Is anyone else having this problem where the phone will just lose service and you have to wait a few minutes for it to reconnect. It seems like its been happening quite often. Also a lot of times the phone will have full service but the internet connection wont work.

First you can try a different modem if you want.
If that doesn't work try reflashing the ROM.
If that doesn't fix your problem read this thread and follow the advice. I have not had any issues and you may have gremlins you need to clear.
Ok thanks I've already tried the first two options I'm gonna try the third one today is that doesn't work looks like I'll have to give tmobile a call to get a replacement
Sent from my galaxy s 4g using XDA app
There are several modems to try. Some work better for some then others. I am sure you have tried fixing permissions also?
Ya I've tried fixing permissions and in the past few weeks I've probably tried quite a few modems. I'm thinking its something with the phone
Sent from my galaxy s 4g using XDA app
Well you may wait a bit and see if somebody else steps in with ideas.
How's the coverage in your area? I was having similar issues a few months back and it was coverage not phone related. If the coverage is good one thing you can try is manually forcing network provider. Settings>wireless & network>mobile networks>network operators>default setup>manual>choose your carrier
Give that a shot if you haven't and hope it works for you
The coverage is pretty good because ill have like 3 bars and solid 4g coverage and just out if no where it will drop service
Sent from my galaxy s 4g using XDA app
Try manually forcing carrier. Mine was dropping TMOB service and picking up ATT because they have a stronger network where I live. One of the suggestions from tech support level 3 was to do that. Never worked for me and eventually got let out of my contract.

I had the same problem. It's in the build.prop settings. Some have it, others don't. I think it has to do with your location. At first I thought it was just me as I am on AT&T. But now I see otherwise. Download script manager from the market. Open it and navigate to /system. Remount /system as rw and change the permissions of build.prop to rw as well (long press it and the option to do so is in the menu under properties). Open the build.prop as text and scroll down till you see:
Code:
ro.ril.hsxpa=[B]2[/B]
and change the value (2) to 1.
Code:
ro.ril.hsxpa=[B][COLOR="Red"]1[/COLOR][/B]
Save the changes and reboot. I also flashed the KD1 modem as I have always had great results from it.
I have helped a few people with this method, and it seems to be working well. You can also install the latest version of Lightning Zap (link in signature) where I changed the value already.

What does this do? Im sure it has something to do with refresh most likely.
Good question. I know it has to do with the network settings, but I decided to GOOGLE it, READ, LEARN all the facts, before I answered. Here's what I found:
Code:
Android's Radio Interface Layer (RIL) provides an abstraction layer between
Android telephony services (android.telephony) and radio hardware.
The RIL is radio agnostic, and includes support for Global System for
Mobile communication (GSM)-based radios.
ro.ril.hsxpa: inidcates hsxpa support of target network.
That information can be found here:
RIL
A more direct explination:
Code:
ro.ril.hsxpa= (other values are invalid until proven otherwise)
[0=UMTS] [1=HSDPA only] [2=HSDPA & HSUPA] [5=No significant
information has been found but it make the switch between WiFi
and HSxPA nearly instantaneous (note works like "2" but better)]
And can be referenced here:
GSM Tweaks
But the bottom line is this:
Code:
TMO US:
ro.ril.hsxpa=1
ro.ril.gprsclass=10
TMO EU:
ro.ril.hsxpa=2
ro.ril.gprsclass=12
*This info is taken from Nexus One forum archives, but still gives us some
guidance...
And that info can be referenced here:
Tmo 3g Fix Guide
Therefore, with this information at hand, I believe the issue is related to LOCATION and not the ROM or phone. I'm sure if you are in a 3g only network or a low signal area, then you should change the value to 1. But if you are in a 4g area then the value can be set to 2.
Not to mention, I learned this from early test builds of Lightning Zap through trial, error, and epic failure.
Thanks everyone I'm gonna try everything when I get home and see what works

I have had my Galaxy S 4G about 1 month now and I'm a newb to Android. I've not rooted or done anything other than load more apps from the Market to try and learn more about this phone. It is out of the box stock as of 9/2011
My Wifi shows that it is on and logged on to my router at home and when I run the SpeedTest.net app it shows that ping works (though slow) and then the download runs but then times out with a network error.
All I do is toggle off the wifi and then back on again and try it again and suddenly it works fine for some extended time.
I have an I-pod touch that always works along with a laptop that has no issues with the 802.11 g connection from the same chair that I'm sitting in with the phone.
It is an annoyance to keep having to check for "quality of service" issues with an internet connection. You never know when you will have to toggle the service back on again or if you are just looking at a server issue on the other end of the connection
Is this a known problem with either Froyo, Samsung Galaxy or T-Mobile?
My config:
[t959v] = [SGH-T959V]
Firmware version
2.2.1
Kernal Version
2.6.32.9
Build #
Froyo.vuvkd1
Thanks in advance.

Not to my knowledge. I had my SGS4G back in February before the KD1 update and never had the problem. It wouldn't be a T-Mobile issue as, whatever the problem is, is between your phone and the router. So T-Mobile is out of that equation.
Maybe try a factory data reset? Just a thought to see if it helps. I can't think of a good reason it would but it's just an idea. Given that you're not rooted nor running any custom ROMs or firmware I don't want to even think about pointing you down that road.
Have you tried it with more than the 1 router in the house? If it's a problem with wifi in general it could be defective hardware. If it's only with the 1 router then there could be other variables at play (type of router, security on it, & the SGS4G not liking that, etc.)
I'm rambling...but stumped a bit.
Called t_mobile support and once I got to the second level support person she had me stop by a store and get an updated Sim card.
My original card was 7 years old. I really didn't think that would matter, but so far it seems to have done the trick.

Awesome. Glad you got it working.
I have a Galaxy s 4G. It was on stock 2.36 ROM rooted. Just about a week ago the 4g connection started having connection problems. Most of the time the 4g icon is white (green being normal) when wifi is disabled. It did turn green a few times but it was either low speed or fake. The cell reception is worse than it used to be as well.
I then flashed icbinb 2.3.7_v2 following lumin30's post and tried different modem versions provided by FB, none of these solved this 4g connection problem. (maybe both are irrelevant). Wondering anybody had the same experience .. could this be a hardware problem? thanks.
oops.. Moderator, can you please move my post to the Q&A section? I appreciate it..

Of course it could always be a hardware problem - but that is hard to diagnose ourselves. I recommend either -
Gremlin Remover - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=22596598&postcount=1
Or Heimdall One-Click - second link in my signature
And more so recommend Gremlin Remover for your situation. After Gremlin Remover I recommend a Factory Reset. Then flash the ROM you want. Then hell factory reset it again for good measure. Try it and tell us how it goes.

thanks man.. let me read through and give it a try.
Actually it could be a T-Mobile problem. I've been having issues with data speeds being very poor lately as has a buddy of mine who has a gs2. So if you happen to be in the kc area I would say blame T-Mobile, anywhere else I'd still wonder if its on T-Mobiles end of things.
Last night (this morning, whatever you consider 4-5AM) I did get ravers new rom downloaded in 5 mins, but generally my speeds have been unusually slow.

When my data speeds slow down - I toggle Airplane mode and it will reset and connect to a closer, better tower and speed is back. Might be something for you to test.

I am trying to flash it back to stock rom and send it back to samsung....
Try Restarting the phone as well.
Also Try going to Settings -> Wirless and Network -> Wifi Settings.

Hi. I was using my Sensation last night, went to bed and woke up the next day only to find that my 4G connection wasn't working! The signal bars were white and the icon (currently an H) is flashing. What does this mean? How can I fix it? I can only use Wifi at the moment, and I DO NOT pay an extra $10/mo to deal with this! How can I fix this? I've checked my data settings, rebooted my phone, scanned fir viruses, but can't figure it out!

this happened to me the other day, even in 3G/4G mode my data would never connect and E would just keep flashing over and over again (in like 10 sec. intervals) thought it was a ROM problem so I restored a backup and sure enough, the problem was still happening. I could still make calls and send texts fine tho. its not happening to me anymore, but I found it weird. could it possibly be T-Mobile messing with their towers or something in preparation for LTE?
Well, I'm not sure what caused this very same issue for me a couple days ago. I can say that it ONLY effected my AOSP (CM9) rom, but my Sense rom was unphased. It seems to be a common recent complaint in the OpenSensation thread...
I've since then done a fresh install of CM9 RC1 with the addition of Tamcore's kernel. Although I'm not experiencing the described symptom any longer, I can say that my data speeds are far from exceptional. I'm not sure what is going on, but it does seem to be carrier related.
I experienced the same 1 day after flashing CM9 RC1. I re-flashed the Virtuous Inq. ROM I was using previously and the problem went away
My phone went back to normal later on. I think you were right mulletcutter, they might have been servicing it.

Same data connectivity issue
I have two sensations, both shows similar data connectivity issue on TMobile. Data signal jump to connected and not connected for couple hours, and eventually problem will go away. I have both phones rooted running either CM9 or Kang. So far I have tried couple following things but no solutions. I believe its HTC Sensation hardware issue:
1. Flickering so far seen usually after night long charge in the morning. It will last couple hours, some time days.
2. Changing/reflashing ROMs did not help at all and saw same issue continued.
3. One of my friend has Sensation and he also has seen same issue.
4. Some time going into Phone application(Dialer) and then Settings/Advance settings and come back without doing anything helps but not always.
Please post here is you have temporary/permanent solution or even know the root cause of this data connectivity issue.
Also thinking to call Tmobile to get some kind of help but not expecting much as I bought phones more than year ago but less than 2 years. I don't want to give any more commitment/agreement with Tmobile as planning to move to value plans to save some money. If Tmobile does not help, thinking to try American Express to conver it under extentended warranty as I paid by AMEX credit card.
Thanks
Have you tried the application get ril? I was having some issues myself, I'm also T-Mobile. I tried get ril and found out my radio and ril we're not matching. The application suggested a ril for download and once I did that I went from one bar of connection to five bars of connection on H. It made a big difference for me. Perhaps it could also help you? You can download get ril from the market. It sure won't hurt to try. Best of luck.

Its a defect in the basic aosp framework. There is nothing you can do to fix it. There is also nothing your usage did to start it.
The good news is that it should disappear on its on after a few hours.
Check my threads started history. You will find a thread near the top of that list showing almost all there is to know about this issue. I think my thread might be linked in the first 2 posts of the cm10 faq thread too.

I saw this tweak on a different page, I've tested it and it helps. Anyway, open the build prop file, after the last ro command, write the following:
ro.product.rat=EvDo only
then restart the phone and that's it! What does it do? It prevents your phone from loosing 3g. Aka the 1xrtt status. Like I said I saw this post so, I do not take credit for it! Oh & like anything else BACK UP your build. prop.

Hello! Thanks for taking time to help me out!
Here is what is happening; I just recently updated my phone to Marshmallow and am running XtraSmooth with EXKernel. I live in China and had to follow the tutorial to change one of my bands to get LTE here. Of course everything was working fine before I updated to M6.
I can go into the 'Testing' Menu (*#*#4636#*#*) and switch to LTE only and LTE works great, however I then can not receive or send calls or text messages. When I do switch to LTE Only the LTE connection is usually much stronger than when not on LTE. For now I leave it on LTE/GSM (auto).
When I wake up my phone it is usually connected to 3g or edge, after a while it connects to H but then jumps back to 3g, and never seems to connect to LTE.
Is there a new feature I am not aware of that is causing this issue that I could turn off?
Thanks Again,
Chris

Thanks for your reply! I really appreciate your help!
This is the thread I got the hack/mod from for the LTE bands. I did re-perform the hack to verify it is still functioning. A few users in that thread reported it working with Marshmallow.
I was just out and about and I did notice LTE being used occasionally, sometime working sometimes not -- Oddly enough H seemed to not work at all giving DNS errors in chrome.
I am about to just restore my phone back to Lollipop with the twrp image I have... But I really do like to stay update to date with the latest OS. I also wanted to try a Chinese ROM like MIUI but they are still stuck on kitkat for the N5 and I don't want to go that far back... If the phone is still performing poorly and no one knows what is going on in a day or two I may revert back just to save myself the headache! I may also try a different ROM like Chroma to see if it helps.
If anyone else has ideas please let me know! Thank you!

Last thought it make sure you wiped everything in TWRP before flashing the ROM and make sure the modem you're using is marshmallow compatible. if you performed the steps on modem that isn't compatible, that could have caused your issues. I don't know a lot about phones... When you say modem when referring to phones do you mean radio? I flashed the stock M6 factory Google Image by running the flash-all.bat. After that I flashed the ROM. Should doing this have taken care of that
Should I attempt to flash some other things? If so can you point me in the right direction.
Also it seems to be working a little better, steadily connected to LTE, however I get many many DNS errors; again I live in China. I am going to try to set custom DNS that I know works well here, when I get home from school. Is there a good app for this?

first, when you see modem and radio, those are the same file. and yes you flashed it correctly using the "flash-all.bat." :good: so you have the latest modem for the nexus 5. The DNS errors could mean many things. DNS depends on carrier, proxys they may be using, phone settings, etc. also for next time before you flash any files, read the stickies and rules. If not people may get mad at you & call you names if you ask question that already have answers inside of the rules and stickies
---------- Post added at 10:41 PM ---------- Previous post was at 10:40 PM ----------
focus on fixing the LTE problem first completely than deal with the DNS so you don't confuse the problems.

Honestly if those settings are coming up using the cell network, idk. Be certain your APN settings are correct since that could effect it. Lastly if that didn't happen with out the custom radio than you may be having some issues with the mod. go back to the thread and make sure you did everything like they said. also try using a different browser, I heard something about google and China not being good with each other

I really appreciate you sticking around and helping me out! I am at school or work all day so I only have short evenings to trouble shoot. So here is what I experienced today;
I can now steadily connect to LTE (even in areas I was having trouble with before). Sometimes, when I connect to wifi then disconnect and therefore reconnect to LTE it doesn't handle the switch-over very well and gives issues with the connection (the NXDOMAIN errors or, more rarely, no internet connection at all). I downloaded LTE Discovery which showed me I am connected on band 3 which means the 'hack' successfully applied. I also asked over on their post and they said It will stay across a factory update. To fix the connection errors I can usually restart my phone or play with the APNs (switch back and forth), merely turning data off then back on does not fix the issue.
My next idea is to switch ROMs then downgrade. but oddly enough, right now, no matter what I do it works... This is nuts, haha.

also, be sure no one else in your area, with your service provider is having the same issue.
