uses to get their connection. If you have an APN for AT&T you use that, if you have an APN for Straight Talk you use that, some times there will be one specifically for LTE users and so forth.
Think of your Radio/Modem as your Cable Modem and think of APN as your provider.
Thank you so much man. One more question. I'm on stock uclf6 right now and when I flash...let's say embryo and it uses the same uclf6 but I get that under water sound, I can flash let's say uclf5? Would it be possible that would fix the problem? And it wouldn't affect me getting calls and texts?

Correct. You can flash any ics radio for skyrocket and still get calls/texts. I use ucalc4 cause it gives me the best signal and battery life. But it's all depending on your region. I'm in Louisville, Kentucky area.

If you go to mohan's thread he has a list of other radios you can use:

You can also use the rogers one if you'd like.

I know there are tons of radio files for the SR , but I also know that messing too much with radio is risky (bricking , serious problems etc etc ..) so I asked if somebody can share an area specific radio experience ..
Thanks

Honestly, after I tried 4, I stopped looking. I seem to remember that uclf5 worked well too though. May try it. I've flashed a TON of radios, and not had any issues, I wouldn't worry too much about it as long as you get them from the skyrocket threads.
