differences in modem versions - Samsung Galaxy S (4G Model)

What's the difference in the modem versions for the SGS4G? I read somewhere that they can get you better reception, but I guess which one is the best/newest one?
Sent from my Transformer TF101

The newest is Kj6 as it is from the official gingerbread release. And the “best” is going to vary on a user to user basis as some provide better coverage for certain users than others. I have a complete list in my guide linked in my signature if you would like to check them out

You can get better reception depending on what modem you use.
The latest one is KJ6...
There are a couple of threads that have many different modems in them to flash. You basically have to find which one works best in your area by trying them out yourself. Maybe reading those threads will give you an answer for where you are.
Or you can post where you are located in this thread and hope that another member may live near you and has already found the best modem for your area.

I hate it when I mobile reply and someone beats me to the punch..
Sorry for being off topic.

Honeysense questions (radio, scripts, etc)

I'm running the latest honeysense on my inspire. I was reading about flashing different radios and changing the clock speed. What are the benefits from these modifications and where can i find a good guide on how to do it?

Well, there's a lot of info regarding over/underclocking. Searching will provide you with probably more than you'll know what to do with.
As applies to the ROM you're running, the best and most relevant discussion would likely be in the honeysense ROM thread itself.
I know browsing through pages of posts doesn't sound appealing, but it really is a good idea when it comes to this stuff, to get a feel for what others have been doing in this area with that particular ROM.
Now, as far as radios, often times there'll be a radio recommended for a rom, that recommendation could be the result of any number of things.
The stock OTA radio often ends up working the most reliably across a lot of roms. If you're not experiencing any issues with signal quality/data speeds, there really isn't any need to mess with it.
Even after flashing a new ROM, if performance in these areas seems to be degraded compared to your previous ROM, this can often times be addressed by making sure the RIL of the ROM is matched with your radio.
RILs change with each new ROM flash, radios do not. So a mismatch is a common occurrence and can cause radio performance issues, yet is easily remedied by flashing the appropriate RIL.
The inspire only radio thread has all the radio/rils/recommendations/instructions you need...over in the dev section.

RE: Overclocking the CPU
I think this is about the most elegant solution....I'm a CPU guy...so maybe overly weird I do not want some "App" running my over/underclock...This works...and 52 steps should be enough to figure out what works for you in conjunction with something like Llama to toggle the other stuff...JMHO....It is available on a few ROM's now i believe....run adb command though n actually see what clock steps are available: for some reason my cpu is missing a common speed step :-o. . bad qualcom bad
Edit: ooops the link:

Thanks for the replies guys. I've gotten through about 300 pages of the honey ROM thread. Very tedious and confusing LOL.

[q] service issue

I have noticed after cm7 service signal is not that great with the infuse, i saw the modem section in the THREAD WITH ALL THE THE ROMS AND KERNELS , and i saw a few people were having some luck with one of the modems. Is there a particular modem for service i saw a few new ones have been added. any you recommend? thanks.
A MODEM ON THE INFUSE IS THE SAME THING AS A RADIO..say for like an atrix RIGHT?
Yes the modem is the radio as for which is best everyone gets different results you just have to try them and see what works best in your area

Different Kernals and radios

Hey so im planning on putting sky-ics on my skyrocket and would like to know what the difference is from all the different kernels and radios are. Can I have a different kernel version then radio version(like have a uclf6 kernel with a uclf5 radio). Which one will give me the best reception?
Do more research you aren't ready clearly.
Yes you can use different kernels as long as they are for that type of ROM
Radios are the only thing affecting reception kernel wont do anything for that and are device specific not ROM specific
This is basic info if you don't know these things you should not be flashing but reading do yourself and us old timers a favor

Search before posting. Search search search search search before posting.
You can use any Sky-compatible kernel with any ICS radio. Don't go flashing Instigator's kernel under Sky, because you will be back here pleading for help with your $600 paperweight. Sean has a comprehensive list of kernels and radios in his OP; mix and match from there and you're safe.
As for reception, SEARCH. Every radio is different and will give you different results depending on where you are. I've taken to keeping 3-4 radios on my SD card for when I travel, as the one that works best for me at home is often not the one that works best for me in Chicago, New York, DC, etc. Even got myself a little list of which radios work best for me where so I can flash before I fly. Point being, no one radio is better than any other, and you have to experiment with them to find out which works best for you.
Are all the radios on the sky-ics page good with at&t? If one is a rodgers radio will I still get reception?
We aren't spoon feeding you son read there are noob threads and such to give you a start

They do not answer my question.
Then read other threads all your questions have in fact been answered somewhere so I would recommend the search button I'm saving you from a lot of hate later

Noting in any of those guides pertains to my question of what the difference from all the different radios and kernels are, there is not a description for each of them as their should be.

That's really because something like that can't be written. A radio is a radio. There is no fundamental difference between them; any difference you notice between radios is a product of the network in your area being better tuned to one radio than another. The only way to gauge that is to try several.
As to kernels, again, there's really not a ton of difference. Some have BLN, some don't. Some support OC/UV, some don't. You have to read the individual threads for each kernel, decide which features are important to you, then start testing them for yourself to find which one works best for you. Everyone's usage is different, so the kernel I like is one you might find to be terrible.
Does it make a little more sense now as to why no one's given you a "guide to radios and kernels"?
For AT&T, the UCLF6 radio is latest radio update made available. You'll probably have the best luck with that one. However, as others have posted, it depends on where you live, what type of network connection you're on (lte, 3g, edge), etc, so trying different radios is the only way to know for sure.
Kernals for the phone can be found in skyrocket dev, read around and find out which ones fit your needs. You need to dig for this stuff.
All that being said, we as new members are in no position to make demands of those who provide info and resources to us. Asking the difference between a kernel and a radio is like asking the difference between a toaster and a sofa. They're just completely different things. However, some kernels do come "bundled" with a radio. Kind of like when you used to buy Windows it came with IE.
In this case, the radio is the software function that controls the actual hardware radio in the phone in order to communicate with the network provider. The kernel is kind of like an interchangeable foundation for the ROM itself. A custom kernel can let you overclock, undervolt, choose additional governors, or have BLN if it isn't built in to the ROM, or some other things too occasionally.
EDIT: And, +1 to robcore.

I don't think there is a "best" modem for CM10. From what I understand, it depends on your actual device, your distance from towers and your usage patterns (e.g. how often you hop from 3G to 4G). I could tell you my limited experience with various modems and CM10, but it could prove to be unhelpful for your specific case. That said, the G7 modem worked better for me on both AOSP and JB/TW roms. I live in a cellular blackhole and my phone bounces between basic phone service coverage to 3G to 4G. When I was using the latest modem (K1 I think) and an AOSP rom, I don't think I ever saw my phone get a lock on 4G. And TW roms would always say "Network Extender" (instead of Verizon Wireless) on the lock screen.
In short, try 'em out for a day or two and see which one works best for you.
Every radio/modem is going to give every single user a different experience. There is no single "best" one because everybody gets various results. What's "best" for me may not be "best" for you. Only advice i can give you is to try out different ones and if you find that gives you really good results then stick with it, there's no reason to fix something that ain't broken
Okay. Thanks both of you! I live in a cellular black hole too and am very surprised I get to send texts at all because its just my phone,my bros iPhone, and Motorola phones that even get service in my house. I'll try swapping them around a bit starting with the factory one and ending with newest. Thanks!

What radio for att and cleanrom?

I'm curious which radio you guys are using. Are you using the radio from the firmware upgrade or have you tried a different one? My reception in the settings isn't very good and it seems like my battery drains a little faster than before.

If you're on the 2.15 firmware package the best radio for you is apparently the one that is bundled with it. Nobody can really tell you which radio to use as it depends on your location, among other things. If you're having trouble with your current radio you need to test a few for yourself, note the results, and go with the one that works best for you.
I saw you posted this question in the radio as well. If you took a few minutes to read a few pages of that thread you would have seen that this is the answer given every time someone asks which radio is best.
