[Q] wifi intermittent - Samsung Galaxy S (4G Model)

I have had my Galaxy S 4G about 1 month now and I'm a newb to Android. I've not rooted or done anything other than load more apps from the Market to try and learn more about this phone. It is out of the box stock as of 9/2011
My Wifi shows that it is on and logged on to my router at home and when I run the SpeedTest.net app it shows that ping works (though slow) and then the download runs but then times out with a network error.
All I do is toggle off the wifi and then back on again and try it again and suddenly it works fine for some extended time.
I have an I-pod touch that always works along with a laptop that has no issues with the 802.11 g connection from the same chair that I'm sitting in with the phone.
It is an annoyance to keep having to check for "quality of service" issues with an internet connection. You never know when you will have to toggle the service back on again or if you are just looking at a server issue on the other end of the connection
Is this a known problem with either Froyo, Samsung Galaxy or T-Mobile?
My config:
[t959v] = [SGH-T959V]
Firmware version
2.2.1
Kernal Version
2.6.32.9
Build #
Froyo.vuvkd1
Thanks in advance.

Not to my knowledge. I had my SGS4G back in February before the KD1 update and never had the problem. It wouldn't be a T-Mobile issue as, whatever the problem is, is between your phone and the router. So T-Mobile is out of that equation.
Maybe try a factory data reset? Just a thought to see if it helps. I can't think of a good reason it would but it's just an idea. Given that you're not rooted nor running any custom ROMs or firmware I don't want to even think about pointing you down that road.
Have you tried it with more than the 1 router in the house? If it's a problem with wifi in general it could be defective hardware. If it's only with the 1 router then there could be other variables at play (type of router, security on it, & the SGS4G not liking that, etc.)
I'm rambling...but stumped a bit.

Called t_mobile support and once I got to the second level support person she had me stop by a store and get an updated Sim card.
My original card was 7 years old. I really didn't think that would matter, but so far it seems to have done the trick.

[Q] ics 4.0.4 stock ROM wifi stops working

On my completely stock xoom, running the latest build, the wifi stops working after a time (not *sure* how long, but let's say an hour or two). After the wifi has stopped, the tablet will not locate any network (AP) nor will it detect them on the wifi analizer app, with shows all the networks in range and their channels and strengths. The app shows no network activity, which I know to be incorrect. However, after I reboot, all is well... until it fails again. When 8t fails, also, turni g the wifi off and back on again does not fix the wifi (that being a solution I found on other tablets running ICS... any ideas what this can be? Thanks in advance!

Man, if you are rooted, then I can help you better. With stock, it is very limited control that you have over your device. It is easy to root and install custom ROM that will fix most of your problems.
I was actually hoping for a solution that did not involve rooting
I was actually hoping for a solution that did not involve rooting the device. The tablet just came back from Motorola after being repaired for a defective screen. I was thinking that there may be a software problem in the build installed. If this is not a problem that is common on this device, then perhaps there may be a hardware problem, although it does not seem to act that way. . .
Can you do a factory reset?
Sent from my Xoom using XDA Premium HD app
Yes, that was one of the first things I tried, as that is also the first thing customer support tells you to do. I honestly think that is the only tool they have to use.....
Perhaps its hardware related then. If you aren't rooted then send it back to Motorola.

Wifi issues since ics update

I don't know if anyone else is having this issue or not but since I updated to ics UCLD2 and UCLE2 on both updates I seem to drop wifi connection every few minutes. Every few minutes I see a box come up that says connected to belkin. I know its actually dropping it because at times I will look up at the status bar and the wifi symbol that shows your connected won't be there then it will come back on and say connected to belkin. Its something in the phone because all the other devices on wifi in the house isn't having this problem. Anyone having or have had this problem? Any solutions? My wifi is set to never sleep and I've tried several wifi fix apps on the market and I've tried changing wifi channels still no luck..

The only thing I could suggest is flashing romracers radio he pulled from the leak. Flash it once, wait a minute, then flash it again and wait 30 seconds and reboot. It may help, it may not.
OK I don't why but I read somewhere that the skyrocket don't deal with wpa and psk security to good so I removed the security off my wifi connection and renamed it something other than belkin. I did this about oh 4 hours ago and I have not lost connection once which is great but now my wifi is wide open with no security. Guess Ill have to put my monitor on it that will let me know if more than 5 devices are connected....

Are you able to run security on your home wifi or do you just have it open? My wifi works better and faster than ever with not one disconnect as long as there is no security key to logon to the wifi. Its crazy I've never had this problem with any other device. And none of our other phones which include captivate infuse HTC status or our friends iPhone or laptops does it only my phone and only since the Android 4.0 upgrade. I flashed back to my nanadroid gingerbread backup earlier and it connected with no problems with the security on but soon as I flash back to ics is drops every few minutes until I turn the security off. So I tried the gingerbread modem with the ics and still the same drops every few minutes only with the security on. So I don't know I'm just leaving my security off and maybe when the official update comes out it will have a fix...

Im not actually at home, I am running on hotel wifi which is not secure. So I can't test that for you.
My SR has had near flawless wifi in multiple networks / security types, on 2.3.5 /6 GB and on UCLE2. The 1 exception is my home router, where it would make the secure connection, but the broadband DNS server seems to block its data connection. This affected Cappy also, resolved both with static settings. The only wifi adapters I've seen needing open settings either needed newer drivers, or were damaged ones needing replacement. One workaround for your 5 at home is a MAC filtering list.
As for wifi issues,
the only serious wifi issues I had was when using Facebook. It simply could not hold a connection. Browser, any other apps all seemed to work fine.

Given the other phones work well it seems like a fault in your phone, not the routers. One troubleshoot/workaround is to enter appropriate static IP settings as detailed in posts 1 & 7 here. That will either stabilize it or show you need to reimage the phone with full wipes to test further. You can screenshot most of the settings you need using the Ipconfig app by Mankind, during a good connection. Just take care to choose a static address outside of the router's assignable DHCP range, to avoid conflicts.
The same issue exists on the recently rolled out official ICS update for the Galaxy Note, I'm having this problem with stock radio and no root.

As long as I'm connected to an open wifi connection it works just fine but if I secure it it constantly disconnects. I'm starting to wonder if its a Samsung problem now because my wife's Samsung infuse on gingerbread is doing the same thing. And its not just my home wifi it does it at friends house with secure wifi and at mother in laws to with secure connection but never on any open connection. Um my daughters two HTC phones does not have this problem so I'm starting to think maybe its a Samsung problem. I don't think its an android problem cause both the gingerbread phone and my ics phone is doing the same thing. If it is android its something in gingerbread that carried over to ics

Had same problem
I had the same issue , went from 2.3.6 Gingerbread to the ICS UCLE2 leak and my wi-fi would turn on and off , so I just started from scratch went back to 2.3.4 via Odin , updated to 2.3.6 and flashed back to the UCLE2 leak via Odin and now it's working fine , I kinda figured it was a glitch in the software somewhere , from where I had changed rom's so many time's , and apparently it was , hope this was helpful.

WiFi Problems with One S

Hello everyone,
my wife has an One S and is quite happy with it. she has only one gripe. sometimes the phone just cant connect to any wifi network. she noted it after a few days owning the device without using it much on the road, allmost just using internet at our house via wifi when she got a message that her free quota is used up and she will be slowed down till the end of the billing perios.
Sometimes (apparently when away for some time) the phone cant connect to wifi anymore. it does not show the wifi symbol in the notification bar. when i look in the wifi settings its constantly switching between showning the networkname and the encryption details and showing "connecting" every few seconds. because she has used up all her bandwith for this billing period i wantet to give her access to the bandwith of my contract via the wireless hotspot function fo my GNex. here we have the same problem.
when she restarts her phone it immediantly connects to any wifi network she has access to.
after reading a bit i found out about some bug in the one s but as faar as i understand it that leaves the wifi sleeping when not connected for some time.
i tryed the fix about the static ip which looked like it helped, but after a few days we are at the same problem again.
she is happy with the stock sense and her unrooted phone and does not really want to mess that deep with her phone, but she is also not really willing to reboot her device every so often (she had an issue with her old phone, HTC Desire, that also could be fixed with a reboot but she could not stand it and got the one s as a replacement)
is this a know problem with the phone or something i could get fixed from htc? some settings that we could tweek? would a custom rom help? if so is there one as close as possible to the stock rom that fixes it? so if it helps maybe i could unlock her phone and install an "allmost" stock rom so she does not have to handle a totally new enviroment besides sense.
Have you updatet it to the latest official patch, 2.21.401.10?
I believe there has been updates to the radio so maybe it will fix the problem?
the phone is now three weeks old. dont know about that patch. my wife is not here right now so i cant check the phone. was it an OTA update? cuz i dont remember that there was one. or do i have to download it from the htc site?
wife just came back.
cant find any note of a patch on her phone the version of her software is 1.78.401.2
when i check for software updates i just get a message that no new software is aviable.
i also looked at the htc page there i cant find any firmware for the one s. just the htc sync manager.
That is quite old version. And yes the version I mentioned was OTA update. I got it couple weeks ago.
I think there is two explanations why it isn't available to your wife's phone, at least yet. Either its carrier locked or sim locked or whatever it is called in english. Or its the model with the older S3 processor.
How to tell which processor it has? There propably is better programs to look at it, but for example you can find that out with an app called OS Monitor. Now when you open it, go to misc tab and look at the "Scaling Range". If its 384000-1512000 then its the newer S4 model which should have the update available.
Now if the top clock speed is around 1700000 then its the older S3 version.
just checked, its the s4 version.
phone also has no lock of any kind no carrier and no sim lock. its totally free.
it just has a 1&1 (german internet provider) branding. but according to the seller it just has a different start screen and a couple of 1&1 specific apps (that can be uninstalled).
Ok, then I have no idea why it isnt working.
There is this, but I think its too much of an hassle for a update and requires you to root the phone.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1781033
I think you should take it to a service and tell them about the wifi issue. Maybe they can manually update it to the latest version to fix the wifi.

[Q] WiFi errors on the One S?

Ok, this is a strange one.
My wife got an Telus HTC One S (running stock ROM, I think it's ICS 4.0.3, might be 4.0.4) yesterday, and we've been having no end of troubles stemming from the WiFi.
First, we tried to install Swype over WiFi, and the download bar kept getting stuck at around 10%. Switching to the 3G network allowed us to install it. We figured it might be a Swype issue.
Then we started grabbing some apps from the App store over WiFi, and everything kept throwing the error "Package File is Invalid". We tried over 3G, and it worked fine.
Remembering some troubleshooting I had to do with my Galaxy S and its wonky WiFi, I set up the HTC to use a static IP. This worked, but only temporarily. After a few apps were downloaded, it started throwing the same "Invalid" error.
The general advice around the web seems to be clearing the Play store cache/data, and uninstalling its updates. We have tried that multiple times, with no luck. Besides which, the store works over 3G, just not WiFi, so I doubt it's the store itself.
We have two other Android devices in the house, running Gingerbread 2.3.3 and Honeycomb 3.2. Both of them can download fine over the same WiFi connection.
Because of this, I'm pretty sure it isn't the Play Store (since it works on 3G), nor the WiFi itself (since it works with other phones). My best guess is either the HTC One S's WiFi hardware is faulty, or it has a software/firmware bug.
Any ideas?
EDIT: At some point during this process, we also made sure to update to the latest firmware (1.84, I believe), just to rule that out. The firmware also kept saying it was corrupted if I downloaded it over WiFi. I had to download it over 3G to install the update.

Heh, that's the plan. I've been searching around trying to figure out if this was maybe a known problem for this phone, though, or a software issue that people knew how to fix. Doesn't look like it.
Thanks, though.
it could be a bad wifi chip or a fault in the antenna. probably just a hardware issue. defective electronics, the bane of the modern era

So we exchanged the phone, and have the same error on the new one. We took the second phone back and tried it on the store's WiFi, and it works there. So it looks like it's an issue with our WiFi network. But that's insane, because we already have two Android devices on the same network, and those work fine.
Are there any known incompatibilities with ICS and WiFi networks? I'm pulling my hair out here.

Same problem here, galaxy s2,after playing around with some custom roms,i went back to stock generic ics and now I have this ptoblem,i realised that on mobile data works perfect, my wifi is from virgin media, but 7 months while it was not rooted it did not have this problem at all. I have to mention that it doesn't happen to all apps from the matket.also once I got "nit enough memory" error which is hilarious. I don't know what is,but I will try to download the apps while I am out connected on other wifi ntw
if it's occured on multiple phones, i reinstate my opinion that you should attempt to root and flash a custom rom
For example I can't install blood brothers (not that I need it,just because I get points on money factory),but can install angry burds and a b rio which are bigget than the tirst one

Yeah, I don't really want to do that to my wife's phone when it's this new.
Luckily we found a workaround, by daisy-chaining our old router into the current one, and connecting the WiFi through the second one. Not ideal, but it works.

[Q] Wifi Problems

Hi,
Starting to lose my patience with this device now. Such as shame that this lovely piece of hardware is strangled by poor software. I've already put the device on ebay and withdrawn it because its so slinky and I really want the issue to be sorted. I have no option but to go with the ipad mini at this rate, it just works!
Using odin I've successfully upgraded to ICS with P6800DXLP8_P6800OLBLP7_P6800DXLP7_HOME.tar and XXLQ1_OXALQ1_ATO My wifi keeps dropping out, ive tried it on three different routers etc and still the same issue. Tried CM10 and that reboots on me. Ideally i want a stock rom that works without any niggles on my Euro p6800. Any ideas, i'm really trying to make Android work for me, ive searched the forums like a good boy but no real answers anywhere.
:cyclops:
I can't help but thinking... if you are fed up with the Sammy device, why not switch to something that is completely open, like the Nexus 7, instead of a closed ecosystem like Apple's? Seems like there are other (better) choices out there than the iPad mini.
I'm sorry you're having troubles. Please feel free to give me your tablet. I could always use two!
Barring that, here is what I would suggest that has worked for me:
I have always had "advanced WiFi lock" from the play store, and it appears to have improved WiFi performance even when I had ICS.
I had locerra's cyanogen 10 ROM for a spell and really liked it. I then did some research in the development section and found Daniel HK's Paranoid Android ROM v. 2.55 and have enjoyed it even more. WiFi performance has been consistent and stable on both custom. roms.
Do some research and have a go at it.
If not, i can give you my address as I am currently living in Mexico and you can ship it to me!
I didn't experience any wifi issues at all until today. I'm staying with a friend for the week in Canada, and wifi k3ps dropping out. It seems that only a restart will solve the issue, and the network then falls out of range(even though I'm next door to the router). I'll give the app mentioned a try.... But any other thoughts please let us know! I'm on the leaked ics rom from Open Austria, rooted.
Update: "Advanced wifi lock" app has solved the issue, thanks! But we shouldn't really need to download the app.. Any ideas of how to solve such issues natively?

Correction, sadly the app didn't solve the issue.... Still having intermittent wife but HTC is connected constantly.

Ensure you don't have BOTH 2.4 GHz & 5 GHz enabled on your router at the same time.
Use one or the other.
After disabling 2.4 GHz band, and using 5 GHz only on my Billion router, my device (P6810) had no wifi drop-out issue. Same if I use only 2.4 Ghz band only.
Hope it helps.......
BTW, I would suggest LP8, such as my SkyHigh ROM, having "fixed" wifi issue for most........ But try the above first

Thanks, The firmware on my mate's Cisco router was out of date, wifi connection much better but it still cuts out and appears to only reconnect if I restart. Even a "quick reboot" from within Rom Toolbox Pro doesn't reconnect. Annoying issue... It even cuts out midway through a skype call with my wife (but no issues on mates ipad or my htc) Also no issue with my wifi connection back in the uk. Very weird. Any further ideas appreciated!

Just wondering of the connection is secured? Does it cut out on open connection?
If secured, did you restore wifi settings with any particular app (ie. Titanium)? If so, you could try delete/forget wifi connection and manually enter the password instead
Or, delete/forget wifi connection in settings and restore with titanium backup. You usually have choice of "101" or "XML", try one then the other, reboot each time after restore.
Edit: if you have another device to set up a wifi hotspot, open and secured, and test?

It's a secure network, but i've tried forgetting the ssid and then reconnecting, but it makes no difference... Still patchy connection. I don't want to make the network open as it's my mate's network not mine.
I downloaded an app called "wifi manager" and it seems to be working 60% of the time, which is good enough for the moment. When I get back home to my own wifi network I expect no connection problems as it was working fine when I left last week probably the issues were due to my mates awful Cisco router and not the GTab!

I think it's the WiFi driver in the version of your ROM.
There is no reason you should be having to amend settings on a router because in most instances, you will not have access to a,ending the router.
I'm currently living in Mexico and I'm dependent on several WiFi access points around town and intermittent WiFi where I live. I can safely assume that the technology isn't the latest and greatest down here and I don't control any of those settings.
I am not experiencing the problems you are describing.
I think you're right, it is the wifi driver. I've just tried connecting to the open wifi network at Toronto airport, which connects fine on my htc, but i need to restart my GTab in order to connect to it. I'm running an official Samsung ics rom from the European carrier, Open Austria, (downloaded from samobile.com)... These issues only started when I left the UK and arrived in Canada. I'm wondering if the 3g roaming has some part to play in the error. Anyway.. I will try again when I get home, but anticipating issues.... How would I fix this? Do I have to reinstall the rom and all my apps?! (hope not, as I have this baby set up just perfect )

Maybe I overlooked it, but what is your current firmware?
Sent from my GT-P6810 using xda premium
Current firmware is the official ics from Samsung, build number Imm76d.xxlq2
Now I'm back home and wifi connects perfectly. I do suspect an issue of using wifi when roaming, but will keep an eye on it next time I go abroad again and post back if it happens again.

Ah, that says it all...
Check my comments about LP8 firmware mentioned in my first post here..... way down the bottom Was obviously missed. Posts after that, I assumed you had, since you didn't comment about it.
There is also a thread relating to the problem and the subsequentLP8 fix.
Either flash SkyHigh ROM (P6800 DXLP8) or official DXLP8.
Whether just flashing the kernel from DXLP8 firmware world do the trick, not sure, as I have a P6810. But as I said, flashing the firmware package helped most out with the "wifi bug"
Do you have root and custom recovery?

Now have installed latest LP8 Rom form sammobile
Wifi issues have gone away....For a week...Now back again.
Just dropping out every few minuets and not in range etc...
my ROM is
Baseband version P6800DXLP7
Kernel version 3.0.15-1160935

Build number IMM76D,DXLP8
Is there anything wrong with this ROM or could anybody recommend a fix or alternate ROM?
Thanks and Regards..
Possible solution to WIFI problems?
I have had major problems with WIFI in my 7.7. The Austrian ICS has dropped connections, went totally berserk in some locations and stopped working unless rebooted.
I have now diagnosed (I believe) that the reason is the use of channel 12 in any WIFI router. If the router does not use 12 there seems to be no problems. At home I can configure my router not to use 12 and after that I have had no problems. There seems to be some kind of conflict or the Tab is faulty in that sense.
I do not know if this can be generalized, but at least for me it worked.
Yes I had the same problem with band number.... My friend's router that my tablet had an intermittent connection with, was on band 11. As soon as I got back home to my router in the uk (which uses band 6) My wifi connection problems disappeared.

Yes I Can say after doing alot of reading i realised its the chanel.
im using locked chanel 5 and seems much better..also wifi connection manager from play store.
still not the greatest and low signal even in same room to router but working i suppose.
Just funny how my S3 has a much stronger signal compared to the 6800 every wifi ive ever used.
Would be good if somehow the wifi drivers from S3 could be used somehow?
